Kieran Culkin may have just taken home Oscar gold for "A Real Pain", but before "Succession" made him a household name, he was Igby Slocumb—a rich, rebellious teen navigating trauma, privilege, and a series of bad decisions in 2002's "Igby Goes Down". This week, Mike Field and Mike Butler revisit this indie darling of the early 2000s, and... well, let's just say not everyone was charmed. From trust fund angst to aimless rebellion, the Mikes dive into why these kinds of characters don't always resonate—especially when wrapped in a blanket of affluence. Despite strong performances from Culkin, Jeff Goldblum, Susan Sarandon, and Claire Danes, Igby Goes Down might have left us a little cold. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. Jesse Eisenberg owes it all to an internet pop-up ad. A few years ago, while at an impasse with a screenplay about two friends on a trip to Mongolia, the writer-director and star of movies like The Social Network read an ad for “Auschwitz tours - with lunch.” And that jarring phrase unleashed an avalanche of ideas about, as he puts it, “the irony of wanting to connect to your ancestors' pain but at the same time not being willing to experience any pain yourself: stay at the Radisson, eat your continental breakfast, have your croissant in the morning and your coffee in the van going to a concentration camp.” Skip forward to 2025, and the film unlocked in his imagination by that ad – A Real Pain – is an awards season frontrunner, nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor at this year's Oscars. Its story of two cousins – David, played by Jesse, and Kieran Culkin as Benji – on a Holocaust “trauma trip” through Poland is a moving meditation on the shame it's easy to feel in today's world for feeling unsatisfied with life, when we think about the greater hardships our ancestors may have suffered. it's devastating and deliriously funny in equal measure, not to mention bold in how it refuses an Eat Pray Love narrative of having international travel solve these characters' problems back home. In A Real Pain, Culkin's erratic livewire Benji ends up exactly back where he started – but we as an audience are changed. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Jesse tells me about how the film worsened rather than resolved his complicated feelings around what pain he's entitled to feel. We get into that devastating final shot at the end of the film and why it is we feel the urge to connect to our pasts, with services like Ancestry and 23andMe. Listen out also for the parts of Jesse's life he folded into the script – such as his use of medication and medication to tackle OCD and depression – and how Jesse reflects on the unanswerable question of, how much grief to allocate to the terrible situation in the world right now, before we cease functioning. It's a fascinating chat about a fascinating film.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Our guests this week were ‘A Real Pain'...just joking, Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin were actually really nice... They sit down with Simon to discuss the comedy-drama, directed, written, produced by and starring Eisenberg alongside Culkin. They play two mismatched cousins David and Benji on a tour of Poland, the ancestral home of their late-grandmother, where they hope to reconnect with their Jewish roots—and each other. With Benji lacking in a social filer (as, delightfully, is Kieran Culkin is in real life—just ask Simon!) their trip isn't as straightforward as the uptight David planned. Hear what Mark thought of the film, plus reviews of ‘Maria'—Pablo Larraín's biopic of legendary opera singer Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie), reflecting on her public and private life in its last days in 1970s Paris—and ‘Babygirl', the psychosexual thriller starring Nicole Kidman as a high-powered but privately dissatisfied CEO embroiled in an affair with Harris Dickinson's much younger intern at her firm. Few films define holiday nostalgia as perfectly as Home Alone. In this Home Alone (1990) Movie Review, we revisit the timeless story of Kevin McCallister, the mischievous yet resourceful eight-year-old who accidentally gets left behind during the Christmas holidays. Directed by Chris Columbus and written by the legendary John Hughes, Home Alone continues to hold a unique place in cinematic history as a family comedy that delivers heart, laughs, and the unmistakable magic of the holiday season. Over 30 years later, it still has audiences of all ages doubling over with laughter and feeling the warmth of home and family. The Story That Sparked a Global PhenomenonAt its heart, Home Alone is simple yet ingenious. When Kevin (played brilliantly by Macaulay Culkin) wishes for his family to disappear after a rough night with his siblings, he wakes up the next morning to find his wish has seemingly come true. In a mad rush to catch a flight for their Christmas vacation in Paris, the McCallister clan accidentally leaves Kevin behind. What follows is a series of hilarious and heart-pounding escapades as Kevin fends for himself while also outsmarting two bumbling burglars, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), who are targeting his home. The setup is classic John Hughes: relatable yet heightened situations, endearing characters, and comedic chaos that