Send us a text Brace for a raw, unfiltered episode of the Self-Reflection Podcast. Lira Ndifon ignites a firestorm, dissecting the global backlash against Captain Ibrahim Traoré and the relentless battle for Africa's liberation. This isn't just news; it's a battle cry for unity, a demand for sovereignty, and a reckoning with the forces that seek to control the continent's destiny.Lira's opening is a direct challenge, a call to action for every African, every listener, to wake up and engage. She cuts through the noise, demanding answers and sparking a conversation that echoes the urgency of the moment. At the heart of this episode is the explosive controversy surrounding Captain Ibrahim Traoré's leadership and the accusations hurled by a US General. Lira dissects the narrative, exposing the double standards and the historical patterns of Western interference that have plagued Africa for centuries. This isn't just about one leader; it's about the soul of a continent fighting for its right to self-determination.Lira plays a damning clip of a US Congressional hearing, laying bare the power dynamics at play. She doesn't shy away from naming names, from challenging the hypocrisy, and from exposing the tactics used to maintain control. This isn't a history lesson; it's a live autopsy of neocolonialism. But this isn't just about external forces. Lira turns the lens inward, challenging Africans to confront their own roles in perpetuating the status quo. She plays a powerful speech by Captain Traoré, a rallying cry against fear and a testament to the power of unity.Lira connects Traoré's courage to the hopes and dreams of a generation yearning for authentic leadership. She doesn't mince words, she doesn't sugarcoat the stakes. This is a life-or-death struggle for the future of Africa. In a direct address to her Cameroonian brothers and sisters, Lira issues a stark ultimatum: demand change, seize your destiny, or be condemned to repeat the past. She uses Traoré's example as a blueprint for a new era of African leadership, a beacon of hope in a sea of despair. The episode culminates in a powerful call to action for the youth of Africa. Lira challenges them to rise up, to reclaim their narrative, and to build a legacy of innovation and liberation. She ends with a plea to armed groups, a desperate cry for peace, a stark reminder of the human cost of endless conflict. This isn't just a podcast; it's a movement. Lira Ndifon has lit a fire, and the world is watching. Will Africa rise? Will Africans reclaim their destiny? It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma discuss the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on Pete Hegseth's character assassination, South Korean President Yoon's failed martial law takeover and backlash, US v. Skrmetti, final US Congressional election tallies, Trump's Billionaire defense contractor nomination for Deputy Secretary of Defence, a Jewish settler pogrom on West Bank Palestinians, Congressional Oversight, and judicial confirmation in the Senate, before spending some time admiring Fox News' attempt to run cover for the astonishingly quick downfall of Pete Hegseth with accusations of abuse (be it of women or alcohol) coming from every corner of his social life. After briefly touching on some of Hegseth's own problematic history of critiquing Donald Trump, Sam and Emma parse through the background on Stephen Feinberg – billionaire investor, hedge fund manager, and Trump's pick for Deputy Defence Secretary – and his myriad conflicts of interest when it comes to the world of military contracts, also touching on the GOP's slim Congressional majority and the major fights it sets up for 2025. Wrapping up, the MR Team highlights Ben Wikler's promising campaign for DNC Chair in the wake of the astonishing failure of the consultant class in the 2024 elections, and issues a forewarning of the threat of “shared sacrifice” under a crypto-backed austerity regime. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through some unsurprising developments around which services Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency can (Social Security) and cannot (military budget) cut, discuss the apparent murder of United Healthcare's CEO, and reflect on the now-downtrodden legacy of Dinesh D'Souza's “2000 Mules.” Tim Pool struggles to grapple with the intricacies of language and social dynamics, and the MR Crew highlights a more heartwarming side of Kash Patel's history, plus, your calls and IMs! I posted a note on Twitter/X with this quote: “The content updates had not previously been treated as code because they were strictly configuration information.” This is from testimony given by Crowdstrike to a US Congressional committee in trying to explain how they grounded much of the airline industry a few months ago. That was a mess of a situation, and apparently, the vendor didn't think their configuration was part of their code. That's an amazing viewpoint to me. The fact that any developer or manager thinks that their configuration data isn't a part of their code is worth testing. Yet, I see this attitude all the time, where developers, QA, managers, and more think that the code is the only thing that changes or doesn't change, ignoring the fact that there are configuration items that affect the code and need to be managed appropriately. Certainly, if the config data were in enums rather than in a file or database they'd feel differently. Read the rest of Everything is Code

Last week's episode covered a man-made existential risk to humanity—nuclear war. But what about natural risks? Could there, right now, be a vast asteroid sailing through space that'll collide with Earth, sending us go the way of the dinosaurs? In this rocky episode of The Studies Show, Tom and Stuart look at the data on how often we should expect civilisation-destroying asteroids to hit Earth - and what if anything we can do about it if one is approaching. The Studies Show is brought to you by Works in Progress magazine, the best place on the internet to find mind-changing essays on science, technology, and human progress. Today we focus on the Soviet nuclear program with Thomas Cochran. Tom directed nuclear disarmament projects at the Natural Resources Defense Council from 1973 until his retirement in 2016. He has received numerous awards for his work on nuclear disarmament, including the public service award from the Federation of American Scientists and the Szilard Award from the American Physical Society, both in 1987. Tom was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1989, and, due to his work, the Natural Resources Defense Council received the AAAS Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Award that same year. Today we discuss the Soviet nuclear weapons program, from Stalin finding out about the bomb to Gorbachev's unilateral test moratorium. Tom played key roles in the seismic monitoring experiment, visits by US Congressional delegations to sensitive Soviet military installations, the Black Sea experiment, and other adventures in nuclear de-escalation.
