In this episode of the show we are finishing our January survey of the professional relationship between Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg and we are doing so with a double bill of Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential. Over the course of our chat you will hear us debate whether the critics were right about these movies or if they couldn't see the forest for the trees and whether it's appropriate to call these movies "movies" instead of cinematic TV pilots. We also talk about Iko Uwais 80s-throwback as an athlete-turned-actor, dramatic chops of stand-up comedians playing against titans of comedic flair, John Malkovich with hair and much more! Show Notes First days on the job don't get much worse than this one – Iko Uwais stars in the pure action film The Raid: Redemption. Cops go into a tenement building and have to fight their way out facing off against an army of desperate people and unhinged gangsters. Once we get in, the only way out is through. Martial arts you probably have never seen alongside bonkers gunfights leaves us exhausted by the end. Directed by Gareth Evans and starring the talented Iko Uwais, this cult classic redefined action cinema. In this episode, your hosts discuss why The Raid is one of the most jaw-dropping, action films ever released. Directed by Scott Waugh, Expend4bles is the action/adventure film and fourth installment in The Expendables franchise, following The Expendables 3 (2014). Luke and Jae catch up on the 2023 movie where old blood met new blood, in this action packed ensemble which includes Jason Statham, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, Andy Garcia, and Sylvester Stallone. Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world's last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give "new blood" a whole new meaning.
Weiterlesen »
Is Scott Adkins the natural successor to Jean-Claude Van Damme? Why did Andrew Koji almost quit acting only months before landing the lead role in the beloved kung fu series, Warrior? And can we expect a rematch between Indonesian action stars Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais? The answers to these questions and many more are revealed in Best of Actors, one of three compilation shows released simultaneously to celebrate the 100th episode of this podcast, which started life back in 2016. Over three episodes, I share some of my favourite conversations recorded over the last eight years of the show. On this episode, you will hear from: Cynthia Rothrock, the undisputed queen of martial arts movies, who discusses her feelings about being a role model for women in action cinema and the martial arts; Andrew Koji, the British actor whose career has gone from strength to strength after securing the lead role in the Warrior TV show, inspired by the writings of Bruce Lee; Scott Adkins, who has made five appearances on the show since its inception, who discusses his career highlights including receiving awards in China from Jackie Chan; Michiko Nishiwaki, the Japanese bodybuilder who became an action star during the golden age of Hong Kong action cinema in the 1980s and 90s; and Joe Taslim, Indonesian judo champion and one of the biggest names in modern martial arts cinema, whose films include The Raid, The Night Comes for Us, and Mortal Kombat. If you enjoyed this 'best of' compilation episode, remember to check out Best of Directors and Best of Stunts, which have also dropped at the same time as this episode. Gemeinsam mit Tino Hahn (u.a.

Expend4bles is the epitome of milking an idea dry. It's lazy, visually a mess, and its narrative is almost completely nonsensical. Worse, like the third entry in the series, Expend4bles doesn't seem to grasp what made people interested in its concept in the first place. We lose even more of the action stars we all love and replace them with even less interesting people. Sure, this one returns the R rating, but the blood and carnage are swallowed by the horrific green screen and ludicrous plot. Its greatest offense, though, may be its complete waste of the talents of Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais. If you have two of Asia's great action stars in your movie, then back up and let them make magic. Sly Stallone, who created the franchise and has served as its main star, is so disinterested in the proceedings that he's barely in the movie; when he is, he mostly sits alone in random vehicles. Exend4bles is wholly deserving of its seven Razzie Nominations and complete implosion at the box office. And, yet, I still love it. Damn you, nostalgia! Now, sit back, toast to Barney's memory with a Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale from North Coast Brewing Co., and equip your prescription scope! Those burly boys known as The Expendables are back almost a decade after their last outing in Expendables 3 (2014). We were definitely not going to cover Expend4bles, but then it scored a remarkably low 13% on Rotten Tomatoes, which made it essential viewing. The cast is getting downright geriatric, with a 77-year-old Sylvester Stallone, a 65-year-old Dolph Lundgren, and a 67-year-old Andy Garcia all trying to pull off some late-career stunts. Jason Statham does the heavy lifting in the action department, and he's lazily supported by Randy Couture, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, and Iko Uwais. This movie bombed hard for many reasons, which we will illuminate in this Hawt Take!
