We've arrived at the end of our year long study of the films of Lars von Trier and we wish we could say that we hate seeing him go but it's been a very, predictably, rough year. Today we discuss his last feature film that stars a pretty ageless Matt Dillon who is a serial killer. He recounts his life of horror to the poet Virgil in 5 distinct incidents that he shares. It's “THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT” from 2018. A character study late in the career of the notorious director. The film also stars Uma Thurman, Bruno Ganz, Riley Keough and some other character actors we've seen all year long in von Trier films. What works about this study in psychopathy and what doesn't? We also revisit our scores of Lars's films over the past year and there have been some adjustments since our discussions. Join us as we say goodbye to Lars von Trier films (at least for a bit) and at the end of the episode we reveal who the director of 2025 will be that we will spend the entire year discussing their catalog. Next year's director might even be more controversial than Lars! Hear us tell of it. This week, we discuss two films from acclaimed director Terrence Malick. The first is To the Wonder (2012), an experimental romantic drama starring Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem. Filmed in Oklahoma and Paris, the film chronicles a couple who, after falling in love in Paris, struggle to keep their relationship from falling apart after moving to the United States. The second is A Hidden Life (2019), an epic historical drama starring August Diehl, Valerie Pachner and Matthias Schoenaerts, with Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz in their final performances. The film depicts the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today's episode takes a deep dive into power and tyranny as we explore the top 5 most notorious dictators in film—both real and fictional. We'll then transition to a gripping discussion on Beasts of No Nation, followed by a lighter segment exploring Tales of Africa, offering a rich tapestry of African folklore.Top 5 Dictators in Film:Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" (2006) - Forest Whitaker gives a chilling portrayal of Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator. His performance captures the charisma and volatility that characterized Amin's rule, earning Whitaker an Academy Award.Coriolanus Snow in "The Hunger Games" series - Donald Sutherland plays the cold and calculating President of Panem, a fictional dictator whose manipulative governance involves pitting district against district in deadly games.Adolf Hitler in "Downfall" (2004) - Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler's final days in his Berlin bunker offers a humanizing yet horrifying glimpse into the psyche of one of history's most infamous dictators.Palpatine in the "Star Wars" series - Emperor Palpatine, a fictional dictator whose quest for control of the galaxy embodies the classic traits of tyranny and corruption, showing how power can absolutely corrupt.T'Challa in "Black Panther" (2018) - While not a dictator in the traditional sense, T'Challa's role as the king of Wakanda brings up interesting discussions on autocratic rule and benevolent dictatorship in a fictional, technologically advanced African nation.Beasts of No Nation is a harrowing look at child soldiers under the command of a warlord in an unnamed African country. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and based on the novel by Uzodinma Iweala, the film stars Idris Elba as the charismatic and brutal Commandant. This film does not shy away from the grim realities of war and its impact on children, making it a profound piece for discussing the consequences of unchecked power and the loss of innocence.Shifting gears to a more family-friendly topic, Tales of Africa is a delightful exploration of African myths and folklore. This segment introduces kids and their parents to a world of moral tales, animal fables, and legendary heroes, offering insights into the rich cultural heritage of Africa. It's an excellent way to educate children about the diversity of narratives and the importance of storytelling in different cultures.Whether you're intrigued by the portrayal of dictators on screen, looking to understand the complex issues presented in Beasts of No Nation, or eager to journey through African folklore, today's episode has something for every dad. So tune in as we explore the realms of power, tyranny, and tradition in another thought-provoking session of Bad Dads Film Review.

