Pippa and Zoë have chastised Jonah Goldberg for the recent lack of female voices on The Remnant, so Sarah Isgur has staged a Steinem-style takeover of the show alongside Caroline Criado-Perez to discuss one of Sarah's favorite books, Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men. Sarah and Caroline dig into the glaring gender bias in data science, econometrics, clinical research, and healthcare. Plus: a debate over the potential for a misandrist pendulum swing in the progressive era. Kirsty Young asks the activist and writer Gloria Steinem what advice she would give her younger self.Through the last seven decades, Steinem has been a singular voice and influential thinker for the causes of feminism and equality in the USA. She discusses her breakthrough as a young journalist going undercover as a Playboy Bunny, founding the hugely successful feminist magazine Ms., and her personal stake in the fight for the legalisation of abortion. She also reflects on her unconventional childhood with a father who never wore a hat or had a job and a mother whom she became a carer of at a young age.A BBC Studios Audio production.
We are very excited to share this new episode with feminist icon Gloria Steinem! Ms. Steinem is a writer, lecturer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She has spent decades traveling in this and other countries as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice. She lives in New York City. It was a very fun episode for Annika and Sofia, leading up to it there was excitement and disbelief from family members that they were going to interview Gloria Steinem! Ms. Steinem was a joy to speak with, her stories, insights and advice were so interesting to hear and her humbleness with regard to her place in feminism made us love her all the more. If you believe in feminism and women's causes, this is a must listen episode! A huge thanks to Ms. Steinem from all the Girl Power Guru team!
We have a special announcement about the upcoming winter solstice potluck event in December. We reflect on the challenges the group faced during the pandemic and the excitement around reviving this tradition. The decision to have a potluck instead of a catered banquet is discussed, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and removing financial barriers for attendees. Excitement peaks when plans to invite Gloria Steinem as a keynote speaker for the event are revealed. Douglas shares the process of reaching out to Steinem's team and the unexpected acceptance of the invitation. This news brings immense joy and pride to Douglas as he admires Steinem for embodying humanist values and principles. Shifting gears, We delve into the alarming details of Project 2025, a conservative agenda outlined by the Heritage Foundation. We unpack the extensive proposals that threaten civil rights, democracy, and promote Christian nationalism. From implications on government employees' rights to reproductive health policies and LGBTQ rights, Project 2025 paints a grim picture of potential future governance. We emphasize the urgency of being informed about Project 2025 and encourage listeners to seek varied sources to grasp the magnitude of its impact. We shed light on the unsettling provisions targeting marginalized communities and undermining fundamental rights. The episode ends with a call to action, urging listeners to educate themselves further on these critical issues. Full Show Notes Subscribe to our free newsletter Check out our merch
Despite my appreciation for Yorgos Lanthimos' earlier work, I was not planning on seeing Poor Things. A lot of my feminist friends were not fans and I figured I could skip it. But then I learned that Kathryn Hunter was in it, playing a madam, and I got curious. (I worked with Kathryn on a show in London a while ago so she's very dear to me.) So I watched it. Apparently there was a whole conversation around whether or not this was a feminist film. (Answer: not.) But it is, as my friend said, some men's idea of a feminist film. Which is really not the same. This is not to say that men can't make feminist films. If Lanthimos made a bio pic of Gloria Steinem, maybe that would be a feminist film. (Though maybe not if he chose to focus exclusively on her relationships with men or only her Playboy bunny stunt but otherwise it would be hard to NOT make a feminist film about Steinem.) But while this film may pass the Bechdel test on a technicality (I think the conversation between Emma Stone and Kathryn Hunter was longer than thirty seconds and not about A man – it was about how to service men so… ) I'm not sure I'd give it the point. A film in which a woman is largely on her own in the world of men does not scratch any feminist itch of mine. Women working toward equality and the benefit of other women is the main criteria for that as far as I'm concerned. Ms. Is turning 50 It was in December 1971 that a staff writer for the New Yorker named Gloria Steinem created what would become, the following summer, Ms. Magazine. The December debut was actually an insert in the New Yorker, and it instantly catapulted stynom to the forefront of the feminist movement. Fast forward to 1992. Gloria Steinem wrote a book called The Revolution Within, and that's when she and I sat down for one of our several conversations over the years. So here now, from 1992, gloria Steinem.
