New Zealand rock outfit Shihad sound younger and fresher on their upcoming album Old Gods, much more so than a band who have been around for just over three decades should!Shihad have continuously churned out the hits, with songs like My Mind's Sedate, Home Again, Pacifier and Bitter reaching another level on the live circuit which is where Shihad surpassed many over their contemporaries with each outing.2014's FVEY saw Shihad reclaim their heavier edge, with vocalist Jon Toogood venting his anger at world issues into a seething mass of venom that many claim to be Shihad's finest – even more than The General Electric. After a seven year absence, Shihad return on August 27 with Old Gods, another electrifying collection of sweat stained rock that proves Kiwi's can get better with age.Bass player Karl Kippenberger joined HEAVY to chat about the album and where the hell they have been for seven years."The last record we released was in 2015,” he offered, “so we kind of sporadically got together and jammed over those six, seven years before hand monthly in Melbourne and we picked the sonic bits that we liked. When we finally got in touch with Adam Spark from Birds Of Tokyo we narrowed down those sonic songs and Jonny started working on vocals. It took a long time to jam and get together but pretty much once we hit the end of last year we moved it up a notch."The gap between albums is actually the longest period of time between releases in Shihad's 31 year history, a fact Kippenberger doesn't even try to defend."It feels like a long time too,” he agreed. “It's funny because I guess half of us ended up having families and a lot's happened in our personal lives over the last seven years but we just together and played shows and jammed and recorded stuff. Yeah, it's not really... I don't know why it took so long really (laughs)."In the full interview Karl goes into Old Gods in greater depth, the subject matter of the lyrics, Jon's vocal performance, still managing to rock after 30 plus years, their upcoming Australian tour, their commitment to rocking out on stage and more.

Many large political promises were made by the Trudeau Liberals during the 2015 campaign. Some of them have been ejected appearing to have never been a serious offer, while others have already been implemented with mostly positive results. When they were the #3 party in the House, the Liberals supported Harper's national security overkill called C-51 - The Anti-Terrorism Act 2015. The caveat was if elected to govern, C-51's "problematic elements" would be remedied. Two years later that so-called remedy is working its way through the process. Bill C-59 - An Act Respecting National Security Matters is that attempted fix. Within seven main parts of the proposed legislation there are three new Acts and changes to five existing Acts. Part 1 creates the National Security & Intelligence Review Committee, something very long overdue in any form in Canada. Part 2 creates the Intelligence Commissioner. Part 3 enshrines an official seperate entity of the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) away from the Ministry of Defense. Part 4 revises and alters powers granted to CSIS under C-51. Part 5 addresses the information sharing free-for-all in the government. Part 6 does little to clarify the No-Fly list issues C-51 brought. Part 7 changes the Criminal Code definitions, charges and penalties as necessary.  All in 150 extremely legalese pages. The International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group has been at the forefront explaining, presenting and warning as necessary about all things Charter related to Canadians since the aftermath of 9/11. Tim McSorley, national co-ordinator for ICLMG returns to The View Up Here to explain Bill C-59. What it does, what it doesn't, what it fixes, what it hurts. If you want to hang in FVEY, you have to meet the minimums for better or worse.

GRP 60-Episode 60 of the Global Recon Podcast I thought it would be a great way to kick off the new year by having Wes Kennedy back on the show. Wes is a former Canadian Special Operations Regiment(CSOR) operator. Wes is a combat veteran and since leaving the military has become an expert in fitness, nutrition, and mindset. Wes owns and operates a successful company whose main focus is to help people from the Five Eyes(FVEY) community pass special operations selection. FVEY consist of the Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. We often received emails and messages on social media asking for any resources that can help someone pass a selection. Well, there is no better place than the services provided by Wes and his company. Below is an excerpt from the podcast. John: You spent your time serving first as an engineer, then special operations, and now you've left the military. When you first started your company you were focused on a few different avenues of fitness and health. Now you guys focus more on special operations selection. You have the physical aspect, but you also have the mental aspect. I know this is something you specialize in. Can we talk about that? Wes Kennedy: What I've learned over the past several years with hundreds of guys training for various special ops selections around the world is the programming. Spent a lot of time learning how to do nutrition. It's almost the fluff of the training. It's fairly easy to deliver good individualized program design, good individualized nutrition. There are few guys that take it on and do it without question. Hit it day in and day out. What happens with most of us being the human beings that we are is eventually guys hit a crossroad. They said they're going to do something and they don't do it. I've begun to create a series of modules and training for that mindset piece to understand where they're behavioral patterns come from. The first module we cover in the mindset piece we cover is a purpose. A man without purpose is lost in the wind. Purpose to me is essentially what do I need to do before I die? and what do I need to do before I die? Jon Toogood is a songwriter and musician. Jon is the lead singer and guitarist in a band named Shihad. Formed in Wellington, New Zealand, the band are well-known among Australians following the success of their breakthrough album, The General Electric, in 1999. Jon and his bandmates have been based in Melbourne since around that time, and have released a string of great albums. The most recent was FVEY, released in 2014, a hard rock record with a political agenda, which we discuss in some detail in this episode. I first met Jon Toogood in 2011, when I interviewed him for a Mess+Noise ‘Storytellers’ feature about two of my favourite Shihad songs, ‘Home Again’ and ‘Deb’s Night Out’. I also interviewed him about drug use for my book Talking Smack in 2013, when Shihad were touring Australia while supporting Black Sabbath. He’s an energetic conversationalist and mad music fan above all else, which should become apparent pretty quickly. Our conversation touches on the concept of justice, which featured prominently in Jon’s writing for FVEY; how his marriage to a Sudanese woman changed his perspective and led to him undertaking charity work; his early interest in reading horror novels, which led to writing his first song for Shihad; the fine line between confidence and arrogance in musicians, and how he has learned to deal with negative reviews of his music. This interview took place in Brisbane in early June, when Shihad was performing three shows in south-east Queensland. I’d seen the band perform a couple of nights earlier, at the Hamilton Hotel, where they were in incredible form. They’re simply one of the best live rock bands I’ve ever seen, and I decided long ago to never pass up an opportunity to see them live. Jon and I spoke on a Sunday afternoon in an inner-city hotel room that he was sharing with guitarist Phil Knight; you’ll hear Phil arrive partway through the recording and try to quietly creep past with a box of freshly bought Fruit Loops. Jon Toogood is a songwriter and musician who has been at the helm of Shihad since 1988. A New Zealand rock institution that has consistently delivered churning riffs and soaring melodies over nine studio albums and eight EPs, Shihad have a reputation as a ferocious live act that's been hard-earned after more than 1,500 shows. Their two decade-plus career was recognised at the 2010 New Zealand Music Awards, where they were ushered into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame; they were also recently awarded with 'Most Singles in the NZ Charts by a NZ Artist' (25) and 'Most #1 Albums by a NZ Artist' (5) by Recorded Music NZ. Jon also fronts The Adults, an extra-curricular project starring some of his favourite New Zealand artists, including Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Shayne Carter (Dimmer, Straitjacket Fits) and Ladi 6. Jon took up guitar aged seven, but back then soccer and cricket were his still first love. A talented batsman, he captained the Wellington Representative cricket team, but at 15 he traded his bat and cricket whites for a guitar and black jeans and never looked back. Jon’s career highlights include playing in front of 60,000-strong crowds and Shihad's gold albums, but says nothing beats the rush of knowing when he’s written a song that works.
