We are taking a little time to gear up for the next round of episodes from Pass The Mic but did not want to leave you hanging. We've got back to back hits from the archives for you to enjoy in the meantime. New episodes return Feb 5th. With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.  Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was recently recognized as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video, “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown's death at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri police. Dr. Moss was named to the inaugural Root 100, a list that “recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions,” according to the publication's website. Honorees range between ages 25 to 45 and their accomplishments and successes transcend media headlines or statistics. With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Dr. Moss' creative Bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses, at conferences, and churches across the globe. He is highly influenced by the works of Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson, Howard Thurman, Jazz, and Hip-Hop music. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the pastoral ministry of his father, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, have been primary mentors for his spiritual formation. The founder of Unashamed Media Group, a justice centered, faith-based agency committed to producing and curating stories to inspire the heart and challenge the mind, Dr. Moss is the recipient of a 2016 NAACP Image award for his work, which includes providing biblical context and theological support to a myriad of groups and causes, including the #BlackLivesMatter and the #Occupy movements. His earlier publications include: Redemption in a Red Light District, and The Gospel According to the Wiz: And Other Sermons from Cinema. He co-authored The Gospel Re-Mix; How to Reach the Hip-Hop Generation with three other contributors, and Preach! The Power and Purpose Behind Our Praise, with his father. Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama – the true birthplace of Mardi Gras, Justin “Chef JRob” Robinson brings a cajun kick to the Atlanta, Georgia culinary scene. Though his culinary resume is quite impressive including being selected to compete in the latest MasterChef with Gordon Ramsay and working as a personal chef for R&B singer Monica Brown, rather than attending culinary school, Chef JRob actually earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Auburn University and a Masters of Public Health from Mercy University. In fact, in addition to being a chef, Justin is also a tax preparer and traveling phlebotomist. His hustle is real! His love affair with cooking was ignited out of the necessity to cook his own food in undergrad. What started as cooking his own meals on hot plates turned into creating brunch experiences for his fraternity’s signature lady’s appreciation events. Today, Chef JRob caters for events both large and small, offers meal plans, and meal prepping services among many others. A few points he shares: 1. Surround yourself with like-minded people and those who want the best for themselves and for you. 2. Go after what you want and work for it. Seek out internship opportunities while in college. They are not going to come looking for you. 3. It’s hard after graduating from college; it’s all on you. 4. Find your passion as early as possible but also honor your own timeline in executing – especially when it comes to considering whether to quit your job or not. 5. Hey there, podcast listeners. Today, May 5th, some news was brought to my attention that relates to a recent episode of The Children’s Book Podcast. Author Junot Diaz faces sexual conduct allegations and an overwhelming number of women shared their own testimonies through the #metoo hashtag over the past 24 hours. Junot Diaz was featured on a recent episode of the podcast along with illustrator Leo Espinosa for ISLANDBORN, a picture book the did together. I have since removed that episode from the archive and updated the blog post promoting the episode to include this message. I, Matthew Winner, and The Children’s Book Podcast will not support the works of individuals accused of misogynistic acts, sexual predation, or any other offense against women. That behavior is intolerable and individuals recently or historically exhibiting that behavior are not welcome here.   I welcome you to listen to my conversations with some exceptional Latina authors and illustrators, including Juana Martinez Neal, Monica Brown, Margarita Engle and Emma Otheguy.   Thank you.

