Episode 199!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Superman: Secret Identity"! Collecting the critically lauded 4-issue miniseries written by Kurt Busiek (JLA/AVENGERS, ASTRO CITY) with art by Stuart Immonen (SUPERMAN: END OF THE CENTURY, THOR). Set in the real world, SECRET IDENTITY examines the life of a young Kansas man with the unfortunate name of Clark Kent. All Clark wants is to be a writer, but his daily life is filled with the taunts and jibes of his peers, comparing him to that other Clark Kent -- the one with super-powers. Until one day when Clark awakens to discover that he can fly...that he does in fact have super-strength! But where did these powers come from? And what's he going to do about it? Superman: Secret Identity is a four-issue mini-series written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Stuart Immonen. It was first published monthly, starting January 2004. The title was not released under the Elseworlds banner, but is regarded as a non-canonical story. The story describes the life of Clark Kent, a man in a world in which superheroes exist only as characters in comics, who suddenly gains the powers of Superman and embarks on a super-heroic career, but keeps his existence secret from the world at large. Should I just report the ones I'm familiar with, or is continuing to look for more new and interesting things a good way to expand all our manga/anime knowledge?? ( I feel like I just answered my own question) For Comic Books 0:30:03, we begin with what was NEW this week, arriving in shops March 8th! There's plentiful kick-off's to new series', both indie and "big-two." There are two bits of Comic Book News 0:37:30, one very positive, and one less so. Also, a short discussion of What Happened to Donny Cates? Please note I jest in good humor, please don't send me internet hate over a straight white man, lol. Then the past week's Recent Reads and Events 0:42:12 includes more Lazarus Planet after-shocks, including that awful (awfully cheese-ball) Batman v Robin ending, two Stephanie Phillips kick-offs, and a Stephanie Phillips finale (her Harley Quinn run), plus more! For whatever reason, I've been wanting to go back and finish Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen's Empress (2016; 7-issues), so I decided to make it a feature on this episode 0:54:35. Only when I was doing this write-up did I realize that it was perfect timing, alongside this week's tarot study of the Empress card. Ha! anyway. I give a little summary, but my full summary is on the linked podcast notes. Which brings us to the TV/Movies segment 01:00:34, starting as usual with what was New (to me, at least) and Noteworthy over the past week or so, plus some exciting announcements that includes the screen adaptation of The Good Asian, the 2022 Eisner Award Winner for best Limited Series! And for damn good reason. There's a bit of Anime news 1:06:05, then finally... Mandalorian season 3 episode 2, Chapter 18: The Mines of Mandalore. Folks, it's spoiler city here, and probably isn't a good segment for your kids to overhear, cause this bitch got EXCITED. If you thought I got too sweaty last week, it's in a whole new universe on this one, babyyyyyy! But, I mean, if you watched it, you get it, right? Right?! Come back next week for the 81st episode! The Emperor in Tarot, more MANDO, a new Manga of the Week, exciting new comic reads, and always so much more! Keep it sweaty, folks, It's better that way.  The Yancy Street Discord! https://discord.gg/vRN5NNre -Yancy Street Specials: https://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/full-archive/category/yancy-st-specials -Beginner's Guide to Comics: https://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/beginners-guide-to-comic-books.html   !!Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sensational-she-geek-live-from-yancy-street/id1550410718   !!Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/45qGcYnP147aZBVIHC09lI?si=cb8b8c1a4f8c4ac7   !!Pandora https://www.pandora.com/podcast/sensational-she-geek-live-from-yancy-street/PC:74557   Find me on Instagram: @annawiththecomics https://www.instagram.com/annawiththecomics/   Podcast Updates on Twitter: @savageshegeek https://twitter.com/savageshegeek   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-KoazT-HEFbqCALjxRLjFQ   Website/Blog: https://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/   Donation and All Other Links https://linktr.ee/sensationalshegeek

So about this late upload.....oops? Episode 90 still coming tomorrow, the 9th! Podcast notes for various things referenced: http://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/full-archive/ep89-mando-s3-apostate-the-wallflower-quantumania-steven-yeun-sentry-heckboy-more-news-lazarus-planet-wrap-up  Starting off the week with Tarot Studies 0:04:14, and this week's Card of the Week, #2: the High Priestess. Interestingly, the history of the High Priestess is quite different than that of the Magician last week, in that there are a number of real world conspiracies tied into the card's origin. Plus the three character connection from the Marvel Tarot (2007--and in need of an update, tbh), as well as the High Priestess' character archetype from the Anime Tarot! As this is the first episode of March, I also have a new Tarot Deck of the Month 0:24:17, which for March is the Pagan Cats Tarot, aka Tarot of Pagan Cats! Delightful, artistic, and so creative! The Manga segment 0:26:50 has our very in-depth Manga of the Week: The Wallflower (aka Perfect Girl Evolution)! Also having run as a delightful and popular 25-episode anime, the Wallflower was one of my first manga I read as a teen, and like last week's Boys Over Flowers, will always hold a special place in my heart. Check out the connecting Podcast Notes to see how much I DIDN'T include in the podcast, but is still all there in my write-up! Endless information; I wasn't lying when I said I love this one! That leads into a decent list of New and Continuing Manga for this new month of March 0:40:50, which again, has a much more in-depth version on the written notes linked above.  