These days teachers are being encouraged to teach with complex or challenging text. This often means teaching students to read (or to learn science or social studies) from grade level texts far above students' reading levels. In the past teachers were taught to change books so students could work at their reading level. This podcast explains how that can be made to work.
This podcast explores the role that guided reading should play in reading instruction and how best to support students during such reading experiences.

The idea of placing students in texts at their instructional level has always tried to provide students with some degree of challenge. The idea has been that kids won't learn from texts the can already read well. But is that level of challenge really beneficial?
This episode explains ways that teachers can enable students to read text successfully for longer.

American Public Media published a series of investigative articles that revved up the Reading Wars. Despite research that has supported phonics-based programs, Guided Reading programs that depend on the three cuing system continue to be implemented across the nation. The APM articles have created a push to expose the ineffectiveness of these programs. Lucy Calkins and Fountas and Pinnell have been targeted in this campaign. It will be interesting to see how much of an impact this movement will have on improving reading education.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/q-talk23/message

In this episode, Belinda Jackson provides a brief overview of guided reading in the elementary classroom, specifically focusing on what it IS and IS NOT. The podcast provides expert commentary via excerpts from an interview with renowned guided reading guru Jan Richardson.
We discuss what is a guided reading group, how to form and set up groups, as well as plan and select texts.
What benefits does guided reading offer when compared to more traditional whole group instruction? How can guided reading be used to better support multilingual learners and foster cultural responsive teaching strategies? How can schools and districts design and implement professional learning opportunities to support teachers as they roll out guided learning strategies? What different factors and considerations should happen at a school in order to successfully implement the lesson study model of teaching? We discuss these questions and much more with our guests from Kingsbury Charter Elementary School in California. Joining me are Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Melanie Sembritski, Superintendent Dr. Wesley Sever, and second grade teacher Kelsi Itturralde. Here are some tips and thoughts for you. Make sure you have an established area in the room to run your guided reading groups. There are lots of things that you will need to have ready, and they need to be stored within reach. When you are teaching in a small group situation it is important to make sure the rest of the class is not going to disturb you or need your attention. The key to getting kids engaged and focused on a recurring activity is to TRAIN THEM. Start slowlyteach only one or two new routines a day. Some of the best teachers I have ever seen or worked with can get their whole class working on different things at their own level with little intervention from the teacher. How do they do this???? ROUTINE ROUTINE ROUTINEWe talk about needing a routine for our class and our kids – what about for the teacher.

Letting children not only choose what they read, but WHO they read it with can be very powerful. It's highly motivating and children love having that little bit of control over what they are doing. And reading with their friends is an excellent technique in any comprehensive reading program. This is perfect for Kindergarten, First and Second grade classrooms.

EPISODE 7 I'm pretty sure it's in every teacher's DNA to research best teaching practices to enhance literacy skills. I also think we often forget to research what we should NOT be doing during guided reading. I'm curious if you've ever done this? There are so many ineffective strategies that I see other teachers using and that I am absolutely guilty of having used as well! I'm going to help you identify the strategies to avoid because, to be honest, they're incorporated into many classroom routines. We think we're helping the student's and in the end we are actually hindering their independence. If you embrace the strategies I've provided, your students will take ownership of critical reading skills on their own. After all, if we're doing all the talking, we're doing all the work. In this episode I share: 5 things you should STOP doing during guided reading How to replace those ineffective strategies Ways to empower our students to feel confident in their reading An important bonus tip for incorporating writing into your guided reading lessons Wherever you are in your teacher journey, remind yourself that you don't have to make all these changes right away.
