His teachings were firmly rooted in Greek philosophy, focusing on metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology. He lived and died long before the formation of the New Testament canon and the establishment of Christianity.Christian Doctrine of Revelation:In Christianity, divine revelation is believed to be delivered through the Scriptures—both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is considered the inspired word of God, revealing God's will, character, and plans for humanity. The New Testament, through the person and work of Jesus Christ, is seen as the fulfilment and continuation of this revelation.Authority of Scripture:Most Christians hold that the Bible, comprising both the Old and New Testaments, is the ultimate and complete revelation from God. Any authority to interpret or override biblical revelation is believed to come from God himself, not from human philosophers.Jesus Christ as the Ultimate Revelation:According to Hebrews 1:1-2, God's ultimate revelation to humanity is through Jesus Christ: "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe."Plato's Influence and Limitations:Plato may have influenced the intellectual environment that facilitated the spread of the gospel, especially through the Greek language and logical approaches. However, this influence does not equate to divine inspiration or authority. Plato's ideas, while sometimes seen as compatible with Christian thought, are part of secular philosophy rather than the divine narrative of the Bible. Conclusion:From an Evangelical and Christian Biblical perspective, Plato was a significant philosopher but not a Christian. He did not possess any divine authority to alter the revelation given in the Old Testament. The authority to reveal God's will is believed to rest solely with those who were divinely inspired to write the Scriptures—the prophets, apostles, and Christ himself. Please reach out with any comments or further question and I will tray and answer through these occasional short bonus "Snapcast", episodesSupport the Show.Jeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

Pastor Dan discusses the uncertainties and challenges in the world as we worship, serve, and learn together this Sunday. We will discuss conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, geopolitical instability, and societal distrust. We will realize, again, that despite the lack of safety in a fallen world, a Christian-Biblical worldview anchored in faith in Jesus Christ provides believers with a secure haven. We'll explore the contrast between God, who brings order and love, and the Enemy, characterized by deceit and chaos. We'll be reminded of God's eternal perspective and will be reminded that believer's struggles are not unique and that we can trust in the Lord amid uncertainties. We'll be reminded of the transformative impact of our assurance of eternal life through Christ, infusing our lives with purpose and resilience, and calling us to actively contribute goodness to the world while resisting evil's destructive forces.

The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

The sages are largely consistent with the assertion that we are love itself and so is God. Indeed, they describe how a separation between the love that we are and the love that God is doesn't exist, although we may often feel or believe this way. Our tendency to get invested in our sense of having a limited form, a limited story, a limited way of thinking and observing of “outside things” keeps us from seeing this truth. The thing that sees these seeming limitations is not itself limited, and how do we know it is not a shared “field of consciousness”? We are one in God – this is also the truth we hear from Jesus Christ. And yet, even knowing this, when we hear the famous Christian Biblical quote of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life,” we interpret it from a place of division, believing that the “only Son” that we are to believe in is elsewhere and not already within us, as the love at our core.

The broad definition of Conversion Therapy in Canada's Bill C-4 makes it illegal for Pastor and Ministers to call people to repentance and to change their ways. According to a letter sent to Grace To You earlier this year "The Bill will amend the Criminal Code in Canada to ban conversion therapy. It will criminalize, among other things, “causing another person to undergo conversion therapy; promoting or advertising conversion therapy”. (https://www.gracechurch.org/news/posts/2307) There are similar laws being passed all over the United States and before you know our own congress will go all in making it illegal to teach what the Word of God says on the matters of sexuality. It is time for the Church to rise up to the occassion. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/i61-exploits/message

Biblical Worldview The story of the world can be told with FOUR WORDS representing four plot moves. All worldviews must deal with the questions that are raised in these four plot moves. Plot Move #1 Creation. This tells us how things began, where everything came from (including us). Who made the world? Where did we come from? Plot Move #2 Rebellion. This describes the problem. What went wrong with the world? What is wrong with us? Plot Move #3 Redemption. This gives us the solution, the way to fix what went wrong. What is God doing to fix our world? What is God doing to fix us? Plot Move #4 Restoration. This explains what the world will look like once the repair takes place. How does it all resolve eventually? Will we become what God intended? Two Major Worldviews Summarized Biblical Worldview: A Biblical Worldview says that God is the Author of our universe, that we are accountable to Him, and that we have hope of being a part of His