Rabbi Yehuda Glick was a little boy leading a regular life in Flatbush – Brooklyn, when, at the age of 8, his parents called his siblings and little Yehuda up to their room for a chat. On his way up the stairs, he had no idea what he was in for, but more than 50 years later, the answer is crystal clear, and Yehuda has been living quite an interesting life in Israel, ever since he and his family arrived here in 1974. Goel sat with Yehuda on Yom Hazikaron, and spoke with him about his story, and a bunch of other important topics, including the danger of comfort.

Over 350 years ago today's Brooklyn neighborhood of Flatbush was an old Dutch village, the dirt path that would one day become Flatbush Avenue, lined with wheat fields and farms.Contrast that with today's Flatbush, a bustling urban destination diverse in both housing styles and commercial retail shops. It's also an anchor of Brooklyn's Caribbean community -- Little Caribbean. There have been many different Flatbushes -- rural, suburban and urban. In today's show we highlight several stories from these phases in this neighborhood's life.If you are a Brooklynite of a certain age, the first thing that might come to mind is maybe the Brooklyn Dodgers who once played baseball in Ebbets Field here. Or maybe you know of a famous person who was born or grew up there -- Barbra Streisand, Norman Mailer or Bernie Sanders. But the story of Flatbush reflects the many transformative changes of New York City itself. And it holds a special place in the identity of Brooklyn -- so much so that it is often considered the heart of Brooklyn.FEATURING STORIES OF Erasmus Hall, the Kings Theater, Lefferts Historic House, the Flatbush African Burial Ground and the Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church.PLUS We chat with Shelley Worrell of I Am CaribBEING about her work preserving and celebrating the neighborhood's Caribbean community. This episode is brought to you by the Historic Districts Council. Funding for this episode is provided by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and Council Member Benjamin Kallos.

Had an amazing time talking with Karen Nicolas, Director of The Haiti Tree Project — a non-profit that works with Haitian farmers and communities to support and expand reforestation efforts through financial and educational support. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We start off by discussing Karen's journey from Catholicism to discovering spirituality in the mountains of Asheville through Ananda Marga and relief work. Karen shares her shift in perspective in experiencing a new culture and the desire to give back and support. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We share cultural perspectives, from my life in the predominant Caribbean neighborhood of Flatbush Brooklyn to her experiences living in Haiti, and the importance of community and looking to the future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Less than 2% of Haiti's native forest remains. We discuss The Haiti Tree Project — it's inception, the initial challenges, the work needed to support Haitian farmers and communities, and using tech to create a greater connection between donors and the trees and farmers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We also discuss impacts of Climate Change, on reforestation, the cause of deforestation, the importance of biodiversity in growing, the demise of industries in Haiti, and I answer a challenging question in what I'd like to offer Haitians to promote growth, freedom, and autonomy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Please check out their work at TheHaitiTreeProject.org. As a non-profit, donations are essential in supporting their mission and the farmers and communities of Haiti.

This week, we are reflecting on the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, along with the shooting murder of Breanna Taylor during a no-knock raid in Louisville; two deaths that shine a horrific, but common light on the reality of police brutality among black Americans as well as other people of color in the United States and the apathy of the American public towards these slayings. We take the episode to discuss our observations from the past few weeks, discussing police militarization through their violent response to protests, the presence of National Guard troops among the police forces, and how fellow anti-war veterans have responded in support to victims of police brutality. Below is a list of resources and organizations that support Black Lives Matter. Please learn all you can and donate to help end police brutality. I want to thank Hip-Hop legend Rampage for calling into my show last night on WSJU Radio at St. John's University. He mentioned many rappers who influenced him including Special Ed and Chubb Rock. Growing up in Flatbush Brooklyn, NY he lived around many of these rappers. Busta Rhymes is his first cousin and they are in the same group known as the Flipmode Squad. He talked about signing his first deal and being on the greatest Hip-Hop remix of all time, which is Craig Mack's Flava In Ya Ear Remix. He discussed his friendships with Craig Mack and The Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls. He has another song with Craig Mack that they recently had recorded before Craig Mack sadly, passed away. We talked about his classic first album Scout's Honor... by Way of Blood and the hit song off of the album Wild for da Night. One of the greatest parts about this interview was that Rampage was freestyling at times! He started the hashtag/term for Hip-Hop today and that is mumble rap. He has kept it real from day one and tells it like it is. He made his music the way he wanted to and I have always loved the grittiness in his music. He has a lot going on: he is going to be in an upcoming movie, he is creating a cartoon, he has his own headphone brand, he has his own sports and Hip-Hop show on NBC, and he is a DJ. Be on the lookout because he has a vault of tracks recorded and he will be dropping a new album soon called When Hell Freezes Over! Thanks again Rampage for calling into my show last night, I had a great time! Follow Rampage on Instagram: @therealrampage and @rampagethelastboyscout and Twitter: @therealrampage.