This week, we get down and dirty with Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, Scott Adkins and a million other martial arts stars as we review Jesse V. Johnson's "B-movie Expendables." I talk about how you can come at this film from two different angles, Devan gives her opinion on who the best actor in the film is and Cyrus remains adamant about his very particular opinion of the movie. Later, we answer listener questions and I am forced to reveal what might be the most embarrassing thing I've ever said on the podcast. Enjoy!

TOTAL MASSACRE kicks off Netflix Month in anticipation of Rowan canceling Netflix with THE NIGHT COMES FOR US, an utterly brutal Indonesian action film from Timo Tjahjanto starring Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais of THE RAID. We talk meat hooks, fast punches, broke bones (human), grenades, sniper rifles, broken bones (inhuman), lesbians, kukri, pool balls, and also like, emotions and structure and how this film should be playing in hotel rooms late at night but can't because Netflix.
What director Liam O'Donnell has done with the Skyline movie franchise (Skyline, Beyond Skyline, Skylines) to my knowledge is - seriously - unprecedented in film history. This is a franchise where the first film was financially successful but was not well received by critics or audiences and Liam and his team somehow managed to make 2 excellent sequels well received by critics and audiences and now Liam is making a fourth film. If you have any interest in filmmaking, movies with Iko Uwais, Frank Grillo movies, sci-fi movies, special effects, or behind the scenes, I strongly encourage you to listen to this episode.Liam also has his own podcast, Action For Everyone.Trying to figure out, "What should I stream tonight?" This week, Gavin and I are FINALLY tackling our first Bollywood picture, the 2016 action/martial arts epic- Baaghi. Starring the insanely talented Tiger Shroff, this film is an amalgamation of both Bollywood and Hong Kong cinema, giving us a modern day ‘gongfupian' in the least expected place. Switching out Chinese martial arts with the ancient Indian fighting art of Kalaripayattu, the rest of the movie borrows many classic elements of the traditional Kung Fu flick, while simultaneously paying homage and making references to international martial arts cinema from around the world. Finding inspiration from Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and even the Karate Kid, the film manages to put its own special touch on the genre through its blending of musical sequences, romantic comedy, and hard-hitting, bone-crushing action! This is thanks mostly to the out of this world abilities of lead Tiger Shroff, whose kicks must be seen to be believed! Listen in as we dissect this over-the-top action extravaganza, share what we liked about it, and why you should give it a chance! Don't forget to subscribe, download, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!
