This message features short clips from the critically acclaimed film The Covenant, which was released in theaters in 2023 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. No copyright is claimed for The Covenant, and we assert that use of the short clips within this sermon is permissible under fair use principles in U.S. copyright law. Liquid Church is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, specifically, a non-denominational Christian Church, and the purpose of using this media is non commercial in nature. The movie The Covenant tells the story of a US Military Leader and his Afghan interpreter during the war in Afghanistan. This movie is fascinating, because in some ways this relationship mirrors our relationship with God. It begins as transactional, but in the end, it looks a lot more like a covenant. In this message, Pastor Bryan Roe challenges us by asking three questions to assess our relationship with God. #1) Whose intel are you trusting? Are you trusting what the world says or what the Word says? Are you following your heart or following your Savior? You must place your trust in God. #2) Where do you turn for rescue? We all have something, someone, or somewhere we turn to when the going gets tough. What is it for you? Is it drinking, gossiping, or binge-eating? How do you numb yourself? Spoiler - you can't rescue yourself. Turning to God should be your first response, not your last resort. #3) Does God have a hook in you? How does God's grace compel you to act? How does it drive your sense of purpose? Here's the bottom line: Don't waste another minute doing life apart from Jesus. If he gave his life to die for you, give your life to live for him. Watch this message from Pastor Bryan Roe, and discover what a relationship with Jesus truly looks like. #LiquidChurch #TheCovenant #TrustInGod #RelationshipWithGod #Rescue #AHookInYou #AtTheMovies #Jesus #Christianity #ChristianChurch

Have you ever had a profound experience while watching a movie? When you were so overwhelmed by emotion that you could call it spiritual? In his book Seeing Is Believing: The Revelation of God Through Film (IVP, 2022), theologian Richard Vance Goodwin argues that such experiences may sometimes be encounters with God. He explores how certain films use various visual strategies to invite viewers to feel emotions that may open them up to God's presence. Check out The Arts & Faith Top 100 Films Films mentioned in this podcast: Magnolia 2001: A Space Odyssey Silent Light The Tree of Life The Fountain Hail, Caesar! Dr. Richard Goodwin is adjunct assistant professor of theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is also Academic Director of Teaching and Learning at Pathways College of Bible and Mission in New Zealand. Richard's doctorate explored the intersection of theology and film, the thesis of which served as the basis for this book. Prior to that, he completed an MA in Theology through Fuller Seminary, which is just down the road from Hollywood with a track record of engagement with pop culture. Now as affiliate faculty at Fuller, he teaches classes in Theology and Pop Culture as well as Theology and TV. Richard lives in his native New Zealand with his wife and two sons. The base from which they approach this task is found in the belief that God is at work redeeming all things everywhere. If you watch and listen closely, popular movies and tv shows are exposing the deep seated questions of our time. This is an invitation into humanity's collective experience of life that has the potential to move us into deeper love for others and an increased hope in Jesus.Christians have traditionally had two major responses to popular culture: avoid completely (defensive), or embrace completely (assimilation). We want to offer a different way: meaningful engagement that leads to connection and change.
