The UK Supreme Court rules that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. BBC correspondent Catriona Renton joins Nuala to discuss the ramifications of the ruling. Parents of disabled children are being forced to spend thousands of pounds of their own money to plug funding gaps in the health and social care system, according to new research by the disability charity Sense. Nearly half of mums polled have had to give up work as they don't get enough support to care for their child, and many families are turning to loans, credit cards and even crowdfunding to plug the gaps. Nuala is joined by Harriet Edwards, Head of Policy at Sense, and mum-of-three Kimberley Hind. The Irish writer Edna O'Brien died last year at the age of 93. The last person to be granted an interview with her was the documentary director Sinéad O'Shea. Her new film Blue Road weaves those final interviews with archive and readings from Edna's own diaries to tell the story of her extraordinary life. How does parental infidelity impact children, even years later when they become adults? Juliet Rosenfeld, a psychoanalyst and author of Affairs, and Tanith Carey, parenting expert and author of What's My Tween Thinking, join Nuala to discuss.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Dianne McGregor

We have to make renovations to our homes and vehicles with little to no financial assistance. And that's often on top of career and work changes that have made our finances tighter to begin with. In this episode, I'm bringing back Alyssa Nutile and Amanda Griffith-Atkins to sort through the thoughts, feelings, and anxieties from this community about the financial aspect of this life. Parents of disabled children say they are being “pushed out” by a Kent zoo after new restrictions were placed on carer passes. Rule changes at Wingham Wildlife Park have left some families concerned they won't be able to afford to take their kids. Also in today's podcast, the government's Rwanda scheme is back in the national spotlight today - there'll be a debate over amendments in the commons ahead of a vote tomorrow. A Kent charity is calling for the scheme to be scrapped completely following the death of five asylum seekers in the Channel over the weekend. The Church is facing a huge backlash over plans to build 23 homes between an A-road and ancient woodland near Tenterden. Those backing the proposals say it  will “make a positive contribution” to the community but critics says it's going to make the A28 a "nightmare". You can find out which Kent councils have the highest level of debt.News figures also show where money is being spent across the county. And a supermarket cafe in Kent has been told to clean up its act after inspectors found evidence of mice in the kitchen. The eatery was also told it needed to tackle poor food hygiene after they were found to be keeping food past its use-by date.

His youngest daughter Tina, one of the producers, and the director and choreographer of the show, Kathleen Marshall join Emma Barnett. We discuss the possible decision to cancel another part of the high speed rail link - HS2 - and the impact it could have on women with Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson, co-director of the Women's Budget Group, a Feminist Economic Think Tank and Zoe Billingham, Director of the IPPR North - based in Manchester. Between 1975 and 1980, Peter Sutcliffe murdered 13 women and attempted to murder at least seven more across the North of England.  A new ITV drama series, The Long Shadow, portrays the women who were killed, and their families, as well as the hardworking but flawed and misogynist police investigation.  Joining Emma are Willow Grylls, executive producer of the show and Meg Winterburn, who worked on the investigation as a police sergeant. Exclusive research shared with Woman's Hour claims that £60m is ‘wasted' in England every year on Tribunals for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Local authorities ‘fight' thousands of parents of disabled children about what support the child gets and where they go to school  – but 'lose' 96% of those cases. This comes on the day that one of the country's leading experts delivers a valedictory lecture after a 40 year career advocating for disabled children. The longest legislative walkout by Oregon Senate Republicans in state history had meant the death of any number of bills. Now that legislative leaders have reached a framework for a possible deal to bring lawmakers back to the capitol, some may have new life. But the fate of one caregiving proposal was unclear even before the partisan boycott: a bill to allow parent caregivers of severely disabled children to continue to be paid for their work. Advocates say the program, which began in the pandemic, has resulted in dramatically lower health care costs and a reduction in the number of hospitalizations. According to these parents, “Of families that participated in the parent caregiver program, 80% reported reduced hospitalizations, 73% reported reductions in calls to 911 or crisis intervention, and 82% reported extreme concern about the risks to their children's health since the program ended in May.” Parents rallied last week at the capital in an effort to call attention to what they say is truly an emergency, and in lieu of the bill, get support for a budgetary note to continue this funding. We're joined by Calli Ross, who cares for her 8-year-old son who manages severe disabilities.

When you have a child with a disability or other medical complexity, the holidays can feel like a minefield, as trauma triggers, anxiety, and grief for what we wish the holidays could have been for our families lurk around every corner. And on top of that, having to manage schedules, special diets, gift expectations, and uncomfortable commentary from friends and family can be emotionally and physically draining. The season often leaves parents of disabled children feeling left out, over-worked –and occasionally– like the celebrations might just be more trouble than they're worth. In today's episode, Amanda Griffith-Atkins and I discuss listener feedback and contributions about how complicated the holiday season feels for parents of disabled children, suggestions for how to make the holiday season feel just a little bit more manageable, and how adjusting our expectations has made a big difference for each of our families. Having a child with a disability or rare disease can be a lonely experience, often in ways that parents never anticipated. Their lives have changed dramatically and the relationships they used to rely on might feel suddenly distant. Family and friends may want to reach out, but they don't always know how to offer the support that is most helpful for parents. Their “encouraging” comments sometimes miss the mark and can cause even more heartache for the parents they are trying to help. Or, they might be so at a loss for how to offer support that they just stay away altogether. It's easy to find lists of things not to say and not to do for parents caring for children with rare diseases, but what about the ways that family and friends CAN offer support? In this solo episode, Madeline shares suggestions from listeners about the kind of support they want from those close to them as they care for their children with disabilities. Parents of children with medical complexities need —and want— their people to stay in their lives, and these tips can help strengthen these relationships. Links: Check out Annette Moreau's courses.
