Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast
Alex Ross and Steve Darnall on Uncle Sam

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

Sneak into any comic book geek's home, and you'll probably find copies of Marvels and Kingdom Come. What about Uncle Sam, though? The series hit shops in 1997 from DC's Vertigo label, and it sparked provocative thought from those who read it, but for whatever reason, it did not resonate as soundly within the direct market crowd as Alex Ross' more recognizably superheroic collaborations. It's time to reconsider Uncle Sam, just in time. We're months away from a critical American election as of this writing. The stakes are high. Our fears are even more so. Democracy is under threat and as fragile as it always has been. There is the America we tell people about and the America we actually live inside. There is the dream, and there are the dreamers. Uncle Sam, written by Steve Darnall and illustrated by Alex Ross, challenges its readers to accept our America and its violent history while encouraging us to shape it into what we want it to be. Yes, it's depressing to encounter a tale published in 1997 that's relevant to 2024 readers. The depression is the point. Democracy is a neverending battle; the only cure for exhaustion and apathy is action. Uncle Sam is what filmmaker Boots Riley would call a "rallying cry." Let's circle it, make community, and do something. Hope is not passive; it's active. We're beyond delighted to have Alex Ross back on the podcast this week. This time, he's joined by his writing partner, Steve Darnall, and we dig deep into Uncle Sam. What was their compulsion to explore this icon, why are they fighting to bring their book back into bookstores, and how would they write Uncle Sam today? In our introduction, we also celebrate the life of artist John Cassaday, who left us far too soon at 52. Cassaday profoundly impacted our early comic reading relationship, bringing us together and launching our Graphic Novel Book Club, which we consider Comic Book Couples Counseling Version 1.0. The artist represents the best of what this medium can do, and his legacy lives on in us, his readers, and those who create in his wake. Our heart breaks for his friends and his family, and we offer them our love and gratitude for sharing John with us while they could. Uncle Sam is now available from Abrams Comic Arts and DC's Black Label. You can find Alex Ross on his Website, Twitter, and Instagram. Obscura takes place in Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania) in the late 19th Century. The story concerns one William Morier, the son of a mortician. Wiliam's wife, Catherine, is diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, so they decide to raise the money they need to help her by running a scam on the rich. The scam? To photograph the spirits of the recently deceased with their families. However, this ruse is not the first one that Catherine has committed. As their grift grows, they draw the attention of a local constable who bullied William when they were children. Finally, as William and Catherine's plans start to unravel, so does Wiliam's sanity.Dennis, Johnny, and guest host Jake begin by chatting about the bullying and isolation William suffered as child and how it may have effected him as an adult. EPISODE 63Greetings, Explorers! Lend me your ear for our season 4 finale and we'll review you a graphic novel called Fab4 Mania. The story was written and illustrated by Carol Tyler. Fantagraphics Books published the story in 2018. The story is a recreation of Tyler's childhood diary and her love, -nay, obsession- with The Beatles as a 13-year-old girl in 1965. Her dream throughout the book is to see The Beatles live.Frankie, Dennis, and Johnny start by discussing the similarities (and differences) between My Favorite Thing Is Monsters to Fab4 Mania. For instance, both stories were published by Fantagraphics Books and share perspectives of being told by children. Secondly, Frankie tells tales about the legendary Chef-Boyardee Pizza Pie Kit from the 1960s. Finally, they discuss how Splendor in the Grass did for pizza what 9 1/2 Weeks did for ice cubes.Further topics include the difference between parenting in the 60s versus the 21st Century; the parallels between The Wonder Years, Stand By Me, and Fab4 Mania; if Frankie and Johnny's love of Paula Abdul compares to Tyler's love of The Beatles; and last, but not least, the storytelling and art of Fab4 Mania.Audio Book Club, Book Club, Carol Tyler, Comic Book, comic book podcast, Comic Books, Dennis Supachana, Fantagraphics Books, Frances Preziosi, Frankie, George Harrison, GNEC, Graphic Novel, Graphic Novel Book Club, Graphic Novel Explorers Club, Graphic Novel Explorers Club Podcast, Graphic Novel Podcast, Graphic Novels, Illustration, John Lennon, Johnny Flores, Paul McCartney, podcast, Ringo Starr, The Beatles, The Fab Four--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Joy of Geek Podcast, Episode 54: Netflix's The Punisher and Alias Grace, Crisis on Earth-X, and GNBC on X-O Manowar Vol. 1 On this episode of the Joy of Geek Podcast, we (Rich and Kevin) try to retain our composure in the lead-up to the release of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and talk about a variety of recent TV, Movies and Comics releases. Our conversation includes the new Doomsday Clock series from DC Comics (AKA the Watchmen sequel), a discussion of the 4-part Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Earth-X, our final thoughts on Netflix Original Series The Punisher and Alias Grace, recent films Coco and Wind River, the new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, our fever-pitch anticipation levels for Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars, and much more. And for the main event we take a deep dive into the wonderful world of Valiant Entertainment. With a new web series on the way (Ninjak vs. The Valiant Universe) and feature films based on Bloodshot and Harbinger on the horizon, it's an excellent time to talk about the rebirth of a publisher whose books are consistently at the top of our must-read piles. We start by discussing the book that re-launched the Valiant imprint, with a Graphic Novel Book Club chat about X-O Manowar Vol. 1: By the Sword, by Robert Venditti and Cary Nord. We'll go full spoilers on the first four issues, and offer some intriguing hints about where the series goes from there. The Joy of Geek Podcast, Episode 50: Nailbiter Volumes 1-6 - Graphic Novel Book Club, Halloween Edition On this requisitely creepy, Halloween Edition of the Graphic Novel Book Club, we (Rich and Kevin) discuss the complete Nailbiter comic series by writer Joshua Williamson (Flash, Birthright) and Artist Mike Henderson (Masks and Mobsters, TMNT). Nailbiter takes place in Buckaroo, Oregon - a town that has given birth an unnaturally large number of serial killers  - and chronicles the adventures of NSA Agent Nicholas Finch as he attempts to unravel the mystery of the town and its most famous creation, Edward “Nailbiter” Warren. Finch's journey is an epic one - spanning 30 issues (or six trades) in total - and we'll be discussing the entire series in this one, SPOILER-FILLED episode. Our conversation includes: the cast of characters, thematic elements, story beats, big twists, plot reveals and unique art style,  as well as two surprising cameo appearances from Brian Michael Bendis and Cassie from fellow Image series Hack/Slash. We also discuss some previous works in the Serial Killer, Horror and Thriller genres - Silence of the Lambs, as a prime example - that clearly served as inspiration for the Nailbiter series. So join us, as we journey to Buckaroo to uncover the true darkness of the human spirit, and (possibly) find out where serial killers come from. Have a Happy Halloween. This...is the Joy of Geek!