grand story to triumph over all evil in our world through Jesus. You see, Christians believe that there's a larger story going on in human history; that there is a God and He made all that we see and know, including human-beings and it was perfect; that something went wrong in the world because of our rebellion prompted by the Evil One; that God has initiated a plan to fix this mess and that Jesus' coming was promised way back in Genesis 3:15; that I am part of His plan to restore this world to all that He intended for it; that as I live a life He endorsed and as I struggle to make sense of all the suffering in this fallen world, somehow Christ's takes shape in me and uses me to give hope to the broken. That's a Christian Biblical worldview in summary form. Secular Worldview: A Secular Worldview says that we have no Author, that we are not accountable to anyone, and there are no ideals or grand story's of redemption. The prevailing post-modern story is this: “Once upon a time, there were no big stories, only local ones. So don't pretend you know the big story of the world because you might start to believe yourself and therefore begin oppressing people who disagree with your story.” Since we are on our own, we should seek all the gratification and satisfaction we can now. Each individual is free to create a belief system that works for them. And then at death – full stop. Life is over. We cease to exist. So, in this worldview, we are marooned on a pale blue dot in a possibly endless cosmos. We are unnoticed, insignificant, and on our own. Humans have huge problems and may not be able to ever overcome them. And there is no hope beyond the grave. Which worldview do you want to shape your life and the lives of your children and grandchildren? What you believe about yourself and your worth and value ties directly to your worldview. Biblical Worldview The story of the world can be told with FOUR WORDS representing four plot moves. All worldviews deal with these four plot moves that describe the Story of the World and how the world began, why the world is the way it is, what role we play in the drama and how all the plotlines of the Story are resolved in the end. Plot Move #1 Creation. This tells us how things began, where everything came from (including us). Who made the world? Where did we come from? The world God made was good. The secular worldview says that we are a random product of time and chance not a personal creator. Plot Move #2 Rebellion. This describes the problem. What went wrong with the world? What is wrong with us? We don't start off neutral in life. We are born with a sin nature. We struggle to know and understand the truth. We are bent towards selfishness. The secular worldview says we are basically good and just need a better environment; that there has been no "rebellion" because there is no God that has established truth. Plot Move #3 Redemption. This gives us the solution, the way to fix what went wrong. What is God doing to fix our world? What is God doing to fix us? God never walked off and left us. He wants to restore you, beginning now. It has always been God's plan, not just to forgive you, but to restore you – to make you like Jesus. The secular worldview says our world will be redeemed through ecology and creation care; that's how we save the planet. And let's create a utopia and let socialism be the way that we solve the world's problems. Plot Move #4 Restoration. This explains what the world will look like once the repair takes place. How does it all resolve eventually? Will we become what God intended? Through Christ our world will be restored to what God had intended all along. We will all be what we were supposed to be. The secular worldview says that everything is physical and material and eventually, it will all decay into nothingness. Two Major Worldviews Summarized Biblical Worldview: A Biblical Worldview says that God is the Author of our universe, that we are accountable to Him, and that we have hope of being a part of His grand story to triumph over all evil in our world through Jesus. Key Takeaways: Money problems are not always money problems, often they're spiritual  Know, Believe, Do What you know shapes what you believe What you believe dictates what you do Debt is unavoidable for most for at least a season of life (even if it's just mortgage). Have a plan to free yourself that debt as soon as possible.  Christians struggle with the same money mindset issues as non-Christians ( jealousy, greed, lack of contentment and gratitude) From a Christian perspective, giving should be done out of a sense of joy, not obligation  Overspending often indicates an issue with contentment To be a successful CFO at Home, be humble, remember that family money management is a team effort Ways to contact/follow: Building Stewards Podcast  DonovanBrooks.com   Contact the Host - vince@thecfoathome.com

Yeshua the Messiah: The Renaissance of a Name Lost in Translation If there was a subject that evokes visceral emotions within the Christian faith, it is the Savior's contrived name known today as Jesus Christ. From the Eastern Orthodox to the Coptic, Catholic, and Syrian to the protestant and Anglocentric Evangelicals, the redeemer's name remains a thing of the divine mystery hidden in plain sight. The confusion over the Son of God's name renders Christianity indefensible because practitioners have made His name Theomorphic. However, the foundation upon which the Savior is crowned remains inalienable and unalterable. This claim comes straight from Isaiah 52:5-6 “…And my name is blasphemed continually every day. Therefore, my people shall know my name.” The Savior's name maintains consistency from the Old to the New Testament. First, Exodus chapter 3:6 proclaims, "I am the God of your fathers," and verse 