It's our final episode of the season, and who better to finish it off with than feminist icon and Abby's longtime friend, Gloria Steinem. Steinem has been a pioneer and leader in the feminist movement for more than half a century. Her political and cultural impact is truly immeasurable, but it's undeniable that she, alongside women like Dorothy Pittman Hughes and Florynce Kennedy helped lay the foundation for the modern feminist movement. She's spent much of her extraordinary life traveling the world: marching in solidarity, giving talks, introducing ideas, facilitating conversations, and most of all, listening. Now, in her 87th year, she says she's enjoying being home for what may be the first time in her long life. In this week's conversation with Abby, we learn about the time they ended up in Botswana on the back of an elephant named Cathy together, how families built on equality can temper political trends of authoritarianism, and what it is that gives her hope about the future of feminism. Tune in to our last episode of the season for a fun and thoughtful conversation between old friends, and we'll be back soon.Follow Gloria on Twitter: @GloriaSteinemEPISODE LINKS Elephants Without BordersAbu Camp Elephant Conservation Gloria Steinem's WebsiteTheosophical Society of AmericaNew York Mag, After Black Power, Women's Liberation, 1969NPR's Fresh Air, Feminist Activist Gloria Steinem, 2020National Geographic, How Gloria Steinem became 'the world's most famous feminist', 2019 Ms. Magazine, The Story of Iconic Feminist Dorothy Pitman Hughes: “With Her Fist Raised”, 2021New York Times, With Plan to Walk Across DMZ, Women Aim for Peace in Korea, 2015New York Times, What I See: Gloria Steinem, Shoulder to Shoulder With Women of Color, 2018New York Times, Gloria Steinem Is Nowhere Near Done With Being An Activist, 2020

Bea Feitler was a graphic designer, art director, educator, and a mentor to young professionals. Originally from Brazil, Feitler eventually found her home in New York City and made a name for herself in the magazine industry. Early on in her career she was named co-art director of Harper's Bazaar along with Ruth Ansel—both having served as graphic designers under art director Marvin Israel (1924–85) who had been one of Feitler's instructors at Parsons. Known for taking chances, Feitler and Ansel pushed Harper's to its limits. Under Feitler's and Ansel's direction, Harper's became one of the first national publications to photograph and feature an African American model. After leaving Harper's, Feitler got involved with Ms., a liberal feminist publication founded by Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes. At Ms. Magazine, Feitler was responsible for many controversial covers including one for a December (Christmas) issue, which featured the slogan “Peace on Earth, Good Will toward People”, revising the historically patriarchal statement “Peace on Earth, Good Will toward Men.” Despite a relatively short career, due to her untimely death at age 44, she made a significant impact on magazine design while also taking a stand for feminism and equality. Hi, Dolly Parton's America fans! We're sharing a new trailer for our new 6-part series The Vanishing of Harry Pace - from the creators of Dolly Parton's America, Jad Abumrad and Shima Oliaee - now premiering at Radiolab. Pace launched the career of Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, inadvertently invented the term rock n roll, played an important role in W.C. Handy becoming "Father of the Blues," inspired Ebony and Jet magazines, and helped desegregate the South Side of Chicago in an epic Supreme Court battle. Then, he disappeared. The Vanishing of Harry Pace is a series about the phenomenal but forgotten man who changed America. It's a story about betrayal, family, hidden identities, and a time like no other. Allebest: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. This past year I watched the TV series Mad Men, which depicts life in 1960's and 70's America, especially focusing on gender dynamics. One of the most striking bits of dialogue - and it wasn't emphasized so at a different time in my life it might have flown right past me without me noticing - happened in a scene set in about 1965 in New York City, when the Civil Rights Movement was starting to really pick up steam, and a woman is talking about how she is not allowed to join certain clubs or be served in certain restaurants or get a room at a hotel or a credit card, and many jobs aren't available to her, and even in the job she currently has she's paid far less than her male counterparts…. all because she's a woman. And one of her male coworkers jeers, “What, do you want a women's march?” The show does such a good job creating the world that you can feel how utterly preposterous that sounded - a women's march. There hadn't been demonstrations for women's rights since the days of the suffragettes, and as we learned from Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique, those feminists were looked down on in the 1950's and 60's. But then as a viewer you also have that dramatic irony of realizing, oh my gosh, the women's movement was about to start but they didn't know that yet! So with that historical context in mind, we're going to start today's episode with a recording from 1970, when that idea of a women's march had become a reality, and thousands of women were taking to the streets to demand equal rights. (Sound clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eP_8a7PSik) That was Gloria Steinem, in a speech at a Women's Liberation March in about 1970, and today we are going to read a similar speech by Steinem, called “Living the Revolution”. But before we start, I want to introduce my reading partner, Amy Pal. Hi, Amy! Pal: Hello! I'm very happy to be here. Allebest: Amy and I met in about 2011, in the same church congregation and our kids attended the same Spanish Immersion elementary school. And fun fact: Amy was my daughter Lindsay's Math teacher for about a year, and I taught her son in Literature circles when he was in 4th grade. Amy is one of the most wise, even-tempered, rational people I know, and I have benefited immeasurably from the hours and hours we've spent talking as we've run together in the hills of Northern California. So can we start by having you talk a bit about yourself? Pal: Sure. So, I was born in California but mostly raised in Salt Lake City. I grew up in a large family - I have one brother and five sisters - and I absolutely loved being part of a big, bustling family environment. I was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormon church, and I'm active in my local congregation. My parents both have professional degrees and both worked in their fields of study. To me, as a kid, my mom was seemingly always around and readily available to me, but she, in fact, worked quite a lot in both paying and non-paying positions. She is a highly accomplished musician. While I was growing up, she was teaching and performing a lot, working on big music projects, involved in a lot of great things. Her job afforded her some flexibility - she could do some of her teaching and practicing from our home, but she also needed to attend committee meetings and a lot of rehearsals. Seeing my mom engaged in worthwhile activities both inside and outside of our home had an immense influence on my understanding of a woman's role in society. And, she certainly provided an example to me of balancing children and career, so I grew up believing that was doable with some planning and a supportive partner. Both of my parents strongly encouraged me to attain higher education degrees. I never considered not going to...

"When Julianne Moore was cast to play Gloria Steinem in Julie Taymor’s 2020 biopic, it was like a homecoming. It’s a part Moore was destined to play. Like Steinem, Moore has never been afraid to fight for justice--she’s an active member of Everytown for Gun Safety and she marched in protest after the shooting at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. As an Artist Ambassador for Save the Children, Moore campaigns to provide healthcare, education, and opportunities to children disenfranchised by natural disasters and global conflict. She’s also a leader of Time’s Up, an organization that stands up against harassment, assault, and discrimination in the workplace. She phone-banked for South Carolina Senate candidate Jaime Harrison, who was narrowly defeated, and later for Georgia Senate candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, who won, flipping the control of the US Senate to the Democratic party. Win or lose, Moore has the same spirit of perseverance she admires in her hero Steinem." Přesně 28. 12. 2020 vydává Václav Rouček své nové, anglicky nazpívané, EP s názvem “fomo and my other friends”, které si i sám celé produkoval. Už v průběhu letošního roku Vašek leakoval, že bude vydávat novou muziku a já jsem pouze čekal, až ono EP dostane konkrétní datum, abych si ho mohl pozvat do Tradeshow. Povídali jsme si o meaningu názvu tohoto projektu, o hostech, o nahrávání s Calinem a Steinem, ale i tom, jaké má EP ambice. A kromě toho jsme se také bavili o rodičovství, hokeji a práci v manGowebu. Donate na Patreon.com. Donate na Tradeshow.cz.

I sat with Gloria Steinem in February 2020 just before the acute wave of the #COVID19 pandemic in New York City. Gloria Steinem is a writer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She was a founder of New York and Ms. magazines. We discuss one of her recent books The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off. Gloria co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Free to Be Foundation, and the Women's Media Center in the United States. She helped found Equality Now, Donor Direct Action, and Direct Impact Africa. For her writing, Steinem has received the Penney-Missouri Journalism Award, the Front Page and Clarion awards, the National Magazine Award, the Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Writers Award from the United Nations, and the University of Missouri School of Journalism Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism. In 1993, her concern with child abuse led her to co-produce an Emmy Award–winning TV documentary for HBO, Multiple Personalities: The Search for Deadly Memories. She and Amy Richards co-produced a series of eight documentaries on violence against women around the world for VICELAND in 2016. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. In 2019, she received the Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum. Gloria is the subject of Julie Taymor's 2020 biopic, The Glorias.
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.11.06.369579v1?rss=1 Authors: Bartsch, A., Ives, C. M., Kattner, C., Pein, F., Tanabe, M., Munk, A., Zachariae, U., Steinem, C., Llabres, S. Abstract: Gram-negative bacteria cause the majority of highly drug-resistant bacterial infections. To cross the outer membrane of the complex Gram-negative cell envelope, antibiotics permeate through porins, trimeric channel proteins that enable the exchange of small polar molecules. Mutations in porins contribute to the development of drug-resistant phenotypes. In this work, we show that a single point mutation in the porin PorB from Neisseria meningitidis, the causative agent of bacterial meningitis, can strongly affect the binding and permeation of beta-lactam antibiotics. Using X-ray crystallography, high-resolution electrophysiology, atomistic biomolecular simulation, and liposome swelling experiments, we demonstrate differences in drug binding affinity, ion selectivity and drug permeability of PorB. Our work further reveals distinct interactions between the transversal electric field in the porin eyelet and the zwitterionic drugs, which manifest themselves under applied electric fields in electrophysiology and are altered by the mutation. These observations may apply more broadly to drug-porin interactions in other channels. Our results improve the molecular understanding of porin-based drug-resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. In this episode, Brooke and Kelsie discuss equal pay. Brooke is a hiring manager-- so her expertise really shines. We talk about what the data shows and means... and why children are such a huge factor in economic behavior. Kelsie offers a myriad of resources that already exist. Kelsie then teaches a bit about the long battle for equal pay and does a deep dive into Ida Tarbell who fought to change the system in her time. The life of feminist icon Gloria Steinem is given the art house treatment in Julie Taymor’s overambitious biography, “The Glorias.” Four actresses play Steinem in various stages of her life, including Oscar winners Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore. While it’s illuminating and relevant, the film skims the surface while indulging in some unnecessary and pretentious […] The post Freeze Frame: “The Glorias” (R), “The Boys in the Band” (R), “Herb Alpert Is” (Not rated), “A Call to Spy” (PG-13), “Eternal Beauty” (R) appeared first on KKFI.
Julie Taymor joins us to discuss directing, co-writing and producing “The Glorias.” Based on Gloria Steinem’s memoir, My Life on the Road, the film stars Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore at different stages in Steinem’s life.
The incredibly talented Julie Taymor is nearly an EGOT- she's won an Emmy, a Grammy, multiple Tony awards, and was Oscar-nominated for her work. She is a playwright, director, songwriter, and costume designer for both the stage and film. Julie is a rare thing- a theater director who can also helm amazing films. She thinks this is because most theater directors are really not very visual- they focus more on acting and dialog. When directing her films, Julie feels it's important to be selective and understand what you can achieve with a camera such as with lenses and lighting, vs. what can be done on a stage like The Lion King with giant set pieces, puppets, props and costumes. Julie's latest film, The Glorias, is a biopic about women's rights activist and feminist icon, Gloria Steinem. Julie worked with cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and many visual effects artists to create several surrealist fantasy sequences in The Glorias. The film has a very imaginative and creative way of telling Gloria's story, through multiple actors playing Steinem at different ages, who speak and interact with each other. In some scenes, the Glorias ride a Greyhound bus together to depict Steinem's interior landscape through the stages of her life. Julie decided to use several different color motifs, working with red shoes as a wardrobe choice and sometimes black and white to help get her themes across. She took a similar approach in the film Frida, which used vibrant colors and specific materials such as chrome and steel to depict the different locations where Frida Kahlo traveled and worked. You can watch The Glorias streaming on Amazon Prime September 30. “I thought a lot about growing up, about finding your own voice, who you are, what you want to do and the struggle of getting there!” We are replaying our interview with actor Alicia Vikander, from this spring, ahead of the premiere of her new film ‘The Glorias’ on Sep 30th (Amazon Prime) We are thrilled to bring you this special and personal conversation with actor Alicia Vikander! She talks to us about starring as feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the upcoming film ‘The Glorias’ (directed by Julie Taymor), about how she has has found her voice and what she wants to do with her Hollywood power! After more than a decade in the industry, and post Oscar-win, Alicia Vikander speaks to Christina about how she is learning to take small breaks and how cooking helps! About her focus and how she and Steinem connected in personal ways. How, early in her Hollywood career, an actress spoke up for her in an uncomfortable, sexist situation and how much that taught her. And how she wants to use her voice and her power to play women from all angles and all dimensions and to get smaller movies with interesting writer/directors off the ground, like her upcoming film ‘Blue Bayou’. And much more!
