On this episode of Mind the Gap, Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner are joined by Tom Needham - teacher, school leader, and author of Engelmann's Direct Instruction in Action - to explore what direct instruction really means. Marking the final book in the In Action series, the conversation digs into Siegfried Engelmann's work, from the power of carefully sequenced examples and non-examples to the importance of “sameness,” big ideas, generative content, and tightly designed practice. Tom explains how direct instruction transformed his teaching of English, particularly for pupils who had struggled with writing, spelling and foundational skills, while also showing how its principles apply across subjects from maths and science to history and geography. Along the way, they discuss the philosophical and practical objections to scripted programmes, the role of teacher expertise in curriculum design, and why precise instruction can be a route to greater pupil success, confidence and independence.Tom Needham has been teaching for nearly twenty years. He has previously taught English in International schools in Malaysia and Nigeria; EFL in Bangkok and Harrogate, as well as Sociology, Media Studies and all the Humanities in Croydon. He is author of Explicit English Teaching, and most recently Engelmann's Direct Instruction in Action, which will be available on the 19th of June. Tom is currently an Assistant Headteacher at a school in Charlton.Tom Sherrington has worked in schools as a teacher and leader for 30 years and is now a consultant specialising in teacher development and curriculum & assessment planning. A teacher asked us a fair question: “If direct instruction and practice are working, why change? While presenting at a recent conference, we were approached by a teacher with a very honest question:“I've been using direct instruction and structured practice with great success. My students are doing well. What reason do I have to change?”In this episode, we unpack how we responded and why it's not about replacing what's working—but expanding what's possible. We explore how a balanced approach to math instruction includes explicit teaching, purposeful practice, rich tasks, and number talks—and how each of these elements can strengthen one another when used intentionally.Tune in to hear why this isn't a debate between approaches—it's about building a robust math experience where students can develop fluency, flexibility, and deep conceptual understanding. You'll discover:Why direct instruction and rich tasks in math class are not opposing strategiesHow to integrate number talks, purposeful practice, and inquiry-based learningThe risks of relying solely on one method of instructionHow balance creates opportunities for students to reason, communicate, and make connectionsPractical suggestions for teachers ready to evolve without discarding what already worksNot sure what matters most when designing math improvement plans? While the Ecological Approach has gained massive popularity for its real-world readiness and adaptability, many coaches and practitioners are fooled by randomness, mistaking chaotic "play" for genuine proficiency. The truth is, the Ecological Approach should always be treated as a secondary phase, only applied after mastering foundational skills through Direct Instruction. Skipping this critical step leads to athletes who lack technical precision and crumble under pressure. We also explore how BJJ's ground-based nature allows athletes to "play their way" into a perceived level of skill, giving a false sense of competence. Unlike sports that demand high kinesthetic awareness and technical precision from the start, BJJ can make practitioners feel proficient without truly mastering the fundamentals.
