Add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a rocks glass with large cubes of ice. Garnish with the orange rose and rose buds.For the Rose-Honey simple syrup:1 tablespoon dried rose buds1 cup water3/4 cup honeyBrew the rose buds in boiling water for 8 minutes like you would a tea (I used my teapot). Strain 1/2 cup of the tea into a glass measuring cup. While still hot, add 3/4 cup honey and stir well to combine. Let cool completely and keep in the fridge. It will keep for a couple of weeks, and a little longer if you add a bit of vodka to it before storing it. The way Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, a theoretical physicist, sees it, Harriet Tubman is the Great American Astronomer. Using the North Star, with no formal training, Harriet Tubman led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom. Chanda is a night sky expert, too. She's studying the intersections of astrophysics, particle physics, and cosmology, and she's a leading thinker in understanding dark matter—the invisible particles some postulate could account for most of the matter in the universe. In this episode, Chanda shares how she uses science and the stars not just to uncover how amazing our universe is, but to understand and celebrate humanity's shared histories—and struggles. Today on Sojourner Truth we bring you a conversation with Professor Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, Black feminist theorist and theoretical physicist and Selma James, long-time feminist activist and Wages for Housework co-founder, to discuss, "Our Time is Now," an anthology by Selma James and the legacies of inter-generational feminism. Selma James is a women's rights and anti racist campaigner and author. From 1958 to 1962 she worked with C.L.R. James in the movement for West Indian federation and independence. In 1972 she co founded the International Wages for Housework Campaign, and in 2000 helped launch the Global Women's Strike whose strategy for change is Invest in Caring, Not Killing. She coined the word unwaged, which has since entered the English language. In the 1970s she was the first spokeswoman of the English Collective of Prostitutes. She is a founding member of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network. She co authored the classic The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community, which launched the domestic labor debate. Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is an assistant professor of physics and astronomy and core faculty in women's and gender studies at the University of New Hampshire. Her research in theoretical physics focuses on cosmology, neutron stars, and dark matter. She additionally does research in Black feminist science, technology, and society studies. Dr. Prescod-Weinstein is also a columnist for New Scientist and Physics World. Nature recognized her as one of 10 people who shaped science in 2020, and Essence magazine has recognized her as one of 15 Black Women Who Are Paving the Way in STEM and Breaking Barriers. A cofounder of Particles for Justice, she received the 2017 LGBT+ Physicists Acknowledgement of Excellence Award for her contributions to improving conditions for marginalized people in physics and the 2021 American Physical Society Edward A. Bouchet Award for her contributions to particle cosmology, including co-founding Particles for Justice. The effects of the Tonga eruption could be felt around the world, many heard the boom of a sonic shock, and tsunami waves travelled far and wide. Volcanologist Shane Cronin from the University of Auckland in New Zealand is one of only a handful of people to have landed on the tiny islands above the volcano where the eruption took place. Those islands have now sunk beneath the waves but Shane tells us what he found when he went there and how his findings could inform what happens next. Stephan Grilli from the School of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island joins us from Toulon in France where he felt the effects of the shockwave and Tsunami. He says the force of the shockwave drove those waves worldwide. The oceans have continued to warm, producing continuous record temperature rises for several years now. That's the finding of Michael Mann of the University of Pennsylvania and author of The New Climate Wars. He says warming occurred last year despite the presence of global weather patterns which would usually have a cooling effect. The long-term effects of covid-19 on health are a cause of growing concern even though in many places the virus itself now appears to be taking on a milder form. Yale University neuroscientist Serena Spudich is particularly concerned with covid's impact on the brain. She says while the SARS- CoV-2 virus might not be found in brain cells themselves there are neurological impacts. Chanda Prescod -Weinstein is an Assistant Professor of Physics and Core Faculty Member in Women's Studies at the University of New Hampshire, and like anyone, she has an origin story and a mission. She is a monthly columnist at New Scientist and a contributing columnist at Physics World. Read about why she co-led the call for a June 10, 2020 Strike for Black Lives at the Particles for Justice website.Her work lives at the intersection of particle physics and astrophysics, and while she is primarily a theoretical researcher, she maintains strong ties to astronomy. She is a topical convenor for Dark Matter: Cosmic Probes in the Snowmass 2021 process, and she is lead axion wrangler for the NASA STROBE-X Probe Concept Study. Using ideas from both physics and astronomy, she responds to deep questions about how everything in the universe got to be the way it is. Dreams Deferred The story of the post Black Swan years. We follow Harry's Supreme Court battle to desegregate the South Side of Chicago, and then the mysterious decision which forces him into seclusion, before his untimely death. The Vanishing of Harry Pace was created by Jad Abumrad and Shima Oliaee It was Motown before Motown, FUBU before FUBU: Black Swan Records. The label founded exactly 100 years ago by Harry Pace. Pace launched the career of Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, invented the term rock n roll, crafted hits with the father of the blues, inspired Ebony and Jet magazines, and desegregated the South Side of Chicago in an epic Supreme Court battle. Then, he disappeared.  The Vanishing of Harry Pace is a series about the phenomenal but forgotten man who changed the American music scene. It's a story about betrayal, family, hidden identities, and a time like no other. This series was produced in collaboration with author Kiese Laymon, scholar Imani Perry, screenwriter Cord Jefferson, and WQXR's Terrance McKnight. Dr Amber Frazier who is the first black resident  ever to attend psychiatry residency at her residency program at Atrium health and a recent homeowner utilizing the doctor loan along with,  Dr. Denise Hinton who is a former walk on to the LSU track team and eventual all American in weight and hammer throw and current Orthopedic Resident  at Duke doing a research year. We discuss  -their respective challenges as black women in medicine and how they traversed being told no and they couldn't be the physicians they envisioned  -for Amber how residency has challenged her in the most unanticipated ways and for Denise how research has given her a sense of clarity about what she wants to accomplish as a future pediatric orthopedic surgeon  -the importance of team dynamics and how that translates to medicine ( Denise being on the LSU Track team and Amber being part of AKA's)  -why it important to believe in yourself before anyone else  -how their growth prior to medical school provided a foundation for them to be successful in any thing they focused themselves on  -how personal failures taught them important lessons about life beyond medicine  and more.....  Please Share, Like, Subscribe, Comment !

Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is one of the leading physicists of her generation. She is also one of fewer than 100 Black American women to earn a PhD from a department of physics. Her vision of the cosmos is vibrant, buoyantly non-traditional, and grounded in Black feminist traditions. The star theoretical physicist joined us in conversation with STEM educator and PhD student Jaleesa Trapp to take us on a journey into the world of particle physics and the cosmos–and present a call for a more just practice of science. Sharing from her book The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey Into Dark Matter, Spacetime, & Dreams Deferred, Dr. Prescod-Weinstein introduced us to her love for physics, from the Standard Model of Particle Physics and what lies beyond it, to the physics of melanin in skin, to the latest theories of Dark Matter–all with a new spin informed by history, politics, and the wisdom of Star Trek. While love of Star Trek is universal, Prescod-Weinstein and Trapp brought physics into the personal realm, seriously urging us to recognize how science, like most fields, is rife with racism, sexism, and other dehumanizing systems.
