Order! Order! Welcome to Episode 239 of the Spybrary Spy Book Podcast! I'm your host, Shane and today Whaley goes to Westminster. But don't worry; I'm not running for office! I recently had the pleasure of enjoying a tea break with Gordon Henderson MP. I am a politics nerd so it was a delight for me to combine both of my passions, espionage and politics. Gordon isn't just a sitting member of Parliament for Sittingbourne and Sheppey in Kent—he's also a passionate writer of spy fiction. We'll dive into his experiences and inspirations, including his admiration for Len Deighton and his creation of a very relatable, working-class spy named Steven Statton. Join us as Gordon Henderson MP shares insights into his writing process, offers advice for aspiring authors, and Shane cheekily asks him about the latest spy scandals in Parliament. Plus, you'll hear his thoughts on his favorite spy novels, films, and music that fuels his creativity. So, grab a cup of tea and settle in for an engaging conversation in the heart of the Palace of Westminster. All this and more, coming up on Spybrary! Steven Statton - a very working-class spy, is a thrill-a-minute story of intrigue and betrayal at the heart of Britain's most secretive intelligence agency. Although set mainly in London, the story sees Steven Statton travel the world in an effort to counter an Iranian plot to use the Mafia to destabilise Britain by flooding its streets with heroin. However, Statton's task is made harder when he is betrayed by somebody working in the British Secret Service. Matters come to a head in a lockup garage in London's East End, where Statton has a violent confrontation with two Mafia hitmen, and with his own boss.
Servco Pacific newly appointed CEO Peter Dames' consistent, ego-free approach has been crucial to his success. In this episode, we explore his journey, the influence of music teachers, and the importance of empathy and compassion in business. Originally hailing from Bayonne, New Jersey, Dames shared how economic changes led his family to move to Los Angeles when he was just ten months old. He fondly reminisced about embarking on cross-country adventures in a Volkswagen minivan with his family as a child. He credited his music teachers, particularly Gordon Henderson, with shaping his personality and being instrumental in his growth. "Fail quick and make changes. Don't worry about planning for years. Let's put some plans together, execute, make some mistakes … let's make some change." The interview delved into his career choices, which included a noteworthy internship with Ronald Reagan's office and experiences working with Mark Fukunaga's family at Toyota in Japan. He also discussed Servco Pacific's succession planning efforts, which resulted in him becoming president and CEO on Oct. 1, 2023, and the importance of company culture, empathy and adaptability in the ever-evolving automotive industry.

While most of you probably know KPCC by the voices you hear on air every day, our station requires the contributions of so many talented, unique individuals whose names aren't said at the end of a news story or even in the production credits at the end of the week. These are the people who truly make KPCC -- who keep our broadcast equipment running, who put on our pledge drives and help secure sponsorships and major donations, who put together the pre-recorded spots you hear between shows, who make sure that our facilities at the Mohn Broadcast Center are operating smoothly. This week on AirTalk, we're highlighting some of these amazing people who work at KPCC who might not be as familiar with but whose tireless efforts are critical to what you hear on the air every day. Today, we're featuring traffic manager Jen Baughman (and no, it's not the kind of traffic on the freeways) and production specialist Gordon Henderson, whose voice you'll probably recognize. Guests: Jen Baughman, KPCC traffic manager Gordon Henderson, KPCC announcer and production specialist

In 2012, PBS aired a documentary that chronicled the life and legacy of a man known in his time as the “Father of the Underground Railroad.” To learn more about the film, we spoke to executive producer Gordon Henderson. William Still (c. 1821–1902) was an abolitionist and civil rights activist who helped countless black slaves find freedom in Canada. Perhaps even more important, were the diligent records he kept of the people he helped along the way. In 1872, Still compiled the biographical details, personal narratives, and letters of over 600 fugitive slaves and published The Underground Railroad Records. This work became both a powerful anti-slavery testament and an invaluable historical document.
