People came to Soul Revival because of relationships. But relationships weren't enough to keep them. Something deeper had to happen.Joel, Stu and Tim continue working through the emerging themes from Stu's PhD, and this week it's theme two: Christian identity formation through conversion and biblical discipleship. The research keeps showing that people came through the relational front door, felt a real sense of belonging, and then encountered something they weren't expecting. The gospel was preached, clearly and consistently, every single week. And that's what changed people. The conversation covers belonging before believing, cheap grace versus costly discipleship, the difference between a consumer and a participant, why the commitments group was the key to the culture, and what it looks like when your social life and your Christian life aren't two different things. Also: Tim's Value Pack Sunday Christian memory, soggy spaghetti bolognese and the hip hop night that happened the night before the Cronulla riots.Timestamps00:00 Warm beanies, Square One godgles and a man who caught a shark06:30 Theme two: Christian identity formation through conversion and biblical discipleship08:30 How people came in and what they found: relational front door, explicit Christianity12:00 The production line vs the shared life: Paul in 1 Thessalonians15:00 The commitments group and the culture it created18:30 The hip hop night before the Cronulla riots23:00 Tim's reflections from the interviews: authentic whole-of-life faith27:00 Two kinds of belonging: sociological and spiritual33:00 Come and see: Philip, Nathaniel and the Samaritan woman36:30 Service culture: spaghetti bolognese, Romans 12 and costly discipleship46:00 The difference between a community and an event48:00 Preview of theme three: ecclesiology of friendship and intergenerational familyDiscussed on this episode:Dietrich Bonhoeffer — The Cost of DiscipleshipValue PacSubscribe, leave a review, and send your thoughts to joel@shockabsorber.com.au

This sermon addresses the modern difficulty of simply trusting and following established paths of faith. Through an exploration of the early church and the life of Abraham, we discover that true maturity often requires setting aside our need to uniquely innovate and instead committing to faithful imitation of proven models.Scripture ReferencesHebrews 5:11-14Hebrews 6:9-20Romans 4:20Genesis 11:31Acts 7:2-4Key PointsThe Calling of the Church: The church is called to imitate the examples of maturity and faithfulness that came before it, not to constantly reinvent the wheel. The Struggle to Follow: The author of Hebrews expresses frustration with the early church because they have become "spiritually dull and indifferent." They are still relying on basic teachings when they should be mature enough to teach others. The "But We Need Our Spin On It" Mindset: A major obstacle to maturity is the modern tendency to accept a proven truth or model but insist on customizing it or adding a personal "spin." This often weakens the effectiveness of the original truth. The Example of Abraham: Abraham is considered the father of faith, not because he was perfect, but because his faith grew stronger over time. Romans 4:20 says, "Abraham never wavered in believing God's promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God."The Delay in Haran: The story of Abraham's journey to Canaan reveals a crucial point about obedience. He received the call to go to Canaan, but stopped in Haran and stayed there until his father died. His father, Terah, became a form of baggage that delayed his obedience. God often waits for us to leave our baggage behind before moving us forward.ConclusionTrue spiritual maturity involves a willingness to follow without needing to be the innovator. It requires leaving behind the "baggage" of our own preferences and cultural conditioning. MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

God has entrusted believers with something priceless: the faith once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3). In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef challenges Christians to embrace their responsibility as custodians of Gospel Truth—passing it to the next generation unmodified, unwatered-down, and unchanged. But here's the danger: many believers rarely open their Bibles, and “we cannot contend for something we don't know.” When Scripture is neglected, deception becomes inevitable, and false teachers flourish—often appearing kind and spiritually polished while quietly draining the Gospel of its saving power. As Paul warned, they may have “a form of godliness but denying its power” (2 Timothy 3:5). Dr. Youssef reminds us that contending isn't about quarrelsome pride—it's about love for God and love for the lost. The true Gospel transforms people from the inside out, and that's exactly why it is worth defending. This devotional will strengthen you to know, love, and live the faith—so you can recognize error, speak truth with grace, and hold fast to the whole counsel of God. Prayer: Lord, thank You for the transforming, saving power of Your Gospel. May I be bold to stand against false teaching out of love for You, Your Truth, and the lost in need of redemption. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. “For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you” (Jude 1:4). Learn more in Dr. Michael A. Send us Fan MailIn this first episode of our four-part series on living embodied, we explore what it means to stop disconnecting from our bodies and start living with honesty before God. We share how many of us learned to survive hard seasons by numbing out, pretending we're okay, and pushing through pain until disconnection became normal. From our perspective, embodiment is not about self-obsession or chasing trends. It's about integrity, stewardship, and being truthful about what's happening inside us. We ground the conversation in Scripture, looking at God breathing life into humanity in Genesis 2:7, the call to honor God with our bodies, and the reality of Jesus coming in the flesh. We also reflect on Elijah's collapse in 1 Kings 19 and how God responded first with rest and nourishment before correction or instruction. That moment reshaped the way we think about burnout, healing, and the connection between body and spirit. We end by focusing on the resurrection of Jesus, reminding ourselves that He still carried a physical body, invited people to touch His wounds, and even ate with His disciples. That truth challenges the temptation to escape our limits or disconnect from ourselves. We leave listeners with one gentle question to begin practicing awareness without shame: “What is happening in my body right now?” because awareness is often the first step toward healing and change.Support the showLearn more about our Revelation Within Community: https://www.revelationwithin.org