is both innocent and wildly entertaining. Kevin's solo adventures—shopping for groceries, watching “grown-up” movies, and constructing elaborate booby traps—are delivered with such charm and humour that it's impossible not to root for him. The film transforms an eight-year-old kid's loneliness into empowerment, making it both touching and triumphant.Macaulay Culkin: A Star Is BornIf there's one performance that defines Home Alone, it's Macaulay Culkin's. At just ten years old, Culkin became a global phenomenon, and for good reason. He's mischievous, charismatic, and endlessly watchable. Culkin brings Kevin McCallister to life with a mix of childlike innocence and self-assured resourcefulness that feels natural and effortless. His comedic timing—delivering classic lines like “Keep the change, ya filthy animal” or his perfectly executed scream in front of the bathroom mirror—is nothing short of iconic.Kevin's journey from a frustrated youngest sibling to a confident, self-reliant hero gives Home Alone its emotional core. While the comedy is front and centre, Culkin can balance humour with a vulnerability that elevates the film beyond a standard slapstick romp.Pesci and Stern: The Perfect Comedy VillainsA comedy is only as strong as its antagonists, and Home Alone delivers two of the most memorable villains in movie history. Joe Pesci's Harry and Daniel Stern's Marv—collectively known as the “Wet Bandits”—are equal parts menacing and hysterical. While Harry brings a tough, scheming edge to their duo, Marv provides endless slapstick moments that make him a loveable doofus.Their dynamic is so effective because the movie allows their misfortunes to escalate with cartoonish delight. Kevin's traps—ranging from icy stairs to swinging paint cans—provide some of the most gleefully painful moments in comedy history. Watching the Wet Bandits fall victim to Kevin's booby traps remains endlessly entertaining, no matter how many times you've seen it.Chris Columbus' Direction and John Hughes' WritingHome Alone brought together two powerhouses: Chris Columbus, who would later helm Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two Harry Potter films, and John Hughes, the mastermind behind classics like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Hughes' writing gives the film its wit, heart, and timeless humour, while Columbus' direction brings that vision to life with vibrant pacing and a keen understanding of comedic timing. The film moves seamlessly between laugh-out-loud moments and quieter, more heartfelt scenes. One of the most touching subplots involves Kevin's neighbour, Old Man Marley, who is rumoured to be a terrifying figure but turns out to be a lonely, kind-hearted man seeking reconciliation with his estranged family. This storyline adds depth to the film's themes of forgiveness, family, and the importance of connection.Cinematography and Score: Capturing the MagicJulio Macat's cinematography captures the cozy, wintry charm of suburban Chicago during the holidays. The McCallister house—now iconic in its own right—becomes a playground of chaos, warmth, and creativity. Each room provides the perfect backdrop for Kevin's traps and antics, while the snowy exteriors add a picture-perfect Christmas vibe.John Williams' score, meanwhile, is the cherry on top. The legendary composer (known for Star Wars and Jurassic Park) delivers a whimsical yet grand soundtrack that perfectly complements the film's tone. Tracks like “Somewhere in My Memory” evoke nostalgia and warmth, ensuring that Home Alone doesn't just make us laugh but also pulls at our heartstrings. Why Home Alone Stands the Test of TimeWhat makes Home Alone so enduring is its universal appeal. It's a perfect holiday film for families, kids, and adults alike. At its core, it's about the importance of family, even when they drive us crazy. Kevin's realisation that he misses his family—and his mother's desperate journey home—resonates with anyone who understands the true meaning of Christmas. But beyond its themes, Home Alone remains endlessly rewatchable because it's just plain fun. The slapstick comedy, clever dialogue, and standout performances make it a film that never feels dated. Whether you're watching it for the first time or the 30th, it still feels like a gift waiting to be unwrapped.Final ThoughtsIn our Home Alone (1990) Movie Review, we can confidently say this film remains a holiday classic for a reason. With its brilliant performances, timeless humour, and heartfelt message, Home Alone captures the magic of childhood and the warmth of family like few movies can. Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister is a hero for the ages, while Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern give us villains we love to laugh at.More than three decades later, Home Alone continues to bring joy to new generations, reminding us all that sometimes being “left alone” can lead to the greatest adventures. So this holiday season, grab some popcorn, put on your coziest socks, and revisit the film that made booby traps cool and Christmas unforgettable. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/