14 says, "I AM that I AM sent you." Then, Isaiah 42:8 plainly states: "I am the LORD (Adonai) that is My name: And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images." In the New Testament, the incarnate Savior clarifies His name. In John 8:24, and 8:58, the Savior makes two declarations "For if you do not believe that "I am He" you will die in your sins" and "...before Abraham was, "I am." In these passages of the Scripture, the Lord's name harkens to His original declared name in Exodus and Isaiah (NKJV). The apostle Peter being well aware of the contentious power in the name of the Son of God declared in Acts 4:12, "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." The bewilderment surrounding the Christian Savior's real name demands an honest re-examination of His divine name. The primacy of extolling the Savior's real name rests in the Scripture's cardinal law of obedience to God's command. When contemporary theologians vehemently argue that the Savior's name is canonized and settled, they do so contemptuously against the command of God. The protestation that challenging Christian orthodoxy or textual nomenclature of the human-ascribed name runs afoul of the Christian Biblical inerrancy and infallibility is ludicrous. Non-Anglo-believers universally reject the notion that one biblical canon represents perfection. However, if we accept that God's truth sets humanity free, we must allow the Scripture as originally written in Hebrew to shine truth into our faith system. The name Yeshua represents the incarnate God 'Yahweh' (meaning Salvation). The renaissance of Yeshua's name bears witness to the indomitable power of God over established human order. The time has come for the spiritual discernment of God's wisdom to point the light back to the truth that Yeshua is the eternally given, immutable, and proclaimed the name of our Lord and Savior. The phrase "He who gives the name controls the narrative" rings loudly in this instance. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rev-louis-eke/support

Many believe that “God is in Control” is the Gospel truth. “Brother Rodriguez, that is what the Bible says!” Is it? If it is, then we are stuck with it. Maybe we should look at that idea a little closer before coming to a conclusion. Following is a verse interpreted to uphold the theology that God ultimately controls all leaders in human government. The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water; he turns it wherever he wants (Proverbs 21:1 NET). Many assume that verse means that all rulers are like puppets on a string, and God is the master puppeteer. That was never a Biblical view but one that originated in the beliefs about mythical gods and their treatment of mankind. Among these mythical gods, humans were like pawns in a game of otherworldly chess played by them. The gods set human fate according to their will. That same thinking infiltrated Christianity beginning in the second century. We could go into a lengthy discussion of how Greek pagan thought supplanted Jewish Messianic Biblical thought of the 1st century church in Jerusalem. I will spare you the details, but ideas prevalent in paganism about their mythological gods and their relationship with humanity had a deep impact on Christian Biblical interpretation as the church moved further west into pagan territory. Historically, the church to the west by the 3rd and 4th century would have been almost unrecognizable to Jesus, the apostles, and the churches that sprang up among the Jewish believers around Jerusalem and its vicinity. Anybody that has done research into the history of the church between the 1st and 4th century knows this to be true. (1) The idea that God is like a master puppeteer or a divine chess master in control of all human actions, and that all humans must bow to His will, was a part of heathen or pagan mythology. Pagan gods could force their will upon humans at their every whim. It did not matter if their will was immoral or unrighteous. Human beings had no choice in their fate. Whatever the gods willed was to be done even by unwilling humanity. That posited idea takes away from human beings all powers of decision and makes them automatons that are forcibly subject to the divine will. If God could do that with kings and government leaders, or any human being for that matter, why not do that with the unsaved on planet earth? Why not force everyone to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord, and mandate that everyone to go to heaven? We could start the Millennium tomorrow and get on with eternity if that were the case! That is not the case because human beings can choose their eternal destiny, and they have a choice in this life to serve or disobey God. The right to choose From the beginning, God gave people the right to choose, and it has never been rescinded. He commanded Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and that IF they did eat of the forbidden tree, then they would die (Genesis 2:17). God gave them a choice, but they chose the wrong thing and suffered the consequences. It was not God’s plan that they chose evil, but they did, and God respected their choice. If God was sovereign as people think, as in full control of all circumstances, why not rebuke the devil and stop sin in the garden? Why not stop the many millennia of the rule of darkness that perverted His creation and brought it a devastating curse? Many think that God created man to fail and sin. They believe that God in His sovereignty had some purpose in all this damnation and planetary misery. Really? Step back from religion and theology and hear that nonsense for what it is. “Sovereignty” and “God is in control” as taught in much of Christendom is a perverted and twisted traditional religious idea that makes God into