The Top 100 Project

Have You Ever Seen's 656th podcast begins our 3rd (Annual, probably?) Revenge Month and Oldboy's plot o' vengeance is particularly sinister. Park Chan-wook's sadistic South Korean thriller has several unforgettable moments, including the one-take hallway hammer fight and the shocking, blood-soaked climax. Choi Min-sik is quite terrific in the lead role, an ordinary man who's forced to live in the solitude of a private prison for 15 years, not even knowing why. He loses his freedom, his family and nearly his mind. Once he's unexpectedly let out, he goes on a vicious rampage as he tries to figure out who locked him up and why...only to finally learn the reason in an "I never saw THAT coming" twist. So get your fried dumplings and live octopus ready to eat while you also try to avoid various forms of mouth trauma as Ryan solos on a podcast about Oldboy. Sparkplug Coffee is our sponsor. Odcinek powstał we współpracy z Velvet Spoon, dystrybutorem odrestaurowanej wersji filmu.

Lucy is a 2014 English-language French science fiction action film[5] written and directed by Luc Besson for his company EuropaCorp, and produced by his wife, Virginie Besson-Silla. It is an English-language film shot in Taipei, Paris, and New York City. It stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik, and Amr Waked. Johansson portrays the titular character, a woman who gains psychokinetic abilities when a nootropic, psychedelic drug is absorbed into her bloodstream. The film was released on 25 July 2014 and became a massive box office success,[6] grossing over $469 million worldwide, more than eleven times the budget of $40 million. It received generally positive, but also polarized, critical reviews. Although praise was given for its themes, visuals, and Johansson's performance, many critics found the plot nonsensical, especially its focus on the ten percent of the brain myth and resulting abilities.[6][7][8] Lucy is an American studying in Taipei, Taiwan. Her new boyfriend Richard tricks her into working as a drug mule for a South Korean drug lord, and she delivers a briefcase containing four packets of the highly valuable synthetic drug CPH4 to Mr. Jang. After witnessing Richard being shot and killed, she is captured and a bag of the drug is forcibly sewn into her abdomen in order to transport the drug to Europe. While in captivity, she is kicked in the stomach, breaking the bag and releasing a large quantity of the drug into her system. She acquires increasingly enhanced physical and mental capabilities, such as telepathy, telekinesis, mental time travel, and the ability to feel no pain. She also becomes both ruthless and emotionless. Using her new abilities, she kills her captors and escapes. Plot[edit]

DIABOLICAL: Evil Schemes Done Better

“A haiku?” Fighting their way past a load of goons, down a narrow corridor, the panel of peril struggle to make any headway. Finally finishing off the last of the lads (no laughing at the back there!), they slump in their chair exhausted and watch this week's film Oldboy (Park Chan-wook, 2003). Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is a bit of a d-bag. A drunken, irresponsible, womanising d-bag, to be specific. When he is inexplicably locked up in a single room for 15 years, by a cash-rich lad named Lee Woo-jin (Yoo Ji-tae) as it turns out, he changes his ways and becomes a stoic killing machine. Why was he imprisoned, and just how does new flame Mi-do (Kang Hye-jeong) fit into this intricate puzzle? Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBNBpNcuQHI ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Turns out that during their time at Evergreen, Dae-su started a scurrilous rumour that Woo-jin was having an incestuous affair with his own sister Soo-ah (Yoon Jin-seo). That rumour snowballed to the point that Soo-ah took her own life and led her broken-hearted brother on a path of long game vengeance. To tell all would be a spoiler too far. Who will come out on top of this tragic tussle and what will be left of them? Just what did the panel think of this week's movie, pray tell? How can they improve upon Woo-jin's deliberate machinations? This week we are discussing the first Korean film many western audiences saw, Oldboy (올드보이, 2003), including its roots in film noir, Shakespeare, and Greek tragedy, the visceral violence, the consuming nature of revenge, teeth, mirrors, hammers, octopuses, the ending, and much more! Oldboy (Korean: 올드보이; RR: Oldeuboi; MR: Oldŭboi) is a 2003 South Korean neo-noir psychological action thriller film[4][5] directed and co-written by Park Chan-wook. A loose adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name, the film follows the story of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), who is imprisoned in a cell which resembles a hotel room for 15 years without knowing the identity of his captor nor his captor's motives. When he is finally released, Dae-su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and violence. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls in love with an attractive young sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa Indy eating octopus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abWPlsI6SO8&ab_channel=IndyRandhawa

Grace goes off about how much she hates Disney+ productions of K-dramas which hog all the good actors but put them in terrible shows made by inexperienced filmmakers who don't have a sense of TV pacing. Disney+ and Kang Yoon-sung's greatest offense when creating Big Bet is making a series that lacks heart. It lacks everything that makes a good K-drama like moving storytelling, romance, compelling characters, high emotional stakes, a TV rhythm, and a female K-drama screenwriter whose written at least fifty TV scripts already. Big Bet also lied to Grace by declaring Son Suk-ku a featured actor on the series but only shows up starting the very tail end of episode 5, and she has a few thoughts on that.

In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's Sports Movie Month, Trevor introduces Kyle to Ryoo Seung-wan's boxing drama, Crying Fist (2005)! A hitting hitting, dual perspective narrative following the exploits of a washed up amateur boxer (Choi Min-sik) and young, hardscrabble street tough (Ryoo Seung-bum), the film is an exceptional and unconventional sports drama. Equal parts depressing and uplifting, the film is bolstered by a pair of truly outstanding performances from it's pair of lead actors, both in their ability to emote and carry the drama of the film, but also in their ability to ably perform the incredibly brutal and realistic boxing sequences. Highly recommended if you're able to find a way to watch it.

Next Time Our next mini-season is vampire films, and we kick off with 1922's seminal NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR. This is worth reading, thinking about the idea of cinematic claustrophobia — as Rob mentions when talking about the way this film is shot. Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective

In what may become a routine feature, we do a foreign film from South Korea that has a bit of a cult following in the US, I Saw the Devil. This one is timely as the Olympics are currently taking place there and has plenty on offer. It's a story of revenge where the aggrieved party takes justice into their own hands, and fights fire with fire, becoming the monster he is hunting. Bonus Track: La maravillosa pieza The searchers después del tema de Woo Jin, Cries and Whispers.