Quincy Jones Receives Posthumous Oscar, and Daughter Gives His SpeechAt the Governors Awards, Rashida Jones spoke on behalf of her father, who died earlier this month at the age of 91.Before his death two weeks ago, the musician and producer Quincy Jones wrote a speech he intended to deliver at the Governors Awards, where he would receive an honorary Oscar at the ceremony created by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On Sunday night in Hollywood, his actress daughter Rashida Jones delivered that speech on his behalf before a rapt audience.“As a teenager growing up in Seattle, I would sit for hours in the theater and dream about composing for films,” she said while channeling her father, who was a Black trailblazer in Hollywood: “When I was a young film composer, you didn't even see faces of color working in the studio commissaries.”Nominated seven times, Jones was given a different honorary Oscar — the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award — in 1995, back when these awards were still part of the televised Oscar broadcast. To shorten that show, the honorary awards were spun off into their own event in 2009.Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez staked their seats out early while the directors Luca Guadagnino (repping both “Challengers” and “Queer”) and Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) compared notes on film formats. The “Succession” stars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin reconnected on the terrace outside the party; both men are supporting-actor contenders; Strong for “The Apprentice,” Culkin for “A Real Pain.” And the stars of “Emilia Perez,” Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, proved to be popular presences in every corner of the ballroom. The first honoree of the night was Juliet Taylor, who has cast more than 100 films over the course of her career including “The Exorcist,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Annie Hall.” While accepting her Oscar, she described her job as being “able to appreciate actors when they're not all that likable and appreciate directors when they're not easy.”Daniel Craig came out to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to the producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who have served as the stewards of the James Bond franchise for nearly three decades. After taking the reins of Eon Productions from their father, Albert Broccoli, the half-siblings produced the last nine Bond films beginning with “Goldeneye,” Pierce Brosnan's first foray in the role, all the way up to Daniel Craig's final Bond outing, “No Time to Die.”-Kyle Buchanan
Welcome back ragers to the best movie review podcast on the planet. The rage rolls on from the Film Rage Studio. This week the Film Rage Crew watched The Rock save Christmas. Then they took in the directorial debut of Jesse Eisenberg which stars himself and the best of the Culkin's. And finally they went to a Mystery Movie, not having any idea of what the film would be. Unfortunately it was Gladiator II and unfortunately it was about as good as the Crew had imagined it would be. Oh yeah, and Jim had to watch some Adam Sandler movie from 1989 in the Rage or Dare segment. "A Real Pain" had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it won positive reviews for Jesse Eisenberg's direction, screenplay, and performances from him and Kieran Culkin. The film, only the actor's second directorial feature, is already being talked about as a potential awards season player, and we were lucky enough to chat with Eisenberg for a few minutes during the theatrical promotion of the film to gather his thoughts on the reception toward the movie, hear interesting tidbits from behind-the-scenes in working with Culkin, what he learned from his last film " When You Finish Saving The World," and more. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Searchlight Pictures and is eligible in all categories for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Eisenberg), Best Supporting Actor (Culkin) and Best Original Screenplay. In this episode of Cafe Bitcoin, the crew discusses the failed launch of a Trump-branded token, which aimed to raise $300 million but only sold $18 million before crashing in value. We highlight the importance of distinguishing Bitcoin from other cryptocurrencies and note the political pandering often associated with crypto projects. The conversation shifts to global Bitcoin adoption, focusing on smaller countries like El Salvador and Suriname, which are exploring Bitcoin as a national currency. We also discuss MicroStrategy's Bitcoin acquisition strategy, led by Michael Saylor, and its role in bridging traditional finance with Bitcoin. Finally, we touch on how pro athletes and influential figures are gradually becoming more involved with Bitcoin. The demigod, John Candy, partners with one of the 80's most iconic directors, John Hughes, to bring us a larger than life comedy. Can the stand out performances of Candy, Culkin, and company, be enough to salvage a classic fish out of water scenario? Can John Hughes create enough space for Candy's first major lead AND make it out from under his own Brat-pack shadow? either way, one things for sure... he's cooking our garbage. —————————————————————— **Also, we have a Patreon. A 90's classic....kinda. Join Alec and Erik as they discuss Macaulay Culkin's departure from cute mischievous roles and into his preteen murderous phase. Oh and Elijah Wood! This one is fun and a little scary, sorta. Enjoy our discussion on The Good son.