an indiscriminate murderer and destroyer that somehow favors evils to strike mankind for some mysterious purposes. Those ideas make human beings into robotic servants subject to the “control” of the “programmer” (God). Let us get specific. Those that think that because of God’s sovereignty, He is control of all human actions, what then do you do with Hitler, Stalin, Mao, ISIS, and all the evil rulers, empires, and terrorist organizations that have plagued the planet? God would have to be worse than all of them if this human cesspool of evil and bondage were of His design and under His total control. The idea is so ludicrous and preposterous that only in churches will people believe that nonsense and utter stupidity. I do not have any nice words to describe the foolishness of the “God is in control of everything” crowd. God sent Jesus. Those that trust and follow Him (believe) will be saved, and those that do not will be damned (John 3:15-18, 36; 12:48; Mark 16:16, etc.). The choice between life and death, blessing or curses, love and hatred, and obedience or disobedience has always been among men. God has never taken it away, and never will! I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live (Deuteronomy 30:19 NKJV- See also Jeremiah 21:8 and ff., and Amos 5:14) Who has the choice to make? God? God is in control of whether we have life or death, blessing or cursing? No, human beings must choose. What is the problem? Many want it to be God's choice, but God has left it up to us as to what we choose. He does tell us to choose life because He wants us to live, but the ultimate choice is left to us as long as we are on the earth. Granted, once you leave your body, your final fate is set. Eternal life to those that know Jesus and serve God, and eternal damnation for those that rejected the Lord and doing what was right according to His Word. (See Romans 1:16-32 through 2:1-11 for Paul's teaching on the subject.)  And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15 NKJV) God does not choose for you whom you will serve? The choice is left up to YOU and ME! I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me. (Psalms 119:30 NKJV) The Psalmist said he chose the way of truth. God did not choose it for him.  Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord. (Proverbs 1:29 NKJV) Who makes the choice here? The person rejecting the knowledge (knowing and doing the Word) of the Lord. Choosing to fear (honor and respect) the Lord is in human hands. It is not in God's hands. It's our choice of whether we revere the Lord or not.  Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings. (Isaiah 7:15 NKJV) For fun, think about it. Who chose for you that you should eat corn flakes or eggs and biscuits this morning? Was it God? No, you chose what to eat. He calls upon us to fast at times, but it is our choice whether to obey or disobey His instruction. In the same way, we choose between good and evil. God desires we reject the evil and choose the good, but whether we do or not is in our hands.  No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. (Matthew 6:24 NKJV) Whom we will serve is in our hands. God does not make that choice for us.  So that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ. (Philippians 1:10 NET). You decide what is best! Yes, we follow the leading of the Lord and what His Word says to make the right choices, but no one can take away your right to choose. Even martyrs chose Jesus and refused to deny their faith regardless of the deadly end results.  Here is one more portion of Scripture that blows wrong theology about the life and death of a believer completely out the door.  But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith. (Philippians 1:22-25 NKJV) What do you think of that? Do you mean to tell me that Paul had a choice in the matter whether to die and be with the Lord or to stay in the body because the Philippians needed to get more from his ministry? Do mean to tell me we can have a choice? YES! We can do things to extend our days upon the earth. We can also do things to cut our days short upon the earth. Anyone that has read the first three chapters of the book of Proverbs should know that. See Proverbs 1:32-33; 2:20-22; 3:1-2, 7-8, 13-18, and I dare anyone to refute the clear teaching of the Scripture! A part of God's divine protection is that we be satisfied with a long life (Psalms 91:16). Who or what do you believe? Do you believe God or the traditional idiocy of many sectors of Christendom that think all matters of life and death are in God's hands? The Scriptures above prove the massive errors believed in these areas of choice, even in the areas of life and death.   How about this often half-quoted verse? These verses tell us one way to extend our days upon the earth. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2, 3; Paul is quoting from Exodus 20:12 -NKJV) Don't quote the first part without also quoting the second part about living long on the earth. Here is another portion of Scripture that tells us how we can extend our life upon the earth. The apostle Peter quoted it.  10 It is written in the psalms, If you love life and want to live a good, long time, then be careful what you say. Don’t tell lies or spread gossip or talk about improper things. 11 Walk away from the evil things in the world—just leave them behind, and do what is right, and always seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the Lord watches over the righteous, and His ears are attuned to their prayers. But His face is set against His enemies; He will punish evildoers. (1Peter 3:10-12 -The Voice translation- a quotation from Psalms 34:12-16) Let’s get our theology straight! The ONLY way to straighten up our ideas is by looking at Scripture after Scripture like we are doing here, but there are many more that prove the point.  