On the latest episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester continue their analysis of Season Two of the Disney+ streaming series Andor: A Star Wars Story with a discussion centered on the Ghorman storyline heavily featured across Episodes 4 to 8 and culminating in the eighth episode focused entirely on the the tragedy of the Ghorman Massacre. One major theme of this storyline is the power of propaganda, introduced in the first Imperial scenes of the season's first episode. We then consider other forms of Imperial manipulation of the events on Ghorman, and the ideas Andor presents about oppression and resistance through the lens of Imperial military occupation, the Ghorman Front and public opposition, and the role of Luthen's agents on the road to the Massacre. These themes and ideas are reflected across the characterization and character arcs of numerous individuals in these episodes, including Cassian, Luthen, and Wilmon; Vel and Cinta; Dedra, Syril, and Partagaz; and even Mon Mothma and Director Krennic. We also examine how the various new characters from Ghorman – particularly Carro Rylanz, Enza Rylanz, Samm, Thela, and Lezine – illustrate the themes and ideas of the storyline, and how their experiences of oppression and resistance influence their decisions and actions leading up to, and during, the Massacre. In media appearances promoting Andor Season Two, creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy has spoken extensively about the real-world influences on his storytelling in the series, especially his lifelong passion for reading and learning about revolutions across the world and throughout history. Our discussion considers several of these influences, such as wartime propaganda, especially in the twentieth century. Gilroy also references both the French Resistance to Nazi occupation during World War II and the subsequent Algerian resistance to French colonial control in subsequent decades, portrayed in the classic film The Battle of Algiers (1966), which influenced the visual style of the eighth episode in particular. We also point out connections to the American Revolution, French Revolution, and Haitian Revolution, and the significance of Gilroy's mentions of Oliver Cromwell and the Baader-Meinhof Group. Like George Lucas, who drew heavily on fictional and nonfictional influences when first creating his ideas for the initial Star Wars films, Tony Gilroy's Andor contains an insightful and impactful combination of fiction and nonfiction inspirations. Send us a textStep back in time to the American frontier where five extraordinary women defied expectations and carved their names into history. The vast expanses of the American West weren't just shaped by cowboys and outlaws – they were transformed by women of remarkable courage, talent, and determination. Our journey begins with Annie Oakley, whose unparalleled sharpshooting skills captivated audiences worldwide while she maintained a carefully crafted feminine image that made her revolutionary talents acceptable to Victorian sensibilities. We contrast her approach with Calamity Jane, who boldly rejected feminine norms, embracing masculine attire and behavior to create opportunities in a world that offered women few paths to independence. The notorious Belle Starr emerges as the compelling "Bandit Queen" whose practical buckskins, boots, and armed presence challenged conventional womanhood and captured public imagination through sensationalized stories that both celebrated and simplified her complex reality. We then explore Sacajawea's crucial but undercompensated contributions to westward expansion – her indigenous knowledge of plants, languages, and diplomacy proved essential to the Lewis and Clark expedition's survival, revealing how Native expertise enabled American colonization. Finally, Sarah Winnemucca's powerful advocacy illuminates indigenous resistance through her groundbreaking public speaking career and autobiography that challenged harmful stereotypes while navigating the precarious position of cultural mediator. These women weren't merely passive witnesses to history – they were active architects of the American West, challenging our understanding of frontier life through their exceptional skills, defiance of restrictive norms, and tireless advocacy. Their stories reveal how media and mythology both elevated and constrained them, creating legends that sometimes overshadowed the complex realities of their lives. By examining these five remarkable women beyond the archetypes that often define them, we gain profound insights into female agency, resilience, and the multifaceted nature of fame in a transformative era. ANDOR is over, but the conversation about this show's impact and resonance has just begun. Tricia Barr and Sarah Woloski continue our conversation from last month, sharing our thoughts on this incredible show. Our main discussion considers Tony Gilroy's comments from the final ANDOR: Declassified Episode, in which he states “The five women at the end of the show are what the show is about. It's the victory, it's the pain, it's the life that these five women had that gives the show it's dramatic punch at the end.” Who are these women and how are they impactful in the show? A group of bridesmaids find reasons to bond in “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress” produced by St. Sebastian Players. The bonding ritual begins with the common agreement that the dress chosen by the bride is perfectly ridiculous. The bond is further forged by the realization that they don't even really like the bride that much. As each woman reveals something of herself they traverse a range of emotions; infuriated, anxious, remorseful, exasperated, frantic, exhausted, flirtatious, but overall hilarious. Highly Recommended.
Can you name five women artists? That's the question posed by Erin L. McCutcheon, as part of a course she teaches as assistant professor of arts of the Americas at University of Rhode Island. In her work as an art historian, researcher and teacher, she aims to raise the profile of women artists. And she was recently appointed to the Committee on Women in the Arts for the College Arts Association.