In this message, Pastor Karl digs into the third and fourth parables of Matthew 13 — the Mustard Seed and the Leaven — and recovers an interpretation that the earliest church held for the first three centuries: these are not simply triumphant stories of kingdom growth, but diagnostic warnings about corruption quietly taking root within it.Using the memorable image of an unnaturally oversized Chihuahua, Pastor Karl challenges the assumption that bigger always means better — in culture, in church, and in personal faith. Just because something grows doesn't mean it's healthy. God designs everything with a DNA, and when growth outpaces its intended nature, something has gone wrong. From the Mustard Seed, the lesson is clear: a church that softens or reshapes Scripture to fit cultural comfort is one where corruption has found a home. Health — not size — is the measure that matters. From the Leaven, the warning cuts even deeper: what is hidden eventually spreads, and what spreads eventually shapes. Compromise never announces itself. It blends in, seeps slowly, and before long, convictions weaken, hunger for God fades, and obedience stalls.Pastor Karl closes with a pointed and personal call: audit your inputs, don't outgrow your obedience, and do serious business with the leaven you've allowed to stay too long.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

Every generation is entrusted with a sacred responsibility: to pray for, train, and model faith in Jesus Christ for those coming behind. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef turns to a sobering warning in Judges 2:10–11. Joshua's generation saw God's power firsthand and remained faithful—but after them arose a generation that “knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel,” and spiritual drift turned into open rebellion. What happened? Dr. Youssef explains the danger of slow, subtle compromise—small concessions that seemed harmless at first, but eventually became the normal air the next generation breathed. When parents and leaders stopped telling the stories of God's deliverance and stopped modeling wholehearted devotion, their children became easy targets for the enemy's snares. Yet this message also carries hope. Just as God repeatedly rescued His people in Judges when they cried out to Him, He still meets repentant hearts today. Even in a culture that has largely turned its back on God, we can still pass the baton of victory—by returning to uncompromising faith and discipling the next generation with urgency. Prayer: Lord, show me how to lead my children well, that I might pass on a legacy of faith to the next generation. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4). Learn more in Dr. Michael A. In Matthew 10, Pastor Karl highlights a pivotal transition in Jesus' ministry, where the disciples move from merely observing and admiring Him to being sent out as active participants in His mission. Jesus calls the Twelve, empowers them with authority to heal, cast out demons, and proclaim the kingdom of heaven, and then commissions them to go first to the lost sheep of Israel. This chapter marks a hinge point in the Gospel: following Jesus is not just about learning His teachings or attending gatherings—it demands responsibility, urgency, and full participation in sharing the good news.Jesus is strikingly honest about the cost. He instructs the disciples to travel light, relying completely on God's provision rather than personal security or contingency plans, emphasizing that dependence on Him is central to discipleship. He warns of inevitable resistance: they will face opposition from culture, religious leaders, and even family members, as allegiance to Him can divide households and bring persecution. Yet, Jesus promises divine help—the Spirit will speak through them in moments of trial—and calls for wise, innocent endurance, urging believers to flee persecution when possible not for self-preservation, but to reach more people with the gospel.Ultimately, Pastor Karl challenges the church: a faith that costs nothing accomplishes nothing. The true disciple pledges exclusive allegiance to Jesus, accepting the responsibility to live as radical image-bearers of Christ in the world, no matter the personal price. This message confronts comfort-seeking Christianity and invites every listener to decide if Jesus is worth the cost of true following.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

What if people aren’t walking away from Jesus… What if they’re walking away from a version of Him that was never deep enough to carry them through a storm? In this episode of The Uncommon Christian, Jon Ellis tackles a sobering question: What did casual Christianity produce? When decisions outpace discipleship… When attendance outpaces obedience… When growth outpaces depth… Faith may look strong, until pressure hits. Through John 6, Matthew 13, cultural realities, revival at Southeastern University, and the taproot analogy, this episode exposes why shallow faith collapses under weight, and how rooted faith endures. This is not an attack on the church. It’s a call to build deeper. If you’ve ever wondered: ● Why so many believers deconstruct under pressure ● Why leadership burnout feels epidemic ● Why emotional faith doesn’t survive suffering ● How to build endurance instead of excitement This episode is for you. Because shallow faith won’t survive what’s coming. But rooted faith will. What if people aren’t walking away from Jesus, but from a version of Him that can’t carry them through a storm? In UNC025, Jon Ellis exposes what happens when churches grow wide but not deep. Through John 6, Matthew 13, and real cultural pressure, this episode reveals why shallow faith collapses, and how rooted faith endures. Moments don’t create endurance. Depth does.

