Most people read for themselves, which is great. You can improve your understanding, your imagination, your level of interpretation, and also your vocabulary.

5–Minute Parenting: Tips to Help You Raise Competent, Godly Kids.

In today's podcast I'm putting on my teacher hat to share some info about reading skills. I'm sure every parent is concerned about the reported losses in academic gains due to COVID, but there are some things you can do to help you child improve his or her reading skills. I was a special education teacher for many years and have a Master's Degree in Special Education. I taught kids who had learning disabilities and/or ADHD. My suggestions today will be geared more for early childhood and elementary-age students. I will also be sharing some statistics and studies about reading skills.According to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, if a child is a poor reader at the end of first grade, there is a 90 percent likelihood that, without some sort of additional help, they will remain a poor reader when they reach the end of fourth grade. And, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, 32 percent of fourth graders aren't reading at a basic level. Here are two simple ideas to help your child develop and improve their reading skills:Strategy #1 Reading Aloud to Them: Reading aloud to your child is a proven way to promote cognitive development. Young children who have had lots of stories read to them enter kindergarten as much as 14 months ahead in language and pre-reading skills. While listening to stories, children pick up grammar, syntax and general knowledge. They also take in more sophisticated vocabulary.Strategy #2—Reading Out Loud to a Dog: This strategy is geared for elementary-age students who are having reading difficulties. Research has shown that reading out loud to another person can improve overall reading performance in poor readers, but reading out loud to a dog improves reading comprehension even more! This strategy is particularly helpful because poor readers become painfully aware of people around them watching and judging them when they stumble over words, mispronounce words or stop and start frequently. The real casualty is that their self-esteem suffers and so does their motivation to read.So how does this work? 1. Your child chooses a book at their current level of reading competency. (Your child's teacher should be able to tell you that if you're not sure.)2. Your child sits and reads to their dog out loud. The dog provides a nonjudgmental and socially supportive presence which improves your child's self-esteem and motivation to read. 3. While your child is reading to the dog, you or another adult sits next to them and offers help if they need prompting or support with unfamiliar words. These reading sessions don't have to be long sessions—even 15 minutes a week over an 8-week period showed positive results.Reading scores improved by both reading aloud to an adult and a dog, but the canine-assisted reading contributed to greater gains in both oral reading and reading comprehension scores. So grab your 4-legged family member and cozy up for a reading session. This podcast with Jason Peaks a father of four children and Associate Pastor of New Song Church exposes the power of the tongue from a different perspective. Whenever I think of the Scriptures describing the power of the tongue the picture that comes to my mind is the image of a great Orator expounding on important matters of the day. Jason has opened my mind up to the picture of a father reading out loud to his children and changing their lives one word at a time. Sometimes it's the simple things in life that have the most impact. The Father's Heart Media is designed to help people develop connection. What is a better way to connect to children than reading them a good story? What is a better process than a father reading out loud to his children a children's book? What are the indelible memories that are created in a child's mind from these experiences? Come listen to the encounter Jason and I had at breakfast one morning in which the Lord began to reveal the value and importance of reading to children, particularly a father reading to his children. The truth contained in the stories described herein are eye opening, yet very simple and easy to follow and enact in your own life should you choose to experience what Jason has experienced with his children. It will give you a connection with your child like nothing else. Furthermore, maybe just maybe they shall develop a connection with God their Father as well! Come and listen, enjoy and connect again with God Your Father! All our media: podcasts, articles, blogs and Children's Books can be found at www.thefathersheartmedia.com website. 2021.09.14 – 0257 – My Guide To Reading Out Loud, NaturallyHere is my guide on ‘how to read out loud naturally'[1] which I developed as a BBC news presenter and then went on to use while train colleagues in national and local stations across the UK.It's a framework on how to vocalise various constructions of grammar, punctuation and logic which make up most news stories and scripts. Note I did not say ‘rules', because although some sentences can only be read in one way, most can be read in a couple of ways to allow for personal interpretation, understanding and expression. But I did say ‘naturally'. That's because the idea behind this framework is to give the impression of natural speaking, of ‘conversationality', so your reading is both intelligent and intelligible. Don't only read this section. It has to be read as part of the rest of the book. That's because one's tone, and volume and particularly pauses are as much a part of this technique as lifting and subduing individual words and phrases. And during the days that you read it, absorb it and practice the techniques suggested within it, make sure that you listen – not to broadcasters but to real people and how they talk naturally. What words they lift and drop, and importantly, why. Because the vocalisation of words and phrases can sometimes carry more weight than the actual words themselves.OK let's go through this framework so you don't fall victim to mechanical and meaningless recitations or oratorical affectations. [1] With reference to “How To Speak The Written Word” by Nedra Newkirk Lamar, Revel, 1967Audio recording script and show notes (c) 2021 Peter Stewart Through these around-5-minute episodes, you can build yourconfidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection andprojection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mictechniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a careerspent in TV and radio studios. 0203 – Reading Out LoudOf course on radio and podcasts, when you aren't seen, sound is all that you have to create visuals. That may be music or sound effects, and also the words that you utter, but it is your disembodied voice that creates much of the ‘picture' on the kind of the listener.Let's be honest, reading is an unnatural process. We have evolved over millions of years communicating via grunts and then quite recently, by using words. Our ancestors told each other stories and passed on information while sitting around fires outside caves. By comparison, it is virtually only yesterday that mankind started putting squiggles onto pieces of dried wood pulp as an interpretation of uttered sounds and expected others to translate those into speech with meaning. But scripts, especially those for commercials, are not like real-life ‘conversational communications'. For a start, the words are most-likely not yours and yet you have to present them as though they are, and that you're making them up in the moment. But your job is to be the faithful go between, between the originator of the message and the recipient. What follows is simply what you already do in everyday life when you talk with someone. What I've done is break down the elements of conversational speech, so we can use those same ‘talking tactics' when we interpret those strange hieroglyphics on a page or screen and sound similarly ad-libbed. By using these, you will sound natural as you tell people what is going on. The content may have changed from the best place to forage for food to the latest food scare, from the dangers of the sabre-toothed tiger to the danger of terrorism, from how to make a big sail to how to save at a big sale … But the way the tales are told will sound the same: conversational.Audio recording script and show notes (c) 2021 Peter StewartThrough these around-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection and projection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a career spent in TV and radio studios. Connections: A Podcast of the James L. Hamner Public Library

