The 1969 season is underway, and the Minnesota Twins' Rod Carew is already raking up the hits. After seven games, he's posting .388. That form will continue through the rest of the year, his eventual .322 winning him the AL Batting Trophy for the first of seven times—enough for the title to carry his name from 2016. If you want another 1969 stat, Carew steals home seven times (just one short of Ty Cobb's record of eight).Carew's career record notably contains 15 consecutive seasons batting over .300, starting in 1969; seven 5-hit games; and an overall .328, and elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991. As for legendary status, how about becoming only the 16th player in baseball history to reach 3000 hits? For today's game, we're early in the season, though, and the 6-6 California Angels are visiting the 7-4 Twins at Metropolitan Stadium. Monte Moore & Al Helfer take you through the game. You can find the boxscore here:https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN196904210.shtml.This game was played on April 21, 1969.

How to Master Your Emotions and Build Massive Resilience! What's the secret to staying calm, focused, and resilient in the face of life's challenges? In this episode, I'm bringing together some of the most profound minds in personal growth and emotional mastery to answer that very question. This mashup features insights from Rod Carew, Dr. Susan David, JP Sears, and Thais Gibson—each offering transformative strategies to help you take control of your emotional life and become unshakable. Rod Carew, a baseball legend, shares how he maintained emotional stability throughout a long and demanding career. He explains how developing "the sixth tool"—mastering his mindset—enabled him to perform under pressure and stay positive no matter the outcome. His wisdom on small adjustments and staying mentally strong is a game-changer for anyone striving to overcome slumps in business or life. Dr. Susan David, author of Emotional Agility, explores how our emotions serve as signposts to the things we value most. She challenges the myth of "positive thinking" and reveals why it's crucial to sit with difficult emotions to find deeper meaning and strength. Her groundbreaking strategies will teach you to embrace your emotions as tools for growth, not as barriers. JP Sears brings his signature blend of humor and vulnerability to tackle the dangers of emotional numbness. He dives into how masking our feelings with humor or avoidance keeps us disconnected from our true selves. His approach to reclaiming emotional authenticity is both raw and inspiring, showing how vulnerability can lead to a more joyful and purposeful life. Thais Gibson rounds out the conversation with actionable insights into how beliefs and emotions drive our actions. She highlights the link between core beliefs and patterns of behavior, offering strategies to reprogram limiting beliefs and regain control over your choices. Key Takeaways: - The Power of Emotional Control: Learn how to manage your emotions under pressure, as Rod Carew did, and turn small wins into unstoppable momentum. - Embrace All Emotions: Dr. Susan David explains why all emotions—even the uncomfortable ones—are essential teachers for living a meaningful life. - Reclaim Authenticity: JP Sears shares how accepting vulnerability helps you experience the full spectrum of life's highs and lows. - Rewire Limiting Beliefs: Thais Gibson demonstrates how changing your core beliefs can transform your emotional and behavioral patterns. This episode is packed with wisdom to help you navigate life's challenges with grace, strength, and resilience. Whether you're striving for peak performance, deeper self-awareness, or emotional freedom, this mashup has the tools to get you there.