I scheduled a meeting with my boss one cold mid-March morning in New York City. Since saving up almost $40,000, I had started to taste freedom in my morning coffee. My courage came out of nowhere. I was about to do something crazy. I was on the edge, flirting with the real world. That morning, I did the dead. I quit my full-time job.Three years have passed since that fateful morning, and this week, I hosted a party to celebrate that. As I sipped white wine with my friends, I realized that despite what the crunch of capitalism would want you to believe, I'm still here. I've survived for three years without a full-time job; I also moved to Mexico City and published a teen romance novel in the process. And in some ways, I'm thriving. This article is for anyone in the corporate world who is curious about what I've learned in the chaos of building my new career as a writer, freelancing, and fun, which I'm calling my “post-employment” era. Here, I've distilled for you the five most important professional lessons that I've never shared anywhere else, as well as the most impactful things in other categories of my life.Top Five Lessons for Post-Employment Professional Thriving

When one doesn't respond to a stipulation of inheritance that would go to a person and a donkey... To understand this case, a somewhat parallel case is introduced of five women, two of whom were sisters, who were to be betrothed with a basket of figs - and those two sisters cannot be betrothed in this way, because, as sisters, they cannot be betrothed to the same person. But are the other three betrothed, and if so, why? (Which is then lined up with the donkey in the first case). Plus, the case of one who sent silks to his home, some for his sons, some for his daughters, and maybe daughters-in-law. And the case of one who bequeaths his belongings to his sons (when he had only one, but also a daughter) - is that an error or intentional? Similarly, if one seems to call his grandson "son," is that effective or an error? Also, a new mishnah! With complications of family dynamics and estate-planning.
Becoming an entrepreneur is a leap of faith. Regardless of when or even if your business sees the light of day, starting up is still a tremendously hard thing for someone to take up, work on and say out loud to the world. The leap of faith still exists when you're a woman founder, but with a bunch of other variables you didn't ask for also thrown in.But I'll tell you what doesn't change. It still takes the same amount of passion, the joy of building, stress, frustration and the ability to manage fires that might go off anytime to keep the ship steady, and eventually succeed in the long run.Being a woman founder does present its own challenges and hurdles that are often unexpected or even patronising. Because if you've decided to jump into the world of terrible and exciting, then these are just additional hoops that you have to jump through. That's why role models matter. I must confess we - I - have been disappointed at not being able to get a lot more woman founders and their stories on First Principles. You can be sure we're trying to change that over time. But in today's supercut episode, we bring together five women founders from earlier episodes. This episode features Vineeta Singh of SUGAR Cosmetics, Smita Deorah of LEAD School, Ruchi Kalra of Oxyzo, Radhika Gupta of Edelweiss Asset Management and Soumya Rajan of Waterfield Advisors.Welcome to First Principles—The weekly leadership podcast from The Ken.Let's get started.----------Apply for the Young Business Leadership Programme! What is it?It is an ambitious and exciting role where we take a handful of talented, ambitious and eager-to-learn graduates from India's top colleges and put them through a two-year program where they will work in different roles and functions at The Ken.And throughout the two years they will learn virtually all key aspects of building, innovating and scaling a modern "journalism as a product" organization, well, from first principles. If you want to understand the "why" of why we're doing this, you'll find the details to that here, but if you're just excited about the opportunity from the little I have told you and you're just thinking about "how" do I apply, here's the link for that.----------Also, have you listened to the latest episode of The First Two Years(or TFTY)—The Early Careers podcast from The Ken?In the latest episode of TFTY, host Akshaya Chandrasekaran goes on a quest to explore how to solicit feedback as requested by a listener of the podcast. On February 17, five friends set out on a long bike ride in the Cascade foothills north of Snoqualmie. What started as a routine day on the trail turned into a fight for their lives when a cougar attacked one rider, leaving the other four to fight back with nothing but stones and their bikes. With the recent announcement of the limited edition boygenius signature Broadkaster Jr. by Gretsch—which sold out, by the way—another entry has been added to the relatively short list of women, or, in this case, groups of women with signature guitars. It's a list that has expanded in the past decade or so, and it includes Yvette Young, Chrissie Hynde, Emily Wolf, H.E.R., Susanna Hoffs, Lari Basilio, Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, and Courtney Love. And, of course, what is perhaps the most unique signature model named for a woman–the Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent. Even though the list of women with signature guitars has grown over the years, I think there's still a lot of opportunity for brands to honor some of today's most exciting, up-and-coming guitarists who just happen to be women. Let's talk about some women who I think should get a signature guitar. I based this list mostly on vibes. Okay, getting serious, yes, this list is largely artists of whom I'm a personal fan. But I also thought about musicians who are gaining popularity, brands that don't presently have a lot of signature models, period, guitar models that have been done to death—so I won't be suggesting Strats of Teles—and, finally, I tried to hit a few different genres. But, me being me, most of these artists fall fairly squarely within quote unquote indie rock genre. Support Get Offset by... This week: episode 2 in Not in the Nativity Scene will focus on Five Women of Questionable Reputation, from Matthew 1:1-17. In the ancient near east, when introducing an important figure it was essential that you give their lineage. Matthew does this when he introduces the Messiah, but in so doing breaks two important rules: he includes ancestors with less-than-stellar reputations, and he includes women. All this is very intentional, and foreshadows what Matthew's Gospel is going to tell us about what God and his Messiah are like, and why that matters to you and I.
