Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate, and let's change this world! On today's episode, Jeff welcomes guest Payton Riley, the fifteen-year-old singer-songwriter from Conroe, Texas. To begin, Payton explains that she began taking vocal lessons at age 7 and started her career two years later by singing the Star-Spangled Banner around town. She shares what initially captured her interest in singing and hopes to be a performer like Miranda Lambert one day. Payton was among the top 10 finalists in the 2023 TCMA Songwriter Contest. She also attended a songwriter retreat in Memphis with Grace Askew, where she learned skills and techniques she continues to use today. She also shares about the most inspirational people she has met in the music business thus far. Payton grew up singing Christian music in school and always listened to country music at home with her mom. She prefers to write songs naturally without feeling pressured to do so. Payton also explains when she finds the time to be a kid while balancing school, sports, church, and her music career. She shares that her Christian school is small and close-knit and understands Payton's desire to follow her dreams. Her goal is to attend Belmont College for a degree in songwriting and continue playing as many shows as possible to get her name out there. She hopes to be a light for listeners and let them know they can always chase their dreams. In closing, she offers her best advice for people just starting in their passion: surround yourself with positive people who can always lift you. Finally, she highlights her upcoming releases and the formation of her new band. Learn more about Jeff Newkirk. Do you have any game-changers in your life? Saturday is the biggest day of the Juke Joint Festival weekend, and we meet up with musician, author and educator Hal Reed, songwriter-singer Grace Askew, drop in on Robert Kimbrough Sr.'s CD release party, grab some barbecue and watch the legendary monkeys riding dogs.
Host Grace Askew chats with the prolific, eccentric artist Muck Sticky on all things being a working artist. His story of finding strength in being an independent artist, staying true to his path - no matter how high his level of success - will truly inspire you.Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Muck Sticky comes from a long line of musicians. His great-grandparents founded one of the first gospel bluegrass quartets in 1929 known as The Wayfaring Strangers, and both of his grandfathers were well known musicians. One was Gene Lowery of The Dixie Four who often recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, and sang backing vocals for artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich.Between the ages of 16-23, Sticky was employed in many different fields including carpentry, restaurant service, bricklaying, water park lifeguard, and ice cream truck driver. In the year 2000, with the money he earned from his manual laborer job at a local convention service company, he bought an 8-track recorder and began creating his first album. In January 2001, he gave his first live performance at a “Battle of the Bands” concert in his hometown Memphis, TN. Since Sticky recorded all of his music alone, he decided to attach wigs, hats, sunglasses, and instruments to 6-foot tall floor lamps and call them his “band”. To this day he frequently brings them on stage during his shows, but the show has grown to include his mother, sister, best friends, and his fans.Sticky was featured on the MTV series $5 Cover, which centers around the careers of singers from the Memphis, TN area. The show is produced by Craig Brewer, director and writer of the 2005 movie, Hustle & Flow.[1]He has released a feature film entitled Muscadine Wine.A review described Sticky as an artist who "comes across as a backwoods midpoint between Beck and Mungo Jerry...somewhere between Slim Shady and Weird Al."[2]Watch his 2nd feature film, "Dig That, Zeebo Newton," here.Curated Spotify playlist for Muck Sticky can be listened to here. Grace Askew is a sixth-generation Memphian and a highway child. With seven studio albums and nearly a decade of touring under her belt, Askew has established herself as a relentlessly creative artist and a powerhouse of talent. She has become a festival favorite at eclectic live events and gained the attention from brands like Stetson, Wrangler, and Tecovas Boots, all of which have signed her on as a model/spokeswoman. She mostly hits the road accompanied only by her truck, Wanda. Still, she has also supported legends like Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry, Lisa Marie Presley, Marty Stuart, Paul Thorn, Jesse Winchester, Colter Wall, the late Delta bluesman T- Model Ford, and Leon Russell. She is an internationally recognized tunesmith placing first in the International Songwriting Competition, the Unsigned Only Music Competition, and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Her lyrics weave vivid imagery of a life lived with authenticity and grit with a Faulknerian Southern-Gothic storytelling style, always paying homage to her Delta roots. She maintains this practice while touring, collaborating on projects with Wrangler and Stetson in New Mexico, developing new sounds, and recording. Her mantra “creativity is a muscle; dare to suck” epitomizes her endeavor, as she explores the limits of her muse. Grace was a contestant on Season 4 of NBC’s The Voice (team Blake). She has won numerous songwriting awards, including Unsigned Only (First Place, Americana, 2017), the International Songwriting Competition (First Place, Americana, 2016), and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (2014 Grand Prize, Folk). Most recently, Grace was on team Blake Shelton of NBC's The Voice (season 4) which took her all the way to the final 32 and was later deemed a top 3 favorite contestant by Yahoo Music and RollingStone.com.
