People who have an ideological viewpoint tend to let their ideology cloud their vision of being able to see through the data, and view the world objectively. A great example of this is if someone thinks something should work a certain way, and it doesn't, then they believe the results will be far worse than they would be in reality. While having ideological viewpoints are not always a bad thing, it's important to recognize these viewpoints to reduce any subconscious thought process shifts.  Our guest for today is Gene Epstein who is the former Economics and Books Editor of Barron's. He is also an author whose last published book was "Econospinning: How to Read Between the Lines When the Media Manipulate the Numbers." Gene has taught economics at the City University of New York and St. John's University and worked as a senior economist for the New York Stock Exchange.  Today we are going to discuss...   What data our guest is looking at that suggests we are NOT headed for a massive depression Why our guest believes we have achieved herd immunity in several states, which may have a significant positive impact on the economy Why our guest believes the U.S. might be headed for some trouble, but in close to 10 years as opposed to right now Learn more about our guest: Episode 143 The Soho Forum Gene's Article Congressional Budget Review Twitter

Smith and Marx Walk into a Bar: A History of Economics Podcast

This unique episode features Gary Mongiovi of St. John's University and David Levy of George Mason University discussing their particular perspectives on the work of James Buchanan, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Economics, and father of public choice economics and constitutional political economy. The episode begins with an excerpt from Professor Mongiovi's presentation at the first Winter Institute for the History of Economic Thought, held at Arizona State University in January. Mongiovi interprets Buchanan as (what Marx called) a "vulgar economist," who offered disguised ideological arguments as scientific analyses. In a roundtable discussion conducted after Mongiovi's talk, Professor Levy, co-author with Sandra Peart of the forthcoming book about Buchanan and his Virginia School of Political Economy, Towards an Economics of Natural Equals: A Documentary History of the Early Virginia School, argues that understanding Buchanan's economics requires a more nuanced interpretation. A fruitful scholarly discussion between Mongiovi and Levy follows.  For the symposium on Nancy MacLean's Democracy in Chains referenced in Professor Mongiovi's lecture, see: https://www.emerald.com/insight/publication/doi/10.1108/S0743-4154201937B For information on Levy and Peart's forthcoming book, see the book's page at Cambridge University Press: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/towards-an-economics-of-natural-equals/8BFAF197C4ACF4724B70AC398C18A5A0 Smith and Marx Walk into a Bar is supported by a grant from the History of Economics Society: http://historyofeconomics.org

A CWCIT interview with Fr. Joseph Fitzgerald, CM, a Vincentian priest who has served in Panama since 2005, shortly after being ordained. In 2007, he began serving at the Vincentian mission in Soloy, traveling to 50+ villages throughout the mountains, often on foot or horseback, to work with and minister to the Ngäbe people, who are Panama's largest indigenous group and among the poorest. In addition to sacramental ministry and agricultural and artisan projects, a significant part of the Vincentians' ministry has been accompanying them in their struggle to maintain their cultural identity and values, as well as their lands, which have been increasingly threatened by mega-projects such as open-pit mineral mines and dams. Fr. Fitzgerald holds an MA in global development and social justice (St. John's University, New York) and a PhD in theology (Pontifical Bolivarian University, Bogotá). Since 2016, he has served as executive secretary of the National Coordination of Indigenous Ministry (CONAPI) of the Panamanian Bishops' Conference. And in 2019, he published a book in Spanish, "Danza en la casa de Ngöbo: Resiliencia de la 'Vida Plena' Ngäbe frente al neoliberalismo" (To Dance in Ngöbo's [God's] House: The Resilience of the Ngäbe 'Full Life' in the Face of Neoliberalism).

In 2010, he relocated to London and worked at two different UK charities - the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Marie Curie Cancer Care - as a project manager. In 2014, he returned to NYU in a newly created role as Assistant Director for Global Housing Administration where he oversees the housing administration for NYU's study away sites. Additionally, he works with NYU's external partners to generate revenue for the university and contribute to NYU's affordability efforts. Additionally, at NYU, John serves as President of the NYU Alumni Club in London. Facebook is establishing a 40-person oversight board to pass rulings on whether or not content should remain on their platform. The board aims to represent all regions of the world, rulings are set to be released in multiple languages and decisions about content to be made expeditiously. Only one researcher, Kate Klonick, was invited in to observe the process that went into establishing the framework for this oversight board. In this episode of Big Tech co-hosts David Skok and Taylor Owen speak with Kate Klonick, an assistant professor of law at St. John's University law school, and an affiliate fellow at Yale law school about what she witnessed in this process. Klonick was embedded in Melno Park without a non-disclosure agreement, given full access to meetings and was able to record all the conversations and workshops. Throughout the process, she maintained her academic immunity, not accepting anything from Facebook, not even a free hotel room. Klonick discusses the struggles faced by the team tasked with building the oversight board. At the beginning, it didn’t look like the project could be a success: “My lens is obviously from a legal perspective, and it's a little bit like when you're a hammer, everything's a nail. I look at a lot of the problems that I was seeing as they were creating this oversight board, and it was comparative constitutionalism, it was administrative law, it was democratic legitimacy.” Facebook continued to work on the oversight board, and as Kate admits, they did solve many of huge constitutional problems presented by content moderation. But she is still skeptical about how this board will scale, whether it will be overrun with appeals and how will the public will perceive its effectiveness.

His understanding of the global economic markets is up there with the best of the best. Richard is an advocate of significant government spending to bring on economic growth, and in E121 voiced that he is an advocate of what Ray Dalio refers to as MP3. While Richard Duncan is a black belt in terms of his knowledge, there are some questions that Richard has brought up that require the help of another expert.  Our guest for today is Gene Epstein, who recently stepped down from a 26-year stint as Economics and Books Editor of Barron's with plans to write long-form articles and books. Gene's last published book was "Econospinning: How to Read Between the Lines When the Media Manipulate the Numbers." He has taught economics at the City University of New York and St. John's University and worked as a senior economist for the New York Stock Exchange.  Today we are going to discuss... What the causes were of the Great Recession and what it can teach us about the future Whether or not we should look at Japan as a template for economic monetary policy If China's governmental investment in technology is a model that the US should start to implement more What our guest thinks about Ray Dalio's MP3     Learn more about our guest: Soho Forum: thesohoforum.org
