Carlos Mendoza praised the Mets' trade deadline additions, highlighting bullpen upgrades Ryan Helsley and Taylor Rogers along with new center fielder Cedric Mullins. Mendoza emphasized Mullins' speed, defensive instincts, and baseball IQ, noting that his value extends beyond the box score. He addressed how Mullins' arrival shifts playing time for Jeff McNeil, Tyrone Taylor, and the younger infielders, while stressing that versatility and competition will remain key. Mendoza confirmed Edwin Díaz remains the closer but Helsley will pitch in high-leverage spots. He also outlined bullpen flexibility, with Garcia and Garrett available for multi-inning work. Injury updates included Francisco Alvarez being cleared to return and Soto ready to play. Taylor Rogers reflected on leaving San Francisco after 13 years and adjusting to his first midseason trade, stressing that he aims to fit into a strong bullpen without overcomplicating his role. Helsley expressed excitement to join a contender, praising the Mets' depth and confirming he's ready to pitch in any inning. Mullins said he's eager to bring speed, defense, and balanced offense, crediting adjustments in his approach this season for improved production against left-handed pitching. We break down the blockbuster acquisition of Cedric Mullins from the Orioles, plus the Mets' aggressive bullpen makeover with All‑Star relievers Ryan Helsley, Tyler Rogers & Gregory Soto. David Stearns discussed the Mets' trade deadline moves, highlighted by the acquisition of Cedric Mullins to bolster defense, baserunning, and lineup balance. He explained the decision to prioritize bullpen upgrades, landing Taylor Rogers and Ryan Helsley, while keeping top prospects in the system. Stearns outlined how the roster mix will work with Jeff McNeil, Ronny Mauricio, Brett Baty, and other young infielders sharing time. He emphasized flexibility over reacting to other contenders' moves, valued recent player development progress, and explained the rationale for trading prospects like Drew Gilbert and Blade Tidwell in win-now deals. Injury updates were provided on Jesse Winker and José Siri, with Winker unlikely to return before September. Stearns reiterated his belief in sustained competitiveness rather than a short “window” and acknowledged the challenge of balancing development with competing for a playoff spot. In a fiery monologue, Brandon Tierney passionately argues that the New York Mets' primary need at the trade deadline is a significant offensive upgrade, specifically a "real bat" for center field or third base, rather than the conventional focus on acquiring more bullpen arms. He challenges the notion that the Mets should prioritize relief pitching, suggesting they have enough internal options and a strong starting rotation. Tierney believes Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns should make an aggressive, unconventional move for a hitter, even if it means sacrificing a top prospect or taking on significant salary. He emphasizes that relying on players like Jeff McNeil in center field in October is a recipe for disaster and that a bold move for a bat is essential for a legitimate World Series push.
Carlos Mendoza addressed Starling Marte's return to the roster and explained how the team will ease him back into playing time, primarily using him at DH with limited outfield duty. He confirmed Marte's knee is feeling better post-injection. Mendoza also discussed Brandon Waddell's injury timeline after his prior fall on the mound, addressed Jeff McNeil's increased center field reps, and spoke about the infield combinations involving Ronny Mauricio and Brett Baty. He gave updates on Francisco Lindor's recent struggles and health, commented on Tyrone Taylor's role, and answered a Spanish-language question about Marte's significance to the team's identity. Carlos Mendoza and David Stearns detailed Francisco Alvarez's return to the majors after a productive and attitude-resetting stint in Triple-A. Mendoza praised Alvarez's defensive improvement, engagement, and maturity in handling adversity, while confirming he'll get regular playing time moving forward. Stearns highlighted Alvarez's rapid progression, both offensively and behind the plate, saying his return was based on readiness, not desperation. They also touched on the fluidity of the trade deadline landscape, bullpen injuries, and internal development paths for prospects. Stearns confirmed bullpen help is the priority but left open the possibility of offensive upgrades, with center field mentioned as a position of lesser concern due to recent improvements from Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor. The Mets took home a high drama back and forth Subway Series opener and after the game Manager Carlos Mendoza met with the media to breakdown a game where Jeff McNeil played hero a few times along with a strong performance from his Reed Garrett and the rest of the bullpen.
Mets Second Baseman Jeff McNeil not only hit the game winning home run but he also made a diving stop in the top of the 9th inning that ultimately kept Aaron Judge in the on-deck circle and after the game he met with the media to not only give his feelings on his play but the game as a whole.
BT and Sal dissect the New York Mets' recent struggles, questioning if their current rough patch is merely a blip or indicative of deeper issues, particularly concerning team chemistry. While acknowledging the significant injuries plaguing the pitching staff and overworked bullpen, Sal introduces the provocative theory that Juan Soto's arrival and unique, individualistic approach, despite his outstanding personal performance, might be subtly impacting the team's cohesion. They ponder if Soto's reserved nature, coupled with his massive contract in contrast to other players, is creating an unconscious dynamic that contributes to the Mets' perceived lack of fight and energy, suggesting potential trades like Jeff McNeil to inject more vigor into the clubhouse.