Once again, the Comic Books segment 0:44:09 starts with what's new and interesting in March, from a variety of publishers, as well as releases I'm just generally looking forward to. After that is the New Comics This Week list--which I feel like I have to casually remind you is only a small portion of all weekly comic releases! Check out your local comic shop or online retailer for a full list of what releases for comics each week. The Recent Comic Reads & Events 0:50:49 segment includes the wrap-up of DC Comics' Lazarus Planet event, which officially ended with Lazarus Planet Omega, but will have further impact down the road, and I'll be keeping up with those aftershocks, as well! Other reads I talk about include, honestly, a handful of things I was underwhelmed by, but I promise that will change with the next podcast episode's comics section, as there is always more to look forward to! The final segment is TV/MOVIES 01:00:45! Starting off with some New and Noteworthy releases and watches, including Outer Banks and Make My Day. We have an amount of very interesting "announcements lite," 01:01:52 such as Steven Yeun's Thunderbolts villain role, the new Pretty-Boy-Hellboy, Something is Killing the Children's going to Netflix, and more, plus some minor rumors. There were two somewhat noteworthy trailers 01:07:04 put out last week, including Peter Pan and Wendy, and the Haunted Mansion, both of which get a mention. Anime News and Updates 01:08:53 is mostly my current watch-list and things that I'm enjoying this season. The main event is the shows! Beginning with a little bit on the surprising (to me) Mayfair Withes Finale 01:09:30 before getting into the excitement of Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 1 01:11:35, titled Chapter 17: the Apostate. We get into easter eggs, references, the trilogy of trilogies (I'm talking about prequels, originals, and sequels), plus Book of Boba, and the Clone Wars and Rebels animated shows, because it's all involved here! We're getting peak Star Wars, and yes I know how that sounds! Reign it in, Anna. I just really love Star Wars. And this is getting sweatyyyyy. Aaaand then I Finally watched Quantumania 01:22:26, and I can't say I disagree with many of the naysayers. It was....not great. MCU Fatigue central, anyone? And BOY, Bill Murray does not sit well with me anymore, jeez. The whole thing was just a little.....it was a lot. Yeah. But not all bad! I had things I liked, to be fair, so that's all discussed.  Come back later this week for episode 90! Including the 18th Chapter of the Mandalorian, a new Manga of the week and tarot card lesson, comics news, and more! PLUS: a special look at Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen's EMPRESS (2016)! All that and more! Keep it sweaty, folks.  The Yancy Street Discord! https://discord.gg/jYxwnv5H  -Yancy Street Specials: https://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/full-archive/category/yancy-st-specials -Beginner's Guide to Comics: https://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/beginners-guide-to-comic-books.html   !!Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sensational-she-geek-live-from-yancy-street/id1550410718   !!Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/45qGcYnP147aZBVIHC09lI?si=cb8b8c1a4f8c4ac7   !!Pandora https://www.pandora.com/podcast/sensational-she-geek-live-from-yancy-street/PC:74557   Find me on Instagram: @annawiththecomics https://www.instagram.com/annawiththecomics/   Podcast Updates on Twitter: @savageshegeek https://twitter.com/savageshegeek   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-KoazT-HEFbqCALjxRLjFQ   Website/Blog: https://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/   Donation and All Other Links https://linktr.ee/sensationalshegeek

We're happy to welcome Karl Kesel (@karlkesel) back for his annual visit to discuss the latest Impossible Jones kickstarter. At the time of recording, there were two days left in the Impossible Jones / Polecat Kickstarter, which has been trying to reach its latest stretch goals in the final days. Karl tells about new character Polecat, what he has in common with last issue's guest star Captain Lightning and some of the other new friends and foes in this issue. We also talk about the Even Steven back-ups this time around, with new origin stories being written by Alex Segura and Gail Simone. Karl also updates on us the state of the latest Section Zero project, on which he and Tom Grummett are still working. If you listen before the deadline, you can still pledge at impossiblekickstarter.com. We also talk about some of Karl's older work, starting with Final Night, the 1998 DC mini-series he created with Stuart Immonen, the Amalgam and Unlimited Access books and some of the projects he worked on with the late George Perez, including the great History of the DC Universe, written by Marv Wolfman, drawn by George and inked by Karl. We also discuss, in a wonderfully nerdy way, the differences between DC's Who Who and the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. The complete former web comic is now fully collected and is AdHouse Books final offering. Back in the early 2000s, the Wachowski siblings founded Burleyman Entertainment. Their breakout comic was Geof Darrow's Shoalin Cowboy. However that imprint also included the comic Doc Frankenstein drawn by Steve Skroce. Now all 6 issues are collected with 60+ pages of new material all in a deluxe over-sized hardcover from Burleyman. The pod returns with a guest we have been trying to get on for quite a while. Longtime comics creator Karl Kesel (@karlkesel) is here to discuss his current Kickstarter project Section Zero 1959, a continuation of the series he and Tom Grummett started almost 20 years ago. We talk about the creation of that series in 2000 and its return as a Kickstarter project in 2017., with the hardcover out now and the story being serialized by Image Comics in April. We talk about the book's inspirations , notably the work of Jack Kirby. (I interviewed Karl way back in issue 27 of the Jack Kirby Collector about his love of the King and some of his more esoteric characters). We also do a deep dive into Karl's career, featuring some of our favorite books over the last couple decades. We chat about a few books he did with Stuart Immonen, Adventures of Superman, the Fantastic Four Annual from 1998 and the DC event series Final Night. We also discuss one of my all-time favorite (and all too brief) comic books series his run on Daredevil with Cary Nord.On the day of our interview, Section Zero 1959 had two weeks left to go in its Kickstarter campaign and was just over 80% funded. For information on the book and some very cool incentives if you pledge, head over to SectionZero1959.com.Two other pieces of business: We will soon be starting our series on the website called High Wire Act, which is an episode by episode break-down of the classic 1960s spy show Danger Man (aka Secret Agent). We hope to have a pod up soon discussing that with a returning podcast guest. Also, we are in talks to do our first convention in a few years in the summer. If we do the show, we will likely have a new issue of the magazine out to go along with the appearance.

