Mike Davis-Marks: What a Nuclear Submariner Knows About High-Pressure Decision Making & Servant Leadership

Welcome to TheInquisitor Podcast

In this episode of The Inquisitor Podcast, host Marcus Cauchi speaks with Michael Davis-Marks, a veteran of the Royal Navy who commanded a nuclear-powered submarine and now focuses on leadership development and advocating for the veteran community. They discuss decision-making under pressure, the unique transferable skills veterans bring to civilian life, and the critical differences between traditional and effective leadership models like servant leadership. The conversation highlights the importance of training, teamwork, delegation, building trust, and fostering a culture where people feel valued and empowered to do their best work. Michael Davis-Marks: Spent 36 years in the Royal Navy, primarily as a submariner, including commanding a nuclear-powered submarine. Served in the British Embassy during 9-11. Since leaving the Navy 13 years ago, he has focused on leadership development and culture. He is also the managing editor of TheVeteran.uk, a publication that gives voice to the veteran community. His mission is to amplify the lived experience of veterans, challenge outdated stereotypes, and advocate for what armed forces veterans can offer to organisations, employers, and society. Key Discussion Points: Veterans as a Valuable Asset: Veterans possess extraordinary transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and commitment, which can be enormously helpful to organisations and society as a whole. There are approximately 2.2 million veterans in the UK, about a million of whom are of working age, representing a significant pool of talent. Challenging Stereotypes: The common stereotype of military people as "Colonel Blimp" or a "shouty sergeant" is inaccurate for the vast majority of veterans. Veteran Mindset: Many veterans, including Michael, don't initially realise how much they have to offer civilian life due to a self-effacing mindset developed through military training that prioritises the team over the individual. Decision Making Under Stress: The military trains individuals to remain calm and think clearly in high-pressure situations. The ability to make good decisions under stress is crucial and can be developed through training and building resilience. Leadership Defined: Leadership is not about telling people what to do. It's about motivating and inspiring people, helping them become better versions of themselves. Servant Leadership: This model posits that the leader is there to serve the people subordinate to them, helping them realise their full potential. It's about looking after the people in your charge, not just being in charge. Delegation vs. Abdication: Leaders who spend their time "doing" are stealing learning opportunities and growth from their people. Empowering people to work things out for themselves, rather than always providing the answer, is crucial for development. Michael's rule was "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions". Allowing people to "have a go," even if they make mistakes in a safe environment, fosters learning. Creating Conditions for Trust: Trust begins with the leader's self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and empathy. It is developed by assigning low-risk tasks initially, being a mentor and coach, gently nudging rather than directing, and providing encouragement and positive feedback. Leadership is Trainable: While some may be "born leaders," leadership skills can be taught and developed through training and practical experience. Openness to feedback and the realisation that one is not perfect are key to improvement. The Staircase of Learning: This concept describes the progression from unconscious incompetence (not knowing what you don't know) through conscious incompetence and conscious competence to unconscious competence (second nature). Training and repetition are critical to moving through these stages and building resilience. Continuous Improvement: In the military, standard operating procedures were changed "all the time" because you can't stand still; "every day is a school day". Agility of thought is essential because plans often don't survive first contact. The Leader's Role: The leader's job is to create the conditions for their people to do their best work. Delegating tasks to competent people allows the leader to step back, maintain a strategic view, and avoid becoming a bottleneck or single point of failure. The Importance of People: People are the most important asset in any organisation, not just numbers on a spreadsheet. Treat them as people. A high staff retention rate is often a sign of a happy and well-led company. People frequently leave jobs because of their boss, particularly if the boss prevents them from doing their best work. Beating people does not improve morale. Advice for New Managers: "Get Off Your Arse" (GOYA) is crucial advice. New managers should spend their initial time listening, walking around, asking curious questions about what people do, what they like/dislike, and what can be improved. Taking notes shows you are listening and helps you remember. Getting out and talking to people makes them feel important and that they belong. This approach should be routine, not just for the first few days. Lesson for a Younger Self: Michael would tell his 23-year-old self that he knows much less than he thinks and is surrounded by people who can help. He would advise working on relationships with others to learn and grow together as a team, emphasising that people are the most important aspect in everything. Recommended Resources: "Turn the Ship Around" by David Marquette (Discusses an "I intend to" model of leadership empowering the team). "Always Start With Why" by Simon Sinek. "Leaders Eat Last" by Simon Sinek (Highlights the principle of leaders serving those who rely on them). TheVeteran.uk: Publication giving voice to the veteran community. We start this week with a journey back in time, exploring some of the oldest and most resilient plants on the planet: ferns. Gardener, botanist and author Ben Dark has been uncovering some surprising stories about these living fossils as part of his sweeping journey – 2.5 billion years deep – into the fascinating history of plants. Ferns thrive in damp, shady garden corners — but they're not the only ones. Horticulturist Alessandra Sana faced this exact challenge when she took on the north-facing wall of RHS Wisley's walled garden. She shares her go-to plants and creative inspiration for transforming those tricky, low-light spots into lush, green sanctuaries. And finally, we cross the Atlantic to hear from John Sonnier, Head Gardener at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. His pioneering sustainable gardening practices have just earned him the prestigious Elizabeth Medal of Honour from the RHS. What would you do if someone you knew your entire life — your mother — suddenly revealed that she'd been a spy? Deborah Lawrenson turned her story into a novel.  The tangled web of espionage she weaves in The Secretary is fiction, but the background to the story is authentic, drawn in part from a seemingly innocent diary her mother wrote in 1958 while working at the British Embassy in Moscow. It's an exciting high stakes thriller with insightful social commentary and a vivid sense of place. Exactly the sort of novel she excels at. We spoke about Cold War Moscow, growing up as an embassy child, and the shock of discovering her mother's cloak-and-dagger past.