Mark (Elijah Wood), a young boy who loses his mother, must stay with his extended family while his father is away on business. Mark becomes acquainted with his cousin Henry (Macaulay Culkin). However, the extent of Henry's depravity becomes clear when Mark sees him kill a neighbor's dog and intentionally create a traffic pileup on the highway. After a supposed mishap on an icy pond with Henry's sister Connie (Quinn Culkin), Mark tries to reveal Henry's crimes before it's too late. Host Drew has picked a very notable choice for killer kids movies from the 90's that created some shock for the world with popular child actor Macaulay Culkin! Now we have a sociopathic child, bent on getting all others out of his way and engaging in his twisted satisfactions in... "The Good Son"! This movie has some ups and downs, but you can't deny the creep factor that Culkin brings to the screen. Join us for this discussion and some fun trivia and a look into our own childhood as well! In this episode one of Forever Midnight's top tier Patreon patrons chose 1990's Jacob's ladder for the crew to check and chat about! It had been many MOONS since Jef, Josh and Brian set eyes upon Tim Robbins' beautiful buns or the rest of this mind freak of a film. Filled to the brim with every mafia style wise guy actor as well as a ton of other very familiar faces, this underrated flick is one worth revisiting. Plus the imagery alone is worth a watch, even though it might have been burgled from some of the best artists ever. Regardless It stands as an awesome peek into the 1990's and it even has THE CULKIN! This week I was thrilled to chat with star David Krumholtz and writer-director Bob Byington about their new movie, Lousy Carter. It's a wide-ranging conversation, touching on topics from shooting during the age of Covid to where Krumholtz was when he got the call to audition for Oppenheimer, and I hope you find it as fun to listen to as it was for me to conduct. If you enjoyed it, I hope you share it with a friend. A little extra this week: I hope you check out both Lousy Carter and Byington's body of work. Everyone says they're tired of the same old mush at the multiplex; well, here's a chance to dive into a body of work you may not be familiar with. Some highlights: Byington and Krumholtz previously worked together on Frances Ferguson, which you can watch for free on Amazon Prime; it is charmingly dry and occasionally cutting without coming across as meanspirited. Star Kaley Wheless gives a realistic and somewhat complicated performance as the substitute teacher convicted of sleeping with an (of-legal-age) student, while Krumholtz's turn at the end as a group therapist is both humorous and humane. Somebody Up There Likes Me (available for free on Peacock and for rental elsewhere) is an amusing look at a slacker floating through life starring Nick Offerman and Keith Poulson, and the framing device—we skip ahead five years each sequence, giving us 35 years in the life of Poulson's character—is weirdly affecting. The passage of time comes for us all, or some such. Infinity Baby (streaming on Kanopy and Amazon) is probably the oddest of these four films: set in the not-too-distant future, Kieran Culkin's Ben works for a pharmaceutical company that accidentally made babies that never grow older. He's interesting as a free-floating cad—and Culkin is an absolutely magnetic screen presence—but I think the best performance belongs to Martin Starr (Silicon Valley, Party Down). He's playing slightly against type here: rather than a sure-of-himself-know-it-all, he's a little more fidgety, a little unsteady. And that unsteadiness pays off in the film's closing moments, as we see the results of an unexpected responsibility.

Many of us enjoy a drink after work, I love having a drink on the weekends, but at what point does our relationship with alcohol become problematic? Our guest this week on A Voice and Beyond is Andrew Culkin, author of Amanda: A Cautionary Tale of Alcoholism, which speaks the truth about alcoholism not only from the perspective of the person who has the addiction but also describes the suffering of those around the alcoholic. On February 21st, 2020, Andrew's wife of twenty-five years, Amanda, passed away from alcoholism. During her nearly two decades of decline, Amanda had attended seven rehabs, received four DUI convictions, and had several accidents. The stigma and shame attached to the disease only made her situation more difficult, as it drove her into isolation and depression.Andrew describes alcoholism as a health disease that is no different from cancer or heart disease because alcoholics have no desire to be alcoholics any more than a cancer patient wishes to have cancer. Therefore, he has made it his mission to promote a different perspective on how we observe a struggling alcoholic. He tells us that the shame and embarrassment of the alcoholic needs to be met with empathy, care, and knowing they have support instead of condemnation and embarrassment.During this interview, Andrew explains the 4 stages of alcoholism, why some people are more susceptible to succumbing to the disease, and his own traumatizing and exhausting experiences throughout Amanda's alcoholic career. This interview is surely thought-provoking, and at times, very triggering for me.
