WNXP Nashville Artist of the Month Annie DiRusso pretty rapidly went from fan to friend and collaborator of fellow Music City artist Ruston Kelly. This month both DiRusso and Kelly released albums featuring the other one, and hosted hometown shows where they were special guests. Here's the tale of two songs, more or less, stories straight from their mouths and sound from each of their concerts.
This is an encore presentation of a previous episode, originally airing in August 2023. --- The two sounds Tommy Prine says he remembers most growing up were having the AM radio on or his father (renowned singer/songwriter John Prine) workshopping tunes at the kitchen table. Journeying through adolescence, his eclecticism later manifested through acts like Outkast and System of a Down. But now, on the heels of This Far South — his debut album — Tommy has found his own unique voice that marries his mom's Irish wisdom and his dad's dry Midwestern/Southern wit. On today's show, Tommy shares why Radiohead's “Videotape” speaks to him, his experiences working with Nashville talents Ruston Kelly and Gena Johnson on This Far South, and how the artwork for this album feels like both an ending and a beginning. We have a special episode this week - we are sharing Sarah Jarosz's conversation on Basic Folk podcast! Sarah is a multi-Grammy winning mandolin player and songwriter who has collaborated with the likes of Chris Thile, the Live From Here house band, Bela Fleck, Daniel Tashian, Ruston Kelly, and Natalie Hemby. In this conversation, Sarah and hosts Cindy Howes and Lizzie No talk about her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. An overall theme of this conversation is that Sarah never lost sight of her goal: keeping it all about the music and don't let noise get in the way of your important work.More on Basic Folk:Basic Folk, honest conversations with folk musicians, features hosts Cindy Howes and the musician/known communist Lizzie No. The podcast approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who've both been through some tough times and emerged all the better for them: Ruston Kelly and Sasha Alex Sloan. There was no disguising the fact that Ruston Kelly's third album, last year's The Weakness, was deeply informed by his divorce from singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, with lines like “My marriage ended and I moved up north to mend.” But the album isn't weepy or wallowing; in fact, it's musically the most lively piece of Kelly's catalog so far, sonically bigger and wider than anything he's done before. It's one of those close-one-door-and-other-opens kind of records, at times contemplative—he once cheekily described his music as “self-help rock”—but also not afraid to be playful and catchy. The other half of today's conversation is Kelly's pal Sasha Alex Sloan, whose early career was kind of pop-focused. She had a co-write on a Juice WRLD song and did a huge duet with Sam Hunt that's alluded to in today's chat. But in spite of her pop leanings, Sloan's music always has an undercurrent of self-examination. She left the major label that had released her first two albums recently and fully embraced a more inward-looking style for the new Me Again, which leans toward simplicity more than her past records. It's still catchy as hell, of course, just with a more mature edge. The album also features a duet with Ruston Kelly on the fading-relationship song “Falling Out Of Like.” Check it out. In this candid conversation, Kelly and Sloan talk about the vulnerability of making music—and how Sloan is handling the anxiety of putting out a less pop-oriented set of songs. Kelly talks about the pros and cons of a recent stripped-down tour he did, and they both reflect on the challenges of opening for bigger artists. We also get thoughts on nicotine, Shark Tank, and more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:22 – Start of the chat 6:40 – On parental TMI 13:37 – Sloan's concerns about whether her new record is as commercial as her past work 24:05 – Kelly's recent bare-bones tour, and what he learned 31:50 – "I feel icky talking out financial sh-t as an artist" 41:03 – “There were some 14 year olds there. There are braces happening. I'm up here singing about hardcore drug addiction.” Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ruston Kelly and Sasha Alex Sloan for chatting. Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with Sasha Alex Sloan Sasha Born and raised in the Boston area, writing songs as a teenager and was accepted to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, but her schooling was cut short when, at 19, she signed a publishing deal and moved to Los Angeles. Sloan released her first EPs, Sad Girl, Loser, and Self-Portrait in quick succession, followed by her first two albums, Only Child and I Blame the World. Last year, a month after she played Coachella, Sloan announced that she was leaving her major label and going independent, news that would surprise anyone observing her from the outside, thinking she'd really made it. Written and recorded in Nashville, where she now lives with her husband and their many pets, Sloan's third album, Me Again is a self-portrait. Aside from a few collaborative sessions with choice songwriters she trusted, like Joy Williams (the Civil Wars) and Ruston Kelly, Sloan wrote the entire album with her husband, King Henry, picking up a guitar or scribbling down a lyric as they went about their life as a couple. Sloan was determined that the instrumentation not distract from the plainspoken admissions in her lyrics, making the album feel like a conversation between intimates. Since his last visit to Vinyl Emergency in August 2020, Nashville singer/songwriter Ruston Kelly has narrowly escaped a fiery bus explosion, sold off nearly every physical stage piece from his last tour, and rehabbed an old Victorian bungalow with his own two hands. And while all of these experiences are worth talking about, today he says that being a better listener has been a focused priority as of late. This deliberate intention to say less and observe more has led to a run of rewarding collaborations over the last several years: Duets with Caitlyn Smith and Judah & the Lion, co-producing an LP for John Prine's son Tommy, and touring with the massively-popular Noah Kahan. On this week's episode, Ruston dives deep into the first album he remembers as a child, why he sequences songs specifically for vinyl, and his upcoming EP -- Weakness, Etc. -- a combination of new material and reworkings from his third full-length The Weakness, released last year. Plus, anecdotes on sharing toast with Jackson Browne, and debating Pop-Tarts with his fans. Ruston's upcoming solo acoustic tour begins later this month. Tickets, social media and more are at rustonkelly.com, with Weakness, Etc. dropping March 22.