Stephan Zacharias is a composer, based in Hamburg. In a conversation earlier this year with Variety's Ed Meza, he shared some stories from his career – how he became a composer for film and television, working with the late and legendary German film producer Bernd Eichinger on both ‘Vera Bruhne' (2001), for television and ‘Downfall' (2004) directed by Oliver Hirshbiegel. The film of the week is Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979.) From wiki: “Nosferatu the Vampyre (German: Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht, lit. 'Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night') is a 1979 horror film written and directed by Werner Herzog. It is set primarily in 19th-century Wismar, Germany and Transylvania, and was conceived as a stylistic remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 German Dracula adaptation Nosferatu. The picture stars Klaus Kinski as Count Dracula, Isabelle Adjani as Lucy Harker, Bruno Ganz as Jonathan Harker, and French artist-writer Roland Topor as Renfield. There are two different versions of the film, one in which the actors speak English, and one in which they speak German.[3] “ But also, they discuss the John Waters show at the Academy Museum and all things John Waters. Josh discusses his Piggly Wiggly bucket list films, Blood Beach (1982) and Gator Bait (1973) and all about horror movie marketing. TMR Movie Roundtable we welcome back our good friends Frank Johnson, Antony Rotunno and Mark Campbell for a discussion on the superb 2004 German-language war drama, Downfall ("Der Untergang") starring Bruno Ganz and directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4656375/advertisement

For the 13th TMR Movie Roundtable we welcome back our good friends Frank Johnson, Antony Rotunno and Mark Campbell for a discussion on the superb 2004 German-language war drama, Downfall ("Der Untergang") starring Bruno Ganz and directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. Based in part upon the memoirs of Hitler's last personal secretary, Gertraud "Traudl" Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara), Downfall tells the story of the final ten days of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime. As the Red Army closes in on Berlin in late April 1945, Hitler (Bruno Ganz) and those closest to him retreat to the Führerbunker, an elaborate air raid shelter next to the Reich Chancellery. Sitting in his Map Room, Hitler fantasises about a Third Reich victory and continues to make futile plans for his depleted forces. He berates his generals for cowardice and betrayal and ignores all advice that he should leave Berlin, preferring instead to die if the war is lost. As the realisation dawns that defeat is imminent, Hitler—still refusing to see fault in himself, but ony in those around him—swiftly marries his long-term partner Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler), and the two prepare a suicide pact. After the deadly deed is done (or is it?*), Joseph Goebbels (Ulrich Matthes) assumes the role of leader for one brief day, as he and his wife Magda (Corinna Harfouch) extend the insane ideology so far as to take the lives of their own six children in order to "save" them from a life without Hitler and the Third Reich, after which they too commit suicide. Swiftly thereafter comes unconditional surrender, as Traudl and others disappear into the Soviet lines and escape into the countryside. Join us as we disuss the production, consider if there are any lessons to learn for today, * and talk briefly (without reaching any firm conclusions) about the possibility that Hitler and Eva escaped from the Bunker and fled to Argentina. Somehow I didn't imagine the children of the night making such New Age music Director Werner Herzog revives the uniquely German take on the Dracula myth with his 1979 remake of Nosferatu The Vampyre. Klaus Kinski emerges from the shadow of Max Schreck's silent era performance to put his own morose spin on the Transylvanian Count who longs to spend eternity with Isabelle Adjani. Can Van Helsing stop a plague of rats from spreading madness throughout Central Europe? Or will romantic audiences actually root for the bloodsucker to beat out aloof husband Bruno Ganz for the heart of the girl? Listen and find out!

One minute you're playing expert spoiler to would-be forgers at an art auction, the next minute you're saving one such forger before he falls to his death off a speeding bullet train. As disgraced British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would say, "...them's the breaks!" This week's episode, perhaps the most special in our history, has us palling alongside a delightful pack of miscreants with 1977's The American Friend! But before we get around to our latest entry in our series of crime films, this week's Blue Plate Special finds us contrasting the listless Airport 1975 with the eclectic brilliance of The Red Shoes, Menace II Society, and Moulin Rouge! before celebrating the lives of James Caan and Tony Sirico. Upon checking off all our boxes and stocking up on all the essentials, we finally hit the open road with none other than director of The American Friend himself, Wim Wenders- who joined us live and in person at the Huffman Brothers Productions Studios! Listen as the German New Wave icon dishes on the arduous production process with madman Dennis Hopper, his tempestuous collaboration with Patricia Highsmith, where his relationship with Francis Ford Coppola currently stands, and what he remembers about Caldwell County's own Willard Blevins from the early 1980s. We were incredibly honored to have Mr. Wenders on the pod and I think our conversation with him lived up to the hype! Feel free to skip to 2:33:35 for our conversation with Wim Wenders and 3:06:05 for the beginning of our audio commentary.