How Casual Christianity Became Normal - When Decision Replaced Discipleship

How did Christianity become this casual? How did a faith that once required surrender turn into something that rarely disrupts us? In this episode, Jon Ellis traces the subtle shift that took place in modern American Christianity; a shift from discipleship to decisions, from formation to momentary response, from surrender to convenience. This isn’t an attack on evangelism. It’s not criticism of church growth. It’s a call back to biblical discipleship. Jesus never hid the cost. He clarified it. When the cost of following Him isn’t explained clearly, faith feels confusing. Shallow roots develop. Comfort becomes assumed. And casual Christianity slowly becomes normal. In this episode, Jon explores: • How altar-call culture unintentionally shifted the focus from discipleship to decision • Why unexplained cost creates fragile faith • How cultural Christianity replaces covenant obedience • What Jesus actually meant when He said, “Count the cost” • And how to return to true, Spirit-led discipleship If your faith has felt heavier lately, this may not mean something is wrong. It may mean you’re finally encountering the part of discipleship that trains you. Depth is still available. Uncommon faith is still possible. And surrender is still the way forward. How did Christianity become this casual? In this episode of The Uncommon Christian Podcast, Jon Ellis explores the subtle shift from discipleship to decisions, and why so many believers were taught how to start faith but not how to sustain it. Jesus never lowered the standard. If your faith feels heavier than expected, this episode will help you understand why, and how to return to true, Spirit-led discipleship.

Jesus never called people to attend services; He called them to follow Him, be transformed by Him, and learn how to live in His Kingdom. This teaching unpacks what true discipleship looks like according to Scripture: a life of intimacy with Jesus, obedience to His Word, and daily surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit. We talk about the difference between making converts and making disciples, and why the Church cannot walk in lasting revival without a return to the way Jesus actually formed people. If you're hungry for more than surface-level Christianity and you want to walk in real spiritual growth, this message will challenge you, encourage you, and call you deeper into the life Jesus intended.

