Romance novels have become one of Canada's fastest-growing publishing genres, with print sales soaring, ebook readership growing, and dedicated romance bookstores opening across the country, raising questions about what's fueling the boom. Amy Lea, author of romantic comedies including "The Bodyguard Affair," joins Jeyan to discuss how shifting reader tastes have created new opportunities for Canadian voices in romance and why she now feels more confident setting stories closer to home. Then, Kaitlynd Carmichael of Indigo Canada and Kearston Bergeron, co-owner of Toronto's Hopeless Romantic Books, explore the factors behind romance's rapid rise and what its growing popularity reveals about today's readers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MachoTube is a viewer-friendly place for people who want to explore gay films with a cinema-first mindset. MachoTube focuses on stories, characters, emotion, and representation rather than treating gay movies as adult content. For viewers who care about meaningful LGBTQ+ narratives, the platform creates a simple path to discover titles, check the mood, and enjoy films in a smoother way. From the second step onward, viewers can use https://machotube.one/ as a practical entry point when they want free gay movies, LGBTQ films online, and queer cinema that feels respectful. MachoTube is useful for people who want to browse by feeling, genre, runtime, or viewing comfort instead of scrolling endlessly through unrelated results. The value of machotube.one comes from how it presents gay stories as films with themes, pacing, dialogue, and emotional context. MachoTube can work well for audiences looking for romance, drama, documentaries, short films, or international queer cinema where subtitles and clear playback matter. This makes the experience easier for casual viewers and more comfortable for people who want thoughtful representation.Overall, MachoTube is best understood as a gay movie discovery and streaming space built around accessibility, respect, and simple navigation. It is not about adult framing; it is about helping viewers find LGBTQ+ stories that match their mood, time, and interest while keeping the focus on film quality, storytelling, and inclusive representation.
In this episode, I share my thoughts on teen romance TV shows and movies, and how the relationships they portray often lean more toward chaos than connection. Looking at these stories through an adult lens, it's hard to ignore how much drama, insecurity, and emotional imbalance are presented as normal or even romantic. This conversation explores how these portrayals can shape expectations for young women, and why it's important to question what we've been taught to see as love. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Want that chapter checklist just Click Here! In this episode of Pop Culture Weekly, Kyle sits down with Fandango correspondent Nikki Novak for a deep dive into one of the most enduring genres in film: romance. But you know we're not just doing the the predictable, airport-chase, “we met three days ago and now we're soulmates” kind. We're talking about the full spectrum from sweeping gothic love stories, modern anti-romances, nostalgic '80s classics, prestige Oscar contenders, twisted psychological relationships, and even horror with a love-story core. This is your guide to the best romance movies, anti-romance films, and complicated love stories worth watching around Valentine's Day or anytime of year.Big-Screen Romance & Theatrical ExperiencesWhy Wuthering Heights (Margot Robbie & Jacob Elordi) feels like a modern gothic epicThe unexpected romantic tension inside crime thrillers like Crime 101Revisiting John Hughes–era classics like Pretty in Pink and why they still resonate decades laterModern Romance That Hits DifferentThe emotional power of Past Lives and why it became an instant classicWhy Blue Valentine remains one of the most honest depictions of love falling apartThe Notebook vs. La La Land: traditional romance or bittersweet realism?Lost in Translation and the beauty of fleeting connectionWhy Bridgerton continues to dominate pop culture with evolving love storiesAnti-Valentine's & Complicated LoveThe Break-Up and why it feels uncomfortably realThe dark, obsessive romance of Phantom ThreadHorror with heart: when love and tragedy collide in unexpected waysPlus:A behind-the-scenes Bill Murray Golden Globes storyWhat makes certain romance films timelessWhy audiences crave both fantasy and realism in love storiesAnd Kyle's ongoing (and very funny) skepticism of rom-com clichésWhether you're a hopeless romantic, a cynic, a horror fan, or just someone who appreciates great storytelling - this episode explores how love has been portrayed on screen across decades and why these films continue to matter. Because the best romance stories aren't just about Valentine's Day.They're about connection, obsession, heartbreak, timing… and the moments that stay with us long after the credits roll.

Valerie and I take a scalpel to some well loved movies this season. First there was the Nightmare Before Christmas and now Sleepless in Seattle. I'm not a believer in ‘magic love' so I find the premise of the movie silly, but there are some good examples of tension. However, under the microscope of Valerie's 4 Story Questions, this movie is lacking in some fundamental storytelling scaffolding. Without clear wants there isn't anything meaningful at stake. The take away - the story could be better. There, I said it. I am the Scrooge of Valentine's Day. -M"Tension is the anticipation that something is going to happen." - Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesThe Accidental Tourist (Season 5, Episode 503)Crazy Stupid Love (Season 13, Episode 1304)Season 5 - Shapes of Stories + ResonanceSeason 7 - Character Dimension + Worldbuilding For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Over the last couple of decades, holiday movies have increasingly centered around love and romance, and they’re growing massively in popularity. In this episode, we’re going to dive into the rise of romance-themed holiday media and how this intersects with cuffing season, or the increased tendency for people to partner-up during the winter months. I am joined once again by Dr. Paul Eastwick and Dr. Eli Finkel. Dr. Eastwick is a Professor at the University of California, Davis, where he studies romantic attraction and close relationships. Dr. Finkel is a professor at Northwestern University and author of the bestselling book The All-Or-Nothing Marriage: How the Best Marriages Work, which we discussed back in Episode 45. Together, they co-host the Love Factually podcast. Some of the specific questions we answer in this episode include: Why is so much holiday media focused on themes of love and romance? What’s the science behind “cuffing season?” Is it a good or bad thing that holiday media focuses so much on romance? Is Die Hard really a Christmas movie? On the Family Movie Night Podcast we want to help your family have better conversations around the content you consume. Guests: Katie Daubs is a feature writer at the Star. Kris Rushowy is a Queen's Park reporter for the Star. Holiday romance movies are everywhere. They started as a staple of the Hallmark brand, but now have spread to others like Lifetime, Netflix and more. Many of these new holiday films are filmed right here in Ontario, so beyond spreading the spirit of the season, they also provide a beneficial economic impact to this region. This episode was produced by Brian Bradley, Paulo Marques and Raju Mudhar. The holiday movie script generator was created by Katie Daubs and Cameron Tulk.
You know EXACTLY the kind of movie we're talking about today - you know exactly when you're going to cry and what kind of cry it's going to be...and that winds up being totally okay with you. It's the kind of cry that, once it's over, actually makes you feel kind of good because the emotions are heartwarming tales of true love, personal triumph, or a wealth of other things. Like...the music swell coming up during EVITA when Madonna beings singing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" on the Casa Rosada. Or...Forest Gump and Jenny in Washington DC. Or...fill in the blank. That's what Annie and I are talking about today. Annie brought some amazing context to this show as well so I'm really proud of the conversation. And you know that an episode like this is going to have a flip side - so be on the lookout for the episode featuring Tearjerkers We Will Never, EVER, Watch Again. Do you have a Top Five list you'd like us to consider? Or maybe you thought this week's episode was shit? That's okay - we still want to hear about it!