Again, and for the record, it is an impossibility to trust and obey the Lord or to distrust and disobey Him unless you have a choice, a right to decide. Believing or unbelief is a human choice. God will not force “faith” (faithfulness, trust, obedience) on you any more than He will force unbelief on you. Does God control all government leaders? “But isn’t the obvious meaning of Proverbs 21:1 that, because of His sovereignty, He can control everyone whenever He wishes?” No, it does not mean that at all once you take into consideration Hosea 8:4 and Nehemiah 9:17 and a truckload of other verses! They enthroned kings without my consent! They appointed princes without my approval (Hosea 8:4a NET)! They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt (Nehemiah 9:17a NKJV). Some kings and princes (leaders of some country) disobeyed God and refused to do what He said. Have you read the extensive list of kings that disobeyed God in the Old Testament? Most of the kings of Israel and Judah disobeyed and rebelled against the Lord. Most of these rebellious kings usually died off quickly and were replaced by another that would do worse. There is no way to read First and Second Chronicles and be oblivious to the fact that most kings did not have their hearts in the hand of the Lord. If God could have turned any of the hearts of these kings whenever He wanted, why didn’t He turn any of the hearts of the evil kings? Obviously, something is wrong with the way we have understood Proverbs 21:1 and many other verses that would seem at first glance to imply that “God is in control” of all human affairs and events. If God is completely in control of human events, then how do we account for the death and destruction flooding this planet over millennia? How can we say God is in control of everything with a straight face and see the evil at work on this planet? Is God in control when women are raped, children are sold into slavery, young women are forced to be sex slaves, and Islamic terrorist organizations murder, rape, maim, behead, and knife to death men, women, and children? Only idiotic, ignoramus, anti-Biblical, religious, traditional BUNK could blind a person to believe that God is in control of all that bad stuff. He is not! I know I am repeating myself, and maybe belaboring the point though using different words, but this subject of sovereignty and “God’s control” are too important to give a lightweight answer. In the sense that God’s prophetic words concerning our planet will happen, yes, He is in control of that! The promised return of Jesus to rule and reign on the earth will occur no matter what anybody decides or chooses against it. The Book of Revelation will happen regardless of who is in government and who is not! Some events will transpire no matter what anybody believes or does because God said it, and His Word will accomplish what He wants (Isaiah 55:11). He is sovereign and in control where these events are concerned, but He is not ruling over the human will when people decide to disobey and rebel against Him and follow the devil. As far as humanity and their right to choose, God is not in control of their wrong choices or their corrupt activities. Jesus said that the thief is the one that comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). To believe that evil comes because God is in control means that you believe that God is the thief! Yes, God does allow a lot of evil stuff because many human beings have rejected Him, embraced the darkness and false religions, and they are in Satan’s territory as the “destroyer.” People choose darkness, and they reap destruction and death. The wages of sin are still death (Romans 6:23). When people choose evil and disobedience against God and His holy commandments, He turns them over to their enemies. As one example among many, read Judges 2:7-23. This truth is taught excessively in the Bible from cover to cover! There were kings and princes ordained by people that were never in God’s plan. They were NOT God's will! People voted them in” without God approval. We have some kings in Scripture that lived during a time in history where God had His Word on the line concerning His people. Sometimes God put a “decision” in their hearts to do something in line with His will and they obeyed. Other times, judgment came against some of them until they obeyed. He can do that whenever necessary! One prominent example was Nebuchadnezzar. He disobeyed the Lord and was severely judged to wander the earth for seven years with the mind of an animal. When He recognized God and was willing to obey Him, the kingdom was restored to him, and he was reinstated as King of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar was a part of a greater plan that had to do with God’s people. Because of their sin, God turned over the nation of Israel to Nebuchadnezzar. (See the book of Jeremiah.) He took thousands into captivity, and they were to remain in that land for a minimum of seventy years. The prophet Jeremiah spoke the Word of the Lord concerning Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon, and the exile of the sons of Israel. There was a divine Word in place, and events had to line up to fulfill the Word of the Lord. Nebuchadnezzar was a key player in these developments. Pharaoh continued to oppose the Word of the Lord that Moses proclaimed concerning the release of Israel from Egyptian bondage. He hardened his heart and God agreed, in turn, allowing the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart. Through ten judgments, Pharaoh complied with the Word of the Lord. Again, a Word was spoken to Abraham and his descendants, and it was necessary for the Lord to bring it to pass (Genesis 15:13, 14). There are occasions like those, but those are not the usual succession of events in the earth. Kings and all government leaders have a choice to make whether they will serve the Lord, and whether they will be a force for good or evil. If Proverbs 21:1 were taken to refer to kings in the same predicament as Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar, I could agree on one level. However, this verse makes no mention of supernatural events changing the heart of a king. Supernatural events could be what are necessary to turn the heart and force a leader to obey the Lord. Did it happen often? No. It seems to have been relegated to special events surrounding the deliverance of His people. Other than at those times, nothing happened except the decisions of the inividual, either for good or for evil.  