This week, Flick is joined by film buffs Maudie Osborne and Anthony Carew to review the latest from Jeff Nichols, who is also known for Take Shelter (2011) and Mud (2012).The Bike Riders details the decade-long story of the Midwestern bike club, the Vandals. As an outsider, Kathy observes their transformation from a haven for misfits into a notorious crime gang. This evolving identity calls the club's ideals into question, and young member Benny must choose between the allure of the Vandals and being with Kathy. The Bike Riders (2024) The team also goes on to review Yorgos Lanthimos' new, witty triptych tale, Kinds of Kindness. Teaming up again with Emma Stone after the recent release Poor Things (2023), and Efthymis Filippou, the screenwriter for his 2009 film Dogtooth, Lanthimos returns with more of his signature flavour of weird.“This is a work of audacious originality, vicious humour and balls to the wall strangeness, giving the impression there are few places the director won't go.” - David Rooney. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is artsy, cold, clinical, and touched on a disturbing theme that many will find difficult to deal with. This is subject matter that we have discussed on a few other movies we have reviewed as being deeply disturbing. 0:30 - Intro5:39 - Trailer7:26 - Synopsis/Review14:45 - Score17:15 - Spoilers/Discussion51:54 - They're Clips1:03:20 - Special Thanks and Outro The Killing of a Sacred Deer Trailer https://youtu.be/CQFdGfwChtw I dare you to watch this trailer and not want to watch the movie after. Currently, you can find this on Amazon Prime for free with a Prime subscription. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is, as far as I can tell, a modern-day retelling or rendition of the Greek tragedy of Agamemnon and Iphigenia, where Agamemnon accidentally kills a sacred deer and ends up offending the gods because of it. The goddess Artemis demands that he pay for the killing with blood from his own family as payment in what is called blood for blood. Check Out Our Review of Midsommar! https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2019/07/10/midsommar-review/ The interesting thing about this movie is that it takes a Greek tragedy, which I think we can all agree, seems distant and hard to relate to at best, and makes it relevant to today’s audience in a very real way. What’s even more interesting is that while they are making this hard to relate to Greek tragedy more relevant and easier to relate to, they simultaneously make the whole movie very cold and clinical. So it’s a bit of a mixture, making it more relatable and also harder to comprehend. Because it isn’t a literal retelling of the story of Agamemnon, it becomes a unique story of its own. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is, at its core, a psychological thriller. The acting is delivered in a way that makes you feel mildly alarmed because it’s so deadpan and void of real human expression. There is a bleakness that pervades the whole script, even the sets, camera angles, and framing are set up to invoke minimalism and clinical feelings. Alicia Silverstone is still sexy as hell There are plenty of topics that The Killing of a Sacred Deer touches on that are meant to make the viewer at the very least intrigued, and usually, a little bit disturbed. Lot’s of strange sexual undertones pervade this movie but never make it to the surface. The overall effect is an oily residue that coats your brain with the thought of, “that was awful and strange… I want to know more.” The actors did a great job of doing what they were told to do by the director – act detached. The Killing of a Sacred Deer centers around Dr. Steven Murphey (Colin Farrell) who is a surgeon, and his wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) who is a clinic owner, and their two children, Kim (Raffey Cassidy) and Bob (Sunny Suljic). A key role is that of Martin (Barry Keoghan), a teenage boy whose father died in the hands of Steven on the operating table. Young Martin has taken an interest in Dr. Murphey’s profession, and Dr. Murphey obliges Martin by allowing him to do a kind of job shadow thing when it’s convenient. Like These Cold and Clinical Movies? Check Out The House That Jack Built Review! https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2018/12/05/the-house-that-jack-built-review/ Interestingly, Martin’s mother is played by Alicia Silverstone, who has made a fabulous transition from being my teenage heartthrob to being my middle-aged heartthrob. Bravo, Alicia! Although it’s a small part, her character is effective and deeply sexual. This scene is like most of the aesthetic, cold and clinical The Killing of a Sacred Deer was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who did The Lobster, which was also an A24 distribution, and starred Colin Farrell. Lanthimos and a Greek man named Efthymis Filippou wrote The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

