In this episode we talk about Bernie Madoff, the man behind the $64 billion dollar Ponzi Scheme– the largest financial crime in the history of the United States- happens to be long time associates with Fred Wilpon, the owner of the New York Mets baseball team. After Madoff was arrested in 2008, questions surrounding his role with Wilpon and the team's finances began to circulate. Using information from available media reports, we can get an idea of the extent to Bernie Madoff's ties to the New York Mets
That the Mets have won anything, given their leadership over the last 60 seasons, is amazing. The worst of that leadership rose to prominence 35 years ago this week, as minority owner Fred Wilpon purchased half of the club from The Doubleday Publishing Company. To go through all the nepotism and corruption requires a guide, so Mike and Bill turn to Howard Megdal, author of Wilpon's Folly: The Story of a Man, his Fortune, and the New York Mets. Plus, happy birthday to Randy Poffo and Mike Garcia!
If you haven’t heard the news already, Bernard Madoff has just passed away at the age of 82 in a federal prison hospital in Butner, North Carolina. For more than 50 years, Bernie Madoff was renowned on Wall Street as a big money manager who founded his own firm at age 22 and became non-executive chairman of the Nasdaq in 1990. Madoff was famously known for running the largest and possibly most devastating Ponzi scheme in financial history. He defrauded thousands of investors out of tens of billions of dollars over the course of about 17 years. Madoff was busted on December 11, 2008 after his two sons turned him in. Victims included director Steven Spielberg, actor Kevin Bacon, former New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon, Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Weisel, as well as ordinary investors like Burt Ross who lost $5 million in the scheme. In a 2013 email to CNBC from prison, Madoff mentioned that the break in the market that started the Great Recession led to his scam. “I thought this would be only a short-term trade which could be made up once the market became receptive. The rest is my tragic history of never being able to recover.” In today’s podcast, Phil and Danielle discuss Bernie Madoff and his scheme that led to the nation’s largest financial fraud in history, You can learn a lot from the history of financial figures and investors. Thanks Fred Wilpon due to you wanting to get $6M to Bernie Madoff you will be paying Bobby Bonilla $1.1 and change thru 2035 for a total of over $29M. Karma is a bitch. Thank you Ira Berkow for the article in the NYT and telling me that Rod Carew couldn't run in his neighborhood in the 1970's because he was stopped by cops too often. How things haven't changed.Messi 700 goals. Mazel tov.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alfredo-villasmil/message

The worst thing that could happen did when Fred Wilpon bought out Nelson Doubleday to become the primary share holder as owner of the Mets. He should have been forced to sell the team by Bud Selig because the money used was acquired through Bernie Madoff's ponzi scheme. As long as the Wilpon's are the owners we may never see another championship. Don't be surprised if Calloway hangs on because he is still owed money. The Wilpon's don't care about the team and constantly walk down the path of mediocrity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/james-burns52/support
Scott Soshnick, Michael Barr and Eben Novy-Williams discuss a host of issues related to the business of sports, including the status of the Ball family's Big Baller Brand. In the wake of allegations that a BBB part owner and friend of the family stole money from the company, Lakers guard Lonzo Ball covered up his Big Baller Brand tattoo. ESPN reported that Lonzo Ball severed ties with one the brand's founders, Alan Foster, over concerns that he had misappropriated $1.5 million of the player's money. Also talked about is Mets owner Fred Wilpon's decision to increase his stake in the baseball team by buying a limited stake that had been offered. The New York Post said Wilpon agreed to pay about $180 million for 12 percent of the club that had been held by Comcast and Charter Communications. That figure values the team at about $1.5 billion. Also discussed is lawyer Michael Avenatti's claim that Nike broke the law by paying high-school basketball players. Hosts: Scott Soshnick, Michael Barr and Eben Novy-Williams Producer: Madena Parwana
Willie Stargell/Credit: You Tube Mar. 26, 2019 turned out to be a busy day for the New York Mets, as we explore in my latest edition of The Baseball Beat. The Mets and pitcher Jacob deGrom have agreed to a contract extension and Mets owner Fred Wilpon is buying back more of his ballclub. The Boston Red Sox and catcher Sandy Leon were in the news and so are uniforms, as Sports Illustrated examines uniform changes for the coming season. You can read the article by clicking here. We also take a look back at my interview with Willie Stargell. At the time the former Pittsburgh Pirate was a member of the Atlanta Braves coaching staff. The Braves were in Richmond to play their AAA affiliate, when I caught up with Willie and hosted a press conference at which he was featured for being elected to the Hall of Fame. Enjoy!

September has rolled around, and though we cannot have playoffs specific meaningful games in September, that doesn't mean things can't get exciting. We at A Metsian Podcast will always continue to watch through and through every September, because there is never short of things to see and talk about. At 8:30 PM ET, Mike Lecolant and Rich Sparago will queue up the 19th episode of A Metsian Podcast with Sam, Rich & Mike. We will discuss the Mets West Coast trip and the successes on that round, as well as Noah Syndergaard‘s first career complete game. Jacob deGrom broke Dwight Gooden's major-league record with his 25th consecutive start of giving up three earned runs or less. Is there anything else we can say about the man? Of course there is. Zack Wheeler's ERA continues to go down. The rotation has been pretty darn good lately, hasn't it? It sounds like father and son Fred and Jeff are at odds about the type of GM we should have going forward. What would we like to see happen, now that we have that information out there? Who knows how true it is, but it's definitely something different we can talk about instead of our usual Wilpon's hateful bashing. And as always, we will look back in history at the Mets players to where number 19, as well as the 1919 New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, and New York Yankees. So, make sure you join us at 8:30 PM ET for the latest addition of A Metsian Podcast with Sam Rich & Mike!

The month of May has been very kind to the now 1st place Red Sox, and none of it has to do with luck. The Red Sox have pitched and hit spectacularly this month. They've transformed into a juggernaut that can beat other team in so many ways. Alex talks about the very successful road trip in Cleveland and Detroit. This past week was Carl Crawford's coming out party, and he's found a new place in the lineup! Alex also mentions John Lackey's rehab, and whether he thinks Lackey will be effective upon returning. In the "Around the League" segment, the AL East standings with the Red Sox at the top are discussed. Plus, Alex gives his two cents on Buster Posey's unfortunate season ending injury and on Tom Verducci's in-depth feature on Fred Wilpon that ran in Sports Illustrated last week. Post on the message boards (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards)! Happy Memorial Day!
Alex interviews Jonah Keri, author of The Extra 2%: How Wall Street Strategies Took A Major League Baseball Team From Worst To First. Alex and Jonah talk about the research that went into the book, and what Jonah found most intriguing about this current Tampa Bay front office. Plus, what was the most startling discovery about the previous regime? Alex asks Jonah about whether he thinks the Rays can sustain a competitive window, if the amateur draft accomplishes enough in terms of building parity, how a team builds a bullpen, whether baseball can stay in the St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay area, and more. In addition, Alex recaps the Red Sox's 3 games against Cleveland including a 14-2 throttling on Wednesday. Also, just how bad is the Daisuke injury and how bad is the disconnect between him and the organization? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings and criticizes Fred Wilpon for well...criticizing his three best players (though they do deserve it...but not to the extent that they received it). "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 3-5 PM EST on 1120 AM WBNW Boston, www.moneymattersradio.net, and www.livestream.com/wbnw1120.
