In this special bonus episode of our season on the awesome movie year of 2003, we're talking about South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook's Oldboy. Directed and co-written by Park Chan-wook (based on the comic book series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi) and starring Choi Min-sik, Kang Hye-jung and Yoo Ji-tae, Oldboy is the middle film in Park's so-called “vengeance trilogy.” The post Oldboy (2003 Bonus Episode) appeared first on Awesome Movie Year.

From Karen Krizanovich, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die: "Mysticism, poetry, school days, and a futuristic bedroom are only some of the wonders found in Oldboy. A thriller that hinges on oedipal taboos and blind destiny, hypnotism, and fate, this breakthrough film - part action, part drama, part psychological thriller - has introduced Korean cinema to more viewers than any other film. The story is more direct and compelling that director Park Chan-wook's popular previous film, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), and features an explosive beginning. A man is imprisoned for fiteen years without an explanation. Upon escape, he must find his kidnapper in only five days. "This violent, elegiac masterpiece is based on a Japanese manga cartoon by Garon Tsuchiya. Actor Min-sik Choi, who performed his own stunts, trained rigorously for his role as hapless kidnap victim Dae-su, a man who tries to escape his windowless prison by ingeniously digging through a skyscraper wall into thin air but is released before he can try his tunnel. Once free, he vows revenge, Monte Cristo-style, against the kidnapper who has effectively robbed him of his daughter, his wife, and his life. Now a ragged fighting machine who resembles a Korean Charles Bronson in a fright wig, Dae-su is befriended by a beautiful sushi chef (Hye-jeong Kang) whom he engages by eating a live squid and then passing out on the counter. Such is the knockdown, drag-out lifestyle of Oldboy. However complex the tale, it is underpinned by a logic that unfolds clearly, easily incorporating the film's various flashbacks. Progressing at a pace that sometimes leaves one breathless but also leaves room for thought, Oldboy's choreographed fight scenes are both innovative and surprising - and of the violence serves the plot. Despite its brutality, it is ultimately a black comedy that deftly rolls elements of mob thriller and vengeance mystery into one. After winning the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004, the director stunned the audience by thanking the cast and crew, then thanking the four squid who gave up their lives for the vivid sushi bar scene." In our last episode of this mini-season, we have reached the end of our focus on the Martial Arts genre, with 2011's THE RAID. After some perhaps surprising reviews, we talk about how who/where we are in life has a huge effect on our reception of the films we watch, as well as some discussions of cinematic violence and consequences. Next Time Our next mini-season is vampire films, and we kick off with 1922's seminal NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR. (It's not the first vampire film, but it is the earliest ‘mainstream' hit...and the first we could readily get hold of, for viewing purposes!) Here's a reminder of that Jackie Chan video referred to in our DRUNKEN MASTER episode, and again today. This is worth reading, thinking about the idea of cinematic claustrophobia — as Rob mentions when talking about the way this film is shot. We also talked about the idea of the underdog — a through-line which you can see from a character like Jirokichi, nearly a hundred years ago, to Rama; you can read a lot more here Finally, in a good place to end our focus on the Martial Arts genre, here's a good summary article (including some films we've covered, and some we haven't been able to).
BIG NEWS! Because our Kenta Shinohara podcasts were delayed we didn’t get around to covering a lot of important news from the past couple months. To remedy that, we decided to record a big news-focused podcast to get everyone up to speed! …This was a big bad idea. We accumulated nearly twelve pages worth of news, tallying to over one hundred stories in total! To make matters worse, we began recording late at night after I was already exhausted from drawing for nearly 20 hours that day. Thanks to a spotty internet connection, we ended up needing two recording sessions and over four hours of rough audio to cover everything we wanted to. Needless to say, recording this was a tiring process. You can definitely hear the exhaustion in my voice by the end of this podcast, alongside Colton’s groans of impatience. Though frankly, listening back to this episode I did most of the talking, so it’s kinda funny that Colton was more vocally upset by the experience. ^^, Regardless of how frustrating the process was, this was a necessary podcast to make. Discussing manga news is the reason this show originally came into being, and doing a purely news-focused episode brings us nostalgically back to the roots of our early episodes. Did we go a little overboard in the mountain of content we attempted to surmount? Perhaps. But hopefully you’ll find this podcast as valuable as we found these stories important to discuss. The Thanksgiving movie rush is upon us and The Movie Date team is here to tell you what to see and what to skip this holiday weekend. On this special Wednesday version of the podcast, Kristen Meinzer and Rafer Guzman review "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," "Black Nativity," "Old Boy", "Homefront," and "Frozen." Idris Elba plays Nelson Mandela in the biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." The movie chronicles Mandela's life leading up to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Naomie Harris plays politician and Mandela's wife, Winnie Mandela. Spike Lee's "Oldboy," is a conspiracy thriller starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film is based on Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga novel of the same name which was released in 2003. "Black Nativity," is based on the libretto by Langston Hughes and stars Forest Whitaker, Angela Basset, Jennifer Hudson, and Jacob Latimore. Action and crime abound in "Homefront," starring James Franco, Jason Stathom, and Winona Ryder. The movie is Sylvester Stallone's adaption of the novel by Chuck Logan. Finally, "Frozen," the new animated Disney movie, tells the tale of one girl's journey to find her sister and save her kingdom from a never ending winter. Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff star in this family friendly adventure. And as an added bonus, Kristen interviews Josh Gad who plays the lovable snowman Olaf in "Frozen."