When the Lord started showing me that the Scripture had much to say on this subject of good or evil human government, this verse in Proverbs 21:1 stared back into my face. At face value, one could hardly help giving it the standard interpretation of “God makes kings obey His will whether they want to or not because God is in control of their hearts.” Something was wrong with that interpretation when I compared this verse with other verses on the same subject. Thank God that the entrance of His Word brings LIGHT. (Psalms 119:130 NKJV) Stick to the Word and light will come regardless of how ignorant (simple) we are.  The king in Proverbs 21:1 First, who is the king in Proverbs 21:1? If we can get that question answered, then we can start to unravel this verse in our thinking. Was Solomon speaking of a specific king, or was his statement a reference to all world leaders? People want to make this verse applicable to all kings, presidents, and prime ministers. I believe that is a mistake. Who was this king mentioned by Solomon? I am convinced Solomon was speaking of himself as the king whose heart was in the hand of the Lord. Solomon gave his heart over to the Lord as a young man. He asked God to give him a wise and discerning heart so he could judge the people of Israel in righteousness. God granted his request in a powerful way. “Therefore, give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Then God said to him: “…see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you” (See 1 Kings 3:9-12 NKJV abbreviated). Solomon’s heart was in the hand of the Lord as the channels of water because he submitted his heart to the Lord and received a wise and discerning heart from Him. The phrase “heart in the hand of the Lord” speaks of someone who submits his or her life to God to do His will and carry out His plan. Though Solomon deviated from the Lord later in life, for many years, he served the Lord and did His will. Solomon’s heart (life) was in the hands of the Lord, and God could lead him as He wanted. Often Proverbs gives us “stand-alone” pithy sayings that were spoken in the wisdom of God. Other times we see a few verses discussing the same subject before the subject matter changes. Sometimes certain subjects are grouped together. Proverbs 21:1 has been pulled from its context. It is not referring to a wicked king’s heart as being in the hands of the Lord. This verse speaks of a righteous king as the one whose heart in the hand of the Lord. Let me give you a few verses before and after Proverbs 21:1 to put it in context. Proverbs Chapter 20 - A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters all evil with his eyes. V.8- A wise king sifts out the wicked and brings the threshing wheel over them. V. 26- The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart. V. 27- Mercy and truth preserve the king, and by lovingkindness he upholds his throne. The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray head. Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, as do stripes the inner depths of the heart. V. 28-30 Proverbs Chapter 21- The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. V.1- Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts. V.2- To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. V.3 Again, Solomon's subject king in Proverbs 21:1 is a righteous king. Only a righteous king can have his heart in the hand of the Lord. Unrighteous kings had hearts that were far from the Lord. The exceptions to that are kings that did not know God, but they were willing to obey the Lord in whatever He wanted for His people. Good examples are Cyrus and Artaxerxes (Ezra 1 and Nehemiah 2). Look at some of these references in connection with the preceding statements: Ezra 6:22, 1 Kings 11:2-9, 15:3, 2 Kings 10:31, see 2 Chron. 6:38, 12:14, 15:12-15, 19:9, 26:16, 32:25, 26, 34:27, 31, 36:13. Three Reasons Why You Should Not See the Christploitation Film "Left Behind"

As most people do, I receive a lot of spam in my email.  One day, while attempting to clean out my inbox, I ran across this advertisement from New Release Tuesday, a Christian music website.  As soon as I saw this it made me very angry.  There is a lot a bad sentiment implied here; it is also misleading, and exploitative.  A little harsh, you say? I shall explain why I think this is an exploitative film and why you should not go see Left Behind with Nicolas Cage. First, I shall describe the bad sentiment behind this ad.             There has been a long history of bad blood between Hollywood and conservative Christians.  Robert K. Johnston gives a very good account of this in his book Reel Spirituality: Theology and Film in Dialogue.  It begins, strangely enough, with Cecil B. DeMille.  Today, DeMille’s movie The Ten Commandments (1956) is generally held in high regard as the ultimate example of what a religious movie should be.  It details the life of Moses, from growing up in the Egyptian royal house to leading the Israelites triumphantly into the Promised Land.  