Joined today by Patrick Bringley, author of the memoir "All The Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me". Patrick and I talk about him moving from Chicago to New York, switching allegiances from the White Sox to the Mets, and the behind the scenes work that a radio play by play guy does. Patrick tells us about working for the New Yorker and why his brother's illness and tragic passing led to his departure and finding work as a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We chat about when Patrick decided to write this book, when he knew he had a hit and what he did when he saw someone buying his book. Patrick shares writing this different type of book where he opened up as a the narrator and still talked about the fascinating pieces of art at the Met. We discuss past thefts in the museum, the similarities of the MET guards to police officers, the secret tunnels under the museum and how he made the time pass. Ten years as a security guard, Patrick talks about what changed over that time, how he changed and when he knew it was time to retire. We go over his favorite pieces of art, the mistakes the curators make and the most annoying types of visitors. We hear about celebrities' that have been in the MET (not for the gala), what he's up to now, and how he snagged Jeff Wilpon's phone number.  All this and more Check out Patrick's IG here: https://www.instagram.com/patrickbringley/ His website: https://www.patrickbringley.com/

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin by discussing Steve Cohen’s impending approval by MLB owners and how Bill de Blasio is grandstanding over a technicality. We also referenced a piece that appeared in The New Yorker about Cohen’s company’s financial past and talked about Jeff Wilpon’s final Zoom call with his employees. Next, we have little sympathy for MLB owners crying poor, although ratings of the World Series have been down this season, despite compelling postseason storylines—Randy Arozarena, Clayton Kershaw, a wild Game 4 ending, and more. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.  You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. Today's word of the day is 'sampson' as in misspelling my name as in Brody's as in how the New York Mets misspelled Brodie Van Wagenen's name in a press release last night. Why was a press release warranted? Well, Brodie got caught on a live mic talking poorly about MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and owner Jeff Wilpon. What a disaster. How as this leaked? IT WASN'T! The Mets 'accidentally' posted the feed onto the team's website. Woof (0:06). The NBA continues to get things right. Regardless of what your view is on them, just listen to me here. Games will be played on Saturday. After two days of protest. After countless meetings. After getting tangible action items listed. Let's hope change soon comes. But something happened in one of those meetings that needs to be talked about. Patrick Beverley said something so disrespectful to union boss Michelle Roberts that Chris Paul, Udonis Haslem, and other players had to put him in check. Wow (16:55). Review - Lean on Pete (28:20). For the first time in NPDS history - we have the best statement released of all time by a team... the Baltimore Ravens (32:55). So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me if I think that the owner of the Real Salt Lake MLS team should be forced to sell his team after his most recent comments about players protesting (38:30). #waittosee --------------------------- 'Nothing Personal with David Samson' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Castbox, Bullhorn and wherever else you listen to podcasts.   Follow David on Twitter: @DavidPSamson  To watch David on CBS Sports HQ visit https://www.cbssports.com/live/ To hear more from the CBS Sports Podcast Network, visit https://www.cbssports.com/podcasts/ https://www.youtube.com/nothingpersonalwithdavidsamson Learn more about your ad choices. The Mets have their first winning streak of the year and are just 2 games away from .500 on the season, but, on the verge of a sweep and with the Yankees banging down our door for this weekend, Corona has reared its ugly head. Who's got the rona? Your guess is as good as ours, but this team was sick long before their trip to Miami and the only cure is Steve Cohen. Conforto, Dom and Guillorme have been revelations thus far, however the bullpen continues to look shaky and with Lugo being plucked from the pen and reinserted into the rotation, can the team really hold up down the stretch? Sven Matz ain't the guy whether he's starting or relieving and Diaz can try to fool us all he wants. There's no one that we truly feel comfortable with in a tight spot other than the Quarterican and now he's gone. The only thing that we can truly focus on at this moment is our savior, uncle Stevie. After news broke that Jeff Wilpon hates Cohen's guts and that the ARod group was the favorite to win the bid, KFC and Clem weren't in the highest of spirits. They felt robbed of true happiness and were looking down the barrel of decades more mediocrity, that is, until it was revealed that not even ARod's people think he has a shot if uncle Stevie really wants this thing and BOY DOES HE. As a lifelong suffering Mets fan himself, Stevie told the people loud and clear that he's focused on winning and putting everything he's got behind it. Music to our ears and (soon to be) money in our payroll! Can we make the playoffs? Maybe. Are we going on hiatus now that the team is as hot as ever? Possibly. Will Uncle Stevie save us all? WE GOTTA BELIEVE.

