Three rabbis reunite after a hiatus with no agenda and plenty to say. They wade into the fraught waters of Israel, the war, Yom HaZikaron, and what it means to hold nuance in a community that often demands a party line — then somehow end up in a heated debate about strings in rock music, Charlie Daniels, and whether Phil Spector ruined "The Long and Winding Road." Josh admits he's been hiding from Israel discourse behind his guitar, Jeff cops to being emotionally "buffeted" by the whole thing, and Matt drops the news that he's heading to the pulpit of a major New York synagogue this summer. It's the classic Weird Being Jewish formula: serious stuff, silly detours, and genuine friendship holding it all together.

In this episode of The Andrew Parker Show, Andrew dives into the evolving identity of America's political parties through the lens of the “Big Tent” theory—and asks a critical question: when does inclusion go too far?Andrew explores how both parties have historically expanded their reach, but argues that today's Democratic Party has crossed a dangerous line by allowing deeply controversial and, in some cases, openly anti-Israel and anti-Semitic viewpoints into its ranks. Using the powerful backdrop of Israel's national days of remembrance and independence, he draws a stark contrast between the values of unity, sacrifice, and national identity—and the political divisions emerging in the United States. The episode also highlights the surprising political shift of longtime Democrat Alan Dershowitz, who now questions whether his party still aligns with his principles after decades of loyalty. This is a direct and thought-provoking conversation about political identity, moral boundaries, free speech, and the future of American party politics. If you care about where the country is heading—and what today's political alliances really mean—this is an episode you will not want to miss.Support the showThe Andrew Parker Show - Politics, Israel & The Law.  Follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and X. Subscribe to our email list at www.theandrewparkershow.comCopyright © 2026 The Andrew Parker Show - All Rights Reserved.

The Mishna states that when Yom Kippur fell on a Friday, preventing the meat from being cooked, the Babylonians would eat the goat sin offering raw. Rabbi Yochanan clarifies that these people were actually Alexandrians, but they were called Babylonians due to a general dislike of the Babylonians. The Mishna discusses various errors that can occur while setting up the showbread and the frankincense, such as placing one or both on the wrong day or burning the frankincense at the incorrect time. For each scenario, the text explores the resulting legal status and the solution, if there is one. A Mishna from Tractate Yoma mentions a case where the Tamid offering was brought too early and had to be burned because it was disqualified. A braita applies this same rule to a mincha offering where the kemitza was taken at night. This raises a question: if sanctified vessels do not normally sanctify their contents at night when offerings cannot be brought, why is the mincha disqualified? To resolve this, it is explained that the offering is sanctified enough to be disqualified even if it is not sanctified for the altar. However, Rabbi Zeira raises a difficulty from our Mishna, noting that when the bread is placed too early, it is not sanctified enough to be disqualified and can remain on the table for extra days. Raba resolves this by distinguishing between an act performed the night before it is due and an act performed several days early. Yet, this distinction still faces issues with the Mishna's case, as the bread should theoretically become sanctified on Friday night and be disqualified by the next Shabbat morning. Ultimately, two resolutions are offered to address this difficulty. The Mishna outlines how many days after baking the two loaves and the showbread may be eaten. Different scenarios are presented based on whether festivals fall before or after Shabbat, since these loaves cannot typically be baked on Shabbat or a festival. Rabbi Shimon disagrees with this, permitting the baking on a festival though not on Shabbat. Items whose value is sanctified can be redeemed whether they are ritually pure or impure. However, items sanctified within a sacred vessel possess inherent sanctity and cannot be redeemed even if they become impure. The only exception to this rule is a blemished animal, which retains the possibility of being redeemed despite its status.

