The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 10th and final study session on Andrée Blouin's My Country, Africa: Autobiography of the Black Pasionaria. A pivotal figure in the history of counter-racism/anti-colonialism throughout the continent of Africa, Blouin is not as well known as South Africa's Madiba and Winnie Mandela, Kenya's Maus Maus and other freedom fighters who participated in combating White Terrorism in Africa. However, Blouin was of monumental importance and, consequently, a target of CIA/White Supremacy campaigns. Gus T. was ignorant about Ms. Blouin, but she was prominently featured in the new documentary, Soundtrack to a Coup d'État - which examines the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. The film makes time to quote from Blouin's autobiography about the efforts to assassinate she, her family and Lumumba. Last week, Blouin described herself as a "militant," but made time to say: "It would be unfair to say that all the whites in the Congo were detestable (Racist)" Gus noted how cliché this remark is - especially for a "militant." She then turned to say the real enemies of Africa are Africans (non-white people). She also described the extraordinary faith Patrice Lumumba placed in her - including battling on her behalf publicly. This would seem to contradict the notion of legions of sexist black males who seek to dominate females. Nelson and Winnie Mandela were one of the most famous couples of the 20th century. Their relationship became a powerful symbol of the freedom struggle in apartheid South Africa, but it was also dogged by infidelity, violence, Nelson's long imprisonment and the oppressive weight of the regime they fought against. In Jonny Steinberg's recent book, Winnie & Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage, the South African writer chronicles a tragic love story that was both personal and deeply political. The book has recently been shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize and Rob Attar caught up with Jonny to find out more. Despite the fact that her mom detested her counter-racist efforts - even her work to get better medical treatment for non-white children. Blouin detailed the sad history of black males abusing black females to release their frustrations about the System of White Supremacy. #FirstTimeLastTime Portions of her work also seemed to suggest that Blouin's activist work was the result of her having a White father and producing children with several White Men. She contrasted the White Male ambition with the alleged cowardice and abuse of black males. This didn't sound like her mother's former partner Joseph Mialou, a decent black male whom her mother rejected. He only relented when Blouin caused a public spectacle arguing with White people who insisted medical assistance is for Whites only. The White man refused to allow her mother into his residence and made it a habit to brutalize and maim the black people who served him. For many years, South Africa was seen as a poster child for peaceful reconciliation and the triumph of good over evil. The “Rainbow Nation” image brought tourism, international investment, and major global events such as the 2010 World Cup. But beneath the glitz, there was a darker side: grinding poverty, widespread corruption, violent xenophobia, and close ties with authoritarian regimes. These days, South Africa seems intent on restoring its international image as a moral superpower. FP deputy editor Sasha Polakow-Suransky is joined by Sisonke Msimang, the author of Always Another Country and The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela, and Tony Leon, the former head of the Democratic Alliance and leader of South Africa's official opposition in Parliament from 1999 to 2007. Die woordvoerder van die Vroueliga, Sarah Mokwebo, sê Winnie Mandela was 'n dapper leier en onwrikbare voorstander van geregtigheid. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (1946-2018) was an activist and social worker who led a key role in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. She was Nelson Mandela's wife and supported him through his 27 years in prison. She was called the "Mother of the Nation” by her supporters, though later in life her legacy was marred by controversy. as a Black South African, my existence and freedom today are only possible because of the liberation efforts of anti-apartheid revolutionaries like Steve Biko, Winnie Mandela, Chris Hani, and Nelson Mandela. all of these people were labeled terrorists by the apartheid government and international community. like Israel, the USA and UK financially supported the South African apartheid government (until it was no longer popular to). after many attempts at non-violent protest, the ANC had to turn to armed struggle. they found that there was no other call for justice and freedom for Black South Africans that would be heeded. this is the case in all liberation struggles. the violence that was used to oppose the apartheid regime in South Africa can not be put on equal footing with the extreme violence of apartheid itself, and must always be viewed in its proper context: an attempt by an indigenous people to be free from the militarized and everyday terror of a white supremacist apartheid state. the same is true for Palestine, with respect to Zionism. decolonization is not a metaphor. when we see thorns of violence, and when they pierce our skin, we must look at them and consider: if i am against this thorn, i must acknowledge that this thorn has a stem, this stem has a root, and if i am not against the root of violence, suffering, and terror that gave this thorn life