When it comes to making important--and often difficult--choices about care needs at the end of life, sometimes we aren't in a position to speak our wishes out loud or make decisions in real-time. We do, however, live in a time and a place where it is possible to write down wishes in advance, or to designate other people to make medical decisions for us in times when we are not able to communicate or are not conscious. Collectively, those kinds of documents are called "advanced directives," and they allow people to instruct doctors about what kinds of treatments they do or do not want administered in the event they are not able to make those decisions for themselves. And while it can be helpful to have these papers completed and on file, even more important is the conversation with our loved ones about what we want done or not done in difficult future situations. How do we have these conversations? That's where this week's episode of Crazy Faith Talk will take us--so join pastors Sarah, Erica, and Steve in our current series looking at death and dying with honesty and hope.

In this episode, Fight Back covers the critically important topic of advanced healthcare directives, a legal document that addresses such end-of-life issues as “do not resuscitate” orders, treatment options, healthcare proxies, and more. In this emotionally powerful conversation, we hear from Kristen, whose husband J.J. was diagnosed with brain cancer at just 34 years old and given a few months to live. With the help of J.J.'s advanced healthcare directive, Kristen was able to act as her husband's healthcare advocate—fighting for new treatments, second opinions, and facilitating J.J.'s wishes as he went on to live, not for three months, but for three years. Our special guest Ashton Ellis then joins us, who is an expert on advanced directives and attorney who creates advanced directives for families. Ashton is currently working to develop a curriculum that trains doctors and lawyers on how to apply the appropriate standard of care when complying with end-of-life care laws. Our conversation will cover many reasons why a healthcare directive is so important, not only for yourself but for your loved ones too.

Durable Power of Attorney deals with financial matters whereas with the Healthcare Power of Attorney deals with healthcare issues and the person's body.
“The first wealth is health” was the assertion made by Ralph Waldo Emerson and most of us will agree that is the case in life. In a material society, even when individuals chase monetary and material wealth at the cost of their health, there comes a time in their lives that they realize the error of their ways. If health is so important what are some of the things we need to be mindful of? Mindfulness starts with self. How can we develop the quality or state of being conscious and be aware of health and wellness related matters? How do we plan our eating habits? How do we plan our physical activity routines? How do we make time for mental alertness and calm relaxing time as part of our wellness? How do we plan for medical and healthcare emergencies and contingencies? These are all real life matters we must think about, discuss with our loved ones and put in play as a family. A real life experience is shared in this episode so you can take a page to shape your plan.