First, we dive into Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and discuss all aspects of the film - from the plot and structure, to the characters and performances, to the enigmatic new character EGO the Living Planet - and weigh in on the film's overall success as a sequel. Next, we bring you our second entry in our Graphic Novel Book Club series, this time setiing our sights on the first volume of Runaways by Brian K Vaughn and Adrian Alphona. With the recent announcement of a Hulu original series based on Runaways coming in 2018 and its briefly leaked teaser trailer (which looks amazing by the way), now seemed like the perfect time to revisit the original comic and explore the tremendous impact it has had on comics and popular media since its debut in 2003. We also discuss some of the other comics we've been reading lately, including a number of DC Rebirth titles, Descender, The Fuse, Black Hammer, Grayson, Harbinger, Spider-Man Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy, X-Men: Legacy and Gold, R.L Stine's Man-Thing, and more. And to round out the proceedings, we touch on some recent comic book news. So join us, as we leave behind everything we ever knew, grab the Staff of One, Fistigons and a companion dinosaur named Old Lace, and take on the evil that is The Pride. This...is the Joy of Comics!

The Joy of Comics Podcast, Episode 12: Graphic Novel Book Club - Outcast Vol. 1 Welcome to the inaugural episode of what we hope will become a storied new tradition here at the Joy of Geek - our Graphic Novel Book Club. For each episode, we (Rich, Jordan and Kevin) will choose a graphic novel or trade paperback to read as a group, and then get together a week or two later for an in-depth discussion. For future episodes, we'll also be announcing the book choices in advance on TheJoyofGeek.net so listeners can get in on the discussion too. For our first episode of the GNBC, we're discussing Outcast: Vol. 1 - written by Robert Kirkman with art by Paul Azaceta. Outcast is an ongoing supernatural horror comic series published by Image Comics, and it's the story of Kyle Barnes - a man who has lived most of his life in the shadow of demonic possession. Kyle is an outcast in more ways than one, and soon he is called upon to use his strange and unique talents to battle the darkness and possibly save his own soul along the way.  Outcast was originally conceived by Kirkman (of The Walking Dead fame) as an idea for both a comic series and a TV show, and the first season of the show aired this past summer on Cinemax. We discuss the first volume of the comic series in depth - offering our thoughts on the characters, the narrative so far, the art, and our hopes for the future of the series. We also touch on the pilot episode of the Cinemax series, and examine how closely it adheres to the source material.  So here in the season of Halloween and all things haunted, join us as we venture ever closer to the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. Or rather, as we read a trade paperback and then discuss it in a well-lit room. Either way will work. This...is the Joy of Comics!