The Two Guys with PhDs are back for another Publisher Spotlight, and this time they turn their attention to recent releases from AdHouse Books. On this episode, they look at the publisher's 2015 catalog (so far), but first Derek talks briefly with AdHouse's founder and publisher, Chris Pitzer. He gives the lowdown on the origins of the press, how he translated his designer skills into publishing acumen, the process of artist acquisition, and some of his most notable (and unlikely) publishing successes over the years. After that, the guys plunge into their discussion of the five books that have come out -- or are about to come out -- from AdHouse this year. They start with the new edition of Jim Rugg's Street Angel. Both Derek and Andy Kunka had already discussed last year's Street Angel when they had Rugg on for an interview earlier this year, but this new edition gives the reader a different color experience. Whereas the earlier book contained black and white art, this one sets the illustrations on pink paper, giving Jesse "Street Angel" Sanchez's adventures a whole new feel as she keeps the world safe from ninja gangs, evil geologists, nepotism, and math homework. Next, the Two Guys discuss a truly offbeat book from Eric Haven. Ur is a collection of strange, absurd, and hilarious short comics reminiscent of the works of Michael Kupperman, Evan Dorkin, and Ryan Browne. Highlights include the heroics of Bed Man, Dream Lord of the Night Sky, and the demented adventures of everyman Race Murdock. Without question, this is one of the guys' reading highlights of the week. Next, they turn to the fourth issue of Ethan Rilly's Pope Hats. The guys bring different perspectives to Rilly's work, with Derek having read the previous issues and this being Andy's first exposure to the series. Fans of Pope Hats will find this a different kind of issue. The story of Frances and Vickie is temporarily put on hold while Rilly presents many of his previously published short comics, including the meditative "Stained Glass" and the psychologically moving "The Nest." After that, the guys look at Sophie Goldstein's novella-length work, The Oven. This is an alternate world, post-apocalyptic narrative about living off the grid and how empowering and life-changing such a move can be. Goldstein's simple, evenly paced art reveals  deeper levels of understanding than its small page count might suggest. Finally, Derek and Andy wrap up their spotlight with a discussion of Kathryn and Stuart Immonen's soon-to-be-released Russian Olive to Red King. Much like The Oven, this is a relationship story that unfolds slowly, allowing character to develop in organic and natural ways. In addition to the art, one of the most striking aspects of the book is it's last third, composed almost entirely of text. The guys note that while prose-heavy narrative can be a potential put-off in comics, Kathryn Immonen handles the story brilliantly, using the text to add depth to its more stoic art. Andy declares this one of his favorite books of 2015 so far. In fact, you could say something similar about all of this year's AdHouse books taken together.

I was honored to host this spotlight panel focusing on the careers of Kathryn and Stuart Immonen from their beginnings in the late 1980's black and white independent comics scene in Toronto.  We talk about their first joint project Playground a punk rock murder mystery , and subsequent work for Vortex Calibre and Revolutionary Comics .They also go in-depth about their new graphic novel Moving Pictures from Top Shelf, which collects the entire story that was first presented as a weekly web comic. Stuart discussed how he arrived at the style for the web comic, which he could conform to without straying too far from his daily drawing style for books like Ultimate Spider-Man and New Avengers .  You'll also hear about their next collaboration which is just getting started called Russian Olive To Red King. You'll hear about Kathryn's latest writing efforts  from the recent weekly 5 part mini series Heralds for Marvel , her Shamrock story in Girls Comics drawn by Colleen Coover, and call backs to her work on Runaways with Sara Pichelli and Hellcat with David LaFuente . Kathryn promises more Patsy Walker/Hellcat in the near future. Stuart also discusses the prospects of more Nextwave from himself and Warren Ellis, and his current work on New Avengers with Brian Bendis.