The importance of reading is touted so pervasively, that sometimes it seems as if reading is counted as a virtue like honesty or compassion. In this episode, reading educator Amy Alvut and Jill attempt to explore this idea, but constantly return to ways in which reading is beneficial. For this episode, "reading" refers to reading for pleasure, not functional reading. Functional reading is the ability to read and understand bills, job descriptions, and the like. Pleasure reading indicates voluntarily reading a book as a form of entertainment.Contact Us: circulation@hamnerlibrary.orgFeatured Resource: Notary ServicesOther Resources:The Benefits of Reading Out Loud to Your KidsEpisode 42, "I Like Them Short"Everything You Know About Passion is WrongFakers by H.P. This week, I'm answering some questions about reading out loud: What is our reading out loud process? Should we have a time (for reading) built into the flow (of our day)? What if this time crowds out other projects our children are working on individually? How do we choose books?   I talk about Why I never enjoyed listening to books being read aloud as a child How I used to regard reading out loud as the dessert of my kids' education rather than the main course. How we should move over and let our kids occupy the reader's chair How we have to be patient while our kids are learning how to read out loud My reading-out-loud experiment: What happened when I stopped correcting my daughter when she made reading-out-loud mistakes   I also return to the topic of Christmas presents: Do presents belong only to the commercial side of Christmas or do they have spiritual significance? Can we tell others to be generous? Or do we only learn about generosity by experiencing it ourselves?   Show Notes Blog Posts Respecting Kids and Christmas Presents The Reading Out Loud Experiment A Main Course of Reading Out Loud Listening   Instagram stories_ofan_unschoolingfamily   Thank you for listening to this episode. All this week on The Gist, we’re down with O.P.P.: Other People’s Podcasts. In this episode, Luke Burbank from the podcast Too Beautiful to Live explains how he’s built his devoted fans through openness and honesty: “When in doubt, I pretty much just get as emotionally vulnerable as possible. If people are being really, really genuine about their emotions, and if people are talking about how they’re insecure about things, I always find that compelling.” For the Spiel, various staffers from Planet Money recommend their favorite non-NPR podcasts including Longform, The Chris Gethard Show, Creating a Family, Bad at Sports, Reading Out Loud and The Read. Almost everybody has a book that they read and re-read in their childhood. When we read it again as adults it takes us back into the wonderful world of childhood fantasies and dreams.I have a book like that too. In Russian it was called "О чём думает моя голова". Translated into English "What's on My Mind". It's a collection of short stories about 2 elementary school girls, the best of friends. About their everyday adventures, how they made friends, how they took revenge on enemies, tried to avoid problems at school, how they pleaded with their parents to adopt a puppy, and more. Basically, I saw myself in one of those girls. The best part is that the narrator  is one of the girls, and you can really hear a 3rd-grader talking. Kids come alive in the pages of the book. I am lucky enough to have the very same copy of my favorite book with me. Today I wanted to share the first chapter with you. If you are a beginner and cannot follow, don't despair. Simply hearing the Russian speech will aid you in your studies. I am reading at a normal speed.О Чём Думает Моя Голова - читаем вслух