She directed and designed costumes for the stage version of The Lion King, seen by 90 million people in 100 cities, attributing its success, in part, to its use of puppets. “I actually think people are often more touched by a puppet’s gesture than a human’s.” Make up your own Trump/Putin joke.
122 - The Oldest A Human Has Lived?! TRAILER PARK! ‘The Boys in the Band’ - Our first trailer off the park this week is another Netflix special! Set in New York in the year 1968, a group of outlandish and flamboyant gay men gathers together to celebrate a birthday! They have cake, decorations, several drinks, and chain smoke the house down as they reminisce and share stories of their journeys. Clearly quite a few of them have former love connections together as the tension builds throughout, leading to what I can only describe as ‘the adult gay mans party game equivalent to a teenagers sleepover prank calling the game’. Each man takes turns calling the one person they have truly loved in the past. Whilst sounding silly, the film actually looks like a tense and dramatic event that seems to lead to a gripping finale. Potentially. Coming to Netflix 30th of September. ‘The Glorias’ - Our second trailer this week is one that screams ‘Totally Not Made for Mitchell and Dylan’!! ‘The Glorias’ is a semi-autobiographical film based on the life of world-renowned women's activist and feminist, Gloria Steinem. Telling the story of her fighting for women’s rights and equality among peers, she blazed a trail unlike any other and influenced so many women through time to stand up and make a move. Julianne Moore plays the titular character based on the autobiography written by Steinem. I honestly don’t know what Moore to say except it’s coming to Amazon Prime, September 30th! ‘Possessor’ - Well holy shit. What an unexpected mind fuck of a treat this was! The trailer for the upcoming film Possessor tells of a seemingly gripping sci-fi thriller film centered around a futuristic style of ‘Hitmen’. We find a run of the mill average woman, played by ‘Andrea Riseborough’, as she works for a company tasked with carrying out hits on victims. But the way this is done is by entering a random civilian's mind and controlling their body. Basically making the person who’s body and mind they overtake the killer and leaving the real killer, who’s back in a lab under a mask, free. When she is assigned the biggest hit yet, for some reason she cannot pull the trigger, thus setting off a chain of events leading to the man whose body she tried to control coming to try and hunt her down. Seriously, watch this trailer. Coming to theatres the 9th of October. ‘The Comeback Trail’ - Trailer number 4 this week screams major potential as we see the likes of Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, Morgan Freeman, Zach Braff, and Emile Hirsch all-star in this hilarious dark comedy! Set in 1974, Braff and De Niro lead the way as they star as producers in Hollywood who have gotten in deep with the Mob (led by Freeman) and they owe them quite a bit of money. As they struggle to come up with ways to pay back the debt they concoct a plan: beginning filming a movie, have a big insurance policy on the main star, and then ‘accidentally’ kill him in a stunt and collect the insurance money. Genius! Enter Tommy Lee Jones as the lead star in a western they're shooting. The only issue is, Tommy Lee Jones is a hard mother fucker to kill! Looks like we could be in for a riot of a good time! Coming to theatres 13th of November! ‘Shithouse’ - Trailer Park was created with the express purpose of being able to review big Hollywood blockbuster trailers that everyone knows about and also to bring to light the lesser-known trailers from up and coming writers/directors trying to stake their claim on the industry. This week's‘ film festival favorite’ comes to us in the form of ‘Shithouse’! The story follows a freshman in college who is homesick and not having the college experience he had imagined. One night while crashing on a couch in the dorms, he comes across a sophomore who also seems to be isolated like he is. Together they hang out, share personal stuff and spend the night lustfully lusting over each other. Confused with what the night meant to each other, the journey follows the two as they struggle to understand what that night and each other really mean to them. GLORIA STEINEM. Gloria ACTUAL Steinem. For this very special bonus episode, I had the absolute honour of interviewing one of my all-time heroes, the feminist activist, writer and icon, Gloria Steinem. And yes, I'm still pinching myself. We talk about