In 1921, a man named Harry Pace started the first major Black-owned record company in the United States. He called it Black Swan Records. In an era when few Black musicians were recorded, the company was revolutionary. It launched the careers of Ethel Waters, Fletcher Henderson, William Grant Still, and Alberta Hunter, artists who transformed American music. But Black Swan's success would be short-lived. Just a couple years after Pace founded the company, larger, wealthier, white competitors started to take an interest in the artists whose careers Pace had propelled. Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company. As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education. Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats' Women's Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy. Laura “La La” Key is a powerhouse vocalist, livestreamer and active Real Estate professional. She has managed a major live-streaming App and teaches courses in social media promotion. When she is not busy making joke memes, cussing out politicians or cooking amazing gourmet dishes, she travels the globe recording and performing original music with her artist husband. Most recently the pair traveled to Rio de Janerio, Brazil and Porto, Portugal to perform vocal parts in the studio for their latest album release. Today we discuss the first black owned recording company Black Swan Records which sold popular music to black audiences. Its existence was brief, it was only active for two years from 1923 to 1925. During this time however, the label released over 180 records - more than any other black owned record company until the 1950s. Today we'll talk about the historical context in which the founder, Harry Pace, began and operated the label with mentor W.E.B. DuBois and how his partnership with Memphis blues man W.C. Handy kicked off Pace's interest in the music industry. For more info and track listing visit www.sonospherepodcast.com @snspod

Harry Pace started the first major Black-owned record label in the U.S., but his achievements went mostly unnoticed until recently, when his descendants uncovered his secret history."A century ago, around the dawn of the Harlem Renaissance, New York City was brimming with music. Black artists like Eubie Blake, Florence Mills and Fats Waller were performing in dance halls and nightclubs including Edmond's Cellar and The Lincoln Theatre. On the next Coffee Conversations with Greg J, We're talking to Bill Doggett renownedBack arts historian about this fascinating story Bill Doggett is one of 4 African American members of The Association For Recorded Sound Collections, an organization compromised of the leading institutions, universities and libraries with notable dedicated Sound and Music Archives such as The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian, Yale, Rutgers, Stanford, UCLA and Manhattan's Rodgers and Hammerstein Archive.Doggett's Early Sound recordings Archive includes many Edison cylinders from the 1890s which were re licensed as flat disc recordings by Columbia and Victor Records. Notably, The Archive includes the only two recordings by the first African American to make a sound recording in 1900, George W Johnson. These recordings are sampled in live demos in his lectures and multi media presentations played on a 1922 Acoustic Senior table top Victrola. ( a suitcase Victrola)The story of early American popular music is incomplete without the story of Black Swan Records and Harry Pace - the first record label owned by African Americans. So many artists of the late 1800's and early 1900's were published by this label and the story of Harry Pace is interesting, compelling and full of surprises.