It depicts God as a real entity and Moses coming to trust in the Lord after wrestling with Modern philosophical concerns about him.  ABC still broadcasts the film on television every Easter (or Passover, depending on your point of view), and has done so for so long it has become an unbreakable tradition.  Despite the fact that nearly the entire first half of the movie has no basis in the Biblical story, or that—in an opening sequence often deleted for time on television—DeMille comes out from behind the curtain to say this movie is an explicit metaphor of the Cold War,[1] the general opinion amongst Christians is that this classic movie is a highly accurate representation of the Genesis tale.  My pastor once told the story in one of his sermons how his parents, who were the conservative types that shunned all motion pictures, made the exception to see DeMille’s spectacle in the theater.              But what few people know is that this was DeMille’s second movie bearing the title The Ten Commandments.  In 1923, he produced a film with that moniker, but it was not a sword and sandal epic.  It was of the genre which he basically invented and was first famous, or more precisely, infamous.  Based on the rationalization that indiscretion could be presented on the screen as long as the sin was eventually corrected, his spectacles were little more than glorified melodramas that included an effective combination of debauchery and piety. They were, however, hits with the public. In The Ten Commandments (1923), which was produced for the then-astronomical figure of one-and-a-half million dollars, DeMille housed his portrayals of orgies within a larger moral framework of the giving of the Law (Johnston, 44).[2]   It was objections to Demille’s graphic portrayal of sinful behavior which prompted groups like The Catholic Church to form the Legion of Decency to start boycotting movies they felt were objectionable.[3]  In response, the film industry instituted the first Production Code in 1930.[4] Our modern ratings system is the ideological descendant of this Code.             Boycotting films is a tactic which did not cease in the early part of the former century.  More recently, films like Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and Kevin Smith’s Dogma have seen opening nights surrounded by picket signs.[5]  All of this goes to show that the relationship between Hollywood and the conservative church has always been uneasy at best.             Things have changed in the last ten years or so with the rise of the faith based family film.  The unexpected and overwhelming success of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ demonstrated that there is a demand for religious based fare in the movie marketplace.  The website Box Office Mojo has compiled a list of the top 100 Christian movies released in the last twenty years, the majority of which have been release in the wake of Gibson’s Passion. The total gross of these movies is over $1.5 billion.[6]  Left Behind (2014) is the most recent addition to this genre, and is typical to most of those movies made in that time period in terms of its modest budget and independent production values.  They are a far cry from the massive Biblical epics of the 50’s like The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, and Quo Vadis. And here is where I take issue with what is implied in the advertisement for Left Behind.             It seems to me that when it is said, “Show your support for Christian based films and see the movie now,” the implied meaning is “Show Hollywood they need to make more Christian movies like this.”  If that is the case and you, dear reader, run out to see Nicholas Cage in Left Behind in hopes that Hollywood executives in the major studios will start throwing big bucks at Christian morality tales, you will be sorely disappointed.  It is very unlikely that we will see the return of the big Christian Biblical epic.  On the contrary, the films we are seeing now are a new genre of exploitative movies, the Christploitation film, if you will.             How are films like Left Behind, God’s Not Dead, and Son of God exploitative?  Let us look at the definition of exploitative.  Webster’s dictionary identifies it: ex·ploit·ative adjective ik-ˈsplȯi-tə-tiv, ek-ˌsplȯi-:  exploiting or tending to exploit; especially :  unfairly or cynically using another person or group for profit or advantage    Take notice of the last example in the definition.  Exploitative films have been around so long that they are in the dictionary.  There are many kinds of exploitative films, including various horror films, monster movies, and the Blaxploitation film.  Even DeMille’s first The Ten Commandments (1923) can be classified as exploitation.  Wikipedia puts it this way, “Exploitation film is an informal label which may be applied to any film which is generally considered to be low budget, and therefore apparently attempting to gain financial success by "exploiting" a current trend or a niche genre or a base desire for lurid subject matter.”[7]  An argument might be made that these faith based movies do not fit this definition because they are anything but lurid.  In fact, their core audience wants to see sanitized fare that is safe for the whole family.              But fitting the definition, the Christian faith based movie (or Christploitation flick) is a niche genre and definitely a current trend. “Over the last five years, independent Christian movies—films with overt proselytizing—have been among the most profitable independent releases across all genres.”[8]  Also fitting the above definition, the majority of them are made on modest budgets to turn a quick profit. For example, let us look at the budgets of some Christploitation films released in the last year.  