Video version of this interview: https://youtu.be/blLciT0egb4Jessica Roda just published the book "For Women and Girls Only" on Orthodox Jewish women's performances. You can find her book here: https://amzn.to/4jKRJgjIn this long form discussion we talk about what's happening in the scene of Orthodox Jewish women's performances. Because of modesty rules, women are not allowed to perform in front of men. So oftentimes their reach is limited. In Roda's work, she charts how women's perfomances has become a whole economy thanks to the internet and women's creative ways of approaching the Kol Isha issue.Check out Jessica's book and Jessica on Instagram and Twitter:https://x.com/RodaJesshttps://www.instagram.com/jess_roda/ This interview is brought to you with the support of Fairfield University. Mainstream portrayals of ultra-Orthodox religious women often frame their faith as oppressive: they are empowered only when they leave their community. For Women and Girls Only: Reshaping Jewish Orthodoxy Through the Arts in the Digital Age (NYU Press, 2024), by Jessica Roda, flips this notion on its head. Drawing on six years of fieldwork between New York and Montreal, Roda examines modern performances on the stage and screen directed by and for ultra-Orthodox women. Their incredibly vibrant Jewish artistic scenes defy stereotypes that paint these women as repressed, reclusive to their shtetl (village), and devoid of creativity and agency. For Women and Girls Only argues that access to technology has completely transformed how ultra-Orthodox women express their way of being religious and that the digital era has enabled them to create an alternative entertainment market outside of the public, male-dominated one. Because expectations surrounding modesty, ultra-Orthodox women do not sing, dance, or act in front of men and the public. Yet, in a revolutionary move, they are creating “women and girls only” spaces onsite and online, putting the onus on men to shield themselves from the content. They develop modest public spaces on the Internet, about which male religious leaders are often unaware. The book also explores the entanglement between these observant female artists and those who left religion and became public performers. The author shows that the arts expressed by all these women offer a means of not only social but also economic empowerment in their respective worlds. Interviewee: Jessica Roda is Assistant Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. A number of people in the crowd outside the event were seen holding "Save Women's Sports" posters, while others touted messages like "Girls' Sports for Girls Only" and "Support Fair Sports." So electrified to have The Key of F on Produced By a Girl Podcast!! Not only are Andie and Marie a powerhouse rock band duo they are also industry natives rocking it with their powerful vocals and rock for everyone to get lost in an audio journey of rock power reminding me of Slater Kinney. Tune in to their post and read more of their bio below!! The Key of F front woman, Andie K, has been singing since she was a toddler. Just recently learning to read music, Andie solely relied on her ear to pick up and learn harmonies and melodies. An Orlando native, she’s performed for Disney, Universal, the a-cappella group 4 Girls Only, and backing vocals for the cover band Motown Madness . Andie’s vocal style was heavily influenced by Lucia Cifarelli of KMFDM, Joan Jett, and Danyell Souza. Marie has been playing piano since she could read, and guitar since her arms were long enough to go around one. But singing, songwriting, and harmonizing are her true loves. She grew up singing in choirs, and while living in Houston, she performed with the goth band Sinister Sirens. After moving to Los Angeles, Marie began writing and performing comedy acoustic songs, and played on Pauly Shore's TV show, "Minding the Store." Andie moved to Los Angeles and met Marie. The two immediately clicked and began singing together, which led to them writing their own songs. With an eclectic blend of musical tastes, Marie and Andie are creating new music, with hints of classic rock, punk, goth, hard rock, and even a dash of rockabilly! Mental Health Struggles hit the best of us, including stacks of our favourite musicians, which is why we turn to their music as an avenue to help us feel better momentarily before we look at other professional options and one bloke who has been fighting his own battles and sharing those struggles with us through his music is Frank Carter of Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, who joins the podcast this week to chat about his personal life and to pass on the important reassurance that there's always hope at the end of it all. Dark clouds pass and this is something we all need to take into account when going through rough patches. Podcast host Browny also addresses Frank's inspirational "Girls Only" moshpit movement which he will be doing at every single show he performs at following the praise he received from fans when it made global headlines at Reading Festival back in August. He's also got a very important message for those who criticise the movement and you know what, we couldn't back him any more than what we already do. We also take a look at last week's ARIAs Nominees and play New Music from Dream State, WAAX and Simple Plan, throwbacks from Clowns, Marmozets, Violent Soho, Royal Blood and heaps more... #WoSUATW #FrankCarter #AndTheRattlesnakes #EndOfSuffering #RoyalBlood #Marmozets #68 #Clowns #WAAX #VolentSoho #Tired Lion #DreamState #PrimrosePath #SimplePlan #EnterShikari #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

Tzivia Kay was born in the Former Soviet Union, Uzbekistan, in the city of Tashkent in 1983, and was raised in a Secular Russian speaking Jewish home. Tzivia remembers demanding for pen and paper and making up songs in her backyard since early childhood. “As a child, I remember dancing around the trees in my backyard and composing my own songs. I pretended to be a singer on stage.” Tzivia foresaw herself on a big stage and knew that she would become an Artist one day. In 1993, Tzivia and her whole family migrated to New York, where she grew extremely nostalgic for her former country and friends. She kept writing songs and poems in her native language, “I wrote my first song in Russian on a sheet of paper and repeatedly sang it over. I called my friends and shared it with them. To my surprise it was a big hit in my neighborhood.” At around 14, Tzivia felt very comfortable to express herself in English and started composing songs and poems in English as well as in Russian. Today, Tzivia Kay is a bilingual Poet, Singer, Songwriter, Actress, Inspirational Speaker, Parodist, Artist, Producer and a Performer for Women and Girls Only. Tzivia writes inspirational songs to bring herself, her family and others closer to God. Tzivia Kay released her first CD Album, “Tell Me Why?” in November, 2014 and is currently working on her second Album. Tzivia enjoys working and inspiring all Jewish Communities. However, her main focus remains Outreach as she herself became Baal Tshuva and can highly relate to the Kiruv Community, hoping to make a difference in people's lives by bringing them closer to Hashem. “I had a spiritual wakeup call and realized that my mission is to exalt G-d through my poetry, songs and art.” Youtube Website iTunes Instagram Facebook
