In this episode of The Actor's Career Compass, host Martin Bentsen explores the age-old question of whether aspiring actors need to attend acting school. The answer may surprise you - no, you don't need to go to acting school to become an actor. However, Bentsen points out that attending acting school can be incredibly beneficial. He discusses the importance of real experience, suggesting that actors start submitting themselves for small unpaid student films and projects while in training. Bentsen also highlights the benefits of formal training, such as increasing skills, networking opportunities, and the ability to add it to your resume. He acknowledges that attending an acting program can be expensive and time-consuming, but emphasizes the value of expert training. In conclusion, while attending acting school is not a requirement, it can provide actors with valuable skills, networking opportunities, and a strong resume. Bentsen encourages actors to seek real experience while training and offers alternative ways to improve acting skills, such as reading books and attending workshops. He reminds listeners that success is possible in both scenarios, but recommends submitting oneself to auditions while in training to gain invaluable experience. Bentsen also mentions that most colleges and conservatories do not spend a lot of time teaching actors how to book work and build their careers, and to consider a career coach as well. we are happy to welcome back friend of the show and man about time James Balsamo to talk about one of his new films Karate Ghost 2 Dojo of Death! James Balsamo is a jack-of-all-trades; a songwriter, an actor, a sculptor, but most importantly, a filmmaker extraordinaire. From the time he was just a lad, and like so many others, James became fascinated with the Horror genre, attending his first Horror convention at the age of 8. As a youngster, James knew what he wanted to do when "he grew up" - follow in the footsteps of his star slasher icons, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. Fueled by his ambitions, James convinced his parents to enroll him in Acting School. As a student in many prestigious New York acting schools, including Lee Strasberg, James' passion for film and acting continued to grow. A New Yorker all his life, Balsamo continued his professional career at Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City. James grew tired of theatrical acting after high school, and knew it was time to make the transition to the big screen. He left his Shakespearean tights at the door, and spilled big screen blood all the way through Five Towns College. Balsamo appears on both sides of the camera in many of his works, including his most recent project, Hack Job. Hack Job, with a budget under $60,000 has made its international debut, is selling worldwide, as well as exciting mentions during the NYC Tour of music icons GWAR and Ghoul. For now, James continues the "I Spill Your Guts" push, as he prepares for his newest project "Cool As Hell". After allowing the Jester to politely ask a few questions, the Heroes were satisfied that they had gotten at least some of the truth out of the men. They turned to look back at the door which held in the group of creatures. The Jester peered back through the small slat in the door and figured the rough whereabouts of all of the hideous beasts. Turning back to the other Heroes, they nodded and he took a step back from the door. Preparing himself, he conjured a small ball of flame in his hand. He motioned towards the window in the door, and the flame shot forth and into the room. It struck against the back wall, spreading outward to consume all in its path. The creatures within shrieked and ran towards the sides of the door to escape the flames. Sparks shot out from the fingertips of the Jester as fire continued to pour forth. Soon, the room was filled with flames and shrieking abominations. The door began to creak as they battered against it. The Jester's small skeletons piled up against it in an effort to keep it from breaking open. The heat poured outward, nearly singeing the eyebrows off of the religious leaders nearby. After what seemed an eternity, the cries quieted down and the Jester relaxed his hand. The vampires were dead. Big thanks to Gabriel for coming on the show! Bad Habits Slumping Animals into people Being in your body as an actor Just standing in the space. It takes quite a lot of understanding where your weight is in the space. Do you lean forward, which gives maybe an air of anxiety or enthusiasm? I would hate to say that if you stand in a certain way, it is a certain thing. Right. But we do read bodies. I work on trying to find a neutrality Neutral plus, so that your body is relaxed in line and ready to go. Your body and your voice, and your everything are ready to go. That's why you see so many British actors that you think are mind-blowing because they're ready. Musicians train every day. The actors don't, and if you're lucky enough, you need to be ready to play Hamlet now. Not in five weeks when you've done the work. No. Now. Yeah. And I think actors are a bit lazy about that. Are you keeping up with your instrument? It's about finding your inner self, your inner balance, and how your body works. It's a tough old business. It's not a nice game to play. We mustn't do mindless movement. Maybe you should challenge yourself on the treadmill, run towards something, or somebody's chasing you. It alters the way you run on the treadmill. I love it because it's talking about being conscious in your movement. I think that if we can apply a little bit of thought to why we do something about finding the weight in a movement. We have to keep the mind alive. There are so many things that block the mind off. You're going to be exploring conscious movement, that one to warm up the body, but also that can be used in learning what the conscious movement of your characters would be. I think you have to start with yourself. And discover maybe that your rib cage is very tight and that perhaps you can find a way to make it move a bit more. And also, if you change the thought, the quality of the movement changes. So again, if I reach up and I want to hail someone over there, it's a different kind of reach. That's what interests me about movement. How we move and why we move rather than just, it's an exercise. So that is actually if you are going to play an old person just for argument's sake. Why is their body decreed? What is it about their body? What are they? What are they working against? I mean, fears, for instance, in the Cherry Orchard. What is his body like? Is it just arthritis? What is it that makes his movements? And if you know the why and the how, then it's easier to inhabit the body of fears. To be bringing questions to you. The language changes the body. A physical imagination. Just try it. And try not to judge. Variation is what's interesting. It's not about being a clone.

There are a lot of fantastic women in Women Talking, but when Jordan first saw the film in theaters, she was immediately struck by the powerful performances of the movie's matriarchs, one of whom is played to hilarious, heartbreaking perfection by today's guest, Sheila McCarthy. Sheila tells us about identifying with Liza Minnelli's Pookie Adams in The Sterile Cuckoo — a feeling that she had when she saw the film in theaters as a teenager. On this episode, we are THRILLED to welcome back James Balsamo to talk about his new movie SLICE! With 18 golf holes of terror, heads will surely roll. Hank Chen (Laugh Factory, Home Again, Life-Size 2) comes by the yard to discuss the new Billy Eichner movie "Bros," but the result is an evisceration of acting schools and what faculty and staff are doing wrong to prepare actors for a career in show business. Comparing their experiences at NYU graduate school and The Actor's Studio, they discuss their disappointing experiences as well as the frustration in the acting world that led them to pursue a career in standup comedy. In particular, Bill discusses why he believes many acting schools like NYU are a scam. Finally, they get to the seminal movie "Bros" and why it's simultaneously great and groundbreaking and also a huge whiff at the film market. Abbott and Costello were an American comedy duo composed of comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, whose work on radio and in film and television made them the most popular comedy team of the 1940s and early 1950s and the highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War II. Their patter routine "Who's on First?" is one of the best-known comedy routines of all time. Their popularity waned in the early 1950s due to overexposure and their film and television contracts lapsed. The partnership ended soon afterwards. The team's first known radio broadcast was on The Kate Smith Hour on February 3, 1938. At first, the similarities between their voices made it difficult for radio listeners (as opposed to stage audiences) to tell them apart during their rapid-fire repartee. As a result, Costello affected a high-pitched, childish voice. "Who's on First?" was first performed for a national radio audience the following month. They performed on the program as regulars for two years, while also landing roles in a Broadway revue, The Streets of Paris, in 1939. Abbott and Costello on radio (note Abbott without toupee normally worn in films) After debuting their own program, The Abbott and Costello Show, as Fred Allen's summer replacement in 1940, Abbott and Costello joined Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy on The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1941. Two of their films (Buck Privates and Hold That Ghost) were adapted for Lux Radio Theater that year. Their program returned in its own weekly time slot starting on October 8, 1942 and Camel cigarettes as sponsor.