and made its existence not only possible but inevitable, I cannot in good conscience claim to be against violence at all.  colonialism and imperialism are the root of all structural violence; are the true terrors against humanity and this earth, so normalized and so protected that to condemn them is to be labeled with words only appropriate for the militarized forces of the world that create the most heinous, and organized forms of violence we as human beings have ever been made to experience and witness. this is an episode in solidarity with my Palestinian siblings, suffering under the weight of an oppressive regime. Free Palestine — free every colonized people from imperialism and colonialism, from bombs, raids, checkpoints, seiges, humiliation, terror, blockades, forced removals, occupations, prisons, slavery, and exploitation. re-indigenize this earth so that peace, community, and love can be returned to the center of human life on this precious planet. Winnie Mandela, the late wife of South Africa's first democratic president, Nelson Mandela, feared that corruption would destroy the African National Congress (ANC). In fact, she was so worried about it that she even enlisted the help of a former Apartheid-era Crime Intelligence (CI) officer Doc Pretorius to mitigate the damage. The two became so close over two decades that she called him “the son I never had” in the inscription to him of her book “491 Days”. Pretorius - who wrote a book titled “Winnie Mandela's Last Wish” - gives BizNews the inside story of the “unholy trinity” between transnational organised crime, criminal terrorist groups and corruption that is “protected by securitisation structures”. He believes it is still possible to fix the problems in the country, and urges people to come forward to do so “because if we're not gonna work together, people might find out that they're going to get exposed…” He also shares details of a meeting between him, Mrs Mandela and Jacob Zuma; and reveals what she told him about the Stompie Affair that so severely damaged her international standing. - Chris Steyn

People who live in northwest Gwinnett County will have a chance to get a year's worth of free pizza next week. A new Pizza Hut location, which is run by Flynn Restaurant Group, opened at 1550 Buford Highway in Buford on Dec. 23, but it's what the new store has planned for its grand opening festivities next week that will have tongues salivating. The first 25 customers who are in line at the store on Jan. 6 will get free pizza for a year. There are some limits on what pizzas qualify for the free pizza for a year, and what locations the pizzas can be picked up at. The deal is only valid at locations owned by Flynn Restaurant Group — which happens to be Pizza Hut's largest franchisee and which owns 10 other Pizza locations in Gwinnett County. In addition to the Buford location, Flynn Restaurant Group also owns locations in Sugar Hill, Suwanee, Auburn, Dacula, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross and Snellville. It also owns 15 other locations in metro Atlanta, including stores nearby cities such as Cumming, Flowery Branch, Hoschton and Alpharetta. Other limitations on the free pizza for a year offer customers only being able to use it to get two complimentary specialty pizzas or up to three topping large pizzas per month for a year, a limit of one pizza per party, it only being valid on carryout orders, and it only being valid on Thin N' Crispy, original pan and hand tossed crusts. The new store is expected to add 15 new jobs to the Buford and Sugar Hill area. Now in its seventh decade of delivering compelling performances all over the world, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre — recognized by Congress as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World” — will make its return to Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre for a series of shows in mid-February. Led by artistic director Robert Battle, the Ailey troupe will showcase premiers, new productions and repertory favorites for five performances February 16-19 as part of a 22-city North American tour. While each performance will feature different choreographed works — including pieces by Kyle Abraham, Jamar Roberts and Twyla Tharp — each presentation will conclude with the stirring Ailey-choregraphed “Revelations,” which made its debut in 1960 and has been seen by more people than any other modern dance work. Ailey's Fox Theatre residency begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 with Tharp's 1997 piece “Roy's Joys,” a new production of the 1986 production of “Survivors,” Ailey's tribute to Nelson and Winnie Mandela, and “Revelations.  Tickets, starting at $29, are available at the Fox Theatre box office at 660 Peachtree St., or by calling 855-285-8499 or visiting www.alvinailey.org or www.foxatltix.com. The arts in Gwinnett made great strides in 2022 to return to the pre-COVID world, where more than one nonprofit was overjoyed to find their doors still open. As a result, the vitality and pure joy of being back on stage or opening gallery doors was evident in the work art lovers could again absorb. Below are just a few of the highlights that made this writer smile in 2022. There were so many great performances, great exhibitions, great moments that it is hard to choose. Spring was an exciting time for Gwinnett performing arts groups and audiences. ♦ Live Arts Theatre has been nurturing and growing talent for many years. In March, their efforts were enhanced when LAT Actor Rodney Johnson won Best Performer for his work in the play “Sea Wall” at both the Southeastern Theatre Conference