Basit Kareem Iqbal's new book The Dread Heights: Tribulation and Refuge after the Syrian Revolution (Fordham UP, 2025) uses ethnographic scenes from Jordan and Canada to contextualize the role of Muslim charities and community organizations that support displaced refugees from the Syrian catastrophe. Through these encounters, however, we learn not only of the limitations of secular humanitarian projects, but we are also privy to the deep theological enterprise of notions of trial and tribulation of those caught between mobility and immobility and various entangled temporalities. Iqbal and his interlocutors grapple with the asymmetrical realities of a Divine's mercy and compassion set against violence, horror, and death. It is at these junctures that we encounter an ethnography of theology, that is, how Qur'anic principles are fundamentally tested, negotiated, and stretched by everyday survivors, be they activists or humanitarian aid workers, as they forge a path ahead in the world of the living. The interpretations that arise from Iqbal's interlocutors, be they Salafi or Sufi oriented, challenges readers to contend with religious and theological sensibilities of a secular world of humanitarianism and international aid but also centers the voices of refugees. Iqbal's book is beautifully crafted. It models how one can write of such topics with care and intention without ever escaping or sensationalizing the horrors and evils faced by displaced peoples. In response to these manifold forms of dispossession, significant reforms are underway, including through common lawsuits, statutory reform, and proposed changes to legal doctrine. Casey develops the concept of aesthetic impropriety to identify shared structures of thought across legal and literary venues. She shows that writers of poetry and prose are also transforming harmful property laws: in Nigeria, Ben Okri and Chigozie Obioma have articulated symbiotic ecological relationships that are also evidenced in recent actions against petroleum companies; in India, Arundhati Roy's challenge to divorce laws has preempted similar attempts at reform in Parliament; in South Africa, Zoë Wicomb theorized protections for Indigenous modes of creative production nineteen years before they were signed into law; and in the Americas, M. In this short but intricate and dense work, Redfield investigates the “shibboleth”—the word, if it is one, and the concept—from its roots in the Book of Judges to the contemporary global regimes of technics that are defined by constantly proliferating technologies and practices of encryption, decryption, exclusion, and inclusion. At the heart of this book is an insightful interpretation of two poems by the Romanian-Jewish, German-language poet Paul Celan. Redfield places Celan into a polyphonic dialogue with others who invoked “the” shibboleth: the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, William Faulkner, and the Colombian visual artist Doris Salcedo (whose 2007 installation at the Tate Modern, which bears the title Shibboleth, provides the cover image for the book). In doing so, Redfield pursues the track of shibboleth: a word to which no language can properly lay claim, a word that is both less and more than a word, that signifies both the epitome and ruin of border control technology, and that thus, despite its violent origin and role in the Biblical story, offers a locus of poetico-political affirmation.
