Esther Fleece Allen's childhood wasn't easy. Having dealt with an abusive father and being abandoned by her mother before age 13, Esther went through more hardship as a child than many of us may hope to face in our lives. Her trials didn't stop there though. When the now-adult Esther's father showed up at her home after years of absence and began stalking her, it became clear that her trauma would not be confined to just childhood. Esther sits down with Davey to share some of her story and what she's learned about what it means to be “saved” by God. Check Out Esther's Website Buy Esther's Book: Your New Name
This week on Real Talk with Rachael we’re talking with Esther Fleece Allen about her book, “Your New Name: Saying Goodbye to the Labels That Limit”. CNN has called Esther one of “Five Women to Watch in Religion,” USA Today has named her one of the “New Faces of Evangelicalism” and Christianity Today has called her “one of the 50 women shaping the church and culture.” She is a graduate of the Oxford Center of Christian Apologetics and is currently in seminary. Her favorite new names are “wife” and “mama” as she is thankful to have a new home with them. What We're Talking About: There’s a difference between the labels you give yourself and the name God gives you. We often get labeled by someone close to us. “Our names are written in the book of life, not our labels.” There’s a difference between sins, inequities, and transgressions. God wants to speak to us through his word. A name change will look different for every person. “I am a daughter of God and that is enough.” God wants you to resign as an employee and be a son or daughter instead. We don’t have to earn our worth with God. We are more than conquerors! Identity. Labels. Names. Who are you? God knows. No, not like, "Oh, only God knows," but like, He knows you. Knows us. Knows our true identity. Esther Fleece Allen, author of the new book, Your New Name: Saying Goodbye to Labels that Limit, is determined to help us know it, too. Her story is gripping, and her love for Jesus and people is palpable. Join us? Highlights: “If I don’t know who I am and who God names me, I will inevitably be redefined and renamed by the culture.” --Esther Fleece Allen “I was thirteen ... I probably should have gone into the foster care system. I didn’t know how to ask for help. I didn’t know what lament was. These families just recognized that I had a need. They recognized something was off, and they pursued me in that. God showed himself to me in that. One family bought me a car. One family paid for my gas money. One family paid for my prom dress so I could go to prom. On family paid for me to apply for colleges. This is what the Body of Christ looks like.” --Esther Fleece Allen “[Our labels] can be like a self-fulfilling prophecy: ‘I was orphaned, so I’ll never be loved. My own parents didn’t want me, so I’m not lovable.’ We start putting these walls around our heart, and we start decorating the walls. Suddenly, our lack becomes our identity instead of asking God for something new.” --Esther Fleece Allen Question of the Week for Next Week: What snack do you love that you get super judged for liking? My guest for The Happy Hour # 283 is Esther Fleece Allen. Esther loves to connect people to practical, faith-centered tools for living through every season, good and bad. She’s the author of two books (Your New Name and No More Faking Fine), a graduate of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and is currently in seminary. When she's not traveling to speak or teach, she enjoys making a home with her husband and children. On the show today, Esther and I talk about releasing labels we attach to ourselves that aren’t rooted in our God-given identity. Esther explains how these false labels from our circumstances, the past, shame, or even labels others have given us can make us miss the truth of our identity. Esther shares her own experience fighting to stay in the faith and live in the name God has given her as she endured abuse, broken family relationships, and years of stalking from her father. I loved Esther’s message to embrace all seasons of life, including times of lament as well as celebration, and through all of it, we can take it to the Lord. Labels describe, empower, but also limit our lives. And every person alive wakes-up each day either empowered by their true identity or limited by what they actually believe is possible in life. And that was the case for today’s guest, Esther Fleece Allen. For much of Esther Fleece Allen’s life, she believed the names other people gave her: orphan, no good, and unlovable. But in today’s conversation, through the lens of my friend Esther’s story, you’re going to learn how God has specifically ascribed a unique name to you; a name that demolishes lies and insecurity; one that contains great purpose and potential to serve the world around you. It’s time break limiting beliefs and limiting labels in favor of your true identity, which will yield a fruitful, fulfilling life. Life is full of labels that lie to