Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Jonathan Butler to Conversations LIVE to discuss his book JOIN THE CONSPIRACY---and what he hopes readers take away from it.
In the shadow of recent turmoil, Join the Conspiracy: How a Brooklyn Eccentric Got Lost on the Right, Infiltrated the Left and Brought Down the Biggest Bombing Network in New York (Fordham University Press, 2024) transports readers to a pivotal moment of division and dissent in American history: the late 1960s. Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and a nation grappling with internal conflict, this compelling narrative follows the life of George Demmerle, a factory worker whose political odyssey encapsulates the era's tumultuous spirit. From his roots as a concerned citizen wary of his country's leftward tilt, Demmerle's journey takes a dramatic turn as he delves into the heart of radical activism. Participating in iconic protests from the March on Washington to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Demmerle's story is a whirlwind of political fervor, embodying the struggle against what was perceived as imperialist war and racial injustice. His transformation is marked by alliances with key figures of the time, including Abbie Hoffman and an eventual leadership role within an East Coast Black Panther affiliate. Yet, beneath his radical veneer lies a secret: Demmerle is an FBI informant. Join the Conspiracy reveals Demmerle's complex role in a society at war with itself, where his deepening involvement with the radical left and a bombing collective forces him to confront his loyalties. The narrative, enriched by a rare trove of period documents, candid photos taken from inside the radical movement, and underground art – more than a hundred of which are included in the book – not only charts Demmerle's saga but also reflects the broader story of a nation struggling to find its moral compass amidst chaos. As Demmerle navigates the dangerous waters of political extremism, readers are invited to ponder the price of ideology, the nature of loyalty, and the fine line between activism and betrayal. This book is not just a recounting of historical events but a vibrant portrait of a man and a movement that sought to reshape America. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Grammy-nominated jazz musician Jonathan Butler is the headliner for this Saturday's Harbor Park Jazz Rhythm & Blues Festival in Kenosha. He was born in South Africa in abject poverty at a time when Apartheid was in full effect - but managed to break through in an unprecedented way- becoming the first Black musician to have their work played on white radio. His music was an inspiration and comfort to Nelson Mandela during the last years of his imprisonment. After the interview, I play several of his songs in their entirety.

•Samuel Williams, Jr. Selah is a dynamic youth gospel choir with members ranging in ages 5- to 18-years-old. The ministry was formed (circa 2002) with the humble number of 6 members, under the vision to establish a choir at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago, IL, through which youth could share in the rich experience of leading worship and praise. Shortly after it's founding, Julie Welborn (then Youth Minister) approached Samuel Williams, Jr., an Alumnus of Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago, to help lead the fledgling choir. After accepting the position of Team Leader/Director of Selah, Sam realized that in order to have a choir that operated in excellence, he had to change the originally set rehearsal schedule from twice a month to every week. •Sam then recruited Jacinta Warnie, a Princeton Graduate, Former Director of the Princeton University Gospel Ensemble and Multiple Choir Alumna as a Co-Team Leader to support the group. Sam also extended the time of rehearsals from one hour to between one and one half to two hours weekly. With the coupling of consistent caring leadership, grounding in the Word of God, and disciplined rehearsals, the group began to grow in number, in vocal strength, and most importantly, spiritually. •Selah quickly began to be recognized across the city of Chicago for their strong vocals, dynamic energetic performances, joyous hearts and sweet spirits. Particularly in this perilous time when so much negative light is cast upon youth, Selah began to be infectious in a great and awesome way! They have performed and shared their ministry with artists and at venues including, but not limited to: • Chance the Rapper (Featured on Chance the Rapper's Twitter Site) • CSO (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) • Michelle Williams (Formerly of Destiny's Child) • Jennifer Hudson • Jazz Artists Dave Koz & Jonathan Butler and many others. •The Group is now 35-40 members strong and has released their first self-titled CD Project: Sam Williams & Selah St. Sabina Youth Choir of Chicago! •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. This week wraps up my chat with Jonathan Butler-Duplessis (Hamilton Broadway: Aaron Burr, George Washington, and Mulligan/Madison) and he's taking questions from The Patreon Peeps so we're all over the map. There's lots of pizza talk (obviously), Jonathan gives advice about being weird and authentic and finding your people, he talks about his fascination with the 2019 Cats movie, manifests his dream of playing Elphaba, and confesses how many times he's read that erotica book that's onstage at Hamilton. Plus! Jonathan explains why he sees his Broadway debut as Burr as a return on a lot of people's investments, and he does some deep introspection about relating to the frustration and ambition of Aaron Burr, a role Jonathan never thought he'd play because according to him, "no one is ever gonna let him LEAD a show." • S3E2. Queer Writes Session: Jonathan Butler with Dr Jared M Field In this episode Jono chats with Dr Jared M. Field, a Gamilaraay Guwaymadhaan mari from Moree way, where the red sand meets the black soil. Etta and the Shadow Taboo was published by Hardie Grant in June 2023 and was highly commended in the 2024 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards — Prize for Indigenous Writing. They chat about the collaborative experience of producing a picture book, Gamilaraay Kinship System research as featured on SBS's The First Inventors, Decolonising our ideas of gender and queerness, as well as excellent writing advice.
