For better or worse, Bertrand Bonello's The Beast is one of the most memorable movies of 2024. A discombobulating sci-fi trip through time that stars Lea Seydoux and George Mackay, it explodes the kernel of loneliness at the center of Henry James' 1903 novella - The Beast in the Jungle - into something much more...perplexing.

Zero Says MISSION FAILURE and Wiz Says MISSION ACCOMPLISHED for No Time To Die Though the guys are split on recommending No Time To Die, they share very similar observations on the final film of the Daniel Craig era. As an ending to a series of films that started with Casino Royale, it just feels incredibly disappointing with how the series ended. Craig's Bond was a breath of fresh air for the nearly 60 year franchise...and yet, the arc ends with not only retrofitting Craig into the formula, but in a largely unsatisfying conclusion. And speaking of the conclusion, both Wiz and Zero were puzzled as to why Bond had to die at the end of the film. It didn't feel right that Bond had his full emotional evolution throughout the five films...only for him to bite the dust at the end of the film. On top of that, both the love interest (a returning Dr. Swann played by Lea Seydoux) and the villain (Rami Malek) are also flawed in critical ways. Dr. Swann feels like a wholly different character than what she was in Spectre and Safin just feels too goofy to be taken seriously as this brilliant villain. But man, does the action save this movie. Nearly every action scene is done well and are entertaining and exciting. This goes double for the scene set in Cuba which has some great scenes involving Ana de Armas and Lashana Lynch. And while Wiz feels like the action is just enough to recommend, Zero can't get past the disappointing elements of the film.
That train keeps chugging and by pure accidental bliss, we have another film up here with some stark similarities! Would I go on to say this film is "controversial"? Probably. We have some issues with it. As you'll gather, we don't talk about the film much but rather the way the film was made. There's some questionable behavior happening here, and we're not a podcast to let that slide. The two leads however, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos are exceptional. Honestly, they knock this film out of the park with the rather mediocre material they are given. It's a disappointing shame as this was adapted from the equally exceptional graphic novel by Jul Maroh. This is mostly Ryan's opinion here, Laura thinks the film is pretty good despite our universal disapproval of the off-camera shenanigans. It's just the Director who needs to take a little look in the mirror honestly if any of these allegations are true. Let's hope not dude, because that's kinda messed up!

