As summer jazz festival season kicks off in Paris, we're joined by two rising stars of the London and Paris jazz scenes who both use their music to explore their roots. Saxophonist Camilla George was born in Eket, Nigeria, but moved to London at a young age, where she says the city's diverse jazz scene gave her the confidence to write music about her hometown, fusing jazz with Afrofuturism and hip-hop. Trumpeter Hermon Mehari was born in Missouri to parents who'd fled Eritrea, and he now lives in Paris. He had a more classic jazz training, but began exploring his family history during the Covid lockdown, which led him to incorporate traditional Eritrean rhythms and melodies into his music.
The first part of the show will be all about Make Music Day, which happens worldwide annually on June 21. This year over 40 acts will play in over 25 venues/parks in KC. We hear music from some of those acts playing on Make Music Day including Molly Hair, Musicbyskippy, Keelon Vann, SliKc, and Damon Parker of The MGDs. The second half of the show will feature more new releases, this time from Danny McGaw, Ethan and Charlie G, St Violet, Hermon Mehari, Rewound x Calvin Arsenia, and Collier Cash - you may know him as the Foo Fighters kid, as he was on stage with Dave Grohl and was gifted his guitar.
Six decades separate Latvian guitarist Ella Zirina, who's 25, from Charles Lloyd who just turned 85. The playlist features Emile Parisien, Vincent Peirani, Vincent Segal, Baba Sissoko; Ella Zirina; Tineke Postma; Costanza Alegiani; Enzo Carniel, Hermon Mehari, Damien Varaillon, Stéphane Adsuar; Mario Costa; Rachel Therrien; Julian Lage; Charles Lloyd, Julian Lage, Zakir Hussain. Programmation musicale: Donna Lee, Charlie Parker (version de l'album Arc Fiction) Volver, Hermon Mehari & Alessandro Lanzoni Dance Cathartic, Hermon Mehari

France-based American jazz trumpeter Hermon Mehari has released a powerful second record called "A Change for the Dreamlike". Recorded in the French countryside during the first lockdown, it's more personal than his 2017 debut record "Bleu". He describes it as a "modern mixtape of dreams". Mehari drew inspiration from his childhood in the American Midwest as well as his family history. He tells FRANCE 24's Florence Villeminot about the track "A Conversation with My Uncle", where he plays along to a story his uncle tells about his father escaping Eritrea.
The fusion of different musical cultures and genres is at the heart of this edition of Mondo Jazz, where the works of Frank Zappa are given the solo piano treatment by Dave Hartl, Mats Öberg and Stefano Bollani, where a Kansas City expat in Paris, trumpeter Hermon Mehari, explores both his Eritrean roots and his urban inclinations, where the global music of Ajoyo finds its matches in the Mathis Sound Orchestra, and where the cutting edge Ezra Collective looks back into the Blue Note vaults while the Brand New Heavies make a comeback and Kesha takes Marc Bolan into the future with a little help from Hal Willner. Happy listening! The playlist also features The Greyboy Allstars, Michelangelo Scandroglio, Dario Congedo, The Brecker Brothers and Frank Zappa. They won a contest that included a recording contract with Origin Records, and the result is Diverse (Origin, 2009), a well-crafted selection of original music. In this interview, trumpeter Hermon Mehari talks about how the band got started; why they ended up playing some tunes in the contest that were written the same day as the performance; and what comes next now that they've made a record and opened for Roy Haynes.