Randy Tift, Former USAID Chief A&A Policy Officer, joins Mike Shanley as co-host, along with guest Michael Metzler, Executive Director of USAID's Private Sector Engagement (PSE) Hub. As the first formalized private sector engagement office, USAID is the longest running donor in the space. USAID's influence continues to evolve, especially as more U.S. foreign assistance professionals are shifting their focus towards the local development of communities and engaging in the private sector space. With this shift comes the need for new policies and strategies necessary to streamline future projects and to support complex relationships between USAID and private sectors. This impactful discussion focuses on USAID's Private Sector Engagement's (PSE) priorities and progress, learning from PSE USAID projects, PSE and localization, and USAID and impact investing. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:53] Michael Metzler gives a rundown of the history of USAID's Private Sector Engagement. [7:00] What inspired USAID to shift their focus to the commercial interests of their private sector partners and how has this shift benefited USAID and their private partners? [12:44] Michael touches on why USAID is such a great resource for private sectors and local partners trying to establish themselves to tap into. [15:00] Randy introduces PSE Modernize, the overarching term for several initiatives that USAID has launched to track the agency's private sector partnerships, and to bring data to bear for USAID planners, both in the missions and in DC. This has brought more order to managing PSE partners, resulting in a real system for customer relationship management and knowledge management. Michael shares his thoughts on the launch. [23:00] Michael discusses Compass, the Salesforce-based enterprise customer relationship management system that USAID is preparing to launch. He also touches on the staff that will be running and implementing Compass. [28:25] Randy asks Michael how USAID will engage with companies that work through supply chains, that cross borders, or work across sectors and industries? How will USAID incentivize the support for those complex relationships with their workforce? [34:00] Discussion of the A&A Strategy and the Private Sector Engagement Policy, both launched in December of 2018. What has been accomplished and learned throughout the years since these launches? [42:00] Michael touches on the Unlock Aid Organization. [45:43] How has USAID developed and updated their systems to better assist local partners and private sectors? [52:38] Randy inquires about the continuing role of nongovernmental organizations and nonprofits in private sector engagement and relationships with the Development Finance Corporation. [58:30] Michael touches on the Edge Fund and why it was created. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Many U.S. foreign assistance professionals disagreed on the importance of engaging with multinational corporations, and even local firms, whose primary motive is mere profit. But there's really been a major shift in terms of the development community and engaging the private sector. USAID founded the first formalized private sector engagement office in 2000 with the intention to formalize an approach and its thinking around engaging with the private sector. The Private Sector Engagement Policy and the A&A Strategy, both firsts of their kind, were both released in December of 2018. Michael reflects on that time period and what the resulting awards have accomplished. When the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) was created, there was a significant hole in the agency in terms of its ability to transact. Thus, the Mission Transaction Unit was created to allow for the transaction that USAID brings into the DFC. QUOTES: “Focusing on the actual commercial interests of our private sector partners is not only a good thing to do, it's an absolutely necessary thing to do. In fact, we went further than that and said, it's actually a history of how we are going to do development into the future. So out of that recognition came the first ever PSE policy for the agency, and, if you read the policy, you will see that it presents a very bold vision.” - Michael Metzler “USAID has one of the best networks in the business community, as well as a wide team of experts in all technical areas. These are areas that private sectors would like to tap into. USAID has some of the best reputations and the best connections with government officials that can be leveraged. For a company that's coming from the outside that is trying to establish themselves, that is gold.” - Michael Metzler “It's remarkable for partners to know that for any private sector engagement concern, they can find out who those people are. For various reasons, including security, most technical leads for health or food security are not listed, you have to do research to find out who they are. But with PSE, you know who they are, it's public.” - Randy Tift “Localization, I also read as not just localized within the countries themselves, but actually engaging these smaller businesses