The Best Boss Bootcamp Podcast

In this episode of The Best Boss Podcast, we bring together a powerhouse panel of leadership coaches to tackle a pressing issue in today's workplace: the backlash against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. As companies reconsider their DEI strategies, we explore the merits, challenges, and future of inclusive leadership. With perspectives from across industries and global experiences, we discuss how leaders can navigate this moment with wisdom, strategy, and a focus on innovation. Beyond the headlines and politics, "The Hive" examines why DEI matters—not just as a moral imperative but as a business advantage. From fostering innovation to increasing employee engagement and performance, inclusion is more than just a buzzword—it's a critical leadership skill. Tune in as we explore practical ways to create a culture of belonging and continue this essential conversation in a productive, meaningful way. Key Takeaways: DEI is Not One Thing: Diversity, equity, and inclusion are distinct but interconnected. Diversity is about representation, equity is about access, and inclusion is about ensuring all voices are heard. The Business Case is Clear: Research shows that companies with diverse leadership teams see higher innovation revenue and financial performance. Inclusion directly impacts engagement, creativity, and profitability. Psychological Safety is Foundational: Employees perform best when they feel included, safe, and valued. Without inclusivity, organizations risk losing top talent and stifling innovation. The Backlash is Real, But the Conversation Must Continue: While some organizations are rolling back DEI efforts, the need for inclusion has not disappeared. Leaders must find ways to evolve and sustain meaningful inclusion efforts. This is Not a Zero-Sum Game: Inclusion doesn't mean taking opportunities away from one group to give to another—it's about expanding access and creating a more innovative, high-performing workplace. Tokenism is Not the Answer: True DEI efforts go beyond surface-level representation. Leaders must embed inclusion into the organization's culture, values, and decision-making. Innovation Requires Diversity: The most successful organizations are those that bring in different perspectives. When diverse voices are welcomed, companies generate better solutions and drive long-term success. Leadership Starts with Reflection: Before making changes, leaders must clarify their values around DEI and align their actions accordingly. Effective inclusion strategies start with a clear vision and commitment. Coaching Can Help Leaders Navigate This Challenge: If you're feeling uncertain about how to move forward with DEI in your organization, working with a coach can provide clarity and actionable strategies. Inclusion is a Leadership Skill, Not a Checkbox: The best leaders know that inclusion isn't a one-time effort—it's an ongoing practice that requires self-awareness, intentionality, and courage. In today's episode Simone reflects on the tokenism of corporations and other workplaces in the ways they treat Black people and people of colour. They begin by thinking about some scenes in season 2 of the TV series Severance which represent this dynamic and which have resonating with many viewers of colour. Then they consider the current situation in the USA where the Trump administration is seeking to destroy “DEI”, the emptiness of DEI programs in general, and the failure of corporate culture to both do adequate DEI work, and to respond to these current cultural and political attacks. They then look at this article: The tokenism trap: 7 ways it can hurt your workplace https://recruitcrm.io/blogs/tokenism-in-recruitment/They go through its recommendations but also heavily critique it, pointing out the problems in the way it frames and thinks about DEI, and the ways that it is representative of corporate and structural issues within White Supremacy. For example the framing of DEI as something that you do to make your corporation more profitable rather than something you do because it's the right thing to do. When doing this they also draw on their own work being hired to do mediation within corporations and also their lived experience.Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.

In this episode of Leading in Color, host Sarah Morgan continues the BlackBlogsMatter / BlackPodsMatter challenge with an eye-opening discussion on “Recognizing OpporCOONities.” Building on a concept she first explored in 2018, Sarah revisits the idea of how individuals can be lured into compromising situations under the guise of opportunity. She breaks down the history of the term “coon” and how it has evolved into an insult used within Black communities. The episode explores the dangerous allure of “opporcoonities”—opportunities that, on the surface, appear beneficial but ultimately serve to uphold harmful power structures. Sarah offers 5 key questions to help listeners assess whether an opportunity is genuine or just an opporcoonity disguised as progress. By recognizing when they are being used for performative diversity or empty gestures, listeners can make better decisions about where to invest their time and energy.

Dr. Cameron McCoy steps into our space with a narrative that bridges the divide between the past and present, honoring the resilience and valor of African American Marines. His book, "Contested Valor: African American Marines in the Age of Power, Protest, and Tokenism," serves as a backdrop to a profound conversation about identity, mentorship, and the transformative power of education, coinciding with Black History Month. We're not just talking about history; we're living it, as Cameron takes us from his D.C. roots to his compelling evolution as a soldier and a scholar, emphasizing the work ethic and perseverance passed down from our families. Our dialogue traverses the journey of the Black Marines, whose service in eras from WWII to Vietnam defied the insidious narratives of social Darwinism and white supremacy. It's a tale of integration and identity, where the military serves as the crucible for change, offering access to education and shaping the lives of young Black men and women. Cameron's story is a testament to this legacy, as he recounts his own experiences—from track and field to becoming a Marine—revealing how these institutions mold personal and collective identities. The thread of mentorship weaves through our discussion as we acknowledge those who have guided us and underscore the importance of supporting the next generation.Support the show

Michael points to a broad public retrofitting scheme as one measure that would have used the billions for transformation. Rory is also joined by Mike Allen of Focus Ireland who highlights how shockingly there was not one mention of homelessness in the Budget, and no increase in funding for preventing homelessness. The thread of mentorship weaves through our discussion as we acknowledge those who have guided us and underscore the importance of supporting the next generation.