Jonathan Butler-Duplessis (Hamilton Broadway: Aaron Burr, George Washington, and Mulligan/Madison) is back for round two! In this episode, we kick off talking about his experience playing Jim Conley in Parade. It was a really intense audition process, Jonathan couldn't afford contacts for the first half of the run so could barely see and the audience looked like blobs, and he had to deal with several instances of the cops being called on him for existing while Black. But according to Jonathan, all of this craziness actually *helped* his performance. We also dive into his Hamilton story, which starts with the belief that he was wrong for absolutely every part in the show. Of course that wasn't the case because we eventually hear the story about how Jonathan was giving Lin-Manuel Miranda shit for eating Sicilian style pizza at the Richard Rodgers so things worked out pretty well! Side note: Jonathan takes his Chicago pizza very, very seriously. Jonathan also has an incredibly moving debut experience, and talks about what it was like to play Aaron Burr for the first time. He explains his connection to Wait For It and how he carries his past with him as he moves forward. /// Jonathan on Instagram Jade Armor The Plate Show Podcast /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps
Jonathan Butler-Duplessis is currently in the Broadway company of Hamilton covering Aaron Burr, George Washington, and Mulligan/Madison. Jonathan grew up in Chicago singing in church and got his first break thanks (in part) to his grandmother's babysitting gig. He did a lot of community theatre but by the time he graduated from high school, he stopped performing. After a quick (not great!) experience at a Christian bible college, Jonathan had the opportunity to audition for the University of Illinois and he took it. He worked hard, he wanted to learn, he used the tools they gave him, and he kicked off his prolific career. Jonathan has this No Shortcuts mantra and it's definitely the vibe of his three episodes. From professional wrestling, to a metaphysical discussion of Beyonce's Renaissance, to his love of small details, it all seems to come back to how all of these things effect his performance in Hamilton and everything else he does. /// Jonathan on Instagram Jade Armor The Plate Show Podcast /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps

Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who leads a life few can imagine. Born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty, Butler was the first non-white artist to be played on South African radio and appear on national television. Though his musical abilities would take him away from the world he grew up in, Jonathan would neither forget the plight of his fellow South Africans, nor the man that led them to freedom. It is for this reason Nelson Mandela credits Butler's music as having inspired him during his imprisonment. In more ways than one, Jonathan Butler is representative of South Africa. Jonathan's story begins at a very young age when his father presented him with a homemade one-string guitar. Little did his father realize that he was giving way to a musical phenomenon. From then on, Jonathan's musical gifts grew by leaps and bounds. In his early teens Butler won a local talent contest, affording him the opportunity to perform with a touring musical company throughout South Africa. On occasion he would perform at lavish concert halls for whites only, where he would not be allowed to use the bathroom, and the very next night he would perform in a dilapidated local township. Ultimately, his ticket to a new life was music. At thirteen, Jonathan's talents caught the eyes and ears of the British record producer Clive Caulder. He was signed to Caulder's Jive Records and the rest is history. Jonathan's first single broke down racial barriers becoming the first song by a black artist played by white radio stations in South Africa and won the South African equivalent to a GRAMMY®. His commitment to his craft came to fruition with his self-titled debut album, which received a GRAMMY® nomination for the pop hit “Lies.” An instrumental “Going Home” earned him another GRAMMY® nomination and the mid-tempo ballad “Sarah, Sarah” confirmed Butler's place in popular music. However, to Jonathan Butler, success is measured on a higher plane. A religious and spiritual man, Butler dedicates his life to being a devoted father and grandfather, and a caring citizen to his homeland, South Africa. And in spite of all the hardships, Jonathan Butler has an air of playfulness and quiet resilience that is easily visible in his passionate performances. In Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, a battle against environmental and climate injustice is underway. As an Oklahoma energy company sets its sights on the Gulf, Nick Alexandrov reports on concerns mounting over the potential harm inflicted on historically Black towns in the area. Partner Tulsa, a collaborative effort of civic leaders in the City of Tulsa, is spearheading revitalization plans for the Greenwood District. With projects like the Kirkpatrick Heights and Greenwood Master Plan, the aim is to honor the district's rich history while embracing future growth. Sondra Slade sits down with Partner Tulsa's Jonathan Butler to discuss it.For a long time, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been actively competing in sports leagues and tournaments, particularly in basketball and football. But the development of the HBCU Chess Classic marks a new era for the HBCU community. Jasmine Bivar-Tobie elaborates on this first-ever chess competition which promotes Black achievement in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math, or STEM fields, and was led by students and the first Black Chess Grandmaster, Maurice Ashley. If you've seen a cover of Vogue or GQ magazines, you may have seen Dillon Peña's work. Though he started out in a small town on Route 66, the Oklahoma native is now a renowned makeup artist and even created his own skincare line. Shonda Little speaks with him about his story. In the center of Tulsa's Greenwood District, where the echoes of history are still audible, Nuova Wright's literary work, "little wife: the story of gold," is more than a mere collection of eco poetry and memoir. Gabrielle Vickers reviews how this book gracefully interweaves the essence of Thoreau's "Walden" with Wright's personal story. With a strong sense of place as a foundation, the author carefully guides the reader through grief, resentment, and trauma that has been passed down from generation to generation.