her failure to understand her mother, her failure to be at her father's deathbed and her failure to learn lessons quickly enough - yes, we go deep... She also talks to me about how, at the age of 86, she is joyfully outliving society's expectations of her; of how fear can often be a sign of growth (let that sink in), about how 'anger is an energy cell', about how we are 'linked not ranked', about not having children, about spending a lifetime combatting misogyny and racism and sexism and injustice, and about the counteracting forces of love and compassion and friendship which keep her going. If you've been watching the Mrs America miniseries about the battle for equality, then this is a MUST-LISTEN, even if I do say so myself. I love Steinem's work so much that I often quote her in my own - the book of How To Fail is a classic example (she's in the 'Anger' chapter) - and so to be given a chance to meet her, albeit remotely, was honestly a life highlight. She did not let me down. In fact, she exceeded my wildest expectations. Whoever said never meet your heroes clearly never met Gloria Steinem. * If you've enjoyed this season of How To Fail, you might like to join me for a livestream event I'm doing on 2nd October to mark the launch of my new book Failosophy: A Handbook For When Things Go Wrong You can book here * The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off, an illustrated collection of Steinem's best quotes, is out now and available to buy here. * How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Naomi Mantin and Chris Sharp. Join our host Marianne Schnall as she talks with feminist icon Gloria Steinem. In this candid and often surprising conversation, Steinem shares her thoughts and wisdom on a variety of topics that are more timely now than ever, and encourages listeners to keep pushing for progress because as she points out, change is not “automatic”— it requires us all to take action. Gloria has deeply impacted the life of our host and we are so honored to bring this conversation to you with a truly legendary woman.
In this episode Kelsie and Brooke introduce themselves and the hysterical way they came together and explain the aims of this podcast: to figure out why women aren't in history curriculum and put them in.BibliographyCollins, Gail.
Episode 87 is the first of a many-headed beast that, hopefully, everyone enjoys and learns from. I explore multiple pieces of media stemming from the tumultuous period of American History, the 1960s and 70s. I introduce to you the series entitled, “Important Women Who Did Important Stuff”! Tonight, along with my best friend and special guest host, Alison, we take a look at the Hulu Original Series, Mrs. America, and give you a glimpse into the lives of the key figures in the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment. We also cover an in-depth lesson on how to share memes with friends on Facebook, and rage over the childish reactions by adults over a young girl's entrepreneurial venture. In the following weeks, I will continue to explore the series, as well as cover the books, The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, and The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off by Gloria Steinem. I will also offer the research I found about our major players, Steinem, Friedan, Phyliss Schlafly, and Shirley Chisholm. Gloria Steinem is not here for the term “white feminism.” On Monday, I spoke to the activist about the changing face of the feminist movement, and how intersectionality has always played a part in it. “[Feminism] is a majority word now, which it never was before, which is a huge change, that it has majority support,” Steinem explained. “But there is also big time backlash opposition to it, which is why it gets to be a ‘dirty word.' But [feminism] is like democracy, really. Deep democracy, that looks at sex and race and class.” And we make fun of it. In the context of this being the core story of this short episode, we also go to some populism, transphobia and rape cutlure.
On today's show I talk to writer, producer and feminist Marcelle Karp. Born in New York, Marcelle met Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel in 1993 while working at Nickelodeon, and the three started a zine called Bust. Bust grew and became one of the flagship publications of third-wave feminism. After leaving the magazine to raise her daughter Ruby, Marcelle has continued to be an icon of feminism and as one of her projects, currently produces the HelloGiggles Presents show at UCB with her daughter. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