and the Georgia Theatre Conference. ♦ The Aurora Theatre was the venue April 2-3 when Atlanta's amazing “Dance Canvas” highlighted the work of seven emerging choreographers. Dance Canvas' Founder and Director, Angela Harris, has a special relationship with the Aurora, having danced in a number of their productions over the years. ♦ Spring was also celebrated by the joining of two of the Southeast's premiere Barber Shop Choruses. Gwinnett's lauded Stone Mountain Chorus and Atlanta Harmony Celebration joined their voices together in a concert at Mountain Park's United Methodist Church on May 21. ♦ Also in May, Duluth photographer Mary Buck traveled to Spain and returned with another treasure trove of images. Buck is known for her extraordinary photos of birds, whether taken in her own backyard or on the other side of the world. Art Beat columns of summer and early fall seemed to be full of young, talented Gwinnett dancers finding success. ♦ Rachael Graham was once a featured performer at Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. Since this summer, she has sported a number of tiaras, dancing and singing as Disney Princesses on their Cruise Line in the Caribbean. ♦ Dreams came true for another ex-Gwinnett Ballet dancer. Runako Campbell is living the dream in New York City where she has performed in a variety of shows, commercials, and with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. ♦ The Hudgens Center is one of Gwinnett's treasured arts entities, and The Hudgens Prize is a great example of how philanthropy can lift emerging artists into the spotlight. This year's winner is sculptor Olu Amoda who received the Prize with its $50,000 cash gift in October. ♦ “The Lion in Winter” was presented in early December by Lionheart Theatre, directed by Brandi Kilgore. Taking on such a renowned and powerful work is a true artistic test and certainly a highlight of Lionheart's season. As 2022 comes to a close, one more young artist is spreading wings and flying into her future. ♦ By the new year, 10-year-old Lillian Sears, who has trained at Duluth's Atlanta Professional Dance Academy, will begin studying at the Paris Opera Ballet. She is the first North American to be accepted into the POB's six-month audition program. Dreams do come true. Here's to 2023! Grayson's girls basketball team defeated Archbishop Chapelle (La.) 58-22 Thursday in the championship game of the St. Pius Christmas Classic. The Rams went 3-0 in the tournament, improving to 10-4 on the season. Tatum Brown was named tournament MVP, and Samara Saunders earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The Rams are back at home Friday where they'll open the New Year with a game against Brookwood. Georgia saw its population increase by 1.7% between 2020 and 2022, new numbers from the Census Bureau show. As of July 1, Georgia's population stood at more than 10.9 million, up from about 10.7 million at the same time in 2020. The Peach State's neighbor to the south, Florida, saw its population increase at a higher rate of 3% during the same timeframe, Census numbers show. South Carolina (2.9%), North Carolina (2.4%) and Tennessee (1.8%) also grew more than the Peach State, though Georgia has a higher population than the three states. However, Georgia's growth outpaced that of Alabama, which saw its population increase by 0.9%. Woodard co-starred in Lifetime's hit remake of Steel Magnolias, for which she was nominated for Screen Actors Guild and Emmy Awards, and won a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Ouiser. Most recently, she appeared in the acclaimed drama 12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen, and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, plus New Line's Annabelle, and the Netflix Original feature Juanita, as the title character. Somehow she also found time to star in Marvel'S Luke Cage as the diabolical Mariah Dillard, and she also appeared in the Apple series SEE, opposite Jason Momoa. Jackson. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her to his President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. As part of her work on the Committee, Woodard adopted several high poverty and under-performing public schools around the country. She is an active advocate for the arts in education, largely through her work on the Committee's "Turnaround Arts" initiative, which was launched in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Domestic Policy Council to narrow the achievement gap and increase student engagement through the arts. Now based in the Kennedy Center, Turnaround Arts is spurring the creativity, expanding the scholarship, nurturing the citizenship, and introducing possibility in the lives of 50,000 kids, while turning around 80 formerly 'at risk' schools nationwide. She says acting is her profession, but feels everyone's real job "is to learn how to love each other - in our households, in our communities," she has said. "We do that by working for justice."Woodard is unfazed by the glitz of celebrity, but is grateful for its opportunity to "get her to the mic".  She remains fueled by the values she learned growing up in Tulsa. In November 2014, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and took the opportunity to credit her parents in her acceptance remarks. Her parents, always mindful of the hardship of others, "planted the seed of humanity" in her as a child. "They allowed me artistic as well as personal freedom. They didn't say 'go out and conquer' or 'go out and accumulate,' they just said 'Go. Do it. Be it. Be yourself. Fill yourself all the way up, Alfre, and never, ever forget your neighbor.'"