that do struggle to break into larger contracts.” - Michael Metzler RESOURCES: Aid Market Podcast Mike Shanley - LinkedIn Randy Tift - LinkedIn BIOGRAPHIES: Michael Metzler, Executive Director, USAID Private Sector Engagement Hub: Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator Michael Metzler oversees IPI's Private Sector Engagement Hub, the Center for Economics and Market Development, and manages the Agency's relationship with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. *) Prepping for Rafah invasion, Israel orders 40,000 tents from China Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the purchase of 40,000 tents from China to be set up in besieged Gaza, Israeli media reported, in preparation for a ground invasion of Rafah. It comes as Netanyahu downplayed global fears of a humanitarian catastrophe if Israel launches a planned ground invasion into Gaza's southernmost city, where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians have taken refuge. Speaking to a US Congressional delegation visiting Israel, Netanyahu said people sheltering in Rafah will be able to move away from the fighting. *) Biden team official flags plausible genocide in Gaza, resigns in protest A US State Department official has resigned in protest of the Biden administration's support for Israel's war on Gaza. Annelle Sheline, who worked as a foreign affairs officer in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, accused Washington of “directly enabling” a plausible genocide in the besieged Palestinian enclave. Sheline wrote in an article for CNN that she was “unable to serve an administration that enables such atrocities,” and resigned. *) F-16s won't change anything in Ukraine battlefield: Putin Russian news agencies quoted President Vladimir Putin as telling military pilots that if Western countries supply Ukraine with F-16 fighters, the aircraft will not alter the situation on the battlefield. Putin said the fighters can carry nuclear weapons and Moscow would have to take account of that in its military planning. Putin's remarks followed comments by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the F-16 aircraft should arrive in Ukraine in the coming months. *) Colombia kicks out Argentine diplomats after Milei calls Petro ‘terrorist' Colombia has ordered the expulsion of Argentine diplomats from their embassy in the Andean nation, Colombia's Foreign Ministry said. It cited “denigrating” comments by Argentine President Javier Milei about Colombian President Gustavo Petro. In a recent interview with news channel CNN, which has not yet been aired in full, Milei called Petro a “terrorist”, “murderer” and “communist”. *) Vinicius Junior breaks down as he laments racism in Spanish football Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Junior broke down in tears at a news conference as he spoke about the racism he suffered in Spain. The 23-year-old forward said, “Playing football is important, but the fight against racism is very important.” Vinicius said that racism is a global problem and noted that football's governing bodies could all “do more things.”
In this episode of the Spybrary podcast, the hosts discuss the book 'Four Shots in the Night' by Henry Hemming. Four Shots In the Night tells the story of the 1986 murder of a British spy inside the IRA and the subsequent investigation that took place 30 years later. It explores the role of Martin McGuinness and British intelligence in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The hosts also discuss the historical context of the conflict and the process of getting Sinn Fein involved in the political process as well as the Kenova report. The book is praised for its extensive research and the new insights it provides into the intelligence operations during that time. What is Four Shots in the Night by Henry Hemming about? Four Shots in the Night is the story of a political murder: the killing of an IRA member turned British informant. The search for justice for this one man's death—his body found in broad daylight, with tape over his eyes, an undisguised hit—would deliver more than the truth. It exposed his status as an informant and led to protests, campaigns, far-reaching changes to British law, a historic ruling from a senior judicial body, a ground-breaking police investigation, and bitter condemnation from a US Congressional commission. And there have been persistent rumors that one of the country's most senior politicians, the Sinn Fein leader Martin McGuinness, might have been personally involved in this particular murder. Relying on archival research, interviews, and the findings of a new complete police investigation, Four Shots in the Night tells a riveting story not just of this murder but of his role in the decades-long conflict that defined him--the Troubles. And the questions it tackles are even larger: how did the Troubles really come to an end? Was it a feat of diplomatic negotiation, as we've been told--or did spies play the decisive role? And how far can, or should, a spy go, for the good of his country? Four Shots in the Night is a page-turner that will make you think.

Aliens are back on the radar after a US Congressional hearing in the summer that featured former intelligence officer, David Grusch. The US Air Force veteran was once part of a task force created to look into what used to be called UFOs. Mr Grusch gave evidence that caused a sensation in America, claiming that the US military had, for decades, been in possession of crashed UFOs and 'non-human biologics'. His shocking claims were evidence that, whatever their accuracy, both created and reflected a growing and serious debate - from astrophysicists and astrobiologists to policymakers about what if anything, is out there. Anything alive and anything civilised. So, as 2023 turns into 2024, what is the state of our understanding about whether or not we are alone in space? David Aaronovitch explores the history of UFOs stretching back to the 1940s and discusses whether intelligent life exists beyond Earth. David Aaronovitch talks to: Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, British space scientist and science educator Garrett Graff, Journalist and historian. Author of ‘UFO: The Inside Story of the U.S. Government's Search for Alien Life Here ― and Out There'. On today's program we're looking into the bipartisan imperialist consensus in Washington when it comes to Venezuela.Following a recent US Congressional delegation to Brazil, Chile, and Colombia by Representatives Greg Casar, Nydia Velázquez, Joaquin Castro, Maxwell Frost, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, media outlets were once again filled with headlines about the need for the US to change its relationship with Latin America. Despite the potential for this trip to “replace” or “realign” the US-Latin America relationship, public comments by lawmakers following their trip, Democrats are still deeply wedded to the US imperialist project. To talk about the very real consequences of tepid and insufficient calls by so-called progressives to merely “review” US sanctions on Venezuela, Host José Luis Granados Ceja speaks with Hector Figarella, a Venezuela-born activist and organizer with the Anti-Imperialist Action Committee. Venezuela Analysis' Andreína Chávez also joins the program to talk about her recent piece titled ‘Clear As The Full Moon' about the harsh circumstances Venezuela has been forced to endure at the hands of imperialism.Music: Embandolaos - Los Caimanes NegrosAli Primera - Canción para los valientes

We take some time to deep dive what's going on down south, South America that is, with the returning Gabriel Salazar Sing who uses a US Congressional delegation visit to the continent to talk through issues in Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, and more. Plus, Gabriel explains how Spanish language media covers things a bit differently, and what to watch for in the US news media about things going on in Central and South America to watch out for from elections, to economics, to geopolitical concerns. Then, Nathalie Voit joins Heard Tell to talk about her writing on how the ongoing college admittance and affirmative action debate has brought a focus on legacy admissions, what they should be but have become, how they affect institutions and potential students, and how this fits into the larger conversation about what higher education is, has becomes, and needs to improve on. We end on a good note with the incredible story of a dog who escaped the animal shelter for the care center across the street so many times they just adopted him.All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell.--------------------Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inboxQuestions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? Mick West joins us to talk about trying to solve UFO mysteries while keeping his cool. Mick is the author of Escaping the Rabbit Hole: How to Debunk Conspiracy Theories Using Facts, Logic and Respect. He hosts a leading site for analysis of weird aerial phenomenon called Metabunk. He also maintains the site "Contrail Science" which tries to resolve the pseudoscience of "Chemtrails." In the intro there are some clips about NASA and US Congressional looks at the "UAP" phenomenon. I will argue that UAP is just a UFOmism and that the general public is largely unaware these are all just the same old things driven by the same old limitations of human perception and cognition. I mention Jason Colavito in the intro. It's worth checking out his historical take on this modern rebranding. Also mentioned in the episode was the sad (probably psychogenic) syndrome known as "Morgellons Disease." I wanted to include a link for the curious. Learn more about your ad choices. The chief executive of TikTok has been defending the Chinese-owned video-sharing app in the face of hostile questioning at a US Congressional committee hearing. Shou Zi Chew denied TikTok is a national security risk and played down the company's connection to China. He insisted data would never be given to the Chinese Communist Party, but did accept that data is currently accessible to staff in China. The committee chair Cathy Rodgers described TikTok as a weapon of the Chinese Communist Party that ought to be banned. Members of Congress also accused TikTok of delivering harmful content to young people.