Men have dominated the world of outdoor adventuring and guiding for so long, that it's easy to overlook the increasing presence of women in all spheres. More women now complete long-distance paddles on the Mississippi, as well as through hikes on the major trails. The world of guided paddling on the Mississippi reflects the trend. In this episode, I talk with five women who worked this past season as river guides on the Mississippi for one of the outfitters or river-focused organizations. I asked each to talk about their paths to guiding, to describe their stretch of the Mississippi, and to spotlight a few places and experiences that highlighted their year. At the end of the conversation, I asked each woman to identifying something about their experience on the Mississippi this year that they're grateful for. You'll hear from:Amber “Sparky” Lynum from Paddle Bridge in the Twin CitiesMelissa Sauter from the Mississippi River Water Trail Association in St. LouisHeather “Red River Otter” Crosse from the Quapaw Canoe Company in Clarksdale, MississippiCory Maria Dack and Sarah Lent In the Mississippi Minute, I mention a few things that I'm grateful for.

In the third movement of Numbers, five sisters approach Moses with a legal case not covered in God's laws: Without any brothers to inherit their father's land, their family inheritance will be lost unless women are allowed to receive an inheritance too. Yahweh agrees with these five women, setting an important precedent for not just how Israel was to engage the laws of the Torah but for later followers of Jesus as well. Join Tim and Jon as they discuss the story of Zelophehad's daughters and Jesus' fulfillment of the law.View full show notes from this episode →Timestamps Part one (00:00-19:55)Part two (19:55-33:05)Part three (33:05-55:24)Part four (55:24-01:12:30)Referenced ResourcesThe Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, Ludwig Koehler and Walter BaumgartnerInterested in more? In mid-July, the Southern Poverty Law Center and several immigrant advocacy groups released a letter detailing sexual assault allegations made by four migrant women formerly detained at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia. All four women accused the same nurse of assault, and since the release of that letter, The Intercept reported on a fifth woman who accused the nurse of assault. CoreCivic, the private prison company that runs Stewart, claims that they investigated three reports of sexual assault against the nurse and found two to be “unsubstantiated” and the other to be “unfounded.” We speak with José Olivares, lead producer for The Intercept and John Washington, contributor to The Intercept and reporter for Arizona Luminaria, about their reporting on this story. Click here to read the full Intercept report on this story. In a 2019 report for The Takeaway, José Olivares uncovered evidence that staff at Stewart “skirted rules when dealing with a migrant with mental illness” who died by suicide at the facility. Click here to listen to that reporting. The Takeaway reached out to CoreCivic for this story and received a statement that reads in part: "The safety, health, and well-being of the individuals entrusted to our care is our top priority. In accordance with Department of Homeland Security and Prison Rape Elimination Act standards, CoreCivic maintains a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of sexual abuse. It is the policy of CoreCivic to provide a safe and secure environment for all detainees that is free from the threat of sexual abuse, assault, or harassment. It is CoreCivic's policy to aggressively investigate all sexual abuse allegations, regardless of the source, and support prosecution for those who are involved in incidents of sexual abuse. Any detainees making such allegations are offered appropriate medical and mental health services, emotional support services, and answers to any questions they have about the investigative process. We unequivocally deny any claims of threats or retaliation." The Takeaway also reached out to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and received this statement: "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of assault, including sexual abuse, and works to protect detainees from sexual abuse by staff as well as other detainees. Detention facilities are required to notify ICE of all sexual abuse or assault allegations, as well as notify local law enforcement of any allegations involving potentially criminal behavior. Every allegation is investigated and referred appropriately for adjudication as required. With respect to the recent allegations at the Stewart Detention Center, two allegations remain under investigation and ICE continues to follow all appropriate protocol to notify, report, and investigative requirements. Any individual – ICE employee or contractor – suspected of sexual abuse or assault is immediately removed from contact with detained individuals until the completion of the investigation."