us and try to limit us. Don’t you think it’s time to stop being identified by the circumstances you’ve come from or the names others have called you? Your God-given identity is the truest thing about you. No matter your past, God has a new name for you. It’s deeply personal and it’s beautiful, better than any name you could choose for yourself. What is it? Esther Fleece Allen hid a deep, dark, painful past and lived out so much trauma. God was the only constant in her life…so she hung on to Him and lives out her new name. Esther is an author, speaker, millennial leader, and Founder & CEO of L&L Consulting, Inc., where she helps Christian ministries develop innovative strategies for sustainability, development, outreach, and marketing. She also is a graduate of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics Business Program, has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from Oakland University, and is currently in Seminary studying Women’s Leadership. In her own words, she says these four things about herself: “I’m probably more serious than I should be. I really do study the Bible in my free time. I really do love it.” “I have laugh attacks. I just can’t stop.” “I love shopping. I feel the Lord when I shop.” “I love mountain climbing. I love hiking. I’ve climbed several 14ers.” Today, Esther and I talk about her story and how God meets in us in lament, and the freedom we can have living out the name God gives us. I think you’ll be smiling through tears just like me, as you hear stories from her beautiful life. I’m so grateful for my conversation with Esther, and I know you’ll find encouragement and freedom from her message. Christine talks with author and Bible teacher Esther Fleece Allen about fighting an allegiance to stoicism, performance, and success. Esther shares about her broken family life and how that broken family life left her with labels like “orphan” and “abandoned” and “abused.” For many years, she tried to outrun her emotions, just trying to put the past behind her and move on. Instead, she pursued success and actually achieved it. But eventually Esther learned that outrunning our emotions is actually outrunning God and that in fact, God wanted her real emotions: the sadness, the pain, and the grief. In our conversation, Esther shares how lament is a pathway to intimacy with God and why performance and success, even with good things, can sometimes just be pretending.LINKS FROM THE SHOWEsther’s book, No More Faking Fine // Esther's new book, Your New Name // Sara Hagerty’s book, Every Bitter Thing is Sweet // Logos software EPISODE SPONSORS Find out more about the new book, Teach Me to Feel, by Courtney Reissig.Find out more about the book, For All Who Wander, by Robin Dance. Though Esther Fleece is in one of the happiest seasons of her life, having just exchanged wedding vows only a couple of months ago, this wasn't always the case. Abandoned by both of her parents by the time she was a teenager, Esther is no stranger to deep and profound loss. With heart-breaking honesty, Esther opens up about a pivotal moment in her childhood when she was positioned in a court room to divide her parents. This set her on a course to hide her pain, pretend she was okay, and "suck it up." And she did... for many years. After traveling the world with a well known organization, speaking to large crowds, and climbing the ladder in her career, Esther's world came crashing down when she could no longer run from the painful past that haunted her. It was then that she went on a journey that led her to the language of lament. In the interview we not only talk about her personal story, but also discuss what lament is, why we need it, and how it heals us. We also dive into what mental illness does to a family, why the church must be careful about what it says about pain and loss, and how we can use scripture to guide us toward wholeness. This interview invites us into the language of lament and how we can learn to speak it in our own lives. Join us!

She believed that if she simply shut out the traumatizing memories of her past, that she could live a normal life. However, it would seem that the simple shutting off of feelings would not help Esther lead a successful life at all. As adulthood crept in, Esther realized that this failure to accept the bad from her past would simply not do. She was not living an authentic life, but she did not realize it until she finally began to lament. She discerned that she could no longer pretend as if everything was fine when it really wasn’t. With the help of God and a real support system, Esther allowed herself to grieve and lament her past. Only then was she able to truly keep moving forward in a positive and successful way with her life. Speaking to Esther was a privilege to say the least. She has wonderful advice to give and will help you through any season, if only you let her words enter your heart. I want to thank her so much for taking the time to speak with me and I hope that you all enjoy my interview with the ever-inspiring, Esther Fleece.