Mark also gives his take on the show, as well as reviewing ‘Sting', which sees a 12-year-old's pet spider rapidly transform into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival. This week's big review is ‘The Beast', a science fiction romantic drama loosely based on Henry James' novella ‘The Beast in the Jungle', which imagines a near future in which artificial intelligence is in control of everyone's lives and human emotions are perceived as a threat. To coincide with the release of his latest film The Beast (starring Léa Seydoux and George Mackay), writer/director Bertrand Bonello came on the podcast to talk about AI and technology, acting, connection, memory, music and perplexing cinema. It was an honour for Neil to talk filmmaking and cinema - taking in Eyes Wide Shut, David Lynch and Sunrise - for the podcast, as Neil and Dario are big admirers of Bonello's work and it's a privilege to have one of the world's most interesting contemporary filmmakers on the show. Highlights from the Episode: Perplexing Cinema: Bonello discusses his preference for films that engage viewers in active thought, asking questions rather than providing answers. Casting Insights: Learn about the challenges and triumphs of casting George McKay and the enigmatic Lea Seydoux, whose performances bring profound depth to the film. AI and Memory: The film's exploration of AI delves into the subjective nature of human memory and emotion, highlighting the inherent limitations of technology in capturing the human experience. Music as Narrative: Bonello's meticulous selection of music is more than an illustration—it's a narrative tool that enhances character and story. Cinematic Time: Discover how Bonello plays with time in his films, creating a fluid and immersive experience for the audience. The Beast is released by Vertigo Releasing on Friday May 31st in UK cinemas and marks the filmmaker's boldest and most cinematically adventurous film to date. It's one of the films of 2024 and The Cinematologists is proud to have welcomed Bertrand on the show to promote the film's release. Another seven movies on the docket for Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy and a lot of variations on horror. Not so much with the third film from director Goran Stolevski that Steve suggests a look at (Housekeeping for Beginners). But Larry Fessenden crafts a werewolf metaphor for America (Blackout), there is a new giant spider film (Sting), Nicolas Cage's sons, at least, fighting hairy snapping creatures (Arcadian) for a few minutes plus Lea Seydoux on the lookout from unimaginable dread for over a century (The Beast) and a new Woody Allen film (Coup de Chance). Ryan and Dylan are joined once again by Dune superfans Carlos Irazabal and Sebastian Marcano-Perez to talk about Dune 2.
The guys give both a spoiler-free and an in-depth spoiler review of Dune Part Two starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, and Stellan Skarsgard.
The Dune books by Frank Herbert are widely said to be impossible to make into movies or shows. However, a few have tried and the latest is director Denis Villeneuve with, first, his Dune Part One film in 2021 and now Dune Part Two. Overwhelmingly, the consensus is that Villeneuve succeeded beautifully with his first Dune film in introducing movie audiences to the world of Dune. Now we get his Part Two which continues the story of Paul Atreides, who is royalty, but also could be the most powerful being in the entire universe someday. What will he do with this power? Will he engage in good to help out the people of the universe or will his power end up killing billions of people? Dune is also about Paul's alliance with the people of the planet Arrakis, known as the Fremen. We also see his battle against his enemies, the Harkonnens and the Emperor. Is Dune Part Two entertaining as it tells this complex, twisted tale? Check out this show to find out. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends the wait is over and in an exciting change of pace, no negativity. We're going to slaver and spaz all about 2024's Dune Part 2 directed by Denis Villanueve and starring Timotheé Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgaard, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, Christopher Walken and (spoiler alert!) Anya Taylor-Joy. My guests today are David Johnson DMD and Roseanne Caputi. Series regular and good friend Alex Robertson is sitting this one out because he said, and I quote, “I have to polish my silver and scrub the cabinets tonight.” But the truth is Dune is sci-fi and is packed wall-to-wall with current superstars with nary an obscure 70's grindhouse actor to be found in its nearly 3 hour running time. Before we contemplate the many riddles of the film, the synopsis: Dune Part 2 picks up exactly where part one left off: After narrowly escaping multiple assassination attempts and exiled in the harsh desert of the savagely hot and dry spice producing planet Arrakis after Paul Atraide's father Duke Leto was murdered by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in an brutal attack against House Atraides conceived and orchestrated by the Emperor Shaddam IV, Paul and his mother Lady Jessica have joined with the desert warrior Freman people. Paul wrestles with the notion or is it a plot? That he is the Kwisatz Haderach, the chosen one prophesized to lead the Freman warriors in a holy war against all of the Houses of the Galactic Empire. Fearing that their plot has backfired, the Bene Gesserit order of witches led by Gaius Helen Mohiam devise a plan to install the sadistic Feyd Rotha Harkonen as governor of Arrakis in order to quell the Freman rebellion brewing which Paul leads and Lady Jessica, now a full full-fledged Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, promotes to the more religiously extreme Southern Freman tribes.