In part 1 of this 2-part episode, Chas & Stu look at examples of good character motivation.  We’ve all watched movies where we don’t believe the motivation of a character or characters. We may have even written scripts where readers don’t buy the character’s choices. And that’s often a real problem because most of these choices coincide with key structural moments — e.g. the moments where the characters decide to do something “out of character” in order to progress to the next part of the story.  To help us solve the problem of how to improve our character motivations, in this episode we explore great examples of character motivation and how they have helped the audience believe a character’s decision.  And so Chas and Stu dive into NOTTING HILL, TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE, GAME NIGHT, ARRIVAL, IN THE BEDROOM, BEIRUT, BREAKING BAD, THE MATRIX, BLOCKERS, A NEW HOPE (of course) and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Passing/honourable mention also to MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, THE COMMUTER, THE LOBSTER, GAME OF THRONES, IRON MAN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and DOCTOR STRANGE (as we re-visit and re-contextualise stuff we’ve analysed previously).  The potential craft tools they uncover are character patterning, structural timing of the decision, debating the decision (both internally and externally), withholding the decision from the audience, and using external plot elements to either remove obstacles or push the character into making a decision that is... well... out of character. But believably so. Stay tuned for Part II where we - for once - actually do explore ome bad examples of character motivation. As always: SPOILERS ABOUND! Greek weirdo Yorgos Lanthimos, whose off-kilter thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer divided and provoked us a year ago, brings us The Favourite, a wild dramatisation of the power games surrounding Queen Anne's bedchamber in the early 18th century. It's his first feature on which neither he nor his usual partner Efthymis Filippou is credited as a writer, and that might account for its liveliness compared to his previous work, which tends to offer significant downtime in which the audience can ponder what it's seeing. The Favourite moves rapidly and fluidly, the shifting dynamics between Olivia Colman's Queen Anne, Rachel Weisz's Lady Marlborough, and Emma Stone's Abigail Hill constantly exciting, with their plans always subject to change depending on who knows what about others. And on top of the intrigue, it's really, really funny. The Favourite offers us a brilliantly cast and even more brilliantly performing female trio, picking on a rare historical moment in which all the most important and influential people were women. (The men are all secondary, made physical jokes of, with their extravagant costumes and makeup outdoing the women's.) Sex is always on the table and made to mean different things to different people: to Marlborough and Abigail it's a tool to be used to manipulate and control the Queen, to whom it offers intimacy and emotional satisfaction she deeply craves and is allowed to feel she doesn't deserve. The film doesn't offer titillation, nor does it wish to shock or surprise with its depictions of sex or even the concept of the lesbian relationships. It's actually quite remarkable how the film so casually avoids making it superficial and gratuitous. We take our time to appreciate the cinematography, extraordinary wide-angle and occasionally fisheye shots that render characters, particularly the Queen, tiny playthings in a ludicrously ostentatious doll's house. Mike remarks upon the way status is conferred by placing characters above and below each other and shooting at extreme angles to emphasise; José picks up on the costuming and its relationship to gender, mentioning in particular his admiration for Nicholas Hoult's self-effacing, generous performance as Robert Harley, impressed by his willingness to make himself a feminised figure of fun. There's so much more we loved and we're effusive throughout the podcast. And again. It's a really, really, really, really, very very funny film indeed. Recorded on 3rd January 2019.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The directing and writing team of Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou have been a pretty well known arthouse combo for the last eight years. With films like Dogtooth and The Lobster, they have put together some very quirky and unique films. The Lobster was generally a “hit” for fans of genre films. Recently, their latest movie, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, was released by A24, the distribution company, who have begun to pick up some very well received arthouse horror films such as It Comes At Night. Starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, The Killing for a Sacred Deer has received great reviews and had a strong run in limited release. Surgeon Steven Murphy has an odd mentor relationship with teenager Martin. They meet for lunch, gives him gifts, and shows kindness to this otherwise awkward boy. Yet the friendship may be based on guilt since Dr. Murphy was operating on Martin’s father when the man passed away. Soon Martin is invited to dinner at the Murphy family. When Steven’s wife Anna begins to become curious at this unique bond between an ex-patient’s son and her husband, both her own children suddenly become ill. Steven soon learns that there may nefarious causes to the illness behind Anna and his children. As a result, Steven may have to make the hardest decision of his life. The film has a solid 79% rating on Rottentomatoes. No matter, its odd dialogue reading and unexplained mystery has given general audiences mixed reviews. Yet the acting and cinematography have been praised all around. Dark Discussions takes a look at this somewhat contentious film and gives their critique.