Babe Ruth changed the sporting culture in America when he went to New York and blasted his way into the record books. But what is it about the Sultan of Swat that we don't know about? Stephen Lang attempted to answer some of those questions about who the Babe was when he didn't have a bat in his hand in his portrayal of the legendary slugger in a TV movie in 1991 called... Babe Ruth. The versatile actor has no limits starring in theatre, movies and TV and although Lang may be most known for his roles in Avatar, Tombstone, Gods and Generals, and Gettysburg, both Ruth's daughter and granddaughter say Lang's portrayal of the American icon is a Home Run. We'll talk with him about how he got the role, how Rod Carew helped him get the swing down, what it was like to share the screen with Pete Rose and why this was the most physically grueling role of his career. This is a great episode for anyone who wants to elevate their performance. What You'll Learn What is “commitment management” and how can we benefit from it? How do we leverage the “double-header of life” concept? What we can learn from the best hitters in baseball history What does it mean to “play big” in life? How can we improve our mental mechanics? What is the “tapping method” and how does it work?  About my Guest Dr. Tom Hanson frees athletes and coaches, executives and work teams to consistently perform at or near their best.  His Performance Freedom and Confidence and Consistency coaching programs in both sport and business train people to “Excel, Enjoy, and Evolve.” Formerly the Director of Performance Enhancement for the New York Yankees, Dr. Hanson also consulted with the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, and Minnesota Twins organizations.  He helps individuals and teams in all sports and regularly coaches in major university athletic programs such as Harvard University Baseball and Florida State Softball.  His business client list ranges from giants like Microsoft, Verizon and Pepperidge Farm to small businesses like Public Trust Advisors and insurance adjusters Johns Eastern. At the game I sat next to a true Twins fan named Alex who gave me the lowdown on various players and yelled the right things — “Looked good to me!” at the ump who'd called a strike a ball and “Good eye!” at a Twin who let Ball 3 go by and “Throw him the meatball!” at the opposition pitcher who had an 0-2 count on a Twins batter. It was a big pleasure, the proximity to genuine fandom. I'm old and out of touch. I paid $45 for a Twins cap: in my mind, it should've been $5. The Kramarczuk's bratwurst stand doesn't take cash, only credit cards. I don't get it. What country is this? But I bought one, with kraut and mustard, and it was good as ever. I'm not used to the raucous music blaring every half-inning though it thrilled the row of girls ahead of us who stood up, hips shaking, arms waving. I come from the era of intense silence. I may be the only person in the ballpark who remembers the fall day in 1969 when Rod Carew got on base with a double, took a big lead, stole third, and the fans sat transfixed in silence, knowing he might do it, wishing he'd do it, praying, and then he did it — he took a daring lead off third and dashed home and slid under the tag and we jumped up and yelled, “YES!” We didn't need the Stones' “Jumpin' Jack Flash” to rouse us, the feat of stealing home was enough. I can still see it in my mind, his perfect timing, the headlong slide. This is a public episode. He is then signed by the California Angels, before the 1978 campaign, for the largest contract in American team sports at the time. 1979 ALCS Game One - 10/3/79 - Memorial Stadium - Baltimore, Maryland California Angels For the first time in their 19 year history, the California Angels (88 - 74) are in the playoffs! The trade for former MVP and seven time batting champ Rod Carew has paid off immediately. The Angels have the league's top offense, lead by an MVP performance by Don Baylor (.296/.371/.530 36 HR 139 RBI 145 OPS+) and bolstered by bounce back All-Star seasons from 2B Bobby Grich (.294/.365/.537 30 HR 101 RBI 145 OPS+) and C Brian Downing (.326/.418/.482 12 HR 75 RBI 142 OPS+). Nolan Ryan, Dave Frost, and Frank Tanana hold down the rotation, and rookie righty Mark Clear is the lone star out of the pen. Former All Star shortstop Jim Fregosi (who was famously traded for his star righty Ryan earlier this decade) is at the helm for California, in just his first full season as a manager. This feel-good team, these "Yes We Can" Angels have a tall task ahead of them in their first ever postseason series. Baltimore Orioles Pitching, defense, and three-run homers. That's how Earl Weaver's Orioles (102 - 57) get it done. This season marks the sixth American League East crown since '69 for Baltimore, and while the lineups and rotations have changed, their style of play has not. Sure, Jim Palmer, Mark Belanger, and Al Bumbry are still there, but gone are the Robinsons (Brooks and Frank), Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar, just to name a few. The rotation is strong once again, led by Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan, as well as Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez. The bullpen is reliable, with Don Stanhouse and Tippy Martinez always on call. And the lineup is dangerous, with stars Eddie Murray (.295/.369/.475 25 HR 99 RBI 130 OPS+) and Ken Singleton (.295/.405/.533 35 HR 111 RBI 155 OPS+) packing plenty of punch in the heart of the order. The role players always shine under Weaver, with Gary Roenicke, Pat Kelly, and utility-man John Lowenstein providing timely hits time and again. Game one of this series is a matchup of legends: Jim Palmer (10 - 6 3.30 ERA 155 IP) vs. Nolan Ryan (16 - 14 3.60 ERA 222 IP). Both have struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year; however, they will bring their best in the playoffs and keep their teams in it. Neither will factor in the decision, as this tight ballgame will go into extra innings. From there, an unexpected hero will shine. Tune in for a thrilling start to the 1979 postseason! We start the podcast talking about Carlos Correa and his finally-ending saga. But then we dive into a team that we didn't know all that much about until we went through the archives. After the Dodgers and Giants moved to California following the 1957 season it was only 4 years later that the Los Angeles Angels began playing as an expansion team in the American League. They were actually co-tenants with the Dodgers in the new Chavez Ravine stadium which opened in 1962. With only one World Series title in their history the Angels have suffered more than most teams. The awful playoff loss to the Red Sox in 1986 was one of the most difficult series losses of all time. But the Angels have had stars!  And HOFers passed through like Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, and even a late -career Reggie Jackson.  Mike Trout is a lock to be a HOFer as an Angel.  Vlad Guerrero Sr. is the only player to wear an Angel cap when inducted (and we think he was better as an Expo).  Gordon thinks Shohei Ohtani has a really good chance.  Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening! With the speed and power of a world class athlete, and a million dollar smile that could eclipse the sun, Kirby Puckett quickly established himself as one of the legends in Minnesota history, taking his place in the pantheon of Twins heroes like Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Rod Carew. His clutch skills on the diamond, made him one of the best all around players in the game, until glaucoma robbed him of his career and set the lovable player on a dark path.

On this episode, Ben sits down with the winner of 16 Sports Emmy Awards and seven Edward R. Murrow Awards, FOX Sports journalist Tom Rinaldi to discuss his brand new podcast, Wesley, the story of the life and tragic death of former Major League Baseball player Lyman Wesley Bostock Jr. Rinaldi breaks down his research and the compelling story of Wesley, the only player in MLB history to be murdered mid-season, and breaks down how he left a lasting impact on the game, so much that greats such as George Brett and Rod Carew still feel greatly affected by his death. Ben and Tom discuss the current state of sports media and gambling's new impact on the sports world. Later, Ben shares why he believes President Biden may be at a tipping point, as even mainstream outlets are now aggressively questioning the president's effectiveness, and weighs in on who he believes may actually decide who the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee will be. To his family, he was simply “Wesley.” But to all in Major League Baseball, Lyman Wesley Bostock Jr. was a master with a bat. A career .311 hitter, greats of the game like George Brett and Rod Carew believed Bostock had the potential for 3,000 hits, and a possible Hall Of Fame career.  Long before signing a massive contract with the Angels, Lyman was born the son of a Negro Leagues player. Father and son had little contact in the boy's childhood. Bostock would later say, “My father helped teach Willie [Mays] but never taught me.” A star high school player in Los Angeles, Bostock almost never played college baseball. He arrived on campus during the tumult of the late 1960s, a period similar to the early 2020s. For Bostock, the fight for equality and social justice, was more important than baseball. “The cause” almost cost him his career.