A sinologist is a scholar and expert of China, its language, history, politics, and culture - and the theme today is top to bottom the myriad questions looming over one of the largest political issues for China… Taiwan. Kerry published a book last year called The Taiwan Story: How a Small Island Will Dictate the Global Future. It is marvelous, and my hope was to do as much justice to the various questions which Kerry approaches Taiwan with as possible in a brief podcast. The big questions being, the economy, given Taiwan's semi conductor supremacy with its home grown TSMC, the perplexing idea that Xi would view Taiwanese reunification as the most significant achievement to his legacy, how a more fractured, less unified global order creates lots of wiggle room, Taiwan's history, and that despite having 95% Han ethnicity, what is it about Taiwan which makes them a distinctly different culture to China, Kerrys feeling for the inevitability of an attempt at reunification and lots more between those cracks. 00:00 - Kerry Brown01:20 - Big Opportunity For China04:13 - Brief Taiwan History07:33 - TSMC24:09 - What China Thinks Of Taiwan37:42 - Taiwanese Identity & Culture50:14 - It's All Xi52:35 - Opinions Of Taiwan58:30 - Kerry's Life Work1:06:00 - Kevin Rudd & Australia1:16:30 - Indonesia & Serendipity

Dom Stanton is Communications Counsellor at the British Embassy in Beijing. He was born in Leeds, in the sports-mad county of West Yorkshire. Yorkshire has played an important role in the development of sport, in particular football, cricket and rugby. It is home to the world's oldest football club (Sheffield FC, founded in 1857) and hosted the first ever local derby. It has produced some of England's greatest cricketers and other sportsmen and women. (If it was a country, Yorkshire would have finished 12th in the London 2012 medal table). Leeds is the biggest city in the UK with just one professional football team, Leeds United, and Dom grew up supporting Leeds and dreaming of playing for them one day. He's still waiting for the phone call.

Fred Nurke is missing! An over-ripe banana in a deserted Cannon Street shipping office is the only clue to his whereabouts. Inspector Ned Seagoon follows the trail to a British Embassy in South America. Why are Senor Gonzales Mess and his gang trying to cut down the only banana tree in the Embassy gardens, and what is the connection between Fred Nurke and the over-ripe banana?  Find out (maybe) by listening to this week's edition of Goon Pod, in which Tyler is joined by Jonathan Roberts! They also examine the wider usage of the word 'nurk' (in its various spellings), wonder at a major US news anchor referencing this particular show and discuss the Guatemala revolution of 1954. Episode 2076: Sir Tim Lankester on the promise, failure and legacy of Margaret Thatcher's monetarist revolution