The Washington football team hired the first black team president, Alex Smith is cleared for football activities but can't use his foot and cow farts could save the environment as well as some video game talks. We also discuss the best chicken sandwiches and Deion Sanders joining barstool. The Mets had the most Mets weekend as Jacob Degrom misses his start and the rest of the team doesn't show up to get swept by the Phillies. Jeff Wilpon doesn't like Steve Cohen so it's going screw up the future of the franchise. The Nets made the playoffs but don't have much of a chance and then we talk about the track the Knicks are on. Finally, we get to the Islanders dominance of the Caps and their chance to sweep on Tuesday. Our top 5 this week is our favorite Leo DiCaprio movies. We’re right back where we started in December and boy does it feel great! It’s not that we don’t like the J-Rod group, it’s just that we know how much better life would be with uncle Stevie. Not only will he outbid any competition that dares show their face, but he will still have BILLIONS left over to make this team into a contender. There's legitimately no downside to this sale, unless of course you're that rat bastard, Jeff Wilpon. How mad do you have to be at someone to give away hundreds of millions of dollars? According to the New York Post, very mad. Sources are saying Stevie has got to come in at least $200 million higher than the next closest bidder, otherwise Jeff is selling to them. This silver-spooned scumbag has already cost his daddy and poor Saul Katz once, there's no way they let him do it again right? RIGHT!? Our only other hope is that the rest of the league's ownership steps in to force these clowns to take the max offer. Clem comes up with worst case scenarios for how they could still manage to blow this, KFC makes his pitch to uncle Stevie for his "services" and a new war may be brewing between the Red Sox and Mets' faithful. We don't know when the sale will ultimately happen, but we gotta believe that we'll be parading down the canyon of champions the second it does.

Cuncel the acquisition and Cuncel the Cohen. According to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the deal is dead. We went from our highest of highs to lowest of lows and it's all thanks to that slimy weasel, Jeff Wilpon.  Sources say that at the last minute, Jeff asked to extend his 5-years of team control, wanted (basically) a life-time job in senior management, demanded a raise as COO and requested use of the team's private jet. You can't make this shit up.What else can we say besides this is exactly what we have come to expect from the silver-spooned Wilpon. The guy has been handed everything his entire life and on the one-yard line- staring down a $2.6 BILLION deal, he just couldn't let go.Well folks, Stevie Cohen don't play that. He told little Wilpon to kick rocks and has left our team and our hearts in shambles. When news first broke of the sale we praised Tiki for dropping the bomb, but now it looks as if he jumped the gun. Jeff's ego just couldn't stand people thinking that he got raked over the coals. He couldn't stand Mets fans naming Cohen "the savior" of the franchise and he responded by doing what he does best, ruining our lives. So we are back in the pit of misery, looking for any lifeline we can grab a hold of. As long as the Wilpon's are the owners we may never see another championship. Don't be surprised if Calloway hangs on because he is still owed money. The Wilpon's don't care about the team and constantly walk down the path of mediocrity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/james-burns52/support

8-9-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens up this brief filibuster with a little historical perspective about the history of the New York Mets franchise. As awful as the bad is, the franchise has a history of great runs in August and September. Any questions, refer to the seasons of 1969, 1973, 2015, and 2016. The perception exists that the Mets owners, Fred and Jeff Wilpon, are cheap. While they operate the team more like a business than one would like, John does not necessarily agree with the perception. Oakland Raiders Wide Receiver Antonio Brown thinks he is more powerful than the National Football League. The league will continue to prosper long after he is gone. If the NFL was smart, they would call his bluff and see if he has the balls to quit the sport that has given him his livelihood.

9-13-2018 Passed Ball Show- John starts the show by calling into the question the decision to have a press conference just to announce when David Wright is playing again. Obviously, there is more to this- likely the announcement that Wright will either be retiring or not playing anymore after this season. If not, what is the need to have COO Jeff Wilpon and assistant GM John Ricco at the same presser. Khris Davis will almost certainly not be playing for the Oakland Athletics after the 2019 season when he is eligible to become a free agent and may even be traded this off season. This has more to do with precedence than anything else and is (and will be) clearly money-driven. Davis, an AL MVP candidate this season and a huge reason the Athletics are headed to an unexpected playoff season, fits the build of a reasonably paid player who is exceeding the worth of his contract ($10.5 million in 2018). Rather than pay him what he deserves, the Athletics would rather either trade him or simply not retain him once his contract runs out after the 2019 season. Finally, defensive pro football players should not be expected to be nice people. For years, since the days of Buddy Ryan, defensive players have been taught to be ferocious, tenacious, and have little regard for the safety of offensive players, particularly the quarterback. And we expect them to be nice guys? The days of the conventional defensive player becoming the best of all time are likely over for that reason. Players that play with that regard today would likely be suspended and eventually blackballed.

We will discuss the Mets West Coast trip and the successes on that round, as well as Noah Syndergaard‘s first career complete game.  Jacob deGrom broke Dwight Gooden's major-league record with his 25th consecutive start of giving up three earned runs or less. Is there anything else we can say about the man? Of course there is.  Zack Wheeler's ERA continues to go down.  The rotation has been pretty darn good lately, hasn't it?  It sounds like father and son Fred and Jeff are at odds about the type of GM we should have going forward. What would we like to see happen, now that we have that information out there? Who knows how true it is, but it's definitely something different we can talk about instead of our usual Wilpon's hateful bashing. And as always, we will look back in history at the Mets players to where number 19, as well as the 1919 New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, and New York Yankees.