Our first Marky Mark flick is a tale of the world's most misunderstood spec ops team. I cannot overstate how much that they are misunderstood, because their decision making is absolute garbage. Marky Mark is a gigantic asshole who yells at his team, eventually gets them all killed, and like a complete sociopath instantly shrugs it off like he forgot his umbrella in a cab. All told, its a straightforward action flick with one amazing redeeming quality...our man...IKO UWAIS
Suit up for 3 awesome movies from director Gareth Evans featuring the bone breaking ballet that is Silat. From the shockingly mature elegance of Mertantau to the bonkers maximalism of The Raid movies, Evans and his muse, Iko Uwais, present us with some of the most brutal and innovative fight choreography ever put on film. MOVIES DISCUSSED: MERANTAU (2009) THE RAID: REDEMPTION (2011) THE RAID 2 (2014)
It's the third week of Thankful For Action November and we're getting one step closer to the edge or we're about to break FACES with The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2. These movies made Iko Uwais a household name (in my house at least) and are often considered to be some of the best action films of the last 20 years... Or are they? We're digging in hard with the two Raid movies with possibly our longest episode yet. For sure it's the longest episode without Josh trying to pretend that he knows a thing about philophy. We're talking about movies that may make you become so numb from over-the-top action that in the end it doesn't even matter what carnage you've witnessed. Most important of all we decide if the Raid and the Raid 2 are... BLOODY GOOD FILMS.and remember... Ten years ago, Gareth Evan's fists-and-fury action thriller busted out of Indonesian theaters and took the world by storm. Showcasing the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat, the film garnered international recognition for its stars Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim, praise for its frenetic, claustrophobic style, and imitation from films like 2015's Dredd. Retitled The Raid: Redemption for American cinemas, the film won the Midnight Madness People's Choice Award at Toronto International Film Festival and spawned a 2014 sequel. As we get ready for fall, it's a long way down from the top floor for THE RAID! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. The Raid (2011) is everything you can ask for an a perfect action film. It the reason we love choreography in film and brought it to our attention as to how important it is in film production. On this episode, the boys travel to Indonesia and find themselves in the middle of an unsanctioned police "RAID" on a drug den run by the ruthless drug lord Tama Riyadi! However, this is no ordinary drug den, but a fortified apartment complex filled with hard fighting criminals with their own brand of brutality. Add in some family drama and you have a martial arts movie for the ages? Or do you? Will this one rate as some high flying action, or a low blow to the nuts?
The boys wonder about their own future retirements in both Asia and North America. Mox gives his review The Batman, while Izzy and Gibbs take on the recent Nicolas Cage film Willy's Wonderland (AKA Five Nights at Freddy's). We then review Mox's pick of Headshot, an Iko Uwais (from The Raid + The Night Comes For Us) film which is ..mostly disliked by the crew. Look up the fights on YouTube, it'll save you time!
Brother Drew voted for another Iko Uwais movie so he and Eric discuss The Night Comes for Us. There is a lot of stuff packed into this Indonesian martial arts film. Housekeeping starts at 42:02 when Eric discusses a dental appointment and Drew recounts tales of his Hawaiian vacation including a tale of iPhone woe, a very Alaskan home maintenance issue, and a very Alaskan vehicle maintenance issue. Drew also recommends the podcast Plain English and discusses the movie No Time to Die, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mr and Mrs Smith, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Gareth Evans told us to try a new recording software, so the audio sounds a bit like we travelled to a low-tech island where the good Lord has been usurped by some kind of gauzy vineyard witchiness. Wait, maybe I'm getting some details confused. Dan Stevens, Kristine Froseth, Mark Lewis Jones, Lucy Boynton, Michael Sheen star in this long, complex horror film about the aforementioned actors having to band together to prevent Iko Uwais from getting to the top of the fertility goddess' high-rise… wait… Ok, I think I got confused again, either that or I just came up with a great movie pitch guest-starring Tony Jaa! This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan discover that there's actually an antidote to getting punched really, really hard. The cultural divide proves too much for Ryan in this wild, fantastic, hallucinatory Kung Fu epic of many names. The story is incomprehensible, the fights are nonsensical, but Steve still finds it defensible, while Ryan finds the editing reprehensible. There's no reason for this rhyme. Kung Fu Cult Master (1993) d. Jing Wong, Sammo Kam-Bo Hung Starring: Jet Li Man Cheung Chingmy Yau Set during the Yuen Dynasty, many sects compete for possession of the two golden swords which contain the secret to dominance of the world of martial arts. The first faction, led by Shaolin, consists of Shaolin, Wu Tang, Ngo Mai, Kun Lun, Hung Tung and Wah Shan. The second is the Ming Sect, otherwise known as the Fire Sect or Evil Sect, led by branch leaders Queen of Purple Dragon, King of White Eagle, King of Gold Lion and King of Green Bat. A student of Wu Tang, befriends Gold Lion and marries the daughter of White Eagle. He is killed for the secret of the location of the missing sword. His infant son witnesses this and vows revenge on the heads of the sect. Unfortunately he has a jinx which prevents him from learning martial arts.