What does it truly mean to make disciples? In this powerful four-part conclusion to the Commands of Christ series, we explore the Great Commission as the crescendo of all that Jesus commanded. Rooted in Matthew 28:18–20, this series calls us to move from inward transformation to outward multiplication. As we have spent four years treasuring, meditating on, and living out Christ's commands, we now step into the command to teach others to observe all things He has taught us.Have we allowed the commands of Christ to shape our lives so deeply that we are compelled to pass them on to others? What legacy of discipleship are we leaving behind for the next generation? As we conclude this four-year journey through the commands of Christ, we are invited into the very heartbeat of discipleship: to go, to teach, and to pass on what we've received. The Great Commission is not the end—it's a beginning. Jesus calls us to treasure His commands, not only in our study and meditation, but in our obedience and our sharing (Matthew 28:18–20). We've discovered that these 51 commands are not mere rules but revelations of Christ's character, windows into His heart, and pathways into deeper relationship with Him. From abiding in Him to receiving His power, from denying self to awaiting His return, each command has formed a beautiful mosaic of what it means to follow Jesus. Now, with full hearts, we pass the baton—encouraging every listener to continue in the Word, to keep treasuring His commands, and to go make disciples. Let us walk forward with boldness, knowing that Christ goes with us, and let us live in such a way that others see Him clearly through our lives. This is not just a podcast series—it is the ongoing call of Christ. May we hear it and follow Him faithfully.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? What does it truly mean to make disciples? In this powerful four-part conclusion to the Commands of Christ series, we explore the Great Commission as the crescendo of all that Jesus commanded. Rooted in Matthew 28:18–20, this series calls us to move from inward transformation to outward multiplication. As we have spent four years treasuring, meditating on, and living out Christ's commands, we now step into the command to teach others to observe all things He has taught us.Have we embraced Christ's call not only to follow Him, but to help others do the same? Are we treasuring His commands in such a way that our lives overflow with the desire and ability to make disciples? As we reflect on the journey through the commands of Christ, we now arrive at the climactic call to make disciples—a commission that encapsulates all we've learned and lived out. Rooted in Matthew 28:18–20, this command is not just about going, but about going with the authority of Christ, filled with His Spirit, and teaching others to observe—to treasure and guard—everything He has commanded. Discipleship is the natural fruit of our own walk with Jesus; we cannot lead others where we ourselves have not gone. As disciplined followers who abide in His Word, we are called to multiply that life in others, knowing we do not go alone—He is with us always. In a world often content with conversion, Christ calls us to spiritual maturity—to shape lives that are rooted, trained, and transformed. His commands, covering every area of life, are His heart expressed, and to teach them is to lead others into deeper fellowship with Him. Let us walk worthy of this calling, empowered by His presence, faithful in His Word, and committed to the mission: making disciples of all nations.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? As we have spent four years treasuring, meditating on, and living out Christ's commands, we now step into the command to teach others to observe all things He has taught us.Are we actively living out the Great Commission in our own lives? What does it truly look like to treasure Christ's commands and help others do the same?As we reflect on these four years of immersing ourselves in the commands of Christ, we now arrive at the crescendo: making disciples. This command, rooted in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20), is not merely a call to evangelize, but a lifelong invitation to teach others to observe—to guard, treasure, and live out—all that Christ has commanded. Discipleship is not about producing spiritual converts alone, but nurturing disciplined followers of Jesus, shaped by His Word and empowered by His presence. We are reminded that the authority to go comes not from ourselves, but from the risen Christ who sends and stays with us. True discipleship begins in the quiet places of worship, overflows from a heart that treasures His Word, and is sustained by the power of His Spirit. As we go, we do not go alone—we go with the King, bearing His heart to the nations. May we live in obedience to His call, becoming disciples who make disciples, for His glory and by His grace.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? As we have spent four years treasuring, meditating on, and living out Christ's commands, we now step into the command to teach others to observe all things He has taught us.What does it truly mean to make disciples, and how are we living out the commands of Christ in a way that impacts others? Are we treasuring His Word so deeply that it overflows into discipling others? As we come to the final command in this rich four-year journey through the words of Christ, we are brought to the heart of it all—making disciples. The Great Commission is not just a call to proclaim salvation, but an invitation to walk with others as they grow in their relationship with Jesus. We are reminded that discipleship is more than teaching facts; it is guiding others to observe—to treasure, guard, and live out—the commands of Christ (Matthew 28:18–20). We do this not in our own strength but under His authority and in the power of His presence, promised to be with us always. True discipleship begins in the quiet place of worship, flows from hearts that are first surrendered, and continues as we share with others what we ourselves have received. Like disciplined athletes pressing toward a heavenly prize (1 Cor. 9:25), we are called to pursue Christ, to be shaped by His Word, and to multiply that life in others. Making disciples isn't a burden but a joy, an overflow of love for Jesus and for His people. Let us go with confidence—not in ourselves, but in the One who calls and empowers, who is always with us, even to the end of the age. Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? In this compelling sermon, Pastor Karl concludes Matthew Chapter 4, tracing Jesus' move to Capernaum in Galilee of the Gentiles—fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy that light dawns in the region of the shadow of death—and the launch of His ministry with the urgent call: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” He unpacks John the Baptist's arrest and martyrdom as the forerunner who must decrease so Jesus can increase, then contrasts the radical response of the first disciples—Peter, Andrew, James, and John—who immediately abandon nets, boats, and family to follow Jesus and become fishers of men—with the great crowds drawn only by miracles to meet their needs. Pastor Karl challenges every listener: Are you part of the crowd seeking Jesus to fix your problems, or a true disciple whose primary identity has changed, leaving everything behind to seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness? He explains that biblical righteousness exceeds the Pharisees not in degree but in kind—imputed by faith in Christ, yet proven through a lifestyle of Scripture study, prayer, evangelism, tithing, and obedience. Join us for a powerful message that calls every believer to move from consumer to committed follower, embrace repentance as ongoing surrender, and live righteously as proof of genuine faith. Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Susie Walther is the founder of The Well Training Ministry. As a young woman, she served in the military and committed her life to Christ through the influence of her Army roommate. Joined by insights from an Israeli psychologist and a revealing clip from MSNBC, we dissect the ideological shift that is reshaping how we handle familial and generational bonds. Our conversation anchors on viewing these challenges through a biblical perspective, recognizing our shared human frailty, and the transformative power of grace and forgiveness. Our complex world often prioritizes self-interest, leading to divisiveness that creeps into even the most faith-based communities. We share our personal stories and the joy discovered in serving others, acknowledging the cultural polarization that complicates political and religious identities. We discuss the powerful cultural influences that can push us away from living out true kingdom values, as well as practical ways that churches and individual believers can embrace a more holistic, biblical vision for life in the reign of God.
