In this 215th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss the CDC's new super simple recommendations on respiratory viruses, and learn from the CDC that treatment can be prevention. While the CDC never mentions vitamin D in these new guidelines, a new meta-analysis finds that vitamin D supplementation is protective against bad Covid outcomes, especially in people who were previously deficient. We also discuss how podcasts are stepping in for institutions, sparking intellectual connections that the academy used to provide—all of this in the context of genocide and perpetrator studies. Also: strictly mechanistic explanations are standing in for evolutionary ones in many fields—including ophthalmology, dentistry, and psychology—to the detriment of all. Last Friday, the CDC announced recent changes in its guidance, including guidance for schools. In today's episode, Emily and Duane discuss a summary of the recent changes, including changes in the requirements to mask on school buses. The CDC says masks are no longer recommended indoors. Gaydos and Chad talk with listeners who say they will still wear them anyway. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The CDC recently updated its guidance on masks and respirators, due to the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. In addition, the CDC updated its guidance on work restrictions for health care workers who are exposed to or test positive for COVID-19. This information is current as of 1/14/2022.
Governor Murphy wanted to keep school requirements on quarantining for COVID positive students and staff at the 10-14 day guidance that is now, according to the CDC, outdated. Thankfully he was overruled and NJ schools are free to update their requirements to the now 5 days that is level with the CDC.
The latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on isolation and testing for COVID-19 has received intense pushback. Many health experts are now criticizing what the CDC has said and how its officials have said it. This includes the American Medical Association, which issued a strong rebuke. Dr. Gerald Harmon, president of the AMA, joins Williams Brangham to discuss. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
As the new COVID-19 variant surges through the nation, the CDC faces backlash over their most recent guidance, shortening the isolation period from ten days to five from an asymptomatic positive test. Former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield weighs in on the matter. This past week marked the one-year anniversary of the riot at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Since the attack, Congress has seen an increase in threats against lawmakers. FOX News Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram reports on those threats and reveals how it has taken a toll on all of those working on Capitol Hill.

The CDC has reduced the isolation period for asymptomatic people who test positive for Covid-19 from 10 days to five. Plus breaking news overnight — a shooting spree in Colorado has left four people dead and injured at least three others. Also, what's next for stranded travelers after more flight cancellations and as airlines deal with the Omicron variant? And a TODAY exclusive — the first interview with the man behind the viral Tom Cruise deep fake videos.
There is new CDC guidance for people who test positive for COVID-19. The government health agency says if people are COVID-positive and have no symptoms, they can now isolate for five days instead of 10—and they *don't* need a negative test to end that isolation period. If you're vaccinated with a booster and were exposed to the virus, you will *no longer* need to try to stay home or quarantine--but you should wear a mask around others for 10 days. If you're unvaccinated, you still need to try to quarantine for five full days after exposure. Thousands of flights have been canceled in the last week, in part because COVID has left airlines with a shortage of crew members. The U.S. now averages 260 pediatric COVID hospitalizations a day. That is up nearly 30 percent from last week. Police are investigating a deadly series of shootings across multiple locations in Denver and Lakewood, Colorado, yesterday. In Los Angeles, the LAPD has released video evidence from a police shooting last week that killed a 14-year-old girl. California's Sierra Nevada mountains have had up to 14 feet of snow in recent days, blocking many of the local roads. More snow is coming during this stretch of severe weather out west.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