Sarah Jarosz is what happens when young women are taken seriously. A huge part of the mandolinist's story is that she had supportive male mentors and that has added to her confidence. We all know the age old story of “Young woman shows promise, gets exploited by the patriarchy and it affects her work.” We need to hear stories like this. Starting in her hometown of Wimberley, Texas, just 45 minutes outside of Austin - the live music capital of the world, Sarah found the mandolin at ten years old. Labeled a prodigy and thanks to the encouraging spirit of folk music, she found music mentorship with seasoned professionals like David Grisman, Ricky Scaggs, Tim O'Brien and Bela Fleck. After her time at The New England Conservatory of Music, she moved to New York and would go on to collaborate with people like Chris Thile in the Live From Here House Band and her trio I'm With Her, featuring Aoife O'Donovan and Sara Watkins and won four Grammys. After making the move to Nashville, on her latest album, the very impressive and sonically expansive Polaroid Lovers, Jarosz collaborated with producer Daniel Tashian, which originally was just a low-stakes co-writing project. The success of her first co-writing experience with Daniel led her to pursue other songwriting sessions with Ruston Kelly and Natalie Hemby. The collaboration found on the record has opened Sarah up to new sounds and new experiences. In our conversation, we talk about Sarah stepping into her own voice with confidence on this record and knowing her musical self enough at this point in her life. She describes her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. An overall theme of this conversation is that Sarah never lost sight of her goal: keeping it all about the music and don't let noise get in the way of your important work. Also! To record West of It All, the duo was joined by producer Brad Cook on bass, drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger). Signed by ATO Records while undergrads, the Texan duo wrote West of It All as graduation loomed in the distance, funneling the stories of their college experience — from heartbreak to hard-won lessons to weekend trips into the rural countryside — into a raw, rugged blend of classic and contemporary influences. The result is a collection of 10 songs with folksy hooks and bold songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation. Formed at University of Texas at Austin, Briscoe quickly went from college gigs to selling out Antone's and the Continental Club Gallery. As Briscoe continued to perform and grow their fanbase, a wider audience began to take notice. They soon opened shows for Noah Kahan and Ruston Kelly and were selected for dates with Zach Bryan and Caamp. After recently graduating from UT, Briscoe has had a packed touring summer filled with festivals alongside some of music's biggest names — Bonnaroo, Winnetka Music Festival, FairWell Festival, Catbird Music Festival, and Iron Blossom Music Festival are a few. The band is currently headlining a tour this fall to support West of It All. The two sounds Tommy Prine says he remembers most growing up were having the AM radio on or his father (renowned singer/songwriter John Prine) workshopping tunes at the kitchen table. Journeying through adolescence, his eclecticism later manifested through acts like Outkast and System of a Down. But now, on the heels of This Far South — his debut album that dropped earlier this summer — Tommy has found his own unique voice that marries his mom's Irish wisdom and his dad's dry Midwestern/Southern wit. On today's show, Tommy shares why Radiohead's “Videotape” speaks to him, his experiences working with Nashville talents Ruston Kelly and Gena Johnson on This Far South, and how the artwork for this album feels like both an ending and a beginning. In this week's episode, Sid Evans, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living Magazine, chats with Ruston Kelly, a singer-songwriter with a remarkable talent for channeling his life experiences into his music. Born in South Carolina, he moved all over with his family, eventually ending up in Belgium before he moved to Nashville to start his career. But before that, he pursued a figure skating dream that left him feeling alone, but also led him to writing songs. Since then, he's struggled with addiction and was married to one of the most famous women in the music business, Kacey Musgraves. But most recently, he moved away from Nashville to spend the pandemic working on a historic house as he also wrote his new album, ‘The Weakness.'