When we consider the fabric of our society, it's easy to miss the threads that are only partially woven into the whole, particularly when it comes to the inclusion of individuals with disabilities. Join Antonio, Debra and Neil from axschat to unravel the misconceptions and realities of partial inclusion, where tokenistic gestures often replace genuine integration. We scrutinize the current legislative landscape, examining its efficacy and questioning whether it inadvertently overlooks those in dire need of support. With a reflective eye, we peel back layers to reveal the stark difference between meeting minimum standards and embracing true inclusion.Venturing further into the heart of the matter, we confront the monumental challenges of creating inclusive experiences within corporate structures. We acknowledge the pivotal role that design plays in mental health and the essential need for equivalent access to products and services. The conversation pivots to consider the weight of responsibility designers and companies bear when their creations fall short, potentially fostering negative self-perceptions and mental health crises. It's a candid discussion on the broader societal implications of these systemic issues and the urgency of strategic shifts to avoid perpetuating exclusion. In our final segment, we tackle the disparities present in healthcare systems and their impact on families touched by disabilities. From personal anecdotes to global investment trends, we explore how equitable resource distribution is often more of an ideal than a reality. We confront the punitive nature of systems that discourage employment among those with disabilities, and advocate for systemic changes that support rather than stifle individual potential. With a nod to the importance of accurate data in addressing healthcare challenges, we close by acknowledging the support that keeps our conversations alive and our community engaged.Support the showFollow axschat on social mediaTwitter:https://twitter.com/axschathttps://twitter.com/AkwyZhttps://twitter.com/neilmillikenhttps://twitter.com/debraruhLinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/antoniovieirasantos/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/axschat/Vimeohttps://vimeo.com/akwyz

Diversity of What, Exactly?

In less than a decade, the number of American companies with either an official department, an HR initiative, or a job title that includes the words “diversity, equity, and inclusion” has ballooned. In fact, by the end of 2020, U.S. companies were spending an estimated $3.4 billion on so-called “DEI” initiatives.  Proponents say DEI initiatives are necessary to fight workplace discrimination. Despite how quickly the trend has grown in recent years, however, it's not working. In 2019, after spending $114 million on an initiative aimed at increasing and promoting diversity, Google's workforce was still only 3% African American. Last summer, The Economist published findings that suggested DEI programs “do more to protect against litigation than to reduce discrimination.”   Partly behind the failure of DEI initiatives to accomplish their stated goals is how the terms are defined. Diversity is never measured in terms of belief, political party, or religion but, particularly in corporate settings, is reduced down to only categories of race, gender, and sexuality. This is why Time magazine evaluated the success of Google's diversity program based only in terms of the ethnic breakdown of their employees. Of course, diversity is not less than ethnicity, but it should certainly include more.   At least part of the history behind defining down these terms emerges from academic circles and the growing influence of critical theory. This quasi-Marxist way of seeing all human history and every human interaction as a power struggle places every human being into two categories: oppressor or oppressed. Moral status is then awarded depending on how many "oppressed" categories with which one identifies. What's left is an approach to life and human interaction that does not elevate what is good, but a purely negative ideology driven by an arbitrary rejection of what's subjectively felt to be bad.  For decades, critical theory has stepped out of the academy into other spheres of culture, including media, government, and increasingly the marketplace. Though very few people have actually studied the academic source material, our wider culture is now in what might be called a “critical theory mood.” Companies spend billions of dollars implementing “diversity, equity, and inclusion” programs, because they're under tremendous pressure by cultural gatekeepers to conform and, in effect, define “diversity” of employees by a small, select group of external traits.  “Diversity” that doesn't include ideological diversity, for example, isn't really diversity. Hiring a racially or sexually diverse workforce that is otherwise trapped in groupthink when it comes to religion and worldview does not make a better workforce. The belief that group identity should determine who deserves a job, a raise, or a contract is based on a flawed view of who human beings are. While our gender or ethnic backgrounds can have an enormous impact on our lives, they do not ground our value or determine our understanding of life and the world. Nor do they determine what kind of employee we might be.  In 2020, the Virginia General Assembly created the Governor's Office of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” A few weeks ago, Virginia's current chief diversity officer, Martin Brown, sparked controversy when he was caught on video saying “DEI is dead.” Brown's job is mandated by the Virginia legislature, but instead of going along with the way these words are currently understood, Brown is committed to what he called “a different kind of civil discourse.” The name of his department has now been changed to the Virginia Office of Diversity, Opportunity, and Inclusion.   Many business leaders, struggling to tread water amidst the DEI tidal wave, know discrimination is wrong. They also realize that many “DEI” programs in practice actually promote discrimination based on a faulty understanding of these terms. Virginia's chief diversity officer is offering a different, better way. Promoting equal opportunity, instead of making promises of equal outcomes that cannot possibly be fulfilled, treats every human being with the respect and dignity of equal consideration and high expectations.   Most other expressions of “DEI” are solutions in search of a problem that, in the end, will only result in more problems.   This Breakpoint was co-authored by Maria Baer.
