The Academy has historically favored men when it comes to giving out its Oscars statuettes. Women are once again not only underrepresented among this year’s Best Picture nominees, but also fared worse than last year. Emily Taranelli analyzed how much female characters speak across the 10 nominated films, including top contenders like Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet. On Imperfect Paradise, Emily talks about her findings, why what female characters are saying on-screen matters, and what gender disparity in dialogue can tell us about the kinds of movies that are institutionally valued. The Worthy Boys are lying on the couch and confronting our past traumas, because Ordinary People won Best Picture at the 53rd Academy Awards! Robert Redford's directorial debut stunned Hollywood by beating out heavyweights like Raging Bull and The Elephant Man. But maybe it was the right call. Ordinary People didn't shout—it listened. It told the story of a family drowning in grief, trying—and failing—to connect. With devastating performances, restrained direction, and emotional honesty, the film resonated with audiences and critics alike. It went on to win four Oscars: Best Picture for producer Ronald L. Schwary, Best Director for Robert Redford, Best Supporting Actor for Timothy Hutton, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Alvin Sargent. Too quiet for some. Just right for others. What do you think—did Ordinary People deserve the crown?

It's here take on the the 97th Oscars Best Picture. What's that? The Oscars have already happened and you know who won? Well yeah, this episode was supposed to come out before the Oscars, but it hear now. So have a listen and see if we got our picks right for who would win. This is part of the Watchin/Talkin It 4 part weekend special. Which just means that somebody, not naming no names (Donnell) was behind.
If an adult film cleaning up at the Oscars with five Academy Awards isn't evidence of our debauched, fallen culture, nothing is. Jason reacts to the 2025 Oscars Best Picture winner, "Anora," with its dark storytelling and heavy porn tropes. Can't blame the Oscars for promoting this degenerate mindset when the red-pill community champions Andrew Tate. Suppose Andrew Tate is on camera bragging about pimping out and sexually exploiting women while simultaneously being viewed as a role model for nuclear masculinity. In that case, something is seriously wrong with our culture. Steve Kim joins the show a bit later to discuss "Tank" Davis' controversial knee in a majority draw fight versus Lamont Roach Jr. JuJu Watkins is becoming Los Angeles' next "Showtime" basketball figure. Riley Gaines' prayer for President Trump and his Cabinet at a NASCAR Cup Series race in Texas also makes headlines. Meanwhile, President Trump is working to completely pardon baseball legend Pete Rose for his gambling blemish. Will Rose finally be allowed to enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame? After an exciting sports weekend, "Fearless" brings you all the best stories you don't want to miss. Jacob and Aaron are Dune it again: forming their annual Conclave to dissect The Substance of this year's Oscar's nominees. They sing the praises of the Wicked-ly talented cast of Anora, but have some Brutal(ist) opinions on the music of Emilia Perez. Both find I'm Still Here to be one of the best of the year, but, Boy, if you had a Nickel for every time they talk about Scooby-Doo 2 instead, you'd have a lot of nickels. The reasons why are A Complete Unknown.
Hello, everybody! Welcome back to MOVIE Morning where, today, we'll be discussing the 2025 Best Picture nominees! More specifically, I'll be ranking them based off my preferences, NOT by how likely they are/were to win Best Picture at the OSCARS this year. This is always a really interesting ranking because these films are supposed to be the best of the year, but they rarely represent that for me personally. At the same time, there are very few Best Picture nominees that I actually dislike. So, how do I rank this year's Best Picture nominees? Find out in this episode! Make sure to let me know which one is your favorite on the Spotify Polls!

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing ORDINARY PEOPLE (1980), from the writers Alvin Sargent and Nancy Dowd (uncredited), from Judith Guest's novel, the film is directed by Robert Redford and garnered 4 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Writing/Screenplay based on Material from another Medium and Best Supporting Actor). Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton) struggles with the guilt of going on after a tragic accident claims the life of his older brother, as his mother (an electrifying Mary Tyler Moore) does her best to maintain the shattered illusion of a perfect family and his father (the late, great Donald Sutherland) tries to keep the family together. We started a poll that will run all week to see how many of these Oscars Best Picture nominees people have actually seen. YES Keyboardist Rick Wakeman called in, he's at the Colonial Theater Wednesday 3/15. In the office yesterday we started talking about weird random stuff we have memorized, so we found out what weird stuff you've also memorized over the course of your life.
We are just days away from the 95th Academy Awards, so there's no better time to discuss whether "Everything Everywhere All At Once" can follow its huge night at the SAG Awards and take the Oscar for Best Picture. Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan are all up for Oscars in the acting categories and the Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — are also nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. But before we dive into that, Bruce Miller gives his thoughts about the new movie "Cocaine Bear" and Terry Lipshetz discusses the new season of "The Mandalorian," getting caught up with "The Last of Us" and thoughts on Best Picture nominees "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once." REVIEW: It doesn't take a cartel to see how goofy 'Cocaine Bear' is Miller also has an interview with director Bobby Farrelly about his new movie "Champions" starring Woody Harrelson, which opens March 10. Farrelly and his brother Peter Farrelly — also known as the Farrelly Brothers — made a name for themselves with comedies like "Dumb and Dumber," "Kingpin" with Harrelson and "There's Something About Mary." Peter scored big with an Oscar win for "Green Book," which also created time for Bobby to do a solo project of his own with "Champions." We will be recording our next episode immediately after the Oscars so look for that in the early hours of Monday, March 13. The 2022 Oscars will forever go down as the day Will Smith non-jokingly slapped Chris Rock in the face on national television. Also, some people won awards and stuff! Todd, Lara, Andrea, and I provide fresh, initial thoughts on our feelings on the smack, the winners, the losers, and the films we will definitely be watching as a result. EPISODE NOTES: The following are the 2022 Oscars Best Picture nominations and our opinions on if you should watch: "Belfast" -- No one watched, but Todd and Andrea were interested. "CODA" *WINNER* -- Todd and Andrea agree that this was a worthy choice. "Don't Look Up" -- Lara and I disliked this movie very much. Andrea ended up falling asleep. "Drive My Car" -- No one watched, but Andrea heard from the one person she knew who had seen this film that it was a bit on the slow side. Apparently, they aren't driving that car fast. "Dune" -- Todd and Andrea LOVED this film. Both agree that I will probably not like it, but my love for Timothy Chalamet may win over. "King Richard" -- Todd and Lara loved this movie, and Lara and I will also watch it FOR SURE. "Licorice Pizza" -- No one has watched this, nor does anyone understand what it's about. I should also disclose that no one plans on watching this unless one of you tells us we should. "Nightmare Alley" -- Todd watched it and said we would not like it. But he did have it as an "I'll allow it" for Best Picture. That says a lot. "The Power of the Dog" -- Andrea watched it and said she would never watch it again. She understands why it was nominated, though. "West Side Story" -- We all watched it and thought it was terrific! Especially the non-depressing parts. Note: Also on our "to watch" list is: "Encanto" and "Free Guy." SHOW NOTES: Subscribe to Podcast: iTunes or Android Follow Me: Facebook and Instagram, and Twitter