In the second hour of the show, BT and Sal dissect the Mets' alarming tailspin, debating whether their woes are simply due to injuries or a deeper issue of team chemistry, particularly with the arrival of Juan Soto despite his stellar individual play. They also touch upon the Yankees' struggles, but focus more on the Mets' need for a "big trade" to inject new energy and stabilize the team, suggesting names like Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo as potential trade candidates to shake up the clubhouse dynamics and turn their season around.
Today's BT & Sal show kicked off with a fiery denunciation of the Yankees' all-around poor play, with Sal advocating for immediate repercussions like benching Anthony Volpe and cutting Mark Leiter to jolt the team into accountability. The conversation then shifted to the Mets' recent struggles, with Sal provocatively suggesting that Juan Soto's individualistic nature, despite his stellar performance, might be subtly affecting team chemistry, leading to calls for strategic trades like Jeff McNeil. In the final hour, the hosts dove into the breaking news of Mike Brown's expected hiring as the Knicks' head coach, with Sal expressing skepticism about the "retread" hire's ability to lead the team to a championship, contrasting with BT's more optimistic view on the new coach and the team's improved roster.
The New York Mets return home battered and bewildered after one of the ugliest stretches in franchise history. They've lost 15 of their last 18 games and just endured a humiliating sweep in Pittsburgh, where they were outscored 30-4 across three games—including a 12-1 blowout the day after a players-only meeting. It's July 1st—Bobby Bonilla Day—when the Mets famously cut that $1.19 million check yet again, symbolizing a franchise haunted by past decisions while the present crumbles around them. As the Mets open a critical 6-game homestand—three against the surging Milwaukee Brewers and three against the rival Yankees—questions abound. Has the team tuned out Carlos Mendoza? Will David Stearns pull the plug and become a deadline seller? Can the rotation rebound after getting lit up in Pittsburgh? And is there any hope left for this season? We'll dig deep into: Fallout from the Pirates sweep and what the players-only meeting achieved (if anything) Why Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Jeff McNeil are under the microscope The rotation woes and overworkBullpen How the Brewers and Yankees match up—and why this homestand could define the Mets' season A moment to reflect on Bobby Bonilla Day: the gift that keeps on giving Plus, updates from around MLB and what the latest rumors mean for the Mets' trade deadline plans. All this and more on today's episode!
Hour 1 We started the show with the NBA draft which was last night and how the Knicks still don't have a head coach. They better have one soon as we head into free agency. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the NBA draft. ESPN announced that Portland drafted ‘Colin Cowherd' and also misidentified Cooper Flagg twice. Boomer asked if there was Buzz, or No Buzz, with the Nets. The Mets finally beat the Braves as Juan Soto hit 2 HRs. Jerry just called Jazz Chisholm ‘Jizzm'. In the final segment of the hour, Sydney Esiason says farewell to ‘WAG Life' now that Matt Martin has retired. Hour 2 Reports indicate NFL owners colluded in 2022 to limit player guarantees, using emails about Kyler Murray and Justin Herbert, a fact the NFLPA allegedly withheld from players. In sports, the Yankees beat the Reds (Dominguez 4-for-5), and the Mets topped the Braves with Jeff McNeil's great catch and Juan Soto's two homers. Cooper Flagg was the NBA's top draft pick. Other topics included an impaled lifeguard, George Kittle on the Vasper bike, and a humorous anecdote about former colleague Mark Chernoff. The "Moment of the Day" was an NBA trade involving Jeanie Buss's panties. The show ended discussing the Knicks' coaching search and their urgent championship window.
The Yankees beat the Reds as Dominguez went 4-for-5. The Mets beat the Braves and Jeff McNeil made a great play in center, stealing a HR. Juan Soto hit 2 homers. Boomer and Gio's planned boat day was thwarted by bad weather, leading them to consider golf instead. A caller deemed Derek Jeter the most "boring" athlete to interview. Before Jerry's final update, Boomer shared his new green drink from Chris Wragge's wife. Jerry then played audio of Jazz Chisholm's mic'd-up error. In sports, Aaron Judge hit two homers in a Yankees loss, while Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso each hit two as the Mets swept the Rockies. Listeners speculated the Knicks' success might be due to James Dolan's focus on The Sphere, while others called in about the Mets' strong start. Boomer, and several callers, questioned the seemingly endless supply of cows and chickens for food. Jerry then reported on the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox, despite two homers from Aaron Judge, and the Mets' sweep of the Rockies, featuring two home runs each from Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil. The segment concluded with discussions about Aaron Rodgers seemingly being the Steelers' third-choice and Jaxson Dart's slim chances of playing this year, alongside more calls about American burger consumption.

This silence, he reasoned, allows for rampant speculation, aligning with the Knicks' history of firing coaches still under contract. Jerry then updated the sports news: Boston hit five homers to beat the Yankees, despite two from Aaron Judge; Pete Alonso's two home runs helped the Mets sweep the Rockies, pushing him past David Wright on the Mets' all-time list; and the Thunder evened their series with the Pacers at 1-1.