Keen On Democracy

There will be a British general election on July 4. “The most consequential of our generation” no doubt many politicians will remind the voters. But almost exactly 45 years ago, there really was a profoundly consequential British election. Back in May 1979, Mrs Margaret Thatcher's Conservative party won power in an election that ultimately changed everything about Britain. In 1979, (Sir) Tim Lankester was the first economic private secretary to Margaret Thatcher and, in his new book, INSIDE THATCHER'S MONETARISM EXPERIMENT, he writes about the promise, failure and legacy of this radical economic gamble. Yet in spite of the economic failure of Thatcher's monetarist experiment, Sir Tim appears not a little nostalgic for a politician with the vision and will of the Iron Lady. “Mrs Thatcher never lied”, he reminded me about a politician whose success at the polls was rooted in the trust she established with the electorate. And it's this trust that seems most scarce now, not just in the UK, but also in the US and other late-stage western democracies. Sir Tim Lankester has led a distinguished career in economics and public service and is an ardent supporter of charity and the arts. After studying at St John's College, Cambridge, and Yale University, Tim went on to enjoy an career with World Bank and then in the English Civil Service, including; at the British Embassy in Washington D.C., as Private Secretary to James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher, as Permanent Secretary at the Overseas Development Administration (now the DFID), and at the Department of Education. He retired from public service in 1994, for which he was knighted. He went on to serve as Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies (1996 – 2000), President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford (2001 - 2009), and Chair of the Council of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2008 – 2014). From 2007 to 2015, Tim was Chair of The Place and formerly a board member of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama and Governor of the Royal College of Music. Currently, Tim sits on the boards for many charities, including; Wells Maltings Trust, Norfolk; International Foundation for Arts and Culture; MBI AL Jaber Foundation; and Karachi Education Initiative UK. Tim also sits on the Board for the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Art and Culture, University of East Anglia, and is and Honorary Fellow of both SOAS and St John's College, Oxford.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. He has collected and shared a humongous amount of evidence during that period. Based on that evidence he released four papers in June 2022 and subsequently was ‘advised' to do a book. The publication of Prayer Man: More Than a Fuzzy Picture represents an unprecedented decade-long investigation of Lee Harvey Oswald's last 48 hours. Bart Kamp has produced a comprehensive work, which delves into Lee Harvey Oswald and the other Texas School Book Depository employees inside the building during and shortly after President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22nd 1963. Kamp's detailed research also examines the period of Oswald's incarceration and interrogations. It presents an entirely new and deep perspective of how the law enforcement agencies gathered their evidence that weekend. It reveals a dramatic new context in relation to understanding Lee Harvey Oswald's innocence. Within these pages are many new and never before published revelations that contrast the altered accounts that were represented before the Warren Commission and challenges many commonly accepted assumptions and interpretations.

Today,The Two Mikesspoke with international affairs expert Michael Waller, who works at the Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C.Mr. Waller has just published a book with the provocative but all too true titleBig Intel: How the CIA and FBI Went from Cold War Heroes to Deep State Villains(available at Amazon(https://www.amazon.com/Big-Intel-Heroes-State-Villains/dp/1684513537/ref=sr_1_1?crid=RD5XCL8X5JOL&keywords=big+intel&qid=1706903589&s=books&sprefix=big+intel%2Cstripbooks%2C272&sr=1-1), Cosco and many other book sellers.)From heroic to treasonous in little less than three-five years (1991-2024), how could that be? For the CIA, Mr. Waller explained, it actually began during the four-communist riddled Roosevelt administrations, through the organization of the Agency's predecessor the Office of Special Services (OSS), led by General William Donovan, which – along with the FBI-- condoned and supported British covert action inside the United States against American citizens who opposed getting into another European war by defaming, blackmailing, setting up, and perhaps killing loyal Americans. The most flagrant and odious destruction of an American citizen was, of course, that of Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and his organization, which was called “America First”, against whom Roosevelt, Hoover, Donovan, and Britain's intelligence chief in NYC, William Stephenson, coordinated to destroy Lindbergh and America First by falsely painting them as pro-Nazi. Since then, it seems, destroying America First organizations in America has become something of a favorite presidential hobby.European and American communists also lent a helping hand against America during the Roosevelt administration. General Donovan was given a deputy as gift by the British intelligence agency Mi6, named Richard Ellis. Mr. Ellis, at the time of his arrival at OSS, had been working for Stephenson in New York and at the British Embassy in Washington, while simultaneously serving as a Soviet mole inside Mi6.He thus acquired the perhaps unprecedented stature as a pro-Stalin spy inside the U.S. and British intelligence agencies.Mr. Wallers book follows the trail of the FBI, OSS, and CIA from the c. 1920 until today. He discusses how, over the years, the Frankfurt School, Herbert Marcuse, and many other communists grew influential in most prestigious U.S. universities, which in turn trained students in an anti-American mindset and sent them off to staff much of the federal bureaucracy, where they served as a solvent to patriotism and over decades built a bureaucracy that is now the murderous heart of the deep state. Mr. Waller's book is both an enthralling and educational read, instructing the reader how the deep-state was born, how it was cultivated, and why it has intentionally dragged the U.S. republic to the brink of annihilation.Subscribe to Freedom First Network on Rumble to watch all of our shows LIVE.In these tumultuous times of Pandemic Panic Theater, global chaos, and impending food shortages, the Biden Regime and globalists are apparently not fans of you owning precious metals. How do we talk about China? It's a question every analyst, academic, policymaker, and reporter probably needs to ask themselves. Is China, as some of the hawks claim, an existential threat to the world order? Is it on the verge of aggressively taking the number one spot—or is it on the verge of collapse? The Resilient Recruiter
How to Build Trust and Relationships at Scale by Hosting Meet-up Events, with Steven Li, Ep #175

