Riley struggles with the revelation of Walsh's death, and Forrest fully transforms into a complete dickhole. Riley begins to spiral as he struggles with who to trust, while Buffy becomes the main suspect in Maggie Walsh's death. Join Sarah, Tabby, & Leah as they discuss indoctrination, individualism vs. collectivism, and the end of normalcy.
Joe Biden wants to switch around the order of the Democratic primary contests. We look at why he wants to do that, and what it could mean for the party. On Today's Show:Christina Greer, associate professor of political science at Fordham University, host of the podcast "FAQNYC," host of "The Blackest Questions" podcast on the Grio and the author of Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream (Oxford University Press, 2013), talks about the latest national political news, including that President Biden is pushing for a change in the order of presidential primaries, starting with South Carolina instead of Iowa, which traditionally held the first Democratic caucus.
Maggie Walsh tried to kill Buffy, but the Slayer lives. Maggie, on the other hand, is dead—not at Buffy's hands but rather from the arm needle of her own Frankensteined creation, Adam. When Buffy infiltrates the Initiative looking for answers, she comes face to face with Adam and his brutal addiction to floppy disk–driven exposition. Adam handily beats Buffy and a withdrawal-suffering Riley before disappearing to dissect another day. One monster is dead, and another has risen. Hear us discuss… Spike is in fine form in this episode It's hard to feel sympathy for someone as boring as Riley We … agree … with Xander?? Willy, we love what you've done with the place Steph is still on the mystery of demonic poop—floppy disk edition! Trigger warnings Addiction/withdrawal, child death, drugs
Summary In this episode, Laine and Cory discuss David Boreanaz's Acting School for Pain, how cute Tara and Willow are, and we spend entirely too much time talking about floppy discs. The only way Edwina could convince her husband to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer was to do a podcast about it. This week, we discuss the double over arching episodes The I In Team/Goodbye Iowa and ponder on why Maggie Walsh was really killed off and if Riley is based off Superman or Captain American.

We have nothing to hold onto… It’s exposition dumping everywhere you look as Lani and Noelle have a fabulous time talking about “Goodbye Iowa” (S4.14).
Riley starts to develop a personality. It is a shame it is crazy. Buffy is accused of murder. Floppy discs come back in style. Support the show (https://shop.spreadshirt.com/JandLWatches/)
Michael Holland returns to the Conversations with Dead People mausoleum to discuss the agelessness of Ian McShane. (Coming soon: Conversations with Deadwood.) We also talk a little about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Episode 413, “The I in Team” covers a LOT of territory, including a dramatically silly but thematically significant trap, the very perfunctory end of Maggie Walsh’s story, and the high watermark (so far) of the patented Buffyverse “slo-mo sex-equals-violence” montage. And episode 414 makes some implied promises with the title “Goodbye Iowa” that maybe don’t pay off the way some viewers expected. Adam studies anatomy, Riley’s off his meds, a certain subtext considers dropping the sub, and the relevance of Road Runner cartoons is discussed. Next: I’ll be once again by Whedon Studies author and Associate Dean for Faculty, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences at Marquette University James South as we find Faith in episodes 415, “This Year’s Girl” and 416, “Who Are You.” THE BREAKDOWN Run Time: 01:19:00 00:00:55 - Intro / Guest 00:06:54 - Main Topic 01:13:52 - Outro / Next THE LIBRARY Seven Seasons of Buffy: Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Discuss Their Favorite Television Show (Smart Pop series), edited by Glenn Yeffeth THE LINKS Patrick (H) Willem’s Video Essays THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. We’re back! For justice, and the safety of puppies! Brazilian fan community organizer extraordinaire Johny Ho joins me to talk about the maybe possibly sloggy mid-point of Season Four. In 411, “Doomed,” the kids LITERALLY go back to high school in what Paul rather grumpily refers to as a clumsy attempt to demonstrate maturation. While in 412, “A New Man,” the annual Buffy Birthday Crisis eschews the usual zombies and problematic issues of power and consent in favor of...a mid-life crisis. Also we lament all those stories and spinoffs that could have been: the more sophisticated Giles vs. Walsh arc we never got; Ripper the Series; and the Giles/Spike half hour buddy comedy series that just simply HAS to exist in the multiverse somewhere. Next: Someone, possibly Michael Holland, joins me to discuss 413, “The I in Team” and 414, “Goodbye Iowa.” THE BREAKDOWN Run Time: 01:17:00 00:00:55 - Intro / Apologies / Guest 00:03:48 - Main Topic 01:13:40 - Outro / Next THE LIBRARY Library Closed For Filing - Please Come Back Tomorrow THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. Well hey there! Season 4 episode 14 is here and full of "The Initiative" drama, for better or worse. Willow and Xander have kind of taken a back seat for the last couple of weeks while Buffy and Taad (Riley) fell head first into an ocean of plot devices. We meet Adam, our weird pseudo-technabomination monster, and son(?) of the recently murdered Maggie Walsh. Also, Taad is apparently addicted to some buff-dude meds and started abusing all of his friends? Whadda guy. Thanks for listening!