Amanda and Jenn discuss Moroccan authors, secret societies, nonfiction audiobooks, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert and our library cart giveaway.   Questions   1. Hi! I'm going on a trip to Morocco in March and I'm looking for some books to read to get me in the mood and help me better appreciate the culture/history as I travel. I read most genres apart from sci fi and horror, but would particularly like something in the land of literary/historical fiction or nonfiction. Even better if it is by a Moroccan author. Thanks in advance for the recs and I love the show! --Sara   2. Hi Jen and Amanda! My friends and I have toyed with the idea of starting a book club for years, and I was finally able to corral everyone into one group text to schedule our first meet-up (which will be around mid-January)! All the details have been decided, except for the most important item, which is choosing the actual book that we'll read. My friends believe that, because I reached out and organized the event, I should also have the responsibility of selecting the first book. I can't handle the pressure of this first world problem, so I'm asking for your help. We're all women in our mid-twenties who are in various stages in our careers and personal lives, but we're all in agreement about the genres we're into: romance, mystery/thriller, and travel/adventure. Any suggestions on how to kick off our book club would be greatly appreciated! Bonus points if these books tackle the awkward quarter-life crisis themes that we all experience in our mid-twenties. Thanks! --Colby   3. Hello! I am looking for your thoughts/recommendations on the read harder challenge task of “classic of genre fiction.” I was thinking of doubling up on this task and Oprah’s book club pick “I Know This Much Is True” by Wally Lamb” Would it count for classic ? Do you have any other recommendations for this task ? --Stef   4. Hello, I am looking for novels about things like conspiracy theories and secret societies and such--kind of like the Da Vinci code, but well written (and I guess a bit more "literary"). I tried The Name of the Rose, but found it way too dry, and also didn't like the Rabbit Back Literature Society. I've read and enjoyed all of Marisha Pessl's books, and Mr. Penumbra's 24 hr bookstore. The Dante Club is on my TBR. --Danielle   5. I love the recommendations you guys give. I love nonfiction audiobooks. But I have trouble finding new ones to listen to. My favorites are The Gene and The Emperor of all Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Quiet:The Power of introverts, Grit by Angela Duckworth, and THe End of Average by Todd Rose. I am just not sure where to go from here. I have Isaac's Storm and When Breath Becomes Air on my TBR. --Stacey   6. Hello! I love all things book riot, but especially this podcast! Your recommendations fuel my never ending TBR list, and it brings me so much joy to hear others as excited about books as I am! Now I would love to hear your thoughts on cozy mysteries! I am in grad school right now for occupational therapy, so these light hearted stories (aside from all the murder and deception) seem like something that I could really get into to distract me from my persistent neurofatigue. This is a new genre that I have delved into recently, specifically the magic potion mystery series by Heather Blake. I love the aspects of the small town, hitching post, that is depicted in the series, and the quirky characters. Are there any specific cozy mystery series you guys love? I think I stared at the shelf in the mystery section of the bookstore for a solid hour before I settled on Heather Blake's series. There is so much out there! I need more direction! Thanks so much, --Brittany, tired grad student   7. Hello all! I recently discovered the show and am loving all of the good, odd-to-find recommendations I wouldn't normally have heard of. I am the solo mom of a beautiful toddler who is both American and African (her father is from Ethiopia where I used to live). Do you know of any books that talk about raising strong, proud biracial or bi-cultural children? TIA! --M   Books Discussed I Thought It Was Just Me by Brene Brown Pit Bull by Bronwen Dickey The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits by Laila Lalami The Happy Marriage by Tahar Ben Jelloun, translated by Andre Nafis-Sahely Laila Lalami on Moroccan literature Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube by Blair Braverman (trigger warning: sexual assault) The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff Dune by Frank Herbert Genre fiction classics post One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, translated by Gregory Rabassa The Secret History by Donna Tartt Labyrinth by Kate Mosse The Earth Moved by Amy Stewart Between The World And Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, read by the author, cosigned by contributor Ashley Holstrom A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn Aunt Dimity’s Death by Nancy Atherton (rec’d by Sarah Nicolas) My Two Grannies by Floella Benjamin, illustrated by Margaret Chamberlain Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match by Monica Brown, illustrated by Sara Palacios

October is Black History Month and this week Tracing Your Roots hears from listeners with family ties to the Caribbean. We follow Monica Brown, whose family come from Jamaica, as she makes an emotional trip to Zanzibar, visiting the underground chamber where slaves - including, she believes, her ancestors - were kept in horrific conditions before being sold. She wants to know more about her east African heritage. Rosemarie Barnes also has slavery on her family tree, or so she thinks. Her great great great grandfather (who lived in Essex in the mid-nineteenth century) shares the name of a man who appears on the Jamaican slave register. Were they one and the same person? And if so, how did Edward Andrews get to England? Soldiers from the Caribbean played their part in World War One, but how were they treated in comparison with their white counterparts? And were false promises made to them to induce them to head for Europe? Valerie Vaughan-Dick and Sheena Simpson ask what their ancestors did in the war, and what greeted them on their return home.