The gang busts up the Jukebox Jamboree this week, as they review John Waters' first major Studio feature, Cry-Baby (1990). Starring Johny Depp as the title character, Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, the golden boy of the roughneck group of juvenile delinquent greasers known as the Drapes, a departure from the teen wholesome heart-throb characters he was known for playing prior to 1990. Anyone who knows John Waters' reputation may find Cry-Baby a surprisingly easy watch, due its distinct lack of filth and debauchery. Did that decision make it a winner, or a punishment for Pete, Tyler, and Joseph? Listen in to find out! The gang begs for water this week, as they review one of the final movies from director Gore Verbinski, Rango. With an all star case, this animated movie from Paramount and Nickelodeon Studios, Rango tells the story of a pet chameleon lost from his owners, and stranded in a deserted town of Dirt. A thespian at heart, Rango (a stage name) assimilates to the classic western characters found in this small town, and quickly becomes the hero they need, and finds the purpose in his own life. Watch on Paramount+ to discover this forgotten gem for yourself, and find out what all the fuss is about. http://www.MCFCpodcast.comhttp://www.facebook.com/MCFCpodcasthttp://www.twitter.com/podcastMCFChttp://www.tiktok.com/middleclassfilmclasshttp://www.instagram.com/middleclassfilmclass Email: MCFCpodcast@gmail.comLeave us a voicemail at (209) 730-6010Merch store - https://middle-class-film-class.creator-spring.com/ Join the Patreon:www.patreon.con/middleclassfilmclass Patrons:JavierListener Stephen: The Maple Syrup DonJoel ShinnemanLinda McCalisterHeather Sachs https://twitter.com/DorkOfAllDorksRyan CorbinJason forcefivepodcast.comBrendan BealChris GeigerDylanMitch Burns linktr.ee/MitchburnsRobert Stewart SWOProductions.comJason linktr.ee/scenethatreviewsAndrew Martin https://andrewwatchesmovies.libsyn.com/DallasJoseph Navarro Pete Abeyta and Tyler Noe

The gang sells their daughter off to LAZAR WOLF this week, as they review an all-time classic musical about life at the turn of the century in remote Russia, Fiddler on The Roof (1971). Based on the smash hit Broadway musical of the same name, the Norman Jewison directed film tells the story of Tevye, the Jewish milk man, and father of 5 daughters. Tevye must wrestle with tradition and the happiness of his family, while dealing with the sad reality of the spreading anti-Semitic sentiment of the local Authoritarian government. Even if you haven't seen this movie, you undoubtedly know some of the catchy songs: If I were a Rich Man, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Tradition, L'chaim (to life), Sunrise Sunset, Do You Love Me... I can go on. Watch it if you haven't, don't let the runtime scare you... then listen along. http://www.MCFCpodcast.comhttp://www.facebook.com/MCFCpodcasthttp://www.twitter.com/podcastMCFChttp://www.tiktok.com/middleclassfilmclasshttp://www.instagram.com/middleclassfilmclass Email: MCFCpodcast@gmail.comLeave us a voicemail at (209) 730-6010Merch store - https://middle-class-film-class.creator-spring.com/ Join the Patreon:www.patreon.con/middleclassfilmclass Patrons:JavierListener Stephen: The Maple Syrup DonJoel ShinnemanLinda McCalisterHeather Sachs https://twitter.com/DorkOfAllDorksRyan CorbinJason forcefivepodcast.comBrendan BealChris GeigerDylanMitch Burns linktr.ee/MitchburnsRobert Stewart SWOProductions.comJason linktr.ee/scenethatreviewsAndrew Martin https://andrewwatchesmovies.libsyn.com/Joseph Navarro Pete Abeyta and Tyler Noe

Follow along with Clarice Starling as she helps find the elusive and murderous killer, Buffalo Bill, with a little help from the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter. There's a musical from Jacques Revette, a film from Patrice Leconte and a new 4K edition of one of Terry Gilliam's best. Peter also certainly wants you to know about a film with Lea Seydoux that flew under the radar at the end of last year and that he is certainly a champion for one of the biggest hits of 1983. 0:00 - Intro 1:00 - Criterion (The Fisher King (4K)) 6:59 - Arrow Films (Heart of Dragon) 9:25 - Cohen Media (Up, Down, Fragile) 12:11 - Kino (Hell Is For Heroes, Man on the Train, Mississippi Gambler, Moment to Moment, They Came to Cordura) 26:19 - Shout!
