Although it has been decades, I DO remember how challenging and isolating it can be to move away during your 20's from your hometown to accompany and support a spouse that is pursuing a promising job opportunity.  Arkansas Native and Singer/Songwriter Cory Jackson did just that to support his spouse.  I was only too happy to help introduce him to the Heartland's music scene when a mutual acquaintance asked me to do so.  Since that request in 2023, it has been my privilege to welcome Cory to the KKFI airwaves and to showcase him as a Heartland Song Network Artist of the Month. Cory works to bridge the gap between modern country music and the classic sounds of the past with his contemporary compositions and storytelling.  Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Cory's rural upbringing deeply influences his music. Introduced to the guitar by his grandfather at 16, Cory began learning cover songs, which led to mastering a few chords and eventually trying his hand at songwriting. Fueled by dreams of a big-stage career that filled his thoughts during bus rides home from school, Cory quickly gained recognition for his talent. He released his first EP in 2015, followed by a series of singles available across all streaming platforms.  He has won independent artist competitions and earned the Arkansas Country Music Association's "Country Artist of the Year" award in 2018.  Cory experienced a three-chair turn on NBC's The Voice in 2019, joining Team Blake and further refining his craft under Blake Shelton's mentorship. Cory values connection with his audience, staying true to his roots while pushing the boundaries of country music. Whether performing intimate acoustic sets like this one in our community radio studio or commanding large stages at festivals and other music venues, Cory has the ability to resonate with fans through heartfelt music.  Enjoy this conversation and musical performance from Country artist Cory Jackson.

Ready for some gypsy-soul rock-n-roll??  Well you're going to love the music and the convo with Gina Zo of Velvet Rouge.  They have brand new music coming out to continue their exceptional offerings and performances that made them Philly's hottest rock band.Gina's been singing and dancing pretty much since she could start to talk and walk.  And took to all aspects of being a musician just as quickly - writing songs as soon as she was gifted a guitar, and then immediately began prospecting with venues for gigs, showing a willingness for the grind of getting your name and music out there. Then at 17 she auditioned for The Voice and made it to the show on Team Blake.  There she did receive coaching from Gwen Stefani, which you can see homage to in her performances.Off of the success of the show, she was able to sign with a label, however here she experiences the darker side of the industry where she didn't have control over her own content and image and it has her take a break from singing, writing and performing.Luckily for us, she eventually gets motivated to "get the band back together" and now called Velvet Rouge, they've committed to go all out and also to advocate for change in the treatment of women in the industry. Also, recently come out as bi-sexual, Gina is also an advocate for being your most genuine self, and released the anthemic "Faking It" about the struggles with navigating that.  Happy Pride! All that and much more to look forward to in this interview, including a live performance from Gina of "Shattered" which is releasing the same day as this interview.  This accompanies the previously released summer power jam "Lonely Since The Day We Met", and the full EP comes out in a month on 7/26.  Join for the EP release show at Johnny Brenda's on 7/27!Lastly, we'll have our typically trivial details to explore - like what's up with this broken toilet seat on the wall....???Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". With a single dad who DJ'd every weekend during her childhood, it was impossible for Gina not to be involved in music. When she turned 14, she asked her dad if she could be more involved in his gigs and would help him set up his equipment. Gina always felt that she wanted something bigger than her small town of Paxton, Illinois, and performing became a way for her to stand out in her town. As she went through high school, she realized she wanted to pursue music more seriously. With her father and stepmother's support, she decided to move in with her aunt, Gretchen, in Sacramento, California. The transition to a big city was very intimidating at first, but, with the help of her aunt, she now feels more comfortable in California. The Voice is one of America's most popular shows, airing Monday and Tuesday.ABOUT THE VOICEThe four-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series "The Voice" features the strongest vocalists from across the country invited to compete in the show's newest season.Grammy Award-winning hip-hop star Chance the Rapper and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Niall Horan claim their red chairs alongside returning coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton as they vie to discover and coach the next singing phenomenon. The competition is tougher than ever as Shelton goes for the win in his final season. The show's innovative format features five stages of competition: Blind Auditions, Battle Rounds, Knockouts, Playoffs and Live Performance Shows.During the Blind Auditions, the decisions from the coaches are based solely on voice and not looks. The coaches hear the artists perform but they don't get to see them, thanks to rotating chairs. If a coach is impressed by the artist's voice, they push a button to select the artist for their team. At this point, the coach's chair will swivel so that they can face the artist they selected. If more than one coach pushes the button, the power then shifts to the artist to choose which coach they want to work with. If no one pushes their button, the artist is eliminated from the competition. The artists' family and friends watch their Blind Auditions from side stage with host Carson Daly, cheering on their loved ones and hoping for a coveted chair turn.Returning this season is the block, which adds another layer of coach competition during the Blind Auditions. The coach chairs each have an extra set of buttons with the other three coaches' names on them, which prevents a coach from adding a new artist to his or her team. The coaches can use their block buttons only on one artist for the entire first round of the competition. The blocked coach only discovers they are blocked if they press their button, and though their chair will still turn, their lane lights up with "BLOCKED." If the coach doesn't press their button, the block is still available for another audition.Once the teams are set, the battle is on. The coaches dedicate themselves to developing their team of artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success. During the Battle Rounds, the coaches will pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together. The artists are vying for their coach's confidence and decision to take them to the next round. After each vocal battle, the coach must choose which of his or her artists will advance to the next round of competition. This season during Battles, the all-new Playoff