It's a not entirely merry episode of Media Path with some hard but cautionary truths about guardianships AND, a new Christmas musical that celebrates our festive diversity.Greg Thirloway and Maurice Godin are launching a new musical called Oy To The World, that celebrates the Jewish composers who brought us so many carol classics like Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Oh, Holy Night and I'll Be Home For Christmas. Then, we're speaking with investigative journalist, Diane Dimond whose new book about the dangers of guardianship is required reading in a Post-#FreeBritney world.Oy To The World: Christmas With A Twist will premiere, December 14-23, at North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre:  Greg and Maurice give us a sneak peak into their new show which takes place at a Catskills lodge where the new owner decides to put on a Christmas show. In so doing, Christmas carol backstories emerge. Did you know, for example that Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer is inspired by writer Bob May being teased as a child about his “Jewish” nose? So, yes, not just Jesus, but also Rudolph was Jewish!Diane joins us to discuss her new book, We're Here To Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong. She shares her extensive research into the dangerously secretive and insular “legal” practices which lead to citizens losing control of their finances and their freedom. The guardianship or conservatorship systems in the U.S. are state-run,largely unregulated and increasingly populated by financially motivated predators. As we've learned from Britney, anyone who has saved some money or who is earning money is at risk. Diane offers shocking examples of the system's dysfunction and the victims and devastated family members left in its destructive wake. Diane also offers solutions and tips for keeping yourself and your family members safe. As a generation of Boomers continues aging, it is vitally important that we address, amend and federalize guardianship law.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new Joan Baez documentary on Prime and Apple TV, I Am Noise and a new crazy cult doc mini-series on Max, Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God.Path Points of Interest:Diane DimondWe're Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong by Diane DimondGuardianship Central ResourcesDiane Dimond on FacebookDiane Dimond on TwitterOy! to the World: Christmas With A TwistUse Code: FRITZ for $5 discount on any performance!El Portal on FacebookEl Portal on InstagramMaurice Godin on IMDBGreg Thirloway on IMDBJoan Baez - I Am NoiseLove Has Won: The Cult of Mother God

To start, Lisa explains why guardianships and conservatorships may be necessary for your family. Lisa then talks about what signs may appear when someone is experiencing a decline in their mental health. Finally, Lisa dives into exactly what the process looks like of going through guardianships and conservatorships. Some families can be apprehensive about the process, and there are other options. Tune in as Lisa explains why an incentive trust could be a better alternative to a typical guardianship or conservatorship.      IN THIS EPISODE:    [04:10] Lisa explains why guardianships and conservatorships are needed. Lisa then talks about what signs may appear when someone is experiencing a decline in their mental health.   [09:20] About the process of going through guardianship and conservatorship.   [15:10] How Lisa works with families who are resistant to guardianships and conservatorships.   [19:05] There's a less intrusive alternative to guardianships and conservatorships: an incentive trust.     KEY TAKEAWAYS:    Guardianships and conservatorships are typically court-appointed. To get one, you will need to file a petition in court.   There needs to be a link between a medical diagnosis and lacking the capacity to make certain decisions.   An incentive trust can be a more suitable alternative to guardianship and conservatorship.   Mental health issues will happen in every single family; it's critical to be prepared ahead of time.     LINKS MENTIONED:    Website    https://www.burnslev.com/professionals/lisa-m-cukier    Business Facebook    https://www.facebook.com/burnslev/    Business Twitter    https://twitter.com/burnslev    LinkedIn    https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisacukier/    BIO:    LISA M. In the episode, "An Interview with Author Rob Wipond on His Book, 'Your Consent Is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatment, and Abusive Guardianships'" (S5, E7), I have the chance to explore my most esteemed topics of psychiatric coercion and forced treatment with one of the major players right now in the field, journalist Rob Wipond. Rob Wipond is a freelance journalist and creative nonfiction writer who writes frequently at the interfaces between psychiatry, civil rights, community issues, policing, surveillance and privacy, and social change. His articles have been nominated for seventeen magazine and journalism awards, and he's the author of the book Your Consent is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatment, and Abusive Guardianships (BenBella, 2023).His insightful book brings to light the broad increase in people being psychiatrically incarcerated,  particularly in the US, Canada, and UK. But why are so many detained and what were the treatment outcomes? The data is limited, but Rob manages to do extensive research in his book compiling the available data in a comprehensive analysis of what is really going on in the mental health system. His research has shown how the numbers stack up-- that we have many more beds in mental health facilities than ever before (despite the overriding assumption to the contrary), and that more and more people are being incarcerated for a widening array of reasons: fromwhistleblowers and political dissidents, creatives and out of the box thinkers, disruptive children in class, elderly people suffering dementia, and workplace mental health cases. What Rob has found is that most people do not improve after these treatments, but rather deteriorate further. Victims of the system become regularly institutionalized or “revolving door mental patients,” and as medicalization, manipulative coercion and forced drugging become the gold standard, our society accepts the status quo of social control, easy fix solutions, and defining things as mental health problems instead of looking at social constructs such as affordable housing and peer-support respites. And once a person is labeled a mental patient, very little they say is taken seriously. As people are losing hope in the system, the mental health industry becomes even more aggressive as they continue to try to rope people in, but Rob gives a voice to the voiceless through the power of his incredible research and his understanding of human suffering. Rob encourages people after entering a non-ordinary mental state to examine their own mental distress and find their own path to self-understanding. Rob openly tackles this controversial topic with character and strength, and his support and compassion regarding those harmed is courageous and empowering to all those who feel betrayed by the system. To learn more about Rob, visit his website at: https://robwipond.com/Or follow him on:Twitter: @robwipondFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/RobWipondAuthorYouTube: @RobWipond/featuredYour Consent Is Not Required (BenBella, 2023) is now available wherever books are sold in hardcover, ePub, Kindle, and audiobook.#mentalillness #mentalhealth #chemicalimbalancetheory #psychiatricincarceration #BigPharma #involuntaryhospitalization #forcedtreatment #wildfloweralliance #suicidehotlinesPlease visit my website at: http://www.notascrazyasyouthink.com/Don't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenConnect:Instagram: @ jengaita LinkedIn: @ jensicilianoTwitter: @ jsiciliano

Dr. Sugar recommended having Advance Directives that state that under no circumstances that you want a guardianship. Also make sure a Health Care POA is in place and a Will. Make your wishes well known to family members as well as  settling family disputes, as Guardianships can start with a disgruntled family member.       There could be an estimated 3-3.5 million Guardianships in the United States and this creates a negative impact on families affected by a loved one being placed into a Guardianship. Families find their money being thrown away in years to multiple decades of litigation affecting their own health and welfare fighting for their loved one.     We discussed the dark history that goes back to Parens Patriae and how in 1929 Equity Courts joined with civil and criminal courts as well as the history of the Osage Tribe and the book written by David Grann, "Killers of The Flower Moon," that goes into more detail on what really happened to the Osage Tribe and how that evolved into the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover. This history of the Orphan Trains were discussed and how churches and others thought it was a great idea to put homeless children onto trains and ship them off to help farmers farm their land.     Prevention is very important, and Dr. Sugar recommends people be vigilant and aware of their surroundings in order to prevent a Guardianship from happening to their loved one and family. To Reach Dr. Sugar: www.aaapg.netsupport the show(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)http://beentheregotout.com/https://monicaszymonik.mykajabi.com/Masterclass  USE CODE SLAM THE GAVEL PODCAST FOR 10% OFF THE COURSEFor 2022 PA Retreat: https://markdavidroseman.com/retreat-registration-form/     For more information, contact co-organizers:Maryann Petri at maryannpetri3@gmail.com Ann O'Keeffe Rodgers at okeefferodgers@gmail.com http://www.dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com/Music by: mictechmusic@yahoo.comSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)

Slam the Gavel welcomes Dr. Sam Sugar to the show. He is a medical doctor and a founder and president of Americans Against Abusive Probate Guardianship. This is an organization designed to help expose the corruption of this nation's guardianship systems.      Dr. Sugar received his M.D. from the Abraham Lincoln College of Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He also achieved certification as a specialist in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine and was distinguished as a fellow of the American College of Physicians.      He has served as the director for managed care at Evanston/Northwestern Healthcare. Dr. Sugar has also taught at both Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and the Chicago Medical School.     In 2014, after experiencing the horrors of guardianship firsthand, Dr. Sugar teamed up to create the Americans Against Abusive Probate Guardianship.      Currently, Dr. Sugar lives in Hollywood, Florida with his wife Judy.     Dr. Sugar was explaining that the public is naive to the fact that Guardianships are hidden from public view and that the public needs to understand how serious this actually is. Between 90% of all American families consider themselves dysfunctional, so dysfunctional parents produce dysfunctional children and this is known as intergeneration dysfunction and disgruntled siblings find themselves financial targets when they don't know what to do with an elderly parent's financial and medical issues.    This is a very complex dynamic not recognized by the court system. Perhaps they are unaware of it or intentionally ignoring the issues related to Guardianships. We discussed "Epigenetics." The stresses on families and individuals who have taken care of an elderly parent and find themselves and their loved one destroyed by these Guardianships.    Profit is what drives the abuse across the country known as professional Guardianships. Guardianships cannot be fixed, but possibly re-imagined. As a society, we need to take a serious look at how we handle infirmities in the elderly, disabled and handicapped and how we can do better as a country intaking care of  people that need help.To Reach Dr. Sugar: www.aaapg.netSupport the show(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)http://beentheregotout.com/https://monicaszymonik.mykajabi.com/Masterclass  USE CODE SLAM THE GAVEL PODCAST FOR 10% OFF THE COURSEFor 2022 PA Retreat: For more information, contact co-organizers:Maryann Petri at maryannpetri3@gmail.com Ann O'Keeffe Rodgers at okeefferodgers@gmail.com  http://www.dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com/Music by: mictechmusic@yahoo.comSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)

Slam the Gavel welcomes Amy Gedeon to the show to discuss her difficulties with CPS interference and a guardianship involving her now 19 year-old daughter.      Amy came to NC from Florida escaping Hurricane Irma on September 10th, 2017. While in NC, Amy bought a home in the country awaiting her house to be rebuilt in Florida.    While living in the house, Amy noticed a problem with mice as a neighbor also complained of  the mice. After losing her job and going through a divorce, Amy began working 7days a week while raising 2 daughters, one with special needs.     However, on August 20th, 2019, CPS came to Amy's doorstep, questioning the issue with the mice. They told Amy that her girls could not stay in the house while Animal Control shows up and takes away the family pets but would return them after a vet check. The pets were never returned.     The next day, CPS called Amy to tell her she would never see her children again and went ahead and enrolled the girls in a school one hour in the opposite direction. CPS also paid their psychologist $1,000.00 to say Amy had a BiPolar mental health issue and was too sick to care for her kids.     Amy did get her own psychological evaluation stating that she did not have a BiPolar mental health condition and she was not sick and could take care of her own children. As she went to court she was ordered to have a psychological evaluation which also stated that there were NO concerns about Amy's mental health. Seeing a therapist for the last 32 months, Amy's therapist stated she was not mentally ill and should have her kids back.   Amy's concern is to get her children back and to get her 19 year-old daughter out of a guardianship where they have moved her 7 times to unlicensed homes/institutions. In the institution, they had began medicating her on December 4th, 2020 with Haldol and Luvox as well as stopping her menstrual cycle with the Depo shot. Her daughter has now been sedated 24/7 for the last 15 months. She also is showing signs of mouth tics, crippling of the hands/fingers, a skin pallor of yellow/green and weighing 120lbs. at 5'7" and now completely non-verbal.      The current appeal in Raleigh shows Amy was fit and cooperative but also has been denied her seeing her youngest daughter for the past 32 months with no visitation  with is against the law in NC.