While this is part 2 of a Riley centric story line, Bob and Chelsea really dig into the early stages of the Willow/Tara relationship. It isn't on screen nearly as long, but has so many more implications for the series and is far more interesting.
Join us as we discuss our most favorite character in the entire Buffy universe, Adam! Just kidding. Join us as we talk about floppy disks and read from old live journal entries!
This week, Ginny fills us in on her Phantom of the Opera experience and we discuss the concept of “sweeps” and what it used to mean when Nielsen regularly broke our hearts (pour one out for Enlisted and Trophy Wife). But meanwhile, on the shows we are supposed to be talking about, we need to talk about Adam. On Angel, there’s a demon possession, but we’re living in the alternate reality of Watcher. It’s nice here.

Michaela and David are truly baffled by what might be the strangest damn episode of Buffy yet, "Goodbye Iowa". There are just too many things happening in this episode to even talk about but special mention goes to Adam eating floppy disks like they're chips, gigantic scopes on guns, oddly plot-relevant bandanas, bizarre sweater necklines, the undying qualities of turtlenecks and Tony's admirable commitment to continuity in an episode that otherwise makes absolutely no sense. LIVE from the mobile unit of Crazy Couch Studios, Jos and Liesl report to you from deep inside of Oakland (California) with special guest Doe Taryn to cover all the ins and outs of the coulda-been-great "Goodbye Iowa." The scoobies discuss being a lesbian in the 90's, not being mature in the 90's, and whether there's an apostrophe before the "s" in 90's.
Shit's going down on Buffy. Walsh is dead, and the Initiative is in chaos. They are steal teasing me with the maybe-lesbianism. Buffy looks hot in a labcoat and glasses, and Riley is off his meds. Also, the return of Willy the Snitch. As for Angel, we go to some dark places, a kid is possessed by a demon, but there's a particularly earth-shattering twist in the mix. Also he says some terrifying words thrown at poor Wesley. Is that character development for him?
at this point, if we start off not liking a character, that's a pretty good indicator that eventually we're going to feel really really bad for them. case in point: riley! not case in point: forrest!
Season 4 slows to a crawl with this week's Buffy episodes The I in Team and Goodbye Iowa. Ready your booze, folks: you'd think the Big Bad reveal would be thrilling, but you would be wrong!
This week on Hellmouthy: Ryan and Kelly are guestless and things get fun and funky! They talk Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes THE I IN TEAM and GOODBYE IOWA. These episodes are full of demon invisalign, feet, and underwhelming Frankenstein’s monsters! Catch Ryan and Kelly playing with Big Boss at The Nerdist School stage on House Team Sunday nights! In "The I in Team", Buffy has been welcomed into the Initiative with open arms! Well, by Riley at least. Professor Walsh (and Forrest) are not too keen on the Slayer learning their secrets and taking up their favorite commando's time. While Buffy ignores the Scoobies' warnings against blindly trusting the secret government agency, Walsh develops a plan to get rid of the pesky blonde. Kristen and Mike discuss the reveal of Adam, and propose alternate ways this season could have developed. In "Goodbye Iowa", the Scoobies, worried that Walsh will send the Initiative to silence them, hide in Xander's basement. Meanwhile, Adam escapes the Initiative and murders a young boy. As Riley becomes sicker and more erratic, Buffy and Xander infiltrate the Initiative. We try to understand Walsh's plans for Adam, and Kristen has a lot to say about Sunnydale fashion. PLUS! We find a better title than Goodbye Iowa.
After break from recording Amanda and Andrea are back with a long(ish) episode to discuss "Goodbye Iowa" Be forewarned, Riley haters there's a lot of praise heaped on Marc Blucas' performance in this episode. There's also a fair amount of Andrea being frustrated with Amanda's devil's advocacy for Forrest and Adam.