Pass is at stake. The Playoff Pass will allow both artists in a battle to advance while the Playoff Pass winner gets a huge advantage by skipping the Knockout Rounds and advancing straight to Playoffs, taking them one step closer to Lives. Each coach will have one Playoff Pass to use as well as one steal in the Battles. With the steals in play, a losing artist is available for the other coaches to save and bring onto their own team. Artists who won their battle or were stolen by another coach will advance to the Knockouts, while the four artists with a Playoff Pass will advance straight to Playoffs. In the Knockouts, the artists will be paired against another teammate, but this time they will perform individually while their direct competitors watch and wait. To prepare for this high-pressure competition, the coaches enlist legendary country music icon Reba McEntire as the Mega Mentor to advise all of the artists competing in the Knockouts. Having served as Battle advisor to Team Blake during the show's inaugural season, it's most fitting Reba returns as Blake coaches his final group of artists and bids farewell to the competition. The coaches will choose the winner of each Knockout, and the artist not selected will be available to be stolen by another coach. The pressure is on as each coach will only have one steal in the Knockouts. The Playoffs are back, further bolstering the competition following the Knockouts. The 20 remaining artists hold nothing back and tough decisions are made when each coach can only advance two artists to the live semifinals. The stakes are even higher for the artists because there are no steals available.Once the Live Performance Shows begin, the top artists will compete against each other during live broadcasts. This time, the television audience will vote to save their favorite artist. The live semifinals will be more dramatic than ever because the Top 8 artists will all perform live for a real-time vote, and results will be revealed at the end of that show. After the real-time votes are counted that night, the five artists with the most votes will be revealed and advance to the following week's finale. Those with the lowest number of votes will be sent home. In the end, one artist will be named "The Voice" and will receive the grand prize of a recording contract."The Voice" is a presentation of MGM Television, Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, and ITV Studios The Voice USA, Inc. The series was created by John de Mol, who serves as an executive producer along with Mark Burnett, Audrey Morrissey, Amanda Zucker, Kyra Thompson and Adam H. The Battle Rounds for Season 23 of The Voice are under way! As always, Premiere Networks, in conjunction with NBC, is bringing you exclusive interview opportunities with the Voice winners as they get set for the next battle The Voice is one of America's most popular shows, airing Monday and Tuesday. Request someone from your hometown (bios contain where they're from)! Sign up for an interview (or a series of interviews) with one of these up-and-coming stars as they sing their way to a recording contract ABOUT THE VOICE The four-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series "The Voice" returns with the strongest vocalists from across the country invited to compete in the show's newest season, which premieres March 6. Grammy Award-winning hip-hop star Chance the Rapper and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Niall Horan claim their red chairs alongside returning coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton as they vie to discover and coach the next singing phenomenon. The competition is tougher than ever as Shelton goes for the win in his final season. The show's innovative format features five stages of competition: Blind Auditions, Battle Rounds, Knockouts, Playoffs and Live Performance Shows. During the Blind Auditions, the decisions from the coaches are based solely on voice and not looks. The artists' family and friends watch their Blind Auditions from side stage with host Carson Daly, cheering on their loved ones and hoping for a coveted chair turn. Returning this season is the block, which adds another layer of coach competition during the Blind Auditions. The coach chairs each have an extra set of buttons with the other three coaches' names on them, which prevents a coach from adding a new artist to his or her team. The coaches can use their block buttons only on one artist for the entire first round of the competition. The blocked coach only discovers they are blocked if they press their button, and though their chair will still turn, their lane lights up with "BLOCKED." If the coach doesn't press their button, the block is still available for another audition. Once the teams are set, the battle is on. The stakes are even higher for the artists because there are no steals available. Once the Live Performance Shows begin, the top artists will compete against each other during live broadcasts. In the end, one artist will be named "The Voice" and will receive the grand prize of a recording contract. "The Voice" is a presentation of MGM Television, Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, and ITV Studios The Voice USA, Inc. If more than one coach pushes the button, the power then shifts to the artist to choose which coach they want to work with. If no one pushes their button, the artist is eliminated from the competition. The stakes are even higher for the artists because there are no steals available. Once the Live Performance Shows begin, the top artists will compete against each other during live broadcasts. In the end, one artist will be named "The Voice" and will receive the grand prize of a recording contract. "The Voice" is a presentation of MGM Television, Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, and ITV Studios The Voice USA, Inc. One organization Ian has served is Hope Rocks, a New York organization that supports those who are struggling with addiction, depression, and social isolation. On tonight's show, we are highlighting Ian's journey to sobriety and the passion that keeps him moving forward. Performing songs like "Dust in the Wind" by the group Kansas, "Going to California" by Led Zeppelin, or “Shooting Star" by Bad Company. Because the music comes first, and Dan Shafer will always be a fan, the audience will find themselves singing along, escaping life for a moment, going back to a simpler time, and one of the greatest periods of Rock and Roll Music. Dan shares with us his story, how he pounded the pavement in NYC to get his first gig recording jingles, to moving to Nashville to become a session player, to his ability to work the room when performing live. Quotes on Dan Include: "You are the best male singer to come along in a while!"  - Kent Wells (Producer, Dolly Parton),  “57 year old Dan Shafer traveled across the country to Los Angeles to appear on the Voice. After years of singing jingles, Dan stepped out on the stage and blew me away with Trains “Marry Me”. His cover gave me chills and he sounded better than some of the male Artists on top 40 radio” - Jakes Takes, Hollywood Insider,  “I'm so happy for Dan. He is an image of hope for everyone, to never give up on your dreams, never ever, ever!!!” - Miley Cyrus The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived).
