POPULARITY
"Squid Game" is one of the most popular shows in the world. The first season of the South Korean series was a ginormous success for Netflix and became a pop culture phenomenon. The second season dared to go even bigger, bringing back Emmy Award-winner Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun as he sets out to end the games and the Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun. Both Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun, along with Emmy Award-winning series director Hwang Dong-hyuk, were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the second season, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the series, which is now available to stream in full on Netflix. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
In an early episode of Squid Game 2, the series' working-class hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is summoned to a dance club on Halloween night. Weaving among revelers dressed as sexy nurses, cops, and skeletons, he eventually spots the masked figure he's been pursuing, clad in the hot-pink tracksuit of a Squid Game guard. The scene may well be a nod on the part of creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to the ubiquity of Squid Game Halloween costumes in 2021, when the holiday fell roughly six weeks after Netflix's Korean megahit debuted and quickly became the platform's most-watched series of all time.知识点:working class1. Happy New Year, girlie pops! We're diving deep into everything we've been watching and reading and what we're hyped for in 2025. First up, we're venturing into the world of body horror with The Substance (Amazon Prime), starring Demi Moore as a fading celebrity who takes drastic measures to reclaim her youth with some seriously freaky side effects. We also check back in with Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 2 (Netflix). This season promises to be even more politically charged, with creator Hwang Dong-hyuk exploring the conflicts arising from the choices we make. Plus, we're spilling the tea on the K-pop connections! Then, we're blasting off into space with Alien: Romulus (Disney+), a thrilling addition to the Alien franchise. We rave about the acting, especially David Jonsson as the AI Andy, whose transformation is seriously mind-blowing. On the book front, we've got a mixed bag of reads. We start with the heartwarming yet grumpy charm of A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, followed by the mind-bending premise of The Husbands by Holly Gramazio, where changing a lightbulb changes your entire life (and husband!). We also discuss Talking at Night by Claire Daverley, a poignant love story spanning years and marked by tragedy. Our January book club pick, The Ledge by Christian White, gets some love, as does Evenings and Weekends by Oisin McKenna, a literary fiction gem reminiscent of Love Actually, exploring the lives of interconnected friends during a London heatwave. We also dive into more of Fredrik Backman's work with The Answer Is No, a short and sweet read about a man who hates decisions, and She's Always Hungry by Eliza Clark, a collection of short stories exploring human hunger and desire (which, sadly, didn't quite hit the mark for us). Finally, we celebrate the brilliance of Greta & Valdin by Rebecca K Reilly, a witty and chaotic story about siblings navigating adulthood and love.

“Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had never written a TV series before, but after a decade conceptualizing it, he created an unprecedented global sensation. “Squid Game” is about a dystopian survival competition where hundreds of cash-strapped players aim for a multi-million dollar cash prize. The show has become No. 1 in 90 countries and the most-watched Netflix program of all time. The USC-trained filmmaker had big ambitions for the project, but was blown away by how many people worldwide are fans. “I wanted to make a global TV show. My goal was hitting number one in the U.S. Netflix rank. But I never expected this kind of big success,” he says. When Hwang proposed “Squid Game,” it was considered too weird and too violent. So while he searched for investors for that project, he directed three acclaimed films: “The Crucible,” “Miss Granny,” and “The Fortress.” In 2018, Netflix took a closer look, “got hooked,” and greenlit the show. The streaming service's global platform gave the show visibility and a massive audience. With all the achievements, Hwang has agreed to work on season two, which could be out by the end of 2023 or 2024. And the streaming service may be spawning a “Squid Game” universe.

Regina Kim is a Culture and Trends Writer for Netflix. Her articles on the hallyu phenomenon and Korean content have appeared in Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, ELLE, MTV News, Vulture, Entertainment Weekly, NBC News, and Teen Vogue. They also include an interview with Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk. We talked about what it feels like to be writing about Korean content while it is so popular. Because Regina works for Netflix, we talked about distribution, algorithms, and access to the latest Korean dramas. From there, we look at what constitutes a Korean drama and whether there are any that people might be sleeping on. After that, it was K-pop, NFTs, and metaverses; what was her track of the year; and why are idol groups more popular internationally than acts like IU or AKMU. Finally, we looked at her work on anti-Asian racism. Her pieces on this struck a chord with many, suggesting that if one is to stan Korean content, there is also a responsibility to stand up against anti-Asian behavior. The conservation closes with Regina's thoughts on the future and the meaning of life. Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, it stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung.The series centers on a contest where 456 players, drawn from different walks of life but each deeply in debt, play a set of children's games with deadly consequences for losing for a chance to win a 38 million dollar prize.