Designed with education in mind, the novel serves as a meaningful tool for educators and families to spark thoughtful conversation around grief, empathy, and human stories beyond headlines. Their dialogue invites us to reflect on both absence and presence, asking whose stories we tell and how we carry the legacy of those we've lost.  Learn more about The Jewish Education Project at jewishedproject.orgThis episode was produced by Miranda Lapides and Rina Cohen Schwarz. Today is Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers. Israel commemorates its fallen with an intensity that is difficult to fully grasp from the outside - a national experience of grief, gratitude, and memory that touches every life. Few works capture this more powerfully than “The Silver Platter” by Natan Alterman. Each time I read it, I am moved to tears of gratitude and awe for the young men and women who gave - and continue to give - their lives so that the State of Israel can not only endure, but flourish. Without their sacrifice, Israel would not exist. The transition from Yom HaZikaron immediately into Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, is not incidental. It is designed to allow us to experience and appreciate the loss and the joy, the dark and the light, the pain and the beauty which coexist for Israel at every moment. Today asks something of us: to feel both. To carry the weight of what has been lost, and at the same time, to recognize the miracle that continues because of it. In this powerful Land of Israel Fellowship session from Israel, Jeremy Gimpel reflects on the emotional and spiritual weight of the days between Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut, where national grief meets miraculous rebirth. Ari Abramowitz shares a deeply personal dvar Torah after missing a night of counting the Omer for the first time in years. What begins as a moment of failure becomes a profound spiritual insight: The Hebrew word for “wound” (nega) contains the same letters as “delight” (oneg). The difference is how it's revealed. Through vulnerability, marriage, and faith, Ari explores how setbacks can become gateways to deeper connection with God, with others, and within ourselves. Even in weakness, we remain “Adam” created with divine dignity. This message connects to the larger story unfolding in Israel today: Out of national pain is emerging unity, faith, and a renewed sense of purpose. Episode 09: Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut: How Should We Relate? SHOW NOTES This episode addresses a question many alumni struggle with: how to relate to Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut. Many who went through Shapell's and Midreshet Rachel v'Chaya developed an appreciation for the State of Israel and for the IDF. At the same time, many now find themselves in communities where these days are not marked at all. Even within Israel, there is a wide range of approaches. Some communities do not observe these days, while others mark them in meaningful ways, and for some they are central to the year. That leaves many people unsure how to think about it. Is this a hashkafic question, a halachic one, a communal one, or a personal one? And what do you do when your instincts don't align with your environment? In this episode, Rabbi Shurin offers a framework to help think through these questions with clarity. What does Jewish history—its incredible heaviness (Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron) and its incredible inspiration (Yom Ha'atzmaut)—ask of me? Does the passage of time affect the answer to that question? We are 81 years from the Holocaust. We are in the midst of yet another war with Iran and its proxies. What is our current responsibility to the Shoah and to the State of Israel? If we choose to disengage from all this heaviness, if we choose to not make Jewish history our problem, if we choose just to live our lives in Greater Boston, send out kids to school, do our jobs, come home, call it a day, that choice is tempting. That choice is understandable. What is the cost of that choice? To grapple with these hard questions during this season of the three Yoms, we will examine two Talmudic stories from Ta'anit 23A. The first is the story of Choni who sees a man planting carob trees and asks how long it will take for the carob to be ready to eat? 70 years. Will you still be here in 70 years? No. But I inherited a world that had carob trees that had been planted by my ancestors, and I want to leave a world that has carob trees for my descendants. The second, on the heels of the first, has Choni waking up from a deep sleep of 70 years. When he wakes up, he goes to his old haunts, his home, his shul, his study hall, and no one recognizes him. He cries out: “I am Choni.” But he is invisible. Unseen. Unrecognized. Everybody he knew is dead. Nobody alive knows him. He dies of a broken heart, prompting the climactic rabbinic teaching: oh chavrutah oh mitutah. Give me community or give me death. So many questions:What is the meaning of each story? How do these two stories connect? The editors of the Talmud intentionally connect them. What do the two stories mean to the three Yoms and to our personal connection to Jewish history and to Jewish destiny? Can we plant for a future that we will not see?Can we live in a future in which we are not seen?

Every year at this time, Israeli society takes a trip on an emotional roller coaster. On Yom HaShoah we make time to pay tribute to the victims - and survivors - of the Holocaust. A week later, on Yom HaZikaron, we remember those who lost their lives while fighting for our freedom and our survival. Then, the very next day, Independence Day, we celebrate like there's no tomorrow. If we don't remember the sacrifices made for the State of Israel, the thinking goes, how can we truly celebrate? So this week on Israel Hour Radio, we mourn: remembering victims of the Holocaust, soldiers killed in action, and victims of terror. Next week, we celebrate Israel's 78th birthday in style. Rabbi Yehuda Glick was a little boy leading a regular life in Flatbush – Brooklyn, when, at the age of 8, his parents called his siblings and little Yehuda up to their room for a chat. On his way up the stairs, he had no idea what he was in for, but more than 50 years later, the answer is crystal clear, and Yehuda has been living quite an interesting life in Israel, ever since he and his family arrived here in 1974. Goel sat with Yehuda on Yom Hazikaron, and spoke with him about his story, and a bunch of other important topics, including the danger of comfort.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode on Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror. Since February, the IDF has begun releasing a series of probes into the disasters on and leading up to the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, massacre of some 1,200 and 250 hostages taken to Gaza. Today, we look at the recent reports on the battles at the Zikim IDF base -- notable for the bravery of its commanders in saving their recruits -- and two smaller communities, Nir Yitzhak and Ein Hashlosha. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak’s well-armed civil defense squad fought off dozens of Hamas-led terrorists, largely preventing them from rampaging through the community on October 7.This is in stark opposition to what happened at Ein Hashlosha, another community in the Gaza Envelope. Fabian fills us in. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. This Wednesday, Israelis will mark Yom HaZikaron, the Memorial Day for Israel's Fallen Soldiers. As of last count, there were more than 25,000 of them. Although Israel has a highly developed culture of grieving and mourning, as a country that has suffered war and bloodshed since its first days, an unusual commemoration project has literally taken over the public sphere this year. It began on a small scale, with friends and relative of soldiers killed in action since October 7 hanging up stickers featuring their photos and other interesting tidbits about them. It quickly spread to the point that in some places in Israel – like the Tel Aviv Hashalom train station – the entire space is wallpapered in them. On the Haaretz Podcast, Dr. Noam Tirosh, head of the Department of Communication Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, who has spent the past few months studying these stickers, spoke to Judy Maltz about what he has learned. According to Tirosh, "the stickers are clearly an attempt by people to tell a wider story. The fallen soldiers were not only soldiers. They were lovers. They were football fans. They were friends of lots of people. They were human beings."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