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2023 64:18

Meaningful relationships are foundational to success in recruitment. The challenge is that building a network and earning trust takes time. For many recruiters, it can take years to become established in their market niche.    What if there was a way to speed up this process and achieve faster results?    My special guest, Steven Li, has discovered a way to build relationships at scale by organizing meet-ups in his sector. Steven's strategy has enabled him to progress from a rookie recruiter at Robert Half to the Top Biller in APAC within three years.    Hosting events isn't a new concept, but Steven has really taken this strategy to the next level. In fact, Steven is renowned for his cybersecurity events in Tokyo and they've become so popular that he holds a lottery to determine who gets to attend.   In this episode, Steven shares his learnings and best practices on how to organize events that add value to his sector. He revealed his process for running successful meet-ups, the mistakes he's made and insights gleaned along the way.    Steven is a Senior Division Director at Robert Half Japan and specializes in Cyber Security recruiting. In 2022, Steven was recognized as the top biller across APAC, as well as managing the number one perm team.     Episode Outline and Highlights   [02:30] From financial services to recruiting - Steven shares his story. [09:00] Why “simple does not always mean easy” and how Steven turned things around after his initial struggles as a recruiter. [12:21] Fast-tracking his career to becoming a top biller in just three years.   [21:06] Adding value - how Steven organizes events for the cybersecurity community. [32:14] Leveraging LinkedIn to make your meet-up a success. [40:13] Things to do (and not do) when hosting events. [47:01] Steven talks about leadership and innovation. [51:00] Making the transition from top producer to billing manager. [58:38] Having a mission that goes beyond you as an individual.   Building Relationships at Scale by Organizing Meet-Up Events   Steven is a Gen Y recruiter who believes in the value of working smart. In 2019, he quit his job in the Financial Markets and moved to Tokyo to become a recruiter. He thought it was going to be easy but when the pandemic came in 2020, his resilience was tested which drove him to work smarter.    Steven took inspiration from Greg Savage's advice on branding and becoming a micro-celebrity in your marketplace. He connected this to the idea of building relationships at scale in recruitment, and that is when they started doing these meet-up events.   He shared his learnings on hosting events and how to make the most of them. Here are some takeaways that we covered:   How he hosts invite-only events to build a safer community for cybersecurity experts. How they were able to hold these events in prestigious locations such as Google, Microsoft, and even the British Embassy. Learning from past mistakes, especially on the logistics. Things to watch out for - such as ensuring there's no selling or pitching at the event.   How did this benefit Steven and Rober Half? He became the APAC top-biller in 2022, which was only his third year in recruitment. Plus, Steven's strategy has now been adopted by other divisions. Robert Half Japan is now hosting community meetup events for Cyber Security, Data, Developers, Consulting, and Executive Search   Having a Clear Mission That Goes Beyond You   Steven has a “mission that goes beyond himself,” which is to build a stronger cybersecurity community in Japan, by giving people the platform to share the best ideas and thoughts. This is something that I also firmly believe: if you have a clear mission, that is bigger than you or your company goals but is one that everyone in your market can get behind, then people will go out of their way to help you.   Having this clarity on your “WHY” and purpose, and how you are able to connect it to how you will add value to your community is a vital key driver to success. Like so many of our guests, successful recruiters and recruitment business owners find ways to add value to their community. Hearing Steven's story on how he is able to tie up his marketing with his mission can inspire a lot in our industry to do the same.   Developing Leadership Skills    Steven is still ‘young' as a recruiter, but what I also admire about him is how he takes ownership of his development. Top billers don't necessarily make good managers. Steven has fast-tracked his career because he's taking responsibility for his own development, proactively seeking to refine his leadership skills through books, mentorship, and coaching.    This is true with tenured and seasoned recruitment business leaders that I know - they never stop learning and developing. Leadership is a lifelong journey, and there is always room for growth and improvement, regardless of experience.    Our Sponsors   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro and Recruitment Entrepreneur.   i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform.