Heaven is for Real was made for $12 million and grossed $91.4 million.  Mom’s Night Out grossed over $10 million and was produced for half of that, while God’s Not Dead earned $60 million on a budget of only $2 million.[9]  So you see, studios are going to make these small movies with the intention of reaping huge dollars at the box office.  Contrary to this trend, the recent Left Behind was made for a larger budget of $16 million, but in its third week of release it has only earned just over $13 million.[10]             The reason this movie seems to be bucking the trend is because it is an awful movie.  The filmmakers decided to take more of a gamble and throw a little more money at this movie expecting the same ratio of success the other movies enjoyed.  It didn’t pay off this time.  A 2012 article states, “But this year, Cloud Ten is quadrupling down on Left Behind.  It plans to spend roughly $15 million to remake just the first of the series, nearly four times the budget of each of the original three.”[11]  It was the hope of the producers that this movie would cross over from the group of Christian movie goers to whom Christploitation flicks pander to the mainstream audience.  This didn’t happen.  A look at the professional reviews of Left Behind elucidate why.             Rotten Tomatoes is a website that compiles movie reviews in order to find a consensus on the general quality of a film.  Looking at the overall positive or negative nature of the critiques, Left Behind earned a rating of 2% fresh, meaning just one out of 57 critical reviews was positive.  If you are a Christian still deciding if you want to catch this remake, just don’t. Listen to some of the reviews compiled by Rotten Tomatoes. “Left Behind isn't a movie for progressive Christians any more than it's a movie for people who appreciate top production values, convincing acting or superlative dialogue.” Matt Brunsen.  “The movie unravels in its own destruction. Every effort to milk the tragedy of the apocalypse is met with terrible music, acting and effects that soak (and drown) the pathos in camp fare.”  Monica Castillo.  “Not only is this an amateurish travesty combining fundamentalist Christian eschatology with disaster movie b.s., but it's plodding and tedious.” James Berardinelli. [12]             The last review makes a point that I would like to touch on, that this movie is based on bad theology.  Like the literal, fundamentalist interpretation of Genesis leads to bad theology (which I discussed at length in several episodes of my podcast, which you can find here and here), taking the book of Revelation at face value can lead one to get lost trying to find meaning in the dreamlike, apocalyptic imagery of the tome and lose the real meaning behind it. Left Behind is an example of this, using the end of the world as the McGuffin for an action movie instead of offering hope to those who follow Jesus that are facing insurmountable persecution.  A nice, short read which can help all people discover the long held, orthodox interpretation of both Genesis and Revelation is book The Beginning and the End by Michael W. Paul.              So whether you are hoping to see Left Behind because you are looking for a good action movie, or because you are looking for a faith based movie which displays orthodox Christian theology, then Left Behind will disappoint you on both accounts.  As New York film reviewer Susan Granger says, “Faith-driven audiences deserve better.”[13]             Does this mean we should avoid all Christploitation movies because we deserve to see better? By all means, no! Not all of these movies are as terrible as Left Behind.  I personally liked God’s Not Dead.  Kevin Sorbo is compelling as the atheist philosophy professor who demands that his students likewise deny God’s existence.  The ensuing classroom debate harkens back to the drama in Inherit the Wind.  Even though the rest of the acting is wooden (sorry Dean Cain), and there are too many plot threads trying to prove too many preachy points, this movie is pretty good overall.              That does not mean that Christian moviegoers should blindly throw their money at terrible movies solely because they are faith based.  As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.  If we keep paying for garbage, the movie industry will keep serving up garbage.  But is Left Behind really that bad?  The ad above claims that Fandango fans gave it four stars, and the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 65% approval rating.  A closer examination of the reviews on both websites belies these apparently favorable indicators.  For every five-star rating with a simple “I liked it” review, there are several one-star diatribes describing every inferior aspect of the movie.   In the end, the answer to the question just posed is: yes, Left Behind really is that bad.             So if you are a Christian and a fan of the movies, do not feel compelled to fall into the old way of thinking, the “us versus them” attitude conservatives copped towards Hollywood for so much of the twentieth century.  Please do not drag your friends to Left Behind just to feed a desire to see more faith based movies in the theater.  Do your research, look at the reviews, and spend your money on quality.  If Left Behind fails to meet expectations (which I say it has, both in quality and financially) it does not mean the end of the world. The end of the world will come at a time no one expects and in a way no one can predict, just as Jesus said in Matthew 24.  In the meantime, Christploitation films are, for the foreseeable future, going to keep premiering at the cineplex.  Just because one falters, it will not dissuade any other movie producers from making money in the genre.  That is my prediction.