On this week's episode, AFROFILES takes a deep dive into apartheid-era South Africa. Two of the most famous figures in the freedom struggle, Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, embodied distinct and contrasting visions of a post-apartheid future. To learn more about their marriage, Charlotte Bednarski sat down with South African scholar and writer Jonny Steinberg. He has written extensively on post-apartheid South Africa and the transition to democracy, and his prize-winning literature offers insight into the everyday lives of people navigating changing institutions and seeking justice. Dr. Steinberg's next book, entitled Nelson and Winnie: A Portrait of a Marriage, will be published in 2023.

April 27th is a significant date for two countries on the African continent, separated by more than 5,000 km across the Atlantic ocean. On this day, both Sierra Leone and South Africa celebrate emancipation from minority rule. For Sierra Leone, it was becoming freed from the British in 1961, and for South Africa, the end of apartheid in 1994, some several decades later.  The period between the moment of emancipation and the contemporary moment marking it has arguably become consequential for considering both country's fates. In Sierra Leone, that period has been longer as the idea of freedom was at the core of Sierra Leone's founding over two hundred years ago, and the contestation over the meaning of that concept shaped its political trajectory since. The capital, Freetown, was first founded in the late eighteenth century by British abolitionists. This would set up a unique relationship between Sierra Leone and the British empire. The colony sat at the head of the British colonial administration in West Africa, with a “westernized” black population fit to fill the ranks of the bureaucracy in its colonizing project. A negotiated independence, won without mass struggle, would leave the work of decolonization incomplete, and a series of coups and military dictatorships, would culminate in a devastating civil war between 1991 and 2002. Following that, Sierra Leone took on another epochal mark, becoming a “post-conflict state.” Other than a brief re-appearance to the world as one of the hardest hit places during the Ebola epidemic between 2013 and 2016, plus a general election in 2018, there has been little interest from the international media to https://www.diva-portal.org/smash/record.jsf?pid=diva2%3A618529&dswid=-848 (go deeper) into what's behind either the https://africasacountry.com/location/sierra-leone (successes and failures) of the Sierra Leonean national project. In South Africa, the fascination has often gone the other way—focusing on the country's  supposed peace. Indeed, the post-apartheid transition period when the African National Congress (ANC) spearheaded negotiations with the National Party are touted as remarkable for avoiding a collapse into civil war. But South Africa is extremely violent. As Africa Is A Country contributing editor Sisonke Msimang recently wrote for https://www.laphamsquarterly.org/democracy/nongolozas-ghost (Lapham's Quarterly), “After the historic 1994 elections that installed the ANC as the ruling party, there were hopes that the violence would end. Murders and rapes decreased in the years that immediately followed, but violent crime remained high. The gruesome statistics have once again begun to rise.” And while the mainstream South African media likes to portray this violence as cultural pathology, it too arises from deeper social and political realities, being most pronounced when citizens confront the post-apartheid state on its failures.  In this week's episode of AIAC Talk we're asking what liberation comes after independence. We are joined by Sisonke Msimang, Oluwaseun Babalola, and Ishmael Beah. https://www.sisonkemsimang.com/ (Sisonke) is a South African writer whose work is focused on race, gender, and democracy, and on top of writing for a range of international publications, she is the author of Always Another Country: A memoir of exile and home and The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela (2018). https://www.obabalola.com/ (Oluwaseun) is a Sierra Leonean-Nigerian-American filmmaker; she founded DO Global Productions, a video production company specializing in documentaries. Her focus is to create and collaborate on projects across the globe, while providing positive representation for people of color; and https://www.ishmaelbeah.com/ (Ishmael), born in Sierra Leone, is the New York Times bestselling author ofhttps://ishmaelbeah.com/books/a-long-way-gone/ ( A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier)...